I went to Maude in January of last year at the recommendation of a friend. I needed a trim and booked Ashley, who did a great job. She understood exactly what I wanted, took off no more length than necessary to clean up my dead ends, and the cut grew out beautifully. I CAN recommend Ashley's services, at least in regards to haircuts.
Two weeks ago, I decided to try Maude again for a trim and color. It had been about 10 weeks since I had colored, so I had dull blonde hair and root growth. My appointment was booked with Maria, who suggested a partial foil to me when I sat down in the chair. I had booked single process and asked her for a bright, all-over blonde on the cool/white end of the blonde spectrum with no yellow. I also asked for a trim just to get rid of my dead ends with no length taken off. She suggested layers but I have curly hair and curly hair CANNOT do layers, or you get the dreaded pyramid hair. I told her as much, and we moved forward with the color.
When I walked out of the salon, my "trim" had turned into what I estimate to be at least an inch of length taken off on the bottom layer, and probably closer to 1.5 inches for the shorter layer- because yes, despite me asking her not to, I got layers cut into my curly hair! (When it's blown out, the layers look good. The problem is, I have curly hair and don't want to spend an hour every day blowing it out perfectly- hence asking for NO layers. (Do any stylists know how curly hair works?? Why do they all insist on cutting and styling it as if it is straight? Curly hair and straight hair do not behave the same way and cannot be cut and styled the same!) My hair was also a very brassy yellow. I "sat with it" a couple days but it looked even worse when I tried to wear my hair curly- the brassy orange underlayers showed through and it looked a mess.
I booked a re-do, since it is the salon's policy that if you call within 2 weeks you can get a redo if you are unhappy with your service. However, you do have to re-visit the same stylist you sat with the first time. When I sat down and showed her my orange roots (I didn't even address the layers since I worried the suggested "fix" would be to cut up to the shortest layer, undoing a year of growth), Maria told me that is because I came in with roots. I agreed I had, but that is why I'd paid $210 the weekend before... to get rid of them! She told me a partial foil does not color the underlayers, only the top. Since she saw how grown-in my roots are, it boggles me why she'd suggest a partial knowing it would never take care of the roots. I came in with brown roots and left with... orange roots. I take blame for not knowing a partial wouldn't color my hair properly, since had I known that I wouldn't have agreed to one, but these are the "experts", so I hold them to a higher standard. She had to have known a partial foil, which she suggested, was never going to be a good idea for my hair and what I wanted.
The owner, Tina, stepped in to talk to me, understood exactly what I wanted, and told me I'd need a full foil to fix the orange and yellow tones. When I first sat down, Maria told me there would be no charge for a re-do, yet as soon as the first foil was on, she told me they'd have to charge me that day for another partial ($76- so with gratuity for both visits, I am now $300 into these failed highlights). Does it look better now? Yes. But it's still not what I originally asked for, and nowhere near "$300 good looking." There's lighter blonde in there, but there's also still brassy orange, and some of my natural color worked backed in in stripes that don't blend. In other words, three different colors. I can live with it for another 6 weeks until I recolor, but would never purposely choose this look.
I want to like Maude- Ashley did a great job, and Tina, the owner, was very understanding and empathetic. But my stylist literally did the exact opposite of what I originally asked for, then sort of blamed me for the results when I came bck in, as if that's what I'd asked for. (Who asks to pay $210 for orange roots??) The end result, after being charged extra for a fix, is okay, but not great. I won't go back.
EDIT 3/14/2013:
I wanted to update that after reading my initial review, Celeste, an owner of Maude, got in touch with me. She apologized for any miscommunication between me and my stylist and agreed that the partial foil I initially received was not the correct service I should have gotten and said I should not have been charged for the re-do. I thanked her for getting in touch with me and understanding my position and she offered a refund of $96, which was my total that day for the re-do including the gratuity I had added. I can say that the owners definitely seem to take customer service seriously and Celeste was extremely pleasant to deal with and did a world of good in repairing my attitude toward the salon. Thanks Celeste! :) read more
