Cucciolo Famiglia - Spaghetti and meatballs

Cucciolo Famiglia

My parents were so excited to introduce my fiancée and I to Cucciolo Famiglia, and for good…read morereason!! From the moment we entered the restaurant, the pastry display, soothing atmosphere, and kind servers set the tone for a relaxing, luxurious evening. Our server Gia came right to our table and remembered my parents from a previous visit, which always feels good. She quickly got us started with a salami board, a bottle of (amazing!) wine, and a complimentary bread basket, which we absolutely devoured. When it came time to order entrees, Gia also helped a few members of our party make the ever-difficult decision - a primi or second entree?? Regardless of our choice, everyone was delighted by their meal. The food had clearly been freshly prepared and was fantastic from appearance to taste. I highly recommend the walnut pesto, to which I added chicken. Portions were generous but not overwhelming, and Gia continued to check in to see if we needed anything. Make sure to ask about the specials - my dad absolutely loved his. Finally, dessert! As a large party, we got several desserts to split: the apple tart, the devil's food cake, a Nutella panna cotta, and chocolate gelato. Even though we were stuffed from dinner, dessert was worth every bite. I wanted to try more but simply had no more room. In summary, I can't recommend Cucciolo Famiglia highly enough to families looking for a special meal, couples seeking a romantic date night, friends looking for an intimate catch-up, or, as we saw on our trip, prom groups! Prices are very reasonable for quality, the menu offers something for everyone, and outdoor seating lets families with young children watch as their kids play in a nearby grassy field. Do make a reservation, though, as seating can be limited, and you don't want to miss this!

I have been to the spot several time in various guises. It's a great location. This iteration seems…read morelike the best for the area: it's very family friendly, with tons of games and playground area for the younger set. I came at 5:45 on a Monday (because no other places are open on Mondays!), and was one of maybe four me. In the place. The rest were moms with one or two (or more!) kids, some waiting for dad to join them after work. I ate in a covered patio that in a few months will be too hot to endure. But tonight, mid-March, it's a sunny delight. I ordered a smashburger and a Kingstown Negroni. Drae stirred my drink and out the order in, and it arrived with fries just minutes later. Juicy double patty burger, caramelized onions, cheese, salt & pepper fries. Fresh and very tasty. WiFi was fast, music was smooth but subdued. (Think Sade and Barry White dueling. Wish I wasn't alone!) Kids were everywhere, but very well-behaved and in explore mode, which I find adorable! There are outside areas covered in open or tarps, clear flexi-glass walled off areas, and true "indoor" places you can watch TV in. Everything from Top Gear to REN & Stimpy. A great way to spend an early dinner/very late lunch.

Overall tasty and the patties are cooked well done as advertised but even with that heads up it was a bit too charred for my taste. Highly recommend splitting a starter of fries with a friend (bigger bang for your buck) which comes with ketchup and aioli or getting a side of fries for yourself! They were super crispy and you can also get them curry-seasoned though I actually preferred the regular fries which were already delicious. They also had a nice selection of drafts. You order at the front and it's self-seating. Staff were friendly and our food was prepared quickly and brought out to us. A casual spot combining brews and solid food. Family friendly and there were many kids around. Plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors!

Came here for dinner recently and had an OK experience, but there were a few problems with the…read moreservice and the food. First, I made a reservation for 7 PM on Saturday so we could go shopping and then grab dinner afterwards. I understand that a lot of other people probably had a similar approach, but I was disappointed that the restaurant was running behind and we were seated about 20 minutes late. That being said, I heard the hostess tell a group of 4 people without a reservation that their wait time would be 3 and a half hours (!). Of course, that group immediately walked out, but that's pretty crazy, especially because I think the restaurant was closing at 11 PM. While we were waiting to be seated, we grabbed a table in the bar area and ordered a drink. The staff member who took our order was nice but it did take longer than expected to get the drinks, probably because it was so busy. They may need to hire more staff to handle the onslaught of customers, I guess :) Anyway, eventually we were seated in a booth, and the dinner commenced! Our server was nice but was pretty absent throughout our meal, which was a little frustrating. The beer menu had an OK selection, although time for a little rant: I was a little confused by the "By the handle" and "By the neck" categorizations. Of course I kind of intuitively knew this meant draft and bottled beer, but "by the handle" is such a weird way of describing draft beer to me, since you have handles of liquor, etc. My wife pointed out that the "handle" in this case was referring to the handle used to pour the draft beer, in case anyone else didn't immediately get it :) The complimentary bread and butter was pretty decent, so we were off to a good start food-wise. I ordered a "small" Caesar as an appetizer and then got a burger and fries for my entree, while my wife also got the Caesar and the garlic sirloin with mashed potatoes as her entree. I put "small" in quotes because it was actually pretty darn big. I chose not to finish it since I wanted to save room for my entree :) It wasn't bad, though. Eventually (things were slow!), our entrees arrived. My burger and fries were OK, but the fries were unfortunately lukewarm. My wife didn't like her steak because of the intense "smoky" flavor, and it was also supposed to be garlicky, and it definitely wasn't :) I took a bite! The mashed potatoes were decent. Overall, the downsides outweighed the positives for me at Firebirds. I can't imagine coming back here, but if a friend really wanted to hit it up, I wouldn't complain too much :)

Today I had baked tilapia stuffed with crab + mashed potatoes and broccoli with the crab sauce and it was probably my favorite meal out of everything I've tried there before (their steak, surf&turf and fries are also always amazing). I also got a half slice of strawberry shortcake to go and can't wait to enjoy it later - it looked fresh and delicious:) I've had their chocolate cake before and both times it was excellent. Their drinks also consistently deliver - we've tried both their cocktails and wine. Their wines are always reasonably priced and I've enjoyed them more than in some "fancier" spots in Durham. Love this spot and will be back many more times.

Not that great and the fries were more fried than potato. Maybe 2/5. I got a greek salad with chicken and it was oddly sweet? Like really sweet and the feta is a strange texture (i love feta this one tastes different almost like the vegan cheeses). Also, $24 for a greek salad with chicken...? Little too much. Chicken was good but not a great salad. Service was super quick, in and out in less than an hour and we take our time eating. Overall, wouldn't come back for food but would totally come back for the cake!!
