That's the worst hair cut I ever had in my whole life, not exaggerating. I found Abby on goggle. A lot of people recommend her, that's why I chose to drive 40 minutes to Maxline, to get a hair cut. We both speak Chinese to each other, I told her that I don't want to cut it short or anything. I want to fix a little bit because I'm going to my partner's house for Christmas. Also that my hair is thick, so I can't cut it short. Otherwise, it will stick up like crazy. In the end, I lost 70% of my hair. It's a nasty cut, she clams there is a Communication gap between us, so that's why it then out this way. I think the problem here is she doesn't listen. I show her the picture of the hairstyle I want. This looks nothing like the style I want. She was just doing her own thing, totally ignored about what I want or say. I was in desperate need of a haircut and wanted to cut it before the weekend. I called Abby on Friday around 1PM and she got me in at 5 on the same day! Im new to the area so this was my first time cutting my hair in Austin. I saw good reviews on yelp so I gave them a shot. Let me just say--I'm so glad I did because this was one of the best haircuts I've ever gotten! When I got there at 5, she was finishing up on a previous customers hair. I only had to wait a few minutes!! When she asked me what I wanted, I could tell she was listening to me so she can give me what I really wanted. After a few minutes of talking, she got a good idea of my vision and started chopping away. It only took her ~30 mins and I was SHOCKED at the final product. I love it so much! My first experience with Maxline was with Ebbie. She was incredibly skilled, and told me that the haircut I selected would make my head look like a mushroom from the back. Well I listened to the professional, and chose another haircut. Ebbie executed it perfectly, and it turned out better than I expected. After my haircut was finished, she got her brother Wing to style my hair. He definitely enjoys the more trendy hairstyles because he always curls my hair in the same manner. The curls are concentrated at the bottom, but aren't too full/big. My dye job was with Ricky. Despite my virgin black hair, he was capable of dyeing my hair orange red without bleaching it. I've been having very great experience with Tony Thanh. He's very knowledgeable about different hairstyles, hair texture of different people, colors, and scissor techniques. He's also very honest and gives great recommendations on what looks great and won't look good on you. Last year I went from very long hair to short hair - my first time doing this, so I was nervous. Tony gave me good advice and assured me that I was in good hands, and I was so happy with the outcome. 3 months ago I wanted to dye my hair and asked for his recommendation. He advised me not to dye my whole head because I have short hair, which means I need a haircut every 3-4 months and it's a waste of money to keep touching up the base with colors so often. If I don't touch up it will look awful and bother other people. He didn't make a good point that I didn't think about, but what I appreciated most is that he gave me a very honest advice and didn't try to make money from me like that. If he was all about money, he would've agreed to what I wanted to do, and he would just have me come for touching up often and get lots of money that way. He obviously didn't do that. Instead, he recommended highlight. I left it up to him to pick out the color for the highlight and I didn't even check before he applied to my hair - yes, he has earned my trust that he would never mess it up or make me look ridiculous. He picked out 2 colors - brown and burgundy! I looked amazing with these highlights and got so many compliments on my medium bob hairstyle and the highlights. Tony is my go-to hair stylist and I highly recommend him. FYI: he's off on Wednesdays, and appointments are highly recommended. read more

I came here before and luckily ran into Hai. He cut my hair and I loved it and he said come back for color. Here I am and I'm happy with the results! I wanted a purple ombre/balayage and the results had a little bit of blue which I'm not really mad about, it's different. I made an appointment at 10 am and walked in a little before and he was already ready and planing out the colors! He washed my hair and was very detailed with the coloring. I was in need of a quick haircut and Ricky got it done. Since this was last minute, I thought Chinatown would be the best bet in terms of availability and price, esp for Asian hairs. I called all 3 hair salons in Chinatown and Maxline was the only place where someone actually spoke proper English. Got an appointment for the same day and was assigned to Ricky by chance. I think he's actually one of their better hairdressers. He was very fast and skilled and I can tell he knew what he was doing. He managed to tame my Asian hair in less than 20 mins. Even though we didn't fully agree on what style would look nice, Ricky still did his best to find a nice compromise. For $16, I say this is a pretty good haircut! Not sure if I'll come back here but if you're shooting blind at a new hair salon, give this place a try. Just make sure to make an appointment. It's located right next to First Chinese BBQ (took me a while to find it). Also, don't be surprised by the interior. Pretty happy usually with the haircuts here. They accept walk ins, but prefer you to schedule beforehand. Whenever you come in, just tell whoevers at the desk if your a walk in who just wants a trim or a scheduled person who needs some styling. That helps out the process a lot. There's only 2-3 people doing cuts at a time, so walk in at your own risk (though I've never had to wait too long before as a walk in). If you've never been, best thing is to show a pic of what you want. Don't worry, they all speak English. It's just easier to get an idea across. They usually get close to what you ask for. If I want a value priced cut when I'm in town, I come here. They keep the place clean. It is a little smaller with 4 stations, and seating for about 7 people waiting. There's a stack of magazines while you wait. The restrooms are alright. Private one in the back. Expect to pay around $25 read more

I recently visited Austin and was in need of some color change in my hair. My Austin friend recommended Maxline because he goes there for all his haircuts. The gentleman named Wing was the stylist who did my hair. I said I wanted some light brown highlights but not too much and well blended in with my dark brown hair and needed a little trim. After two hours, I love the ending result! He took such great care of my hair and spent a good time with my trim. He is very talented and well skilled because even for a trim, he was very thorough and kept making sure I was ok with it. As for the highlights I'm just so happy with it! He styled it afterwards by curling it so that the highlights stand out more. He did exactly what I showed him. I will definitely come back to Maxline whenever I'm visiting Austin. This is a cool salon. Fancy mirrors in a industrial-like new store. Ask for Amy. If you want one modern, chic, clean cut come here. Its relatively cheap and they put more attention to your hair. It is actually a steal compared to other main chains. They speak okay english (jsut giving you heads up). They have relaxing shampooing. I recommend eat first - the Chinese BBQ or the Saigon Pho place. Then cut. And do some grocery shopping if you need to. read more

This review is overdue by about 2 years. I moved to Austin in 2011 after having lived in Asia for most of my life and quickly found that hairstylists here didn't know how to cut Asian hair. Almost two years later I was referred to Maxline by a friend who gets his hair done by Ricky. However, at the time Ricky was getting a lot of clients and I wasn't about to wait a week just for an appointment with a hairstylist I've never met, so I went with Shan who was relatively new there at the time. Long story short Shan has been the only guy to cut my hair every month for the past two years. The only times I've been unsatisfied were when he would finish the haircut and I'd ask for changes. Now I've learned my lesson. Trust your stylist. When they know what they're doing and you don't, they'll turn you from a 3 to a 7, and Shan knows what he's doing. Don't believe me? Give Maxline a shot. Shan only works there two days out of the week so call and make an appointment. A haircut here is $18 but I always give $20. It's a small monthly price to pay to look fly. read more

The service is great. It's no secret that Asian hair is different from other hair, so being of Asian descent, my hair needs to be cut by somebody who understands Asian hair. Everyone in Maxline understands Asian hair. The barbers in Maxline make sure to do a good job and don't rush. They're very friendly and I've found them to be quite stylish as well. I'm super picky about my haircut. I will postpone a hair cut and let it grow insanely long instead of risking a bad hair cut. Guys have it so much easier, if the haircut sucks they can just shave it off or it will grow back in a week or two. For girls, it's disaster for weeks. Maxline is located in Austin's small "Chinatown". Before or after the hair appointment, I like to shop at the grocery store or eat at the restaurants nearby. The staff is decently friendly, they have questionable English ability. You should always take advantage of the shampoo - it was a wonderful 10 minute head massage. No additional fee! Ricky is entertaining, but often answers the phone in the middle of my cut (booking other clients). And Abby misunderstood what my gf asked her and even gave her 20% tip. At first it looked ok from the front. But if you see from the back, it was clear she didn't get her job done. Took three months growing out my hair and the dude kept cutting through it when I kept telling him to stop cutting and specifically told to stay away from parts I've been growing out. yesterday was my first day to this place. I am very excited to get the color that I like and hope is suitable for me. but something went wrong. I made an appointment around 12pm and I arrived on time. but I have to wait for my hair stylish because he still serving one of his customer and it reaches around 12:25. Okay maybe thats not a problem for me but when he's done he showed me some color for example and i was showed him my picture that i want exactly same as that color. And he found one which is okay for me. at that time he wanted to make my hair a bit layer style at the bottom. I told him to make it not shortened. but after that I saw my hair was short and I lost a few parts under my hair. My stylist was Ricky, I heard good reviews about him so I decided to take a chance. He's the only Vietnamese stylist there too btw. I wouldn't say I'm extremely picky but for the most part I don't want a bad haircut. He was nice enough to take me in as a walk in right away. I told him I wanted a trim and yada yada 30 mins later after washing blowdrying and styling my hair I was done. I think it wasn't bad he gave me some layers here and there. Overall my hair felt lighter and healthier! It cost me $35 with shampoo and styling. I would recommend Ricky for haircuts. 3 stars only because I waited outside forever, not very professional to make a client wait for your business to open.
