EXCELLENT sea food. A pleasant surprise for this Long Islander who is surrounded by some of the best and freshest seafood around. Since I'm in New England, I had to start with the clam chowder which had a nice, smokey taste. The clams were fresh and the overall flavor was wonderful. For my main course I had a yellowfin tuna grilled in a Thai peanut sauce, served with black rice. Interesting medley of flavors and quite delicious. Portions were "just enough." Not too much, not too little. I left satisfied and NOT stuffed. I'm not in this area often, but I have to remember this place if I'm ever back again. Great food, great server. I ate here with a group of seven coworkers. Everyone's dish looked appetizing and well executed. Everyone enjoyed their dish, even the bloke who ordered steak at a seafood restaurant (said it was exceptional). I had the wedge salad for an appetizer, which I thought was a little on the small side... I had the scallops which were perfectly prepared, and accompanied by a delicious mix of summer corn salad, polenta and chorizo bits. The servers were knowledgeable about the dishes/wine pairings and attentive to our needs. I consider myself a food and wine connoisseur and this restaurant holds up to the "big city" standards. We were back again, and again the food was wonderful. We started with martinis and two each of the oyster varietals (I would recommend doing this, so as to try everything they've got because there really is a wonderful and always-changing selection). Excellent. For my entree, I had the seared tuna with snap peas and forbidden rice-- so delicious! Perfectly cooked tuna, seared with a raw, sushi quality interior, and served in a saffron sauce that was absolute perfection. The snap peas were fresh and sweet, and provided a great, crispy contrast to the toothsome rice and tender tuna. A very well thought out dish. My better half had the salmon, which was enjoyable as always. We ended the meal with an apple bread pudding that we couldn't resist finishing, despite being quite full. We sat outside on the patio to eat, which was nice. Per usual, the service left something to be desired (I had to inquire after our wine and our waitress was rather spacey). I've only gone to Max Amore and Max Fish in the Max chain and I prefer Max Fish. The food is reasonably priced and the seafood is as fresh as you can get it in the Hartford County area. I especially like coming here for their happy hour. They have a good drink selection and the bar bites are above average. My favorite is that they have oysters on the happy hour menu, what a steal! I also love that they have late night happy hour in addition to before dinner. Must try if you are a fan of seafood! read more

My favorite of the Max restaurants. I have eaten in the dining room and at the bar. Love sitting at the bar and people watching! They have a very interesting and seemingly frequently changed cocktail list, and trying different ones is great fun. My favorites, the Belle de Jour and the Jack Rose. The Quahog Clam Fritters, wow! All the happy hour items are very reasonably priced and delicious. Last time I ate in the dining room I got the sea scallops. They were amazingly sweet and perfectly cooked with the right amount of sear. Desserts, out of this world. Hot Fudge to the Max is the right size for sharing (way too big for one!) and may be the best ice cream sundae I have ever had. read more

We usually go for the fish and chips, raw oysters, thai toast, clam chowder, and calamari. The fish literally tastes like someone just caught it and threw it in a fryer. If I hadn't gone to Bricco the following night, I probably would have given this four stars - this is one of those times I need the half star! I will say the bartender made probably one of the best martinis I've had in awhile. Perfectly dry, Bombay Sapphire up with a twist - excellent! Asked to sit outside and they were able to accommodate. Lovely late summer evening and a nice scene. Started with the grilled octopus salad to split. If I had known how good this was going to be I would have never have shared it. The octopus was perfectly grilled and served tossed with fingerling potatoes, chorizo sausage and garlic with a bit of olive oil, lemon and sea salt - wow! The other appetizer we split was the buffalo shrimp and it was okay. Bigger shrimp than the usual "popcorn" sized shrimp but the flavor wasn't particularly noticeable. Average... Main course was the fluke for me and it was good. Nice sized portion and cooked well but nothing remarkable. My guests had the cod and seemed to think it was just fine but again nothing remarkable. Wine list was okay to good with a nice variety. Had the cheese plate for dessert and it was pretty decent. Again, done well but nothing out of the ordinary. We ate here the other night. The server was great; she was so accommodating to my husband and I and our 16 month old. We had oysters for appetizer which were nice and fresh and I had a lobster which was cooked perfectly! Wife and I had a gift certificate from her best friend so we made reservations on vacation here. Saturday night the place was packed, and now I know why. Fine white table cloth dining in a hustling restaurant, with knowledgable and efficient waitstaff. Our waited knew the menu better than most would.....and patiently described it. Made suggestions. Warm bread was amazing.....salads were very good. Both meals were prepared very nicely. As good of a restaurant as any seafood in Portland Maine....and we have some great ones. I was impressed. My boyfriend and I have been to this restaurant more times than I can remember. The food is always good, and their daily specials are fresh and innovative. Our servers have always made the extra effort to communicate with the kitchen to make something special or different than what is on the menu. During happy hour (4-6?) and the last hour of service (usually starting at 10 pm) they have an impressive selection mini bites for $2, and the quality of the food is not diminished one bit. OVERALL, I had a great experience. So this was my first time here with a date (the first date... no pressure there lol) Decor The main dining room was classy. It was freezing outside but I was warm and cozy inside. It also had a romantic vibe. Service We had Rachel as our server. She was very accommodating and sweet. My date later expressed that when he called for reservations, the management had requested that we sit in the main dining room to make a great first impression. I live in town and have been here multiple times. As I am sure all the staff are nice, every time I come here with my family we sit with Cheryl. She is pleasant she puts up with my kids who are well behaved but have their moments. Her service is top notch and always with a smile. We have never had a bad meal nor bad service from any servers. Now the manager Sonny: He comes up to my 7yo son when we're sitting at the raw bar and he takes a lobster out so he can pet it. He is very pleasant and also stopped once or twice on our visits to be social. Also the dude at the raw bar with I think a goatee was excellent as well. Last night was the first time I have ever eaten at Max Fish and it didn't disappoint one bit. We started with the fresh oysters and OMG were they amazing!!! I then couldn't decide between the Salmon or the Tuna so I asked the waiter who told me they were both amazing but the Scallops even better. Sea Scallops a La Plancha with roasted pumpkin hummus, chick peas & quinoa, pomegranate vinaigrette, salted sesame brittle was what I ordered and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I visited Max Fish this past Thursday for dinner and had a very enjoyable time. Unfortunately the nearly empty restaurant at 7:45pm showed the signs of the economy. The service was excellent. Friendly, informative and very unobtrusive throughout the entire meal. My date and I had decided to share a bottle of wine and were very impressed with the wine list; by the glass offerings were quite extensive and the prices were average. I had decided on the lobster bisque as an app and my date had gone with the buffalo shrimp. The bisque was a velvety perfection and the shrimp were nice and spicy. For dinner I chose the lobster cobb salad and my date chose the lobster & mascarpone ravioli. The lobster cobb salad is actually not a part of the dinner menu but a part of the shark bar menu, the waitress was happy to take the order anyway with out any problems. The salad is huge and comes with a mound of fresh picked lobster meat. The vinaigrette on it is very subtle and does not over power the salad at all. I sampled a piece of the ravioli, lobster was bursting at the seams of those little pillows packed with flavor. We took some time to digest and then looked over the dessert menu. We had decided to share the Hot Fudge to the MAX. Hands down, the best sundae that I've ever eaten. caramelized bananas atop Tahitian vanilla ice cream with warm hot fudge, whipped cream and salted almonds. Having worked at Max Amore in a past life, I am disappointed that it took this long for me to discover the amazingness that is Max Fish! I came here with a colleague on a Saturday at 1 for a business lunch. Our service was prompt, friendly and helpful - our waters were never empty, and he was chock full of knowledge and recommendations. The only faux-pas that I *have* to point out (knowing what high standards Max's has for service) was that the waiter was clearly not trained on proper bottle service. He entirely skipped the wine presentation - no sample to test for corkage - and just poured away. I'm sure with some training they could easily fix this and it definitely didn't detract from the rest of our amazing experience! The Domaine de la Becassonne Côtes du Rhône we ordered (50% Roussane, 30% Grenache Blanc, 20% Clairette) was out of this world good, especially for an affordable $40! Richly textured with absolute perfect balance and a silky finish. The rest of the wine menu was impressive as well - it's not novel length, but every single selection clearly had a place and purpose. Hat tip to the sommelier, who clearly values quality over quantity! There were so many awesome options on the appetizer menu, we had a hard time choosing just two! We ultimately settled on the baked oysters with brown butter hollandaise and the Point Judith calamari which were perfectly fresh, salty and savory. The pepper almond romesco sauce that came on the side was delicious. For our entrees, my friend had the "Bombster" Scallops a la Plancha with Soft polenta, root vegetables and a walnut-sage pesto & saba balsamic. To die for. I decided to go light and had a bowl of the lobster bisque and the seasonal chopped salad. The salad was delicious and tasted like fall on a plate - fresh greens, Glastonbury apples, roasted butternut squash, dried cranberries, toasted walnuts, pumpkin seeds, blue cheese crumbles with cider vinaigrette. But the lobster bisque is what really stole the show for me - big chunks of juicy lobster claws in what was the most creamy, savory, heavenly bisque I have ever had. We also split a side of bacon and onion roasted brussels sprouts which were fantastic. And.. I hear they have an awesome happy hour! $1 oysters, cheap bar bites, $5 cocktails & wines by the glass. Disappointment, first visit, went on Father's Day thinking it was an upscale restaurant judging by the menu. We had an reservation at 5PM and plenty of empty table but we were seated near the bar and was noisy. We liked the crackers in the bread basket but the rolls were too hard. Our lobster bisque was an disappointment, it tasted weird, not sure what the chef put in it. The scallops were beautiful and cooked perfectly. The sweet potato fries was another disappointment, over cooked, burnt, and dry. If you want good food and delicious sweet potato fries, go to Max Burger! read more

Have always had a great brunch here! Usually I partake in a special but switched things up yesterday. I OF COURSE indulged in the bloody mary bar - which let's be real, is a meal in itself! I opted out of the regular brunch menu this visit and stuck with raw bar choices. Some jumbo shrimp cocktail, a couple oysters (at the recommendation of my server) and some clams. A little mix up in the order (not enough shrimp between me and my girl friend) but the server of course made the correction quickly. Normally I go with the Baltimore style shrimp (shrimp tossed in old bay - amazing), but stuck with the traditional and I'm glad I did. I got my old bay shrimp fix at the bloody bar and the shrimp cocktail were huge - multiple bites :) I just don't think you can go wrong here. I'm been coming here every month (when I get the chance) for the week night happy hour; if you were smart you would do the same. They have an excellent week night happy hour. Great drinks, great food, reasonable prices. I especially love to get a whole bunch of dollar oysters and a nice cocktail and just go ham. That's write, I said it. I "go ham" on oysters and cocktails. Just like Don Draper in Mad Men. That's just the kind of guy I am. Haven't been here for a full dinner but I felt the happy hour alone warranted a review. It is with a heavy heart that I write this- Max Fish may have jumped the shark. I'm a junkie for this place but our last happy hour visit was just off. An off night or a sign of a decline? Pros: fast service! Cons: raised prices! $7 for a tablespoon of tuna tartare Shrimp cocktail had an abundance of lavender, oddly. Two bite-sized pulled pork sliders for $5. A watery campechana with very little meat and about 1/10th of an avocado. They forgot our fries. Memorization isn't impressive if you can't actually memorize. Typically my favorite, but now that TGI Friday's has unlimited tuna and avocado crisps for $10 and we spent $50 on this without booze, the edge goes to corporate. read more

What a surprise. I was in Glastonbury for business. I have celiac (gluten intolerance) so I have to be careful what I eat. I did a bit of research and this place was listed as having a gluten free menu and we were in the mood for fish so we decided to give it a try. We had no reservations but it was the Tuesday after Labor Day we were able to get a table with no problems. Before we even sat down I told the hostess I wanted to look at a gluten free menu. She said when we sit down the waitress will bring one over. Not only was it one of the most diverse gluten free menus I have ever seen it didn't feel like gluten-free, which was great. The appeteizers were great (especially the calamari that was sauteed as opposed to fried) and my main course, Grilled Scottish Salmon with Pesto-potato mashed, sweet corn & snap pea succotash, smoky tomato butter was awesome. While I'm not in the Glastonbury area often, when I am back I am definitely doing MaxFish! read more

I will start as I will finish, Simply stated, DON'T BOTHER. I gave this 2 stars only because the service was decent, ambiance nice and bathrooms clean. I had heard decent things over the years (maybe time was the issue, it just got neglected), and Yelp reviews decent which is really beyond me - just I suppose there are a wide variety of people in the world. We are not wealthy, if we were we would be "foodies". We love good food, for instance had an AMAZING meal (per-theater special) at Cafe Bouchard in NYC last year), but also love anything prepared well and with thought or even love - whether a burger or a Wellington. Anyhow, we stopped at Maxx Fish as we googled it on the way back from skiing, we were tired and with our 6 year old. Again, the service was quick and attentive and a nice room - but THAT WAS IT! My wife called it correctly, a very expensive diner. She ordered numerous oysters and I "colossal" shrimp cocktail. Only thing colossal about them was the price at $3.50 per, same as I paid at Union League Cafe in New Haven a few weeks ago but half the size and one was mealy/mushy (scary)! Two of her oysters were excellent, the other two were terrible, she said maybe hey weren't fresh but who knows, could have been her taste. The waitress was not sure which two were which as the two that looked the same were not next to one another. Anyhow... Most of the fish on the menu directly stated they were from the Gulf, including Mahi Mahi which is available readily and much better form South America and other locals. Even shrimp can be attained from less controversial places - but I figure a little extra petroleum isn't going to be my downfall so what the heck... She ordered the Mahi grilled and I the "special" striped bass filet. Both came with some apple-kale side. We ordered as side of our favorite Broccoli Rabe. They were able to accommodate my request for no bacon in the kale which was nice as it meant it wasn't precreated. My son had fish and chips. My wife asked the waitress when ordering if the "chips" were made home made or bagged, and she said "they are the only thing on the menu that we don't make here". I mention this not because the thin Macdonalds looking fries were bad, in fact they were fine for what they are - but at the end of the meal the statement I made really tells all, which was "it is somewhat disconcerting that the very best thing we ate tonight was the only thing the restaurant DIDN'T make!". My wife, who is a bit of a gourmet cook herself, suggested that there was not an actual chef on site, and that the kitchen was likely filled with "the help". There was nothing technically wrong with the fish, both were grilled as described, just that neither had any taste but grilled salt. The Sea Bass was a bit fishy - which is not standard for that fish, and the Mahi was less flavorful on it's own but again not bad - not overcooked much though a bit chewy. The kale apple mixture was a joke, overcooked salty and a strange combination in the first place - we both found it inedible. The rabe was the same, overcooked and salty, more of a mush in a bowl, like boiled spinach with chunks of almost uncooked garlic (they were good!). The fried fish was way overcooked, and if I thought my son would have eaten it anyhow I might have had them make another, but the pieces were fairly thin so mostly fried dough anyhow and nothing special in spicing etc. Bottom line is that we spent $130 pre-tip (1 gin and tonic and 2 glasses of white wine but no desert) for a thoroughly unsatisfying meal and would not go back unless invited by the chef to prove that the experience was an anomaly. Simply stated, DON'T BOTHER. read more

Our very sweet server Liz kindly walked me through all of the vegetarian options -- these were not menu items but dishes the chefs could whip up. Last time I visited I chose a vegetarian paella, which was fantastic; and this time I went for the pasta and it was incredible -- alongside a bevy of fresh vegetables they added corn, which offered a light sweetness to contrast the acidity of the sauce. Really inventive. The pasta dish was better than pastas I have enjoyed in Italy. A delicious and fun visit; and I sincerely appreciate the restaurant's flexibility for vegetarian diners. read more
