I feel like all moving reviews are either 1 or 5 stars. I want to give an accurate review of our experience with Matt's Moving, both the good and the bad. I also waited until a few weeks after the move to write this, to let the stresses of the moment chill and also get all our stuff unpacked to see what condition everything is in. The Good: They showed up on time, on the day scheduled, and moved us out of a pretty big house (3 stories plus attic) and into another pretty big house. The team that showed up had a good understanding beforehand of the size of the job, including what would be ready to go and what they would need to be boxing up. The guys on the crew were all good people, and mostly hard workers. Crucially, they took care with our stuff both in load-out and load-in. Only one item was broken (turntable) and it was a relatively minor fix. They didn't scuff walls or floors in either house. The crew leader was clear and communicative with me throughout the day. The Bad: Despite me being very clear with the inventory -- going through everything on two separate calls -- they drastically underestimated the amount of time the move would take. And therefore drastically underestimated how much it would cost. I don't want to guess as to whether this is part of their business practices or not, as the end result is the same: it cost nearly twice as much as the estimate. Now, they are a moving business. They should be able to accurately scope a job for a house that is pretty standard in size and furnishings. There's a certain margin of difference we would have found acceptable or explainable...and they far exceeded it. In Summation: They didn't break our stuff, were nice people, and got the job done. FAIR WARNING, FAIR WARNING, FAIR WARNING!! If you're thinking about using Matt's Moving because of the good reviews on Yelp or Reddit .....don't be deceived like I was. I booked a simple move for a one-bedroom apartment less than two miles away. I was quoted $521.47 for a two-hour move after providing a detailed inventory list. Per their own assessment, two movers would be more than enough. I even moved the majority of my belongings myself days before the move so that only a bed, mattress, TV console, sofa, chair, stools, and 9 boxes remained. I reserved elevators, parking spots, and backdoor access at both locations to make it as smooth as possible. I even warned them about the location of my new place having a one way street and precise move in protocols..... What happened? The movers dragged the job out to almost six hours, despite the minimal workload and preparations. They even complained about disassembling a queen-sized bed, which was clearly listed in my inventory and factored into my quote. Matt's Moving also requires a $500 upfront charge for a two-hour move and then turns around and upcharges you as the movers take their sweet time. My final bill came to an outrageous $1,090.34 for a move that should've taken no more than 2-4 hours. After filing a formal complaint and providing proof of my preparations and past moving experiences with other reputable companies (Two Men and a Truck moved a bigger inventory with similar logistics in less time for less money), I was refunded a measly $46. Fair warning to everyone.....please please please do not fall for the good reviews like I did. I am deeply hurt and disappointed by this service. I called Matt's on a Monday morning to see if they could move me the same day. I was in a sort of emergency situation, the move was very last minute, and timing was everything. Three of the best guys showed up, literally felt like they were saving my life. They stopped at my house to load my furniture, grill, etc., stopped at my storage unit to pick up all of other belongings; then hauled everything to my new home where they unloaded and put everything into place in each room. I was quoted 6 hours; they got it completed in 3.5 hours! These guys were super personable, extremely kind and caring; and fast and efficient as well. Moving is a stressful process. When we booked, we were very transparent about the arrival time window start due to another inflexible conflict we had. Day of, we were called 4 times (twice by the movers and twice by dispatch) prior to the start of our arrival window stating the movers were on route. I had to explain the situation and what had already been specified 4 times over. We felt very pushed from the start. Our move began with some frustration based on communication between the movers and their expectations, their dispatch and what we had been very transparent about. While the movers were fast, it was clear they were tired and trying to finish quickly. They missed 25% of the contents in our garage, of which we had to move to ourselves. Furthermore, there is a dime size dent through the paint/drywall in our hallway which is also quite noticeable. We have used other local movers in the Twin Cities. If you're looking to hire a moving company I would not choose Matt's moving company again. The office staff you deal with aside from being unprofessional, likely will underbid your contract significantly, then try to slyly charge your account for even more than that. I was quoted somwhere between 2 to 3 hours and charged $519. After that the final total was nearly $1,500. I disputed this as the three movers not only worked at the speed of completing the move in about 6 hours and I even did a considerable amount of moving, they left four SUV loads of smaller items I had to move myself. They offered to remove roughly $200, yet we had not agreed to terms. Additionally, despite disputing their total bill and not reaching terms, they after business hours charged my card on file an additional $1,100 for a total of over $1,600 despite offering me a buy out for a total of $1,100. They ended up charging me I believe that is over 300% more than the bid. It did not matter that we did not reach terms, they tried to see if the card would accept their overcharge of an additional $1,100 on top of the $519 they already had been paid. I lived by myself in a single family home utilzing one bedroom, an office, living room, dining room, and kitchen. They drastically underbid you to get you to hire them, then come back with an absorbent total. When I first called in the person I called had a full voicemail so you couldn't even leave a message, and the manager although I had no problem arguing with him, was condescending and rude truthfully. My experience with this company-as the first moving company I have ever hired, really couldn't be much worse. Proceed with them at your own peril. At first our experience with Matt's seemed like a great one. We got a very low bid for our move. They never asked to come and estimate content but we purchased by the hour and workman. We went with them right away. A few days before our move we received a call from Matt to nail down everything about the move .. all of a sudden he said he doubted that the truck would have enough room to complete our move. Then he said we needed to add another person and more hours to the move. It was way too late to try and schedule another moving company. They are the professionals .., they already know how difficult it can be to estimate a move and they should have come out to do a bid. I had also already paid a down payment too. I was considering 2 different companies for my move in January of 2025. One based in the city I was moving from (Minneapolis - Matt's Moving Co.) and the other from the city I was moving to. I reached out to the company in my new city and they gave me a vague quote and that was the end of their interest in my business. Then I filled out an online quote request on Matt's Moving website and in what seemed like just a few minutes, Loni from Matt's was calling me! After talking for a few minutes about my move date and needs we started to plan. Loni couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. I received an end of year deal where they provided 20 moving boxes for free! When I went to pick up these free boxes and purchased some packing paper and tape, these items were carried out to my car for me. Without those boxes I wouldn't have been nearly as prepared or organized. I packed and organized for weeks and felt like I was in pretty good shape. A few friends were there on move day to keep me sane. The movers were scheduled to arrive at 9:00 am and you could have set clocks by them as they rang my doorbell at exactly at 9 AM! What I was not prepared for was how nice, careful, fast and did I say NICE they were? My crew consisted of Ben, Riley and Nick. They started IMMEDIATELY and were so fast, I began to worry if I was prepared enough. With the help of my wonderful friends we were able to get everything that needed to go in the moving truck so they could get on the road. At the pace they were going I was pretty sure after cleaning up the old place, I would not get to the new apartment before they were done unpacking my life. I tipped them and gave them money for lunch before they hit the road and they were done and headed back to Minneapolis before I was halfway to my new apartment/city! During the course of the move-in a light fixture the apartment building hallway was accidentally broken. Matt's paid for it so fast, I think it surprised the management company! Sherri, with Matt's helped me through that process and was another reason why I'm so glad I made the decision to go with Matt's Moving Company. Matt's Movers were hire to emptied a house and garage to a dumpster. the crew of three arrived on time. This company had been used four times recently by family members and recommended. I found them to be lazy and unwilling to try to make room in the dumpster. They were hired for two hours left in approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. We were left to complete the garage. A list of issues: -Poor communication by movers. We took a day off because movers were to arrive at a certain time window, they arrived 5 hours late and in the evening. -Items were broken, were not covered. we have thrown out 4 pieces of furniture due to damage so far and we are still unpacking. -Antique hand carved door damaged, minimal compensation and long scratch/dent in door still exists. -Movers threw cigarettes in our yard we needed to clean up. -Estimate was for two trucks, they baited and switched stating we needed three on packing days we refused a third truck as it would have increased our expenses by about $5000, they left items behind despite two trucks. On arrival to new house, one truck was 1/3 empty and could have held everything. we ended up renting a U-Haul and had to scramble for the items they did not take. -We were charged close to $2000 over the estimated amount. -Team expects tip at the end. -Stories between staff did not match. Great experience overall. We just moved last week from Iowa to Minnesota and used Matts. When I reached out to them, they were extremely patient with me. I had so many questions for them considering the many scams I was reading about, and Micah was so obliging with his responses, how many ever times I reached out with questions. On the day, the crew arrived an hour late because of rain and traffic, so I don't blame them one bit. As soon as they stepped in, they got to work. They moved us perfectly within the estimated time. I was very disappointed with their service. The coordinator didn't listen to what I said I had to move. Because I was moving out of a studio, they assumed I had LESS items than I said I did. So the movers who showed up (who were very rude and lazy) were surprised when I had over 100 boxes, not 20 boxes like the coordinator said. The movers whined and complained the entire time and were super slow. Another person from the office contacted me after the movers showed up to say it's going to take longer because they "didn't know" I had so much stuff. The building I moved out of had lots of moving equipment (flat bed dollies, carts, etc) that I offered to the guys because they were hand carrying everything. They didn't want to use it - this was taking so much time and completely inefficient I decided to move half the items myself on the flat bed dollies. Finally after 4 hours of packing the truck, they got to my next residence and had to stair carry up 3 flights of stairs and whined and complained about that - even though they knew as I told the coordinator at the time of booking. They finally called another guy to come help - he was a delight and very quick and efficient. These are not professional movers and I couldn't believe how whiny and lazy they were. I regret using them. I know these are young guys (kids) but I've never experienced so much laziness and rudeness with movers in the past. BEWARE of Matt's Moving and get prepared to be scammed and ripped off if you use them. I would give this company ZERO stars if I could. I had a very short list of heavy items I couldn't move on my own in my car (3 mattresses/beds, dressers, two large chairs, a Peloton) I was quoted 2 hours. In fact, they even called me twice to confirm my list and asked if I was "sure I had so few items" because they have a 2 hour minimum and most people move more. I confirmed I only had a few heavy things I couldn't move myself and I would pay the 2 hour minimum and I only had to move them 6 miles. The salesman assured me it would only be 2 hours. HOWEVER, when I got to the bill, I was charged for 5 HOURS and over $1300. I have tried to dispute these bogus charges multiple times and they said they would only remove 1 hour and still plan to charge me DOUBLE what they quoted me. I have notified my bank for fraud. I am not one to leave reviews like this but after this nightmare of an experience I feel like I should warn others as peak moving season approaches. We were told furniture and large items would be wrapped with care, if you count wrapping an 86 inch TV in a blanket and then jamming into the truck "with care" then I don't know. None of the couches were wrapped or the bed frames/mattresses/dressers. We had damage to our brand new coffee table (gouges & scratches and it no longer closes properly), a dresser completely destroyed. The dresser was an item we told them was to stay during our initial walk through as we were leaving it at the house for the new homeowners, they moved it anyways and it was destroyed in the process. An irreplaceable light fixture was also broken. Here is the kicker... Our Air pods were stolen off the counter in the process and we were able to track them back to St. Paul outside one of the movers homes. They put them in our mailbox after we called and complained and they said they were found in the back of the moving truck... LIES!!! They were sitting on the kitchen counter and someone swiped them and put them in their pocket. They were simply trying to cover their a**. We offered to buy these guys lunch and everything, nice pay back. The movers charge in intervals of 15 minutes and towards the end of the move they were more interested in playing basketball in our driveway then anything else. Claims has been an absolute nightmare to deal with, the woman on the phone is very rude with almost every interaction and they claimed they submitted the photos with damage to the claims department and after following up with claims they say they have no photos on hand of any of the damages. Today Matt's Movers packed half a five bedroom house into a 26 foot truck, for us, including a baby grand piano, pool table, two granite tables and lots of antiques in a record four hours! Justin's crew (Justin, Justin, Jason, Dom, and Tony) were totally amazing. They exceeded our highest expectations for their ability to communicate, to use every inch of space in the truck, problem solve, preserve our sentimental possessions and work together. Poor communication. I've hired professional movers before and this experience was not nearly as smooth nor cost efficient. My first move was 150 miles longer yet the estimate was $3000 cheaper. I researched the cost of a move my size and distance and the estimate was in fact $3000 more expensive. Then once I returned I realized I had an item missing. Communication: poor I called up there twice and left a voicemail to set up a time for my move and was answered on the third day. When I called and left a voicemail about my missing item I received no response until I emailed. I decided to drive a uhaul rather than going with their company. My wife and I moved last month and Matt's Moving took the stress out of the whole thing. The estimate was fair and the staff was friendly & helpful while setting up the move. I booked Matt's Moving to move my kids. After to move I went over to see the new apartment and found their leather sofa torn in several places, a bed frame bent and damaged - I emailed Matt's immediately. They accused my kids of tearing the couch by moving it from the center of the room to the wall rather than admitting they damaged it by trying to force it through a door frame. I subsequently found that they had falsified their paperwork stating that they finished the move 1.25 hrs later than they actually did. After 3 weeks of dealing with the company, and a visit from Matt himself. We were told that we would receive a refund of the 1.25 hours and a "repair" of the damage to the couch. I would never use Matt's again and would recommend anyone using them document arrival and leave times as well as video the movers to document their work. It's a "he said she said" was their response to my emails after the move and my 16 phone calls to Matt's during my move. I begged them to pack and wrap my items which was what I paid for. I should have made them leave immediately when they walked in my house and said "there is nothing of any value here". They went on to treat my belongings as such. By far the most horrific experience in my life - I could never even imagine worse nightmare. Believe absolutely nothing they say or anything they claim on their website. Hired them for our move on 2/7/19. My reason for giving the date is that this was one of the biggest snow storms of the year and one of the coldest days of the year. We had hired a 4 man crew and they showed up with a 6 man crew since they knew the weather would slow them down. The extra two men were provided for free! The crew was clearly a mix of more senior and experienced customer facing employees and more junior guys just there for the sheer manpower. Our head guy said he had over 20 years of moving experience. They were all extremely professional and I was blown away by how effective they were. They had the more senior guys packing the wardrobe boxes and wrapping up the furniture while the other guys professionally loaded all the boxes. When we got to our new house they had some of the guys stationed indoors and some stationed outdoors. The indoor guys took off their shoes and ensured everything got to the appropriate room while making absolutely zero mess of the new house. At the end of the day I tipped these guys everything I had in my wallet and honestly wish I had more cash. They did an unbelievable job in very poor weather conditions and were super professional. Here's another update. I'm pretty sure Matt's lost one of my boxes. It had some invaluable art and a humidifier in there. I'm pretty bummed. I feel bad because the people at Matt's are really nice. If you want your storage unit to look like this, have an extremely unprofessional experience with no respect of your items AND to have to go back and spend two hours of your own time to fix what was done - DO NOT use Matt's Moving!! The website makes it look like this is a professional moving company, but they are not. I contacted them about moving a treadmill from the basement of my old house to the second floor of the new one, and told them exactly what model it was. They represented that they were able to do this job, and told me it would probably just cost the two hour minimum. On moving day, a comically large 26' rent a truck arrived. Not the Matt's Moving trucks you see on their website and also much larger than necessary. The movers told me they don't take apart treadmills. They didn't even have the manual. Remember I told them exactly which one it was two weeks ahead of time. To be fair, the movers did actually show me the paperwork. It said nothing but "just a treadmill." So I don't know how they were supposed to know how big it is. The other comments on here about management misrepresenting and then making no effort to communicate to their own employees are completely true. They eventually did spend five minutes taking it apart and got it up the stairs. At that point 90 minutes had already passed. No idea what they were doing the other 85 minutes. At the destination, they again milked the clock, making noises for twenty minutes but without one single bolt or screw turned.
