When it comes to a personal treat, hair is definitely at the top of most women's list. So why not "treat yo' self" at Maude. As long as you do not take away my appointment.
I had not found a good hair dresser since I moved away from NC (and I had a great one there). The lady that did my hair in NC used Paul Mitchel color on my hair and she suggested that I find a salon that uses the same color...so I ended up going to the Paul Mitchel School at Tysons Corner. The first time was just okay, but I couldn't beat the price. The second time was slightly more disturbing, but I let it slide, again in order to give my wallet a break, and then the third time was a disaster. And when I say disaster, I mean disaster! They were supposed to touch up my roots and they made my roots orange. No seriously, orange, which would have been fine, if I had orange hair, or were a clown. But my hair is a light brunette. I got mad, no furious and hysterical( I was going to a wedding in Iowa the next weekend), and they attempted to fix it, and that didn't work. Oh, but you better believe they made me pay for the original appointment and when they tried to fix it. So that place scarred me and I will never go back, I am even afraid to go to Tysons, but that is a whole different Yelp, and don't worry, I will rip them a new one. Okay, back to Maude. I had met an acquaintance at a friends party a few months back who says she works at a salon and is starting to learn about hair. She said she would be thrilled to cut my hair and so I was able to get in touch with her the day of the disaster. She told me she could fix it before the wedding in 5 days and so I came in the next day (on a Sunday). Here is where the love affair began.
This place takes a little bit to get to (28 minutes from my old place in Fairfax) and now 45 minutes from DC (yes I still go all the way out there for my hair).
BUT IT IS WORTH IT!
As soon as exit your car your nose is attacked by the delicious Great Harvest Bread Co. a few stores down...so you must hold back the urge to go there before your hair appointment.
The first time I ever stepped foot inside of Maude, I immediately felt at home. The place is so eclectic and painted/decorated so funky. I LOVE IT. I have the same taste in decorations and I just feel at home. Some of the walls are a dark, sexy purple and the ceiling is black. So cool.
You check in at the always inviting front desk girl, and she asks you if you want anything to drink. Now, she doesn't just mean water, she means soda or wine. I am starting to really love this place. Any place that offers me wine within two minutes of being there is already at the top of my list. So I cordially agree to some red. She brings me a BAP (big ass pour), and I am immediately greeted by my person.
Ever since my first visit, I have not gone ANY WHERE else for my hair. I have had several stylist at Maude, just to try out new people. And I have never been disappointed with my hair. One time my shade turned out a touch darker than expected (I have very pourus hair), but after she blew it out and realized it was darker, she fixed it! All the girls that have done my hair have been so sweet, talkative, caring, attentive and well, just good. I have been using Val for my past 5 visits (at least, I am kind of loosing count), and I will continue to see her.
Ladies, let's be honest, our hair takes a long time. Especially if you are getting color/touched up, cut AND blown out. So if you are at a place for that long you want to enjoy it. And I always feel like it is a mini vacation when I go in there. There are tons of things on the walls to look at, the magazines are endless and with so much variety. But my favorite thing to look at are the collection of magnets all over the place. They are on the beams in the middle of the salon, and out front for sale. They are hilarious and I have bought a few. Now, if you are squeamish with curse words, then don't read them, but if you love profanity as much as I do, then you will most likely laugh out loud (literally) a couple times...and don't worry, no one judges you at Maude.
My hair always makes me happy. They even make you walk around to different parts of the salon for the change of light, and if you are not happy, they will fix it.
Speaking of fixing hair. Rachel fixed my hair that first time I went..you know, when Paul Mitchell colored my hair orange? Yeah, that time. Rachel fixed it and I went to the wedding with a new fun color and no tears in my eyes. And don't worry, I went to Great Harvest Bread Co. after my appointment.
Definitely go here, it may be out of the way, but it is worth it. Oh! I almost forgot about the pricing! You will NOT find a salon this nice for the prices you will pay. They are VERY VERY VERY reasonable and going to the hair salon will NOT put a huge dent in your wallet. You can go to some wineries while you are out there...that is what I do. read more
