Can't even comment on the food because we didn't even stay to eat. 20 min to get water. 10 more to get a drink and 30 min later still no food. An hour for a soup and salad for him and a salad for Me? We've been a fan of Max's since dining at the Max's at the Galleria in Roseville. Sadly they closed and we discovered the Max's in Auburn years ago, so this review is long overdue. We've been here several times now and we've always had great service and food. I know there are a lot of great places to dine in Auburn but we love that it's not as crowded as those other places and we never have to wait for a table. The interior is beautifully decorated with a modern feel. The tables are set with white tablecloth, glass and silverware. Servers and hosts are always pleasant and hospitable. On our last visit, we ordered the Pastrami Reuben, loaded with lots of pastrami, Swiss cheese and kraut, it was very filling after our hike. The Greek salad was delicious too, with lots of different lettuce, fennel, farro, and olives. It was interestingly yum and oh so fresh. Oh, and try their Bloody Mary, it's refreshing after a long hike! If you're ever up this way, give Max's a try, they're right behind that popular burger joint. I think you'll be pleased! read more

My family and I have been visiting Max's for years... but stopped visiting a few years ago due to terrible service from both the servers and the management. One of my family members passed away and family from out of town booked a few rooms at the Holiday Inn attached to Max's. We decided to give Max's another try because many of our family members are elderly and had no transportation. Having a hotel restaurant is extremely convenient. We are SO ELATED we came back in! We were sat in the lounge area and we had never sat there in the past. Nicole the bartender is literally one of the most professional and kind people we have come across is years in the restaurant industry!!!! First off, her wine knowledge is quite impressive. My brother works at a winery and is a wine SNOB. Not only did she impress him with her pairing knowledge... but she blew him away with understanding the variety of wine on the Max's wine list. Secondly, Nicole is highly educated in the Max's menu. She knows every single dish from appetizers to entrees and can describe each one with confidence. She is clearly proud of the food Max's produces and she should be. Every single one of the 10 of us was excited and happy with the choices she guided us towards. We watched Nicole go from table to table, customer to customer with grace and and elevated infectious energy. I can't believe how many customers she knew on a first name basis and how many customers she was able to serve effortlessly!!!! Nicole is the BEST bartender in Auburn and because of her absolute care to attention, we will be back to see her. The food was pretty good but for a 45 dollar rib eye, I would have hoped they could spring for better cutlery. My knife handle rattled like there was a prize inside and I've had more sturdy forks at Placer County's main jail. Hard to cut steak when the fork bends in half like an old magic trick. read more

This hidden gem is great! The complimentary bread rolls are to die for! Crispy around the edges and so soft in the middle. I ordered the burger and was pleasantly surprised about the size. It was pretty big. The fries that came with the burger were pretty cold though but I was too hungry to ask for a replacement. I also wish they had a few more cheese flavors like american and pepper jack but they only have cheddar or Swiss. My man ordered the philly cheesesteak and although the flavor was good, the meat itself was pretty tough. We also ordered the lemon berry mascarpone cake and it was DELICIOUS. The perfect springtime cake! Our waiter was so sweet and gentle as well but not very attentive to make sure everything's okay or if we needed anything else. I really hate writing a bad review of a once great restaurant, but I have no choice. Went there a couple of few times and this is not the Max's that once stood out from the rest. To me, it was more of an Applebee's. Matzo ball soup was overly salty. It literally was a salt lick. I had a cup and only could eat half of it because it was like drinking chicken broth made with ocean water. I am not sure who their cook is but I am pretty sure he or she owns stock in a salt company. The hamburger lacked flavor except again SALTY. Try herbs/spices that is what gives flavor, salt just gives salt. Steak fries were excellent- nice size and hot. The first time I had them it was perfectly light on salt so you could taste the potato. Second visit, again, half were overly salted and the other half had none. I would rather have none than the amount of the heavily handed salted cook. The chicken potpie was excellent. It had great flavor, lots of chicken, and the crust was perfect...kudos to them. Kale salad was very good with a nice amount of walnuts and feta. The dressing had a nice mellow lemon vinaigrette to it. well done Max. Pastrami sandwich nicely toasted and a good portion. Carrot cake for $8 was a huge disappointment. Max's used to make this huge carrot cake and it was full of flavor. When they came to the table with this small slice of what seemed to be a piece of cake from Safeway, I was like what happened?? I guess they changed but surely the price did not reflect it. Honestly, the size of the cake should not have been more than $3 that is how sad it looked. Good thing I ordered a side of ice cream so it was more like a dessert. Their huge coconut macaroon is no longer. It is something that is just pathetic looking. I never knew a macaroon could be anorexic but damn sure enough that is their version of their macaroon now. Their eclair is still big but frozen inside. If you never ate an eclair that has custard partially frozen, well, I will save you the heartache, don't. It is like watered down icy custard and dough. The tower chocolate cake is true to the name. It is a huge piece of fudge chocolate cake. However, $11 for a slice is the huge thing. $11 seriously?! Oddly, they no longer offer chopped liver sandwiches or tuna fish. They used to make a great tuna melt. I guess they moved from their deli days. Sadly, that was one of the reasons why we went there. Service was always great when we went there so that is a huge plus. If you remember Max's restaurant, they were known as "a bad place for a diet". Well now they are a good place for a diet because the flavor is not there and the portions are averagely ordinary. Back in the day, Max's was the deli restaurant to go to - now it is like Applebee's and just generic. I see why so many of the Max's restaurants have been closing. There are a lot of better restaurants in Auburn to choose from that really make an incredible tasting meal. I've been coming to Max's for years, and always found the food and service fantastic ... until today. Everything at this location seems to be about cutting corners are reducing cost and service. From the iced tea that used to come for you to brew it yourself at your table (just generic iced tea now) to the pastrami sandwich being something from any gas station. After, they all decided come to this Max's! By entrance is an area, I say about four different shelves of big cakes and big pies! I had take a chance, order what they call Calamari (not sure spelling) Frittos. Cost $10.73 with tax, left $13.00 for my portion! That should give him two dollar and twenty seven cents with the tip! This surprise surprise, yes had the legs and tentacles! Many places when they say word Calamari on their menues, I ask what it is they say is Squid! Yet when the order comes, to me all I seeing tough version Onion Rings, I not even like Onion Rings! This did have the legs and tentacles, lots red sauce! Max'd out my awful meter! If they can't make a burger or a salad, give up. Had a bad dining episode here. Met my Wife for a Thursday late dinner 8 PM. Not many choices in Auburn at that hour. Max's sounded like a step up from fast food. WRONG! Under staffed, slow, frazzled servers. She had the saddest burger we'd seen in a long time: small patty ,under cooked, soggy bottom bun, and cheese that was microwaved after the meat was on the bun. Even worse the tomato slice was overripe, thin, and a wilted single lettuce leaf with it. No condiments provided or offered , after 10 minutes I went to the bar and found some mustard. $4 upcharge for a skimpy sweet potato fries upgrade brought it to about $20 for this trash. Wife had a hard day at work and ate the patty and the fries. I had a Greek salad and had it topped with sliced skirt steak. Was asked how I wanted it , said medium rare. The only thing Greek about the salad was lumps of feta and the oil and red wine dressing. Kind of bagged chop saladish, and a little wilted. The steak was well done sliced and cold, so it was not cooked to order! It was edible but below a standard that most restaurants could achieve with a damn salad and a steak. Told and showed the waitress what was wrong and no fix offered besides free desert.. I suggested they comp the burger, but that didn't fly. We did not want a creamy desert that this place had had sitting around all day. It's attached to the Holiday Inn and Max's hosts their motel breakfast. My husband and I have been here many times for the rueben. Its the best we have ever had. That being said the service and timing for food coming out has been poor. Rarely do we get good service. The manager has been involved in a couple of our visits and didn't come to the table to talk to us. Very unprofessional. The thing that upsets me the most is they charge $3.50 for a glass of tap soda water. NEVER have I ever been charged for tap soda water anywhere else. It's completely ridiculous. Max's always has great quality food and it is always cooked as requested. If you order a hamburger/patty melt you don't get a cooked frozen burger from Costco like so many restaurants. Max's must grind their own meat as it Is always so juicy and without gristle; and a good half-pounder. All I can say is everything I've had, including their desserts has been quality food. On my return visit, I intentionally sat in the dining room, and not in the bar. That changed everything. I ordered a small salad, and a bowl of soup, and iced tea. The Waitress was on her first night, and told me in advance, but she was very pleasant and try very hard, and had a more seasoned waitress looking over her shoulder several times, reminding her what to ask etc -- and there was the pivotal question. When I was finished eating, no whoosing away of the plates until I'd been asked if I wanted dessert, she talked me into taking a slice of cheesecake home. The food and service here is amazing! We have been here a few times and were very impressed! The staff were so friendly and helpful. We have had the same server every visit and he was beyond amazing! The atmosphere is so cozy and warm and welcoming. I am so picky with food and I have absolutely loved everything I have eaten there. My goal is to have everything on the menu. On February 12th I had a great lunch at Max's and asked about the advertised Valentine's Day menu and reservations. I was told that the menu had not been determined yet (which I found odd since Valentine's Day was just 2 days away). When I followed up with a phone call on Valentine's Day morning, I was told that the menu hadn't been determined yet. I left my phone number for a return call, but never heard back. Sprouting off to the side of the Holiday Inn next to the freeway is this brick mansion-looking American comfort-food restaurant noted by a green backlit sign of "Max's" in black caligraphy. Inside is a retouched version of the previous comfort-food restaurant made to be a bit more open with a cabin/ski lodge-vibe. There isn't much on decoration, but it's a warmly-lit place of black chairs that match the cross-beams along the tall cream-colored roof. The light brown wooden tables match the seats and floor panelling that leads all the way to the far end - beyond the well-stocked-and-lit bar - where even more tables and booths await. I'm handed a tall menu where all sorts of American staples reside, but the 'Happy Hour' is what I'm more interested in. With happy hour we got an order of chicken tenders, a "mini" cheeseburger and fries, and a chicken quesadilla. Now I thought it'd be small sampler-sized plates for the price. However, I was proved wrong when three large plates came bearing a good-sized burger and full side of fries; a full quesadilla stuffed with chicken, cheese, and bell peppers; and a plate of fried chicken tenders covered in an orange-colored sweet chili sauce. The quesadilla didn't have much flavor aside from the tame white-meat chicken and cheese within. There's a good bit of bell peppers, onions, and some kind of sauce that unfortunately doesn't come through flavor-wise. The burger - cooked nice 'n' rare on request - had a good deal of lean beefy flavor between puffy and slightly crispy buns, sliced red onions, and lettuce. It's a good basic cheeseburger that, for the price, is a heckuva deal. And the steak-cut fries had a good amount of crisp contrast to the super puffy potato-y interior. The chicken tenders, which seemed more so nuggets on a bed of dried rice noodles, had a good amount of crunch and flavor thanks to the sauce which is your sweet sweet Asian chili sauce. While the size of the food is indeed generous for the price, it ranges from 'okay' to 'pretty good'. It's not bad, just not overly surprising when surrounded by other options in the town. When ordering I specifically aske dthe waiter if there are any peppers in the food and repeated my sister was allergic 2 times. He rolled his eyes at me and spun his head back n forth stating no peppers are on the chicken in the in the cobb salad. Well there is, paprika in the spices and that is a pepper. We went here for Mother's Day brunch and as usual Max's didn't disappoint! My daughter had their sliders and French fries which she loved! I had the prosciutto wrapped Jumbo Prawns and OMG so delicious!! I usually have their salmon so I was happy I tried something new both amazing!!
