Chicken piccata
Karen S.

Memorable evening. This hidden gem is welcoming and cozy. The staff is very attentive and friendly and helped us with our choices. It was hard to decide with so many great things in the menu but we decided on squash ravioli , chicken piccata , shrimp rolls and mango mousse. The flavors were amazing.

Cioppino

Wonderful little place on a side street in PG! My wife loved the colors and paintings. Our waitress was super cheerful and informative, then we realized she and her husband own the place. Best Cioppino I've ever had, sauce was absolutely amazing, richly flavored, great mouth feel. Shellfish and fish cooked perfect, not overdone at all, though it was obvious the sauce had simmered well. My wife loved her Salmon, she raved about the sauce - might be a perfect beurre blanc, wish I knew more! We dropped by Sunday evening and were seated immediately - the place is so good - make a reservation!

Rib Eye Steak

From the outside looking in, this little restaurant doesn't look like much. But let me tell you, don't judge a book by its cover...just like Mama said. It is very quaint, maybe a bit dated inside, but the tables are spacious and the servers are wonderful. I believe our server may have been the chef's wife, she was a lovely Japanese woman who made us feel so at home. She didn't bat an eye when we walked in with our 3 year old, rather, she had a booster seat ready for her. (We had made our reservation online and they called to follow up to ask if we needed a booster or high chair. How awesome is that?!) We didn't order any apps but did indulge in the fantastic bread provided to us. It was perfectly crusty on the outside and soft and warm on the inside. I ordered the rack of lamb...medium rare perfection. The sauce is a wonderful brown sauce which goes so well with the mustard crust of the lamb. Hubby got the rib-eye. Perfectly cooked to medium rare. Uncle Keith got the cioppino...he drank every last bit of the sauce, it was that good. Aunt Mere got the chicken piccata. Flavorful without being overbearing and they were great about making sure to accommodate her food allergy of garlic. Dessert, yes. The chocolate mousse cake...so rich but balanced out with the perfect amount of tart raspberries. And the crème brûlée...the perfect crunch of the top and a warm vanilla bean taste on the inside. We're new to the area and look forward to coming back to Max's grill again and again!

Short Ribs with potato au gratin!
Hope B.

We frequent PG (5-6 times a year) just to get away from the Bay Area eat race. We have amour favorite restaurants and this place just made our top list. It has a quaint family atmosphere and the staff (the lander and a server) were super friendly. Our server Christian was knowledgeable about the menu and answered our questions in detail. For the appetizer, we ordered tempura sand dab and it set the bar very high. It was battered and seasoned perfectly and the fish was flaky and light. I ordered the short ribs and I will have to say that it's one of the BEST meals I've had in the area. The meat literally melts in your mouth and did not have a lot of fat. The vegetables and potato au gratin were cooked perfectly but the sauce was the highlight. It was creamy, had layers of flavors and piping hot. My wife ordered the fresh made ravioli stuffed with porcini and shiitake mushrooms and bri cheese topped with herb butter sauce. She absolutely loved it! If you're in the area and are looking for a great place to eat with the atmosphere to match, then try this place. You won't be disappointed. We will definitely be back!

Was praying they'd have creme brulee for dessert!

The calamari is also good, featuring a light, crispy breading but was not greasy. Instead of a mix of body and tentacles, they serve large, tender chunks of squid cut into clean squares, making it so approachable that even picky eaters with a limited palate won't be turned off by it. That alone was helpful, though they were able to seat us within 15 min or so. Atmosphere Aside from getting seated, the interior was pretty kid friendly as well. They had coloring sheets and there was a good amount of space between tables. The kids were high chair age so no one was running, though overall good ambiance. Food: Really depends on the item & Sand Dab Sandwich (2/5) - of course the sand dab fish is small so there were going to be multiple filleted pieces in each sandwich, though overall there wasn't a lot of meat. The bread was soft which is good because it was mostly a bit of bread, onions, and all the other ingredients. (Pictured) & Fresh fish: sand dabs (3/5) - this was the far better dish, the sand dab fillet was larger than the sandwich version. The pasta was good and the veggies were cooked. & Chowder (5/5)

The combination of flakiness and suppleness of the beast makes each bite memorable. So I was all prepared to order trout last night while we were out, when I had to hear the specials, I had had trout for breakfast a few days prior and wasn't sold on having it again so soon. Luckily, they had Arctic Char on the menu, which tastes like a souped-up version of salmon. So I decided to have that instead. Not only was the taste hauntingly good, but it was just as flaky and supple. The spinach was a good complement and was the side salad. I don't often stray from trout but I'm glad I did this time. Also amazingly good was that homemade maple-banana bread pudding with banana ice cream. I almost went my whole life without ever having this and it would've been a sad missed opportunity if I had. The server was excellent. She gave good advice on the food when asked, knew the menu backwatds and forwards, and was just professional with us the whole night. She was a godsend. The ambiance was perfect for this type of place--dim, private, and very active. In fact, the house level was a tad high for my tastes. But that only means you have a popular and active restaurant. Overall, it wasn't too bad and certainly nothing that would deter me from coming here again. As it stands, I don't know when I'll be back but I know that's a promise and not wishful thinking. Meals from this place are why eating well always is a life goal.

We finally decided to give it a try after our visit to Monterey Bay Aquarium. [[ Pro's ]] 1.) Decent sized dedicated parking lot which is nice. 2.) Lots of indoor seating as well as a large area for outdoor seating covered with umbrellas. 3.) Two large bathrooms that were fairly clean. 4.) Food is generally good. I think they excel in the quality of their seafood and I wished I tried more grilled options rather than getting fried options. Their Clam Chowder was also very delicous. We ordered: a.) Monterey Bay Fish Tacos b.) Fish & Chips c.) Clam Chowder - Quartz Portion sizes could be bigger for the Fish Tacos and Fish & Chips (i.e. more fries for example). [[ Con's ]] 1.) There is a 2.75% surcharge if you use your credit card. They do note that their original prices have already been decreased by 2.75% in order to incentivize cash payments but I didn't find the prices to be much cheaper. I assume most people use credit cards so it was just a bit annoying they do it this way. It's shown on the bottom of the menu 2.) Wait time was a bit slow. From ordering and to getting the order, I think it was about 15 minutes on a relatively slow day. When it did come out, 3 tables got food at exactly the same time so maybe they cook in batches? I wonder how long it'll take on a busy day.

The fish and chips were the obvious standout (delicious!) but we enjoyed everything we tried. One thing I will note: while many things were labeled gluten free, it was unclear if the entire restaurant was gluten free or not. I think if they could write some kind of blurb at the bottom, or mark items which contain gluten, since the majority of items are gluten free, that would be so helpful! Upon entry, we were heartily greeted by the owner and staff. There were only a couple tables left on the main floor as there was a large party of fifteen people seated in most of the main dining area. It was extremely loud with voices reverberating because of the gregarious group. The owner invited us upstairs to see if a high-bar table would be suitable. The table was quite small even though it overlooked the entire first level, so we declined as another table by the front windows had become available. The Charcuterie + Cheese board was a wonderful start to the evening. It consisted of prosciutto di parma, sopressata, duck prosciutto, bella vitano, triple cream brie, chèvre, almonds, and fig jam served with sliced grilled sourdough. Delish. We enjoyed their Sauteed Rock Cod entrée which consisted of pan-fried cod served with potato puree, artichokes + capers in a Meyer lemon brown butter sauce. The portion was of moderate size, and the dish was excellently prepared and plated. In addition, we had the Drunken Skillet Seared Octopus, which was a nice portion of octopus in a preserved black-bean honey sauce, along with Chef Jerry's seasoning. I recommend this starter as an appetizer or as a main entrée for a light appetite. All was quite delicious. This is an intimate venue for wonderfully prepared meal. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a little lacking which could account for the bad acoustic issue. The service is outstanding as the staff was attentive and watchful without interrupting the customer's dining experience. We were greeted by friendly wait staff and given a rundown of the menu highlights. Ended up ordering all of the recommendations, which included the duck liver pâté, the drunken skillet seared octopus, and the seared duck breast with a side of crispy brussels sprouts. The pâté was an interesting but delicious dish, creamy, savory, rich, and perfect on the Ad Astra sourdough (I wish there had been one more piece of bread though). The octopus was tender and beautifully seared, with a black bean sauce that I couldn't get enough of. We felt obligated to try the duck breast and were not disappointed. It was very tender, with some bits of crispy skin and nicely rendered fat (some of the best duck I've had). It went nicely with the polenta, which soaked up the jus. I was a big fan of the tomato jam, which added some acidity and a light sweetness to the dish. The Brussels sprouts were crispy and I liked the carmelized onions with them, but they deep fry the sprouts and I found that they had an oily taste and texture that wasn't my favorite. To drink, I had a low alcohol drink called the PG spot, which has saké. It was refreshing and the light bitterness went nicely with this meal. We were very full by the end of the meal. Good experience overall. We'll definitely be back. I felt that the ambience could be elevated for the cost of the food. White walls and a couple of art prints. Personally, I think it would be lovely with dark green walls and gold/brown accents, with a lot more duck-themed décor.
