This is my third time coming here and while I usually book with whoever is available, I'll definitely be requesting for Christine in the future. A very cute and aesthetic salon, near the government center. Check in was quick, and they took me in before my appt time. I liked how the receptionist hung up my jacket for me, so it wouldn't get in the way during the cut. They have a separate room with the hair wash. The chair reclines, and I had my hair shampooed and conditioned, with a small scalp massage. The water was warm, and it felt very nice. For the cut, Soraya did a great job asking me what I wanted, and I showed her sample pictures. She was very skillful and kind. She listened to everything that I wanted, and made sure I felt beautiful after the cut. She also blow dried and curled my hair afterwards. It was wonderful service. I am unsure what the regular rate is for a women's hair cut at a salon, but I thought it was on the pricier end. But girl math says it's a self care day so it was worth it. This was my first time at D-Rock, and I had a great experience! I was looking for a place to cut my hair closer to home, and found so many great recommendations for Heelan, so decided to book an appointment with her. Heelan did not disappoint! She was prompt with my appointment, and did everything I requested for my haircut. She was thorough, and did not rush through the cutting process. I cut off at least 4-5 inches, and she was always great in asking if that was the length I was hoping for. Heelan also styled my hair beautifully after my cut was done. Her assistant gave me a great shampoo and scalp and neck massage, which was a bonus I wasn't expecting! The chair is also a reclining massage chair. Modern interior. I had a women's cut and baby lights with Heelan. A little background - I have dark hair and bleach twice regularly to get lighter tones. With my pregnancy, I stopped bleaching for two years and was excited to bleach again after my pregnancy ended. They wanted me to come in for a consultation. I told stylist I don't like balayage look and prefer to have the whole head bleached to get the color I like. She persuaded me into baby lights because she doesn't like/do global bleaches. I agreed because I have never tried baby lights before. I hated the stripes especially when I told her I don't like balayages. Hair cut was great though. I'm baaaack. I was previously seeing Anna who I met at D Rock. She opened her own salon, but now she's moved out of state and left me a hair orphan. It's currently COVID World so I'm not about to experiment with... the... world, I'm going to go straight to the best. When salons opened again, I scooped up an appt with Don. He truly is the best. My hair was forever long, prob to my butt. I have a new baby boy who is pulling at my baby hairs, so I needed a major chop. I asked for super short. Don keeps it real. He told me no and suggested the length that's meant for me, which is a few inches past my shoulders. I love my haircut! Don is def OCD about haircuts, which is good obviously. He's extremely talented. I'm not doing anything with color right now bec it's COVID World. I wear a mask at work, complemented with a sweat inducing face shield, so I'm NOT really about investing$$$ in color right now. I had a pretty awful experience going back to my hair stylist post pandemic. There was miscommunication about our appointment time and what I wanted to do with my hair. I ended up getting a half done bayalage that looked like it grew out and the cut itself was just choppy. I msged my old hair stylist back in Portland and she found D Rock Salon and told me to book with either two of the stylists here. Don was first available so I made an appt with him. I left a note of what happened with my hair and he called (several times) for me to go in for a hair consult. On the day of my consult, he also happened to have a cancellation so of course I also stayed for that too. He listed, he asked me so many questions, and he was the first person to ever ask me what was different from my hair to the person's hair that I showed him a picture of. He was so thoughtful and considerate of my wants and needs. He's also a multi tasker so in the time I sat waiting for my hair to lighten and get a wash, he had also done two other girl's hair (I think they were just cuts...?) I've been a loyal customer for 5 years. My most recent experience has changed that. I showed my stylists the color I wanted. I was fairly blond and wanted darker pieces added for fall as well as bringing my Baliage higher. She added lightener and then toner. I came out fully brown, not at all like the picture I had shown. No light/blond remained in my hair. Due to time constraints I came back the next day for a correction. I was told they could "wash all the toner out" and I would be as blonde as I was when I walked in. While they did lighted it a bit, I was no where near back to my original blonde. I asked for a refund and was told no and that the only option would be to add more lightener which could damage my hair. I'm now left to accept this brown color for a few months until it's safe to use more lightener. read more

So people, let me tell you. I have been eyeing D Rock Salon for a while now because of all the positive reviews and great photos and honestly, they do not disappoint. Friendly reception staff. Because of Covid, they temperature check and ask you to sign a short form. Totally understandable and I really appreciate the precautions they've implemented. I booked online and chose Allie as my stylist and I'm so happy I did. When I came in, I had waist length hair and was looking to get shoulder length with bangs. I can't stress this enough, LISTEN to your stylist. She suggested against the bangs in combo with short hair because of the odd look plus the high maintenance to keep the bangs looking good which included almost daily blow drying and she was right. I seriously appreciate how real and honest she was with me and answered all my questions. She is super sweet and did such an amazing job with my hair cut by taking her time and making sure my hair was cut evenly and proportional. I honestly don't trust going anywhere else now. Been going to Don at DRock for 4+ years, and still loving it! This time, I'm writing a review based on it's COVID/safety protocol. I'd been debating on whether or not I should get a haircut - Although the pandemic has "slowed down" somewhat, I'm still mostly quarantining myself and refraining from being around people since I'm pregnant. But as my due date nears, I am just in desperate need of some grooming! As always, I made the reservation online for a Sunday morning. The place had only two other customers, with two other stylists and two other staff - It seems like they're doing a great job keeping everyone far apart. Pre-COVID, this place was usually packed on Sunday mornings. Upon arrival, I had to fill out a COVID questionnaire and get my temperature checked. Everyone wore a mask, and the lady who washed my hair also had gloves on. At 9 month pregnant, I felt very safe and comfortable with all the precautions that this salon have in place. The head massage was amazing, and, Don the magician as I call him, gave me an awesome haircut as always. I love that the past four years I've had the privilege of not worrying about how exactly I want my hair to look before going to the salon. I can just walk in, ask him to "give me a haircut that makes me look good and on par with the season," and voila, he gives me something that I love. He's like, my hairstylist soul mate. lol read more

I do not recommend getting an express keratin complex treatment at D Rock salon due to the subpar results. I did a ton of research before choosing a salon for a keratin express treatment. D Rock salon provided all the "right" answers and assurances I needed to book an appointment. I even booked with the owner as an extra assurance since I assumed he would be committed to a positive end result. Unfortunately, An express keratin treatment at D Rock is equivalent to no keratin treatment at all. See a photo of my hair after two washes using specialty keratin shampoo and conditioner. I took this photo an hour before I returned to D Rock to talk to the owner about my disappointment in the results and inquire about the expected result. His response was this was the best result I could get from that particular keratin product and my hair is basically an example of a successful treatment result. What?!? If D Rock salon knows that this is the expected result they should show honest photos of final results that look similar to my "after"photo which is reality, and is not acceptable by any standard. I've had express keratin treatments in the past that worked well and lasted an acceptable amount of time so my expectations are built on past realistic experiences. D Rock requires a deposit for a keratin treatment, but in return D Rock doesn't offer any guarantees that they will deliver results. Overall, my disappointment is triple-fold because 1) I am out the $$ for a non working keratin treatment, 2) I will still have frizzy hair all summer, and 3) I can't just repeat the process elsewhere to fix the issue without first giving my hair a break because of the high heat and chemicals that were used. I may try another treatment elsewhere in September but it's more $$, more hair damage, and more chemicals - all things I was trying to avoid by choosing what is supposed to be a reputable salon. read more

The owner, Don, is absolutely amazing. He is so incredibly talented as a stylist but also extremely hard working, genuine, and kind. He makes me feel so special every time I go in. I have gotten my hair done by both him and Nikki. Nikki is another wildly talented stylist who is just as genuine and kind. Nikki Tran is an absolute magician when it comes to working hair. I cannot recommend her enough and highly encourage anyone considering a haircut or balayage to get them done by her. After having a nightmare of an experience with a different salon, I came to her for a renewed balayage. Our consultation was short - 2-3 minutes tops - but she immediately understood what I was looking for and gave me the exact style, and shade of balayage I had shown her. I simply felt comfortable and confident sitting in her chair. I didn't feel pressured to check on my hair or ask many questions, because I knew she was working the sheer magic she did. I am so thankful for her care and attention to detail during the 4-hour long appointment - I can't imagine how much more difficult it is to work behind a mask and stand for so long. She even added some beautiful curls/waves to my hair at the end during our blow-dry session, which I only wish would last for longer than they will! This review is way overdue. I had connected with a different D-Rock stylist via instagram DM. I show them my current hair at the time and the hair color that I'd like to go for, tell them that I have 1.5 hours booked. They say that's fine and if it takes longer, they can adjust. I didn't haev to worry about booking an extended time. I go in and tell the stylist that I'd like to go lighter (as discussed in our DM's) and I see them check their schedule. They then tell me that it's not possible to go lighter, so they'll take me to a medium brown color. I left with black hair. I also told them at the beginning of my appointment that I didn't want to cut my hair at the time. After coloring my hair, they insisted that I cut my hair because everything was uneven and damaged at the ends, so I said okay. I ultimately left unhappy with my results. I originally had jet black hair and the balayage came out very light almost blonde and my hair is still healthy! (Lighting in the pictures don't do justice! I am so happy with my hair! Walid did my hair in April and it looked amazing through October! I could have left it for longer, but decided to get it done two days ago and am so thrilled with the way it turned out. I'm Asian with really dark, baby-fine hair. I needed to lighted it around my face so it wouldn't contrast so much with my fair skin tones and Walid transformed my hair so perfectly again. I don't normally write reviews, but I firmly believe in giving credit where credit is due. This will be a long one, but I strongly encourage you to read it through if you are considering this salon. Here it goes: I live about 4 hours away, and I've been going to Don for balayages and cuts for a little over 3 years now. Don, the owner of the salon, is hands down the best stylist I have been to. He is incredibly talented, passionate and his work speaks for itself. I will tell you exactly why I believe this... Im a natural level 6/7-Somewhere between auburn and strawberry blonde. Ive been bleaching my hair light blonde for the past 8 years. During this time, Ive seen many stylists locally, in different areas & states that I've lived. The majority of the stylists Ive been to were ok, but Ive also had those times where I felt sick to my stomach because of how much money I spent, and how little my hair looked like what I asked for. But rarely anything amazing... until I met Don. Its been a long journey! And because of this journey, through trial and error, I've grown to be very particular about my hair (and you should be too). My hair has always been something that is a priority for me. And I think most ladies, and gents can say the same. You want a stylist who will work with you to get YOUR desired result. You must be willing to listen, and work with your stylist to figure out what realistic expectations are, keeping in mind your hairs' current condition, and your hair "goal." First of all, Don takes the time to listen during his consultations. He communicates with you what he sees from the pictures you bring in. He will go over with you what he thinks you want, and if it is incorrect, he will patiently spend the time to understand what it is that you want, until you feel confident and comfortable enough to proceed. There is absolutely no pressure. He will explain to you what is possible for your hair in a given day, and work with you to come up with a plan of treatment (kind of like a hair doctor) to get your desired result. Next is the process. From coming to this salon many times, there are several things I've picked up on from working with Don. Don is an artist, and his work is his art. He takes his art seriously and you can tell he loves what he does. He has incredible attention to detail. There is a great amount of intelligence and artistic capability behind his work. He is a master of cut and color. Every placement of lightener and snip of his sheers is well thought-out and strategically placed. A lot of critical thinking and chemistry goes into this process, as well as passion and aesthetic eye to deliver the result you are truly wanting. While my hair is processing, and Don has down time, he uses that time to aid other stylists, check in on his own clients or to help explain the coloring process to someone who may need more clarification, always staying respectful, empathetic and humble in his interactions. His salon is busy and he has many aspects of his business that he takes care of, but he is always on top of things and in control. You will never feel like his work is rushed or that he doesn't care. He is calm, cool and collected. I also have to give a shoutout to the sweet assistants at the salon who help with blowouts, toning and shampooing at the shampoo bowl, as well as the ladies at the front desk. Everyone at the salon is friendly, helpful and adds to an already pleasant experience. Not to mention the massage you get at the shampoo bowl is to die for! The shampoo bowls are comfortable and the water is nice and warm. Feels like you're at a spa. I am happy to say, I am willing to spend the money necessary to support my stylist, proudly and with ease. And I am relaxed during the whole process, because I trust Don, and know the quality of his work. I not only admire Don for the amazing stylist he is, but also for being an incredible person. Don is always humble, always hard working, and treats everyone with respect. The salon experience for me now is a positive one. No more anticipation or stress in the chair. Went in with a gorgeous grown out bright blonde balayge and came out with DARK AND GREY HAIR. I repeat, my hair is GREY. People have made so many jokes about it and I am so disappointed. The stylist never told me she was going to make it grey, she only said she will take out the brassiness, to which of course I said okay to. I also had scheduled my appointment for a full head of highlights and Olaplex which total should be $150, but then all said and done I only found out the 'new price' of the procedure done until I was told to pay $265. When I got home I took a closer look and the pics say it all. What the HECK is this SH*T? Do not go here if you're expecting a magical moment. Short and simple. My mom and I have struggled my entire life, literally to find a place to cut my hair. My hair is extremely thick, healthy AF, and silky. Whenever I went to salons or hairdressers, they would all just play with it and butcher it in the end. I even went to Red Door by Elizabeth Warren in Fairfax 14 and it was decent, but the price was not worth it. I loved this place! The staff is friendly, and literally it's worth the price. I had Ji and she was awesome!!!! She layered my hair perfectly and added texture, along with making the flow so much lighter. She's a genuine woman who literally connected with me and shared pieces of her story which just shows how real she is! I also got a balayage, and I LOVE IT! I have been following this salon for almost a year now on Insta. I have been a big fan of all the amazing hair coloring design, style and artistry of these stylist. No, i wasnt particularly following a specific stylist but i thought i would just make an appointment for a cut. Thinking... it cant be that bad, seems like eveyone who works here are talented individuals. Beware. They are not. The two stars are for the salon it self and the shampooing. One star for the cut due to the great conversation i had with Pasha. I made an appintment, via online and it was so easy, with Brittany Jenrette for a 4:15pm appointment. but later on that day i got a call that she was out sick and if i was okay to see a male stylist Pasha. I was like "yeah! Totally fine." I got there. The Salon itself was nice, modern, clean... impressive! I didnt wait very long. I went to get shampooed and she was amazing. Even asked my preferred water temparature and did an amazing head massage. Sadly, i didnt have enough cash to tip her... my fault! I got back to my chair and saw Pasha again and asked what id like to get done. I asked for an asymmetrical/angeled bob thats cut bluntly in the front. Showed him a couple of picture of people with somewhat the same hair type as me and he said "cool!" Our conversation was great. He was nice. Spoke about random topics here and there... then he said i was done. I had to ask him multiple times that i wanted the back shorter. He adjusted it twice. I was there for over an hour and had to leave. I was kind of over asking to make adjustments. My hair on one side is like a normal looking bob and the other side is longer but its not cut right. Not angled. Not cut nicely with the professional details. It looks awful. Uneven. i dont know if i can ever go back to this salon. Now im justifying spending that $55 plus $10 tip. It's alright. I probably won't go back because the location is inconvenient and far away in the middle of nowhere on the lower level of an apartment complex. The cut is ok. It just leaves my Asian hair flat and I have to spend extra time styling it to the way I want - wavy lob instead of a poker straight one. The stylist did not ask me how I usually style my hair - blow dry, air dry, etc. I think that was one of the issues. She also just said that she usually doesn't do layers. I never had a stylist order me with instructions so much about how to move my head for the haircut either. I found it off-putting and annoying. I liked the shampoo massage at least. Front desk check-in was nice and efficient. I usually go to a place in Rockville, but they're usually booked up all the time with limited weekends. Made an appointment with one of the stylists last week for a balayage. The stylist had to last min cancel so I was offered a different stylist in the same appointment time. Shoutout to Michelle who worked magic on my hair. Hair history: I used to dye my hair using black box dye. I knew how bad this is in the hair world, so I had very realistic expectations when trying to lighten up my hair. Got my hair lightened five months ago and came in again last week to lighten it up some more. Michelle was so amazing, and I left already planning to come back to see her in a few months. She talked me through every single thing that she did, was so sweet, and was always checking in on me. I know my hair was super challenging as it had different areas that were harder to lighten, but she somehow made it all look even, and it looks so good!
