I've been going to Heart for over 10 years, and don't trust anybody else with my hair. Before finding her, I struggled with brassiness and orange tones in my highlights. My hair is naturally brown, but I have grays coming in, which makes coloring even trickier because I need gray coverage while still keeping dimensional highlights that look natural. Heart took the time to really understand my hair and, over the years, developed the perfect formula for me. She somehow manages to cover the grays beautifully without it looking harsh or obvious as it grows out, while also keeping my highlights dimensional and free of the brassy/orange tones. What's even more impressive is how much healthier my hair has become since seeing her. She's incredibly knowledgeable about hair health and has taught me so much about how to properly care for my hair over the years. My mom also goes to her and has learned a lot from her as well. Highly recommend!!! I first sent Heart a photo of my hair and an example of the hair I wanted (light/blonde highlights) and booked an appointment. I got there early, so she was working on other clients, and right at 2pm, my appointment time, she started on my hair. By the end of my appointment, someone had JUST walked in. I loved how she times her appointments right on the dot and honors the time of the clients. When I sat down in the chair, she offered some recommendations given my skin tone, and mentioned that the blonde color highlights I originally asked for may not be the most flattering. She wasn't pushy or pressured me to go with her recommendations; I just know nothing about hair, so I was happy to go along with it. She recommended red-violet highlights... and I am blown away how nice the hair color she chose really look amazing! the color really did complement my skin tone. Given my naturally dark hair, the highlights is subtle enough that it's not the most noticeable unless you look closely or in the sunlight which I really like (especially considering I work in a professional environment), so the hair style is perfect. My appointment was about an hour and a half. I got a trim (1 in), bleaching process for highlights, shampoo, dye wash, blow dry + hair curled. This was ~$150 (+tip), which is a GREAT deal. We had great conversations (she gives great life advice!), and even offered me some food and chocolate as we were the only ones there and I was chilling at the bleach processor station. For a quick, no-frills haircut Heart at iHair Salon is your girl! This one woman show took me in for a haircut during early pandemic times and I was thankful to be in-and-out with fifteen minutes. It's almost six months later and my hair is a bit bulky but the shape is still there! Prices are affordable although the shop isn't exactly the type of place you'd go to relax (think what Ali Wong said about pho shops and boxes being everywhere). I have a few friends who got a full balayage treatment for an amazing price and their hair is still holding up months later. I had an amazing experience at IHAIR salon with Heart and I'm so glad I decided to take a chance and come here for a last minute appointment. I normally frequent bougie, high-end places because in my mind, the most expensive the salon the better the cut, right? WRONG! IHAIR salon is what I'd describe as a "hole-in-the-wall" type of place. While clean and sanitary, it is a bit cluttered with kitschy decor, a big departure from the ultra-sleek modern salon I usually go to. Although this made me a little nervous, I eased up a bit when I met Heart- who is super knowledge about what she does. She took the time to look at my reference photos and convinced me to let her thin out my hair a bit (i hesitated since I've had horrible experiences in the past with other stylists who just hacked my hair to death), but Heart explained to me exactly how much she'd take off and why, and ultimately left it up to me. Her virtually screaming at me for even daring to ask, claiming it'd be impossible to achieve that because I did not have a sort of voluptuous hair type as the woman in the photo. I've been to numerous salons in Florida where I live and had to resort to cutting my own hair, because I couldn't find anyone who knows how to layer and thin thick Asian hair. The fancy salons I tried charge a ridiculous amount and then there's barely a dent in my hair but a few layers in the front and a bang trim. So glad I found this salon and Kaya. It's worth waiting and flying back to VA for. She was so great, asking questions at every stage to ensure she was giving me the style I want. The last haircut I gave myself was a hack job with chunky uneven layers in the back. Kaya blended it all beautifully without taking off any of the length. She is a miracle worker! I came in to see Hart for a keratin treatment in August and I am so pleased with the results. I decided this year I finally needed a change and got balayage for the first time. I have fine hair and my biggest fear was having breakage and frizz after getting it colored. That's when I decided on Keratin. Most of the reviews I've seen for keratin are by people with thick hair and I was scared that I would end up with stick straight, flat hair since my hair is so fine. I did a lot of research on Yelp to find a reputable place that had good reviews and that's when I found iHair. Hart has a sweet and bubbly personality and the appointment was a breeze. I told her about my concerns and she made me feel at ease about the treatment. It's lasted me until mid-November, although I will say I only wash my hair max 2 times a week since I have a dry scalp so that's probably why it's lasted this long. I also only use Oribe products since they can be used with colored and keratin-treated hair (highly recommend). The first two weeks I did feel like my hair was flat and would get oily quicker than usual but after that, I have never felt happier. I come out of the shower with smooooth flowy locks that take 2 seconds to comb through. I've noticed less breakage and less hair falling out (I tend to lose quite a bit of hair). After the shower, my hair looks like my a softer version of my regular waves but after a couple of hours it looks more like a blow dry. No small frizz around my face or at the top of my head anymore. Rainy weather doesn't affect my hair at ALLL. I went on vacation after getting this done and it took me only 10 mins to style my hair compared to the full hour it would take before Keratin. The Keratin didn't really affect my color, but my regular hair stylist did say that it takes a bit longer now than usual for my hair to take color whenever I get it toned. Now that the keratin is fading I'm noticing more of my regular wavy curls. It's still smoother than my originally hair still, but now I get a little bit of frizz so I think it's time to go back in for a touch up. Super reasonable price, I believe it was 150$ compared to other places that were charging upwards of $400 for my hair length. read more

Not sure why there are so many positive reviews. I got a haircut there a few months ago but haven't had time to write a review. Every single day since I got my haircut at this salon I get frustrated when I style my hair. My hair serves as a reminder what a crappy job the hair stylist has done. First of all, when I called an appointment a few months ago, the person on the phone was not very courteous. Second, when I came into the salon, the stylist didn't even introduce herself. I showed her some pictures of haircuts that I liked, and she seemed very confident in the end result. The haircut ended up being too short and not at all what I'd wanted it to be. However, when I saw myself in the mirror after she styled my hair with a blow dryer, I liked it or so I tried to convince myself. She used a weird razor cutting technique with scissors as someone else mentioned before. I left unsure about how I felt about the haircut. After I washed my hair and styled it the next day, I realized how terrible and uneven the layers were! She basically chopped off an entire section of my hair on the right side, some of the layers were so short, they were sticking out of my head! Lower part of my hair looks terrible. It's been a few months, but I still can't really do anything about it, because I am waiting for all the uneven and short layers to grow out. She found out about this place after a few searches on yelp for hair coloring 2-3 years ago, and we have been loyal customers ever since. Heart is amazing! She's very talented, careful, and very attentive to what the customers want. Given her quality, her price is extremely reasonable (hair salons in the dmv area could be very expensive). I have been to iHair Salon several times now, and have always been satisified with the results. I discovered the salon through Groupon almost 3 years ago, and have not gone anywhere else since. Located in a building on the corner of Maple Ave and Pleasant St, the salon can be found on the second floor. Signs are not blatantly obvious, and I recommend looking out for the Burke & Herbert Bank (which is in the same building). The salon is small, well-kept and clean. Guests can read magazines or watch movies on their mounted television. Appointments are required and I recommend booking at least a week in advance. Prices vary depending on the stylist, type of service, and length of hair. I have always booked with Heart and her prices are reasonable given her high quality of work. She exhibits incredible enthusiasm and customer attentiveness. She always strives to educate guests on what she is doing (so you will not be left in the dark!). During my last visit, I booked an evening appointment with Heart and she was very accommodating. She began with a 10-minute consultation, and offered recommendations based on the type of look I wanted (haircut and ombre balayage). Throughout my 5-hour appointment, Heart made every effort to ensure that I was comfortable. She put on her favorite movies and even offered me snacks (which she later packed for me to take home). I was ecstatic with the results of my hair. The gradual transition of the ombre was perfect and my hair felt so soft and lightweight. I have the impression that Heart works her clients so she can squeeze in the most customers as possible in a day. It's so hard when you are new in town and looking for a new stylist. Its even harder when the new stylist keeps poking and prodding with questions and with scissors to figure out how to treat you like another number so she can move on to her next client for the day. Not For Short Hair... I'd read so many great reviews and thought I'd def try Heart to cut my hair. My hair isn't super short but above my shoulder. Heart only cuts hair dry which seems to work well on long hair but not at all for short hair. Layers in shorter hair need to be cut even and blend. Her dry cutting technique is done in a downward motion, not by lifting up the hair and making sure layers are even, etc. My hair looked cute when I left but after washing and trying to style it, it was a mess bc there were no consistent layers. All different lengths with no rhyme or reason. I've been getting my hair cut for years and this is the first time I've ever had a dry cut like this where there was no blending of layers. I had the cut fixed at another salon because this cut started looking like a mullet (Miley can pull it off but I'm too old). I'm SO glad I found Heart as my new hair stylist! I can't remember the last time I liked my haircut so much before. For as long as I can remember, I always get long layers with shorter layers (about chin length) in the front to frame my face. I learned from Heart that because my hair is so fine (but I have a lot of it), my hair needs to be cut dry to see the texture. I've never had anyone do that before. I just got my hair cut and colored by Heart today and she is literally the best. Before going to Heart, I went to a big professional salon in the area and was always satisfied, but not thrilled with my cut. I have thin, fine mousy brown hair that is really easy to mess up. I am one of those people who only gets a haircut once a year when I want a major change - whether it be chopping off 12 in. of my hair to donate it, or dying my hair from brunette to blonde to red and then back. For every single one of my big annual hair changes, I have gone to stylist, Heart, at iHair. Every single time Heart has nailed exactly the look I was going for - including when she was dying and cutting my hair the week of my wedding!! Heart has an incredible personality - she's bubbly and fun to talk to - and she's super talented. Heart prefers to cut dry hair. I was a skeptic at first but now I'm a true believer. When she cuts your hair dry, you know exactly how it'll look. Other salons that cut your hair wet will blow dry it to look nice (everyone looks good with a blow out ...) but with Heart's method, you get a real sense of what your hair will look like when you wash and dry it yourself at home. I hesitated writing this review because Heart is a really nice person and I was a loyal client for about 2 years, but I feel like she has gotten sloppy lately, and my last haircut was the last straw for me. She rushed through the cut and didn't seem to follow any sort of identifiable pattern. Even though she likes to cut dry hair, in the past, she had always washed and styled my hair after cutting it, but this time she didn't, and then denied ever doing so for haircut only services, which simply isn't true. What really bothered me, however, was my cut. She seemed to have cut layers on the bottom 3/4 of my hair, but then not on the top 1/4, so I basically have a long layer that lays over shorter layers. Not only that, but there is a big difference in length between the layers. It looks ridiculous and infuriates me every time I style my hair. Of course I am trying to grow out my hair, so I didn't want to get it fixed right away and lose even more length. Another thing that bothered me about Heart was that when I would ask her to color or cut using a certain technique, she would get really defensive and go on a rant about why she does it her way instead of just doing it the way that I, the paying client, would like. For instance, the second to last time I got my hair cut, she was twisting sections of my hair and then cutting into the twists. When I asked her what she was doing, she said that's how she cut layers. I asked her not to do it that way because then every time I got my hair cut, she would be cutting new layers and my hair would become shorter over time. Plus, I explained that I tend to get really bad split ends, so if she isn't cutting the same strands of hair at each appointment, then I will always have split ends remaining in my layers. She ranted about why she cuts her way, but then she followed my request. The kicker is that at my next appointment, I reminded her that I didn't want her to use the twisting technique to cut my layers, and she denied ever using that technique! Regarding my concern with my split ends, she said one should never cut the same strands of hair from one appointment to the next... which makes absolutely no sense! Also, when she started cutting my hair at my last appointment, she seemed puzzled and asked who cut my hair last... She did! It bums me out because I really did like the way Heart did my hair when I first started going to her, and I absolutely dread having to find a new stylist, but I also don't want to hate my hair, so I won't be going back. I think part of the problem is that Heart is a workaholic. She works every single day and overbooks clients. There is always someone immediately before and after me, and I've had her do someone else's hair while my color is processing. I went in for a simple haircut (no blowdry) and got an appointment with Heart. I was stuck with an overgrown asymmetrical bob that was getting messy. Heart brushed through my hair and pointed out why the hair bent outwards strangely and listened to the fact that I didn't want to take away length and just wanted some layers. After reiterating what I wanted, she got to work and was checking my hair throughout the process, which gave me confidence. After she finished, she gave me back the mirror to check the back of my head and ruffled my hair to show me the nice movement that the layers added.
