Second time is a charm. On a recent Saturday, hubs wanted to go to Auburn and suggested we try Maxi's again. I say again since the last time we stopped by it was closed for the whole afternoon and evening for a private event. I reluctantly agreed. But I'm glad we went. Overall great dining experience. We came in for a late Saturday lunch a few weeks back. The place is located right off I 80 in the same parking lot as Holiday inn. By the looks of the outside, I wasn't thinking the interior would be impressive. I was wrong, the decor and furniture was new and modern. Very upscale looking. They also have a nice bar with several easy to view TVs tuned to the sports channels. We ordered a hot pastrami with a chosen side of potato salad to share. The pastrami was lean, the kraut and pastrami was tasty. The bread was toasted and a bit greasy though, like it was grilled in grease. We also ordered a wedge salad. Ingredients were fresh. Hubs had a iced tea $2.50 with unlimited refills. They brought him a small pot of hot water with a tea bag, lemon wedge, and a glass of ice. I had an Arnold Palmer, they make fresh squeezed lemonade so no HFCS. It's $3 and unlimited. Delicious! The waitress was awesome. After she brought out our drinks; she brought out the complimentary bread. One raisin bread roll and a white bread roll, both came out warm with pats of butter on the side. She also brought out extra plates and offered drink refills just at the right times. She brought out the mustard caddy. She was spot on. read more

I am new to the area, moved from Bay Area.I was SO excited that there was a Max's close by as is of my favorites. I would have never known this was Max's as menu same the food was not well prepared to Max's high standards. Usually get the half pastrami and matzo ball soup. The soup was delicious but half the size I am used to. The pastrami sandwich was small and very dry and not delicious. My friend had the Grandma's Chicken which was a chicken cutlet vs a half chicken on bone in bay area. I was swimming in WAY to much sauce...Unappetizing presentation! Moved on to dessert..my favorite Macaroons and Niagara Falls cake unavailable :-( Overall poor experience...though services was great. read more

Let me start by saying the service we experienced was absolute perfection! Trevor was our server and he was knowledgable, right on top of it but not in our face. And that is saying a lot because I was a server for 16 years, so I am very picky about service. The food was very tasty and generous portions. We ordered the calamari appetizer and it was delish! Very big juicy calamari, rings and tenticles, served with a few fried jalepenos and a smoky sweet kind of dipping sauce. The Trout I had was very good too! My husbands Corned Beef Rueben was excellent and the rye it was served on was amazing! The place was clean, the menu was great offering something for everyone! Think a scaled down, simplier version of Cheescake Factory's menu. If I continue to go back and have similar experiences I will have to bump it up one more star for consistency. Went to Max's here in auburn today thought I'd have a couple drinks before dinner ordered a Moscow mule after getting off work. Need a refreshing drink after working on roof in 103°the drink was week tried to order a second the bartender said I can't give you one unless you order food. I looked at the menu and said I think I'll wait till dinner but thank you anyway she said I can't serve you another drink unless you order food is there a problem she said no that's just our policy. The manager came over that she was uncomfortable serving me another drink didn't know if I had before I got there which I didn't. I came straight from work and backed up to the bartender. I've never been cut off after one drink before in my life. I said just check me out the bartender. Tried to say have a nice day. No thanks to you. I will never eat there again. Not my kids or my kids kids. Too short to be put up with humiliation like that undeserved. so if you'd like to relax and have a cocktail at maxes and Auburn, I would highly recommend you choose another venue. read more

Just returned home from Mother's Day Dinner. We were very disappointed with our experience at Max's. We had reservations for 6pm & showed up 15 minutes early. Our greeter and eventually our server was Marci, she first tried to seat us in the bar, not our choice. We were told it might take awhile for us to be served, they weren't packed. Marci then showed up to take our drink order which we ordered 1 glass of wine. On her return she tossed the bread bucket on our table. We placed our order with her with no conversation about other items on the menu.(We over heard another waitress giving Detailed information to other guests). Just had our first foray out to eat since covid began and had a lovely dinner at Max's. The smoke had finally cleared and were able to enjoy our meal outdoors on the patio. Marcie, our server, was very attentive and the food was delicious. My husband had the Riley steak which had a very flavorful rub on it and was perfectly cooked and I had the hot corned beef sandwich, nice and lean and piled high on toasted rye. This place really surprised me because it is located inside a Holiday Inn which no offense to Holiday Inn but it is not usually known for great food. Anyway I digress, we eat here every time we go to Roseville for my son's basketball tournament. As others have already stated, they have a really great kids menu that has a ton of choices and are reasonably priced. I like it because if you are traveling with kids they have an area that has televisions if you want to be casual which can be entertaining when driving three 13 year old boys. The kids love the food and it is fresh, fast, and the desserts are to die for. If you want to ditch the kids or the televisions the restaurant part is very upscale and a nice place to have a quiet dinner. When I am in a casual mood I go with the fish and chips which are hand-breaded, but if you want to go lite....all of their salads are fresh and HUGE! The french onion soup is not my favorite, but it is still very good. Staff is very friendly and professional, definitely give this place a try! read more

Also, the two lady bartenders we had tonight were terrible. I saw their backs more than their fronts and we were sitting at the bar.. something wrong with that. Also, every time we come in here I pray it has changed but has not.... your air conditioning- no matter the time of day or the temp outside it beats down with 4 vents directing freezing air flow right on your bar customers!!! I went in to Max's for my sister's 18th birthday last Thursday on the 4th because the last time we went it was so good and the service was excellent buttttt this time we went it was obviously horrible the server was a different one then last time and she was being so rude towards us never had a conversation had a little smart attitude neverrrrrr came to check on us at all i was so thirsty i drank my sisters drink she was sitting at the pastry bar ON HER PHONE the whole time she checked on the single lady next to us drinking wine but not on us with food!!!! Such a terrible experience i had a $20 tip in my pocket for the lady we had last time but there was no way i was giving it to this waitress Just because we are "Teenagers" doesn't mean you could treat us like that its discrimination. I should have suspected That this restaurant had gone down hill when we walked in on Valentine's Day to see only one other couple in the restaurant. The waitress gave us menus and instantly asked if we were ready to order we said give us a minute and she gave us a half hour before she showed up again. we ordered a half a sandwich and a cuppa soup and that took another half hour and never once did she check back with us finally she gave us our check after We went up to the bar and requested it and then we had to track someone down to take our moneyvery poor service only average food and a $30 bill for two half sandwiches and 2 cups of soup Forgot and returned another big mistake. I was hoping this place was related to Maxs that closed in the bay area . But this was horrid. The pastrami on rye was 3 slices of a boarshead type of pastrami that didnt cover the entire piece of rye. Fries were good.....I ate all of them andleft 3/4 of the sandwich. The turkey my wife had on rye..the taste was unrecognizeable. She loved the fries as well. If you just want an order of fries I suggest this place. Otherwise its cheap ingredients, and not close to deli quality food. It was over 30 dollars for 2 sandwiches and fries.....no drinks. Not the Max's of long ago in SF, but definitely still good! I had the turkey Reuben minus sauerkraut with fries, surprise!, liked the shoestring onion garnish best with my sandwich. Plenty large enough for smaller appetites to share! We had a great experience with Max's. My husband and I hosted our son's wedding rehearsal dinner at the Auburn location and the food, staff & setup were amazing. We were a large party so they set us up in a banquet room inside the hotel. For no extra fee they decorated the tables beautifully, & had a bar set up with decor as well. Everyone was real friendly and accommodating. Super sweet bartender in our room pouring drinks. She was friendly and always had a smile on her face. I highly recommend them! read more

Pretty dissatisfied! This was our first dinner here in Auburn after moving from the Bay Area. We ordered from door dash, which isn't this restaurants fault but he wasn't wearing a mask which was sad to see, especially the amount of people a food delivery guy sees on a daily basis. NO fries. Probably about 10 fries total. We didn't see the option to add cheese on doordash. I feel it goes without saying that cheese should be included, so a bit weird to have it as an extra hidden from doordash. Something definitely tasted missing without the cheese. Not very flavorful at all, no sauce or anything special. I honestly feel I could have gotten a better burger at McDonalds, which would have saved me the $$. I had the pastrami rueben, others at the table had the chicken Marsala & mac & cheese. All of them came out quickly and were presented very well. They were very tasty and filling as my group made it family-style and we all shared. Dave was our server and he was very friendly and quick to assist us with our various requests. He easily went from good to great as the meal progressed. The hiccup came when we ordered dessert for 4 people, all of us getting a scoop of vanilla with our orders. Five minutes later, we were told that employees were enroute to the local store because they had ran out of vanilla ice cream. I was amazed that any restaurant who's majority of desserts feature vanilla ice cream, would actually run out! The saving grace was that Dave spoke with his manager and comped us the desserts. Let me start by saying everyone I know loves this place. My mother, father, aunts, uncles, friends, grandmother, they have all been multiple time each. My uncle used to host Vietnam veteran dinners here. They are friendly, fun, and even if they have new serves make up for the slack by working their buns off. This is my date night spot, mother daughter day spot, my break up spot. It has a special place in my heart. And the food has a special place in my belly. We had a large party last night on New Year's Eve. The service was lousy. The food was terrible. Several people sent their plate back because it tasted terrible. They got them something else and it also was terrible. They tried to charge us for two plates that they didn't eat the bill came to over $100 and they charged a $25 Tip even though they didn't eat two of the plates. The service was so bad that the lady will not comp the two plates we did not eat the manager was nasty someone didn't like the wine and the ladies said does someone want this I just have to throw it away so someone said OK I'll drink it and they charge us for the wine when she said she's gonna have to throw it away the pill the bill was over $145 and two plates weren't even eaten, the food tasted old and the salmon was awful and the steak was chewy and stringy. I will never go back to that restaurant. It was just unbelievable that they treated a large party with no respect but their money very disappointed in the restaurant. read more

We're huge fans of the Max's chain, especially being from the Bay and I used to work at one. Haven't been to this location in a while and was craving a Rueben. So we stopped for a late lunch. Hubby and I shared the CB Rueben, onion rings, and a bowl of Matzah Ball soup. The Ruben was still a decent portion but less than it used to be. The onion rings were crispy on the outside but had an uncooked, mushy flour grit to it. The soup was hearty with celery, carrots, and an angel hair type pasta but the broth was very bland, not how I remember it at all. We shared the huge Chocolate and Vanilla eclair. Sadly it was disappointing too. The pate a choux was hard and almost stale. Like it had been in the fridge for several days, definitely not fresh. This has become our go to restaurant and bar when visiting the auburn area. We discovered it while staying in the holiday inn and were so pleased with the great service, cocktails and food that we've kept going back. the "ultimate margarita" was delicious and tasted as if the limes had just been squeezed- so refreshing! The salmon and kale and grandmas chicken are two of our favorite dishes but everything we've had has been delicious! Our server Lynn was wonderful and always takes great care of us! If we are not stopping in Auburn for In-n-Out it's Max's, We stop here a few time a year on trips to various locations in California. Max's seems like small town hotel restaurant dining when you walk in but them you realize it is an upscale deli and restaurant with something for everyone including a fairly nice bar. It is always packed at night and during the lunch rush. I love the Rubin and other deli items with the amazing potato salad and pickle. I have also had the hamburger and chicken pot pie multiple times. I enjoy the way the restaurant is decorated and have always liked the staff. The deli style hot tea poured over ice at the table makes a great glass of iced tea. I will continue to come year after year. We have a few great deli's in Reno, but they are in casinos fighting with the smoke and parking. Max's offers deli options for me and everything else depending on your mood. The desert items grab your attention from the dysplay window as you walk into this curiously good restaurant attached to a Holliday Inn just off I-80. We tried the clam chowder bowl and the braised brisket. The chowder bowl was just okay. My wife said it was more of a potato soup than a clam chowder. The braised brisket was brown and very dry. I exchanged the brisket for a hamburger and it was okay. It had some horrible cheese that I was able to scrape off. But it was juicy and tasted like beef. Price wise they are a bit high for the quality but on the flip side the portions were good sized. We were also the youngest people in the restaurant by a large margin. read more
