This review is based on far too many visits to Max's, as it's one of my Gran's favorite places to dine.
+/-) The decor is nice and a vast improvement over Marie Calendars, but beware if you sit in the room with the fireplace - there's a ridiculously cold draft that comes straight down the hall from the front door that they can't seem to do anything about. I've spent entire meals sitting in front of the fireplace, too cold to take my down jacket off.
+/-) The rolls that they bring you before dinner are a nice touch, and I really do like the raisin one. That said, they've frequently been left in a warmer too long and are *really freaking hard* and difficult to cut and/or chew even if you're not a mostly blind 80 year old. Just consider how much of a challenge they present for my Gran.
+/-) The service is *very* hit or miss. I've had excellent service at Max's, but I've also had some of the worst, slowest, most inattentive service too. It really is a crap-shoot. According to their "rules", one visit left us being owed three slices of cake. (We didn't take them up on it. Chocolate cake is not one of my ruling passions.)
+/-) The oversized eclair is amazing. Sadly, I have yet to eat anything else at Max's that is particularly appetizing. Their sweet potato fries are just okay. Their "nachos" were not only stone cold, but were honestly some of the worst looking, smelling, and tasting nachos I've ever encountered. Taco Tree's supernachos are better presented and taste far better than this - and I'm under no delusions about Taco Tree. Their chicken pot pie is enormous and I found it utterly inedible with leaden crust on top (but not on bottom!) and large, uncut mushrooms within. Ew. At best, some of the sandwiches are bland and unmemorable. AT BEST.
-/-) This place is NOT CHEAP, particularly not for the quality of food you're getting. Gran likes the Bistro Salad, which is why we come back. I would just cave and order that too, but I object to paying 11.99 for a salad - and that's before adding chicken, mind you! (Also, the only cheeses they have for their salads are feta, bleu, and asiago - and I cannot stand any of those. What's wrong with some mozzarella or some nice tangy chevre? D:) The rest of the menu is similarly aggressively priced.
-/-) I realize that this is petty, but their menu is unattractive, overwhelming, and rife with spelling and grammatical errors. I'm not perfect, mind, and I too mess these things up - but I am not a professionally put together menu that someone was paid to create. Further, I hate their "rules" schtick. Not only is it trite, but it features gems like this passive aggressive wonder: "We agree that the customer is almost always right. If there is a problem with your food or service, call for the manager, we'll fix it in a flash. But, if you finish your plate, it couldn't have been all that bad! Now, could it?"
I'm not a fan, and I honestly don't understand where all these amazing reviews come from. Max's is a terrible value with overpriced, unappetizing food and I avoid it whenever possible. read more
