The chef is very talented. Not that food cart isn't full of talented chefs, but I feel this chef's talent goes beyond a food cart. I've ate at the food cart awhile back and really didn't think much. I ate at his restaurant pop-up at Lil' Dame and was impressed. His chicken skewers was amazing. The chef had a way of incorporating spices that don't overwhelm the other flavors and seasonings. The beef ribs and pork dishes were uniquely flavored and tender. The beef stew tasted like pho broth and the beef was dry and a bit tough - I took a star off for that. I wanted to try this place bc of pics of burgers and pandan donuts I saw from their food truck but when I went they were doing a pop up sort of thing inside Dame M-W evenings. The menu is very different now much more fancy. We tried the crepe, turmeric fish and grilled ribs. Everything was pretty good but didn't really taste that Vietnamese. The turmeric fish was on a bed of woven rice noodles and had a bit of fish sauce flavor but I couldn't taste any turmeric. And I honestly don't have much more to say about the other dishes. We found Matta on Instagram right around NYE and instantly wanted to try it. It looked good, and they had some fun collabs in the past. They have a super cute and rather large space to themselves (unless we missed other carts?). It was very fun, but it was a bit cold out to want to eat outside. We waited for a few minutes outside with no one acknowledging us. My husband had to wave to get their attention, but it wasn't a huge deal. We ordered the Grandma's special and the fried catfish. Grandma's special sounded good in theory, but I felt like it lacked a bit of flavor. I could taste some, but I just felt like it was missing something. And the fries were undercooked. First time back after a memorable first experience, this time for breakfast. I appreciate their simple two option menu. It confidently implies, "you'll like what we decided to make." They are creative for sure, their complex breakfast sandwich on a pandan bun is evidence of that. The bun is a bit dense, rather than light and airy. Conversely, the pandan donut is more of the latter (my preference), and it's served nice and warm. They offer traditional Vietnamese iced coffee, but also one infused with lime. I am so happy that MATTA moved closer to me. I love to take little walks here and just grab some pandan donuts. My family is hard to impress and they love their donuts. I need to come more often to try their savory options. I stopped in for one of their collabs and picked up their pandan donut with pandan coconut glaze and coconut ice cream. The ice cream was tasty. I think I much prefer their usual warm pandan donuts over the cold one with the ice cream sandwich, but nonetheless still delicious. I was also able to grab their watermelon mint lime slushee, which was very refreshing. I highly highly highly recommend their pandan donuts. I've tried their breakfast sando and I wasn't the hugest fan of it. It started off good, and the spices got more and more aggressive. I asked my friend who has had it before and she said her sando experience was that it was rather salty. My salt seemed to have been replaced with black pepper or something. It was a sharp mild spice. We walked up a little before 12 and there was no line. There were a few folks waiting for food on the nearby bench. One of the staff welcomed us and took our order of a catfish sandwich, a fried chicken sandwich, and fries. They asked for our name and said they would call our name when the food was ready. It also seemed like they would walk your food into the neighboring beer space. We waited about 10 minutes and picked up the food from the window. The food was tasty! I really enjoyed the fried catfish with the toppings and condiments. I didn't really taste pandan from the bun, but the texture was great! I had a bite of my friends fried chicken sandwich. It was good and they used dark mean. My only qualm was that there parts of the chicken that were tough. I pulled out a big piece of chicken from the sandwich because I couldn't fully hit through it. However, it was well-marinated! The fries were also pretty standard. Their ketchup reminded me of the ketchup served with currywurst, which I loved. The food truck is located near a cute workshop area that you can explore as you're waiting for your food to be ready if you're like me and always forget to order ahead. The food truck isn't located near other shops so I would recommend calling in ahead as it's pretty residential outside of the workshop. Staff is following guidelines and with another group in front of us it was ~15-20 minute wait. | WHAT WE GOT | + Fried Catfish - The catfish isn't cut like your typical fish & chips so it's a bit fattier and thick cut which is great when you're pairing with white rice. The fish was fried but was also nice and light. The pairing with the side slaw salad and chili lime sauce to dip the fish in was super refreshing and balanced out the fried flavor. + Pandan Donut - Made fresh and these are so yummy! I enjoy my donuts light but also with a cake like chew. These are a tad oily but when do you see pandan donuts!? People may be surprised to see it green but it has a nice infusion of the flavor without being overpowering. The glaze is also the right amount of sweetness and a nice thin layer so it's not overpowering the dough. They pair it with some fresh coconut flakes -- what's not to love!? Be sure to get one to go with your order. + Thit Kho (The Classic) - Nice and fishy (in a good way!). The dish comes with super thick cuts of pork belly with plentttty of fat. You may be wondering if it's worth it, but the fat helps balance out the saltiness of the fish sauce. Add some rice to your spoon and you got yourself a bite. All items in teh fish balance out each other well. If you do take sips of the broth it is a bit salty but that's expected but just a heads up! It was a tough call between the Da Lat (fried chicken) and the catfish so will need to go back to try it. Sad to see there were no more Vietnamese crepes on the most recent menu as I saw it in photos from the past and was excited to try. I've been wanting to try this cart for a while after following their IG posts featuring lots of yummy photos. I tried the pork chop. It was a bit on the dry side, but the chimi sauce was so bright and refreshing, it helped with the dryness. I like how it was cut like a paw with fingers to make it easier to cut and eat. The accompanying salad is flavorful and refreshing. The pandan donuts were by far my favorite part of the meal! They have a hint more chew (In the best possible way) compared to regular donuts, and the donut was so soft and tender! The pandan and coconut flavor is perfect! If I lived in Portland, I'd be here all the time. With a constantly rotating brunch menu plus their usual dinner menu, Matta is always slinging the good stuff. Came on a Sunday and tried... Everything. That day, there was the breakfast bowl which was amazing-- I wish I could put that gravy on everything! The special omelette with tomatoes and shrimp was also so, so good with the eggs perfectly silky. And of course, the pandan donuts were :chefs-kiss:. I usually don't like to have a sweet drink with sweet food, but the ca phe somehow pairs perfectly with the donuts and the savory options! Logistics wise, there's lots of street parking. I was visiting out of town and heard the rave about food carts in Portland and this one stood out most to me based on reviews about their fried chicken sando and the fact they serve it on Pandan buns. I came last Friday during the heatwave and unfortunately they were all sold out on the fried chicken sando. The cashier was very helpful and walked me through the menu and suggested that the Nem nuong was more traditional. The other customers were getting the fish sando which the cashier referred to as a fancy version of fillet o fish. The pandan bun was sweet and buttery and that was good. The pork patty itself could use a bit more seasoning but was juicy. The sauce was sorta like a spicy ketchup. It was a tad bit pricey after tips, and I wasn't too full. What to say about this place. Vietnamese cuisine, family recipes. The fusion and modern interpretation executed in a delightful and refreshing fashion? Ordered the braised lamb curry with pappardelle noodles from Gumba (neighbor food cart). Broth was complex, great flavors. Not too sweet or salty, well balanced and a smooth richness. The noodles were incredible. Chewy al dente that matched perfectly with the broth. Each bite coated with curry broth, tender meat, fried shallot, fried garlic and mint chimichurri. This flavor bomb was intense. This easily rivals any noodle soup dish in town. Ha VL, khao soi at Pok PoK, your favorite Ramen spot. It's on that level of execution, creativity, freshness and taste. Can't wait to try more It's not a place that will serve spicy mayo and pork belly banh mi or pho burritos and other fad type food. I came by on a Sunday for brunch with my girlfriend while we were in town, as a bunch of friends recommended this cart. I'm a huge fan of the type of food that they're doing here - a very unique "Viet Kieu" experience. We ordered the Breakfast Bowl with the beef patty and a pandan donut for dessert. There wasn't a huge line to order when we came, but we did have to wait 25 mins for our food, which I found to be a little too long. The bowl was extremely savory, and it doesn't look like a lot, but it sure does fill you up. The breakfast patty was dense and extremely flavorful, though very slightly overcooked for my preference. Hiding beneath the patty, there was this curry-spiced hashbrown, which provided a slightly crunchy texture to each bite that I enjoyed. The sunny-side up egg was cooked perfectly, and it was fun to break the yolk and watch it ooze onto the bed of jasmine rice below. The fish sauce gravy was lighter than your traditional gravy, which I found to be nice given how heavy the dish already was. When you combine all of these components together into a single bite, you get a unique and delicious flavor bomb that I doubt you can get anywhere else. The pandan donut resembled a Krispy Kreme glazed donut aesthetically, though obviously green from the pandan. However, this donut was MUCH lighter than a Krispy Kreme glazed. I would've liked a little more pandan flavor in the donut, but it was delicious regardless. I probably could've eaten half a dozen myself. Pricing is reasonable given the amount of food that you get. And the staff all seem really nice, especially the cashier. There's only outdoor dining here, as there's 2 long wooden tables that serve the patrons for all of the food carts in this pod. There are some parts of the tables that're covered by umbrellas to shield you from the heat, but I didn't mind getting some sun while eating. There's tons of street parking around that's free - we didn't have any trouble when we came. If I remember correctly, there's a 2-hour parking time limit, but not sure how enforced that is. A must go! First of all, the absolute nicest folks to run a food truck. Really friendly, open and awesome vibes. Secondly and just as importantly, the food is top notch! If new school traditional food is a thing, then they are that. It feels simultaneously new and familiar. Ordered: Fried chicken plate: a smoother crispy skin that reminds me so much of the Asian fried chicken I grew up with. Balanced with a fresh zesty salad that packs heat and a heaping of fried garlic crunch. Grandmas special was particularly awesome. The fries are seasoned perfectly and the bed of white rice soaks up all that sauce. If I had to knock anything, I'd prefer the beef a tad less well done, but great nonetheless. Soda Chan: this pairs so well with the plates. Not too sweet, just refreshing lime and mint with that carbonated bite. Easily a top tier contender among PDX food trucks. Super solid Viet food! And I say this as a Viet Kieu, the person for whom this food is apparently intended. Ordered via phone at around 1pm for a pick up at 3:45pm (since they close at 4pm). We decided to try the Thit Kho and the Da Lat. We arrived a little early and our food was being made, so super fresh pick up which is always nice. It took us about 20 minutes to drive home and the fried chicken was still crispy and the pork was still hot. So breaking it down: Da Lat is a fried chicken leg and thigh as one big piece. It's moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. The meat wasn't super well seasoned, so it tasted a little bland on its own, but was *great* with the chili fish sauce and the bomb diggity herb and green salad. I polished this off with only a little help from my partner. The Thit Kho is a classic Viet dish of braised pork. They improved it with a jammy egg (think ramen style) and perfeeeeect broth/meat sauce. Very comforting and filling dinner. More than we could eat! Solid spot with two amazing people just trying to serve some delicious authentic food. I'm always happy to support small business and Matta is no exception. With a rotating menu every day, you're going to have a new favorite every time you come. When I stopped by, I had the fried catfish paired with a salad and some rice, which reminded me of home. Btw, the rice is perfectly made here. I know sometimes food trucks get away with some dry weak ass rice but this for was like being at home and having my mom's rice that I'm still trying to figure out how to perfect to this day. I was so impressed with how good the catfish was. Nicely fried but still moist and soft on the inside. I'm pretty sure this dish will be pretty highly requested. And if you're hesitant about catfish, this is the dish you don't want to miss out on. For those of you that are familiar, don't be shy with the fish sauce cause it's bomb with it. The second dish was a shrimp omelette and this was pretty much like comfort food. Can't go wrong with rice, shrimp, eggs, with a variety of flavors added in such as garlic, cilantro, and green onions. Wash it down with the warm soup on a rainy day and you're golden. Best part about this food is it fills you up but you don't feel like you ate a bunch of oily food. For 12 bucks for each dish, it's pretty worth it imo. Don't forget to check out the pandan donuts. It's a subtle flavor with just enough sweetness but not enough make you feel like you just developed type 2 diabetes. I didn't get to take a pic since it was sold out when we were there but we got to try a few of the donut holes which were dank. Matta states to give us a Việt Kiều (Vietnamese person living outside of Vietnam) and the cooking and dishes definitely fits with motto. I got the Vietnamese Fried Chicken. VFC includes leg and thigh fried, coconut milk mashers with nuoc cham gravy, thai chili coleslaw, and a pandan bun. Fried chicken was perfect with crispiness on the outside and juiciness on the inside. The coconut milk mashers was a remix of mashed potatoes mashed with coconut milk topped with nuoc cham gravy and fried garlic. The Thai chili coleslaw was creamy and refreshing with crispy fried shallots. This details of this dish: coconut milk, nuoc mam, fried garlic, fried shallots, and unforgettable Vietnamese flavor took me back to the motherland but the fusion reminded me that it's a Việt Kiều experience. You know it's real when my momma took a bite of my meal and complimented on how delicious the food was. I also got the soda chanh (mint lime soda), which was super refreshing with my meal. Okay. Best burger I've had in Portland yet. After trying 7 other places, this nailed it for me and fulfilled my juicy delicious dreams of biting into a burger. It's a brunch burger, but beautifully done. First you have a choice between pork and beef, I personally tried the beef but my friends loved their pork as well. The buns have a nice sweetness to it but fluffy insides just as you'd want it. The egg, oh the egg. With its yolk in every bite, but that's not the magic. They fry the sides so you have this wonderful crisp whenever you bite. Yes please. The patty itself is a nice thick juiciness that satisfies your needs. It's hard to take a picture when you don't want to put it down let alone take time to when you feast your eyes on it. It's a must try. Come early so things don't run out. Holy $@*%! After weeks of drooling over their Instagram, we finally gave this place a try and we should have come sooner, why didn't we come sooner? We had the giant ribs, or rather I had a couple of bites before my seven year old devoured them. They were perfectly spicy and savory, delicious. The fried chicken is perfection! The batter is light and salty, and the portion is huge. They sometimes do a KFC style special and I can't wait to eat a bucket of this chicken. We moved on to the pandan donut. Wow. It was so good. It looked small and I thought for sure it would be dense but it was so light and airy. Omg. It was fluffy perfection. Be sure to get one, or two, or three, no judgement. It was hot out so we also grabbed a fruit cocktail and my seven year old lit up with delight after her first sip. It's coconutty and sweet with jelly and exotic fruit. TLDR; Absolutely loved EVERYTHING we ordered here! What we ordered: Fish sando: my pick, SO GOOD. I was a little hesitant about the cheese but all the flavors worked SO well together. The pandan bun was a fun experience, but I don't think I tasted the pandan flavors simply bc the flavors of the catfish and veggies took center stage -- this however was not a bad thing at all. Despite not being able to taste the specialty flavor of the bun, this absolutely did not take away from how FLUFFY the bun was!! SO. GOOD. (This is the bun they use on their burgers as well). The fish was PERFECTLY fried and paired so well with everything in the sando. Cheeseburg: husband's pick, also very good! The burger has nuoc mam (fish sauce) in it, but unlike typical Viet food, the nuoc mam was a nice compliment rather than the main character. The "dac biet sauce" (special sauce), was truly dac biet and complimented the burger so well. Fries: sunnuvabitch these fries were bomb af. JUST enough seasoning, crispy enough on the outside to give the *perfect* bite with a pillowy softness on the inside. An order of fries comes with spicy ketchup as the dipping sauce. Friends, let me start with saying that I refuse to eat traditional ketchup. REFUSE. But at first glance, this sauce had the texture and color of a marinara dipping sauce. And because it was labeled as spicy, I decided to give it a try. Let me tell ya, it was pretty darn good. Enough for me to want to keep dipping every few times. To be honest, the seasoning on the fries was already perfect and I felt like that alone was already perfect on the fries. But the spicy ketchup sauce was almost a nice was to cleanse off the inevitable accumulation of saltiness in your mouth because of how addicting the fries are. If you've ever had the Red Robin seasoning, it was somewhat remiscent of those flavors but not as salty and much more elevated. Pandan donuts W/ 5 spice cinnamon topping: a nice take on a cinnamon sugar donut. The 5 spice wasn't overwhelming at all and blended well with the cinnamon. Would highly recommend if you like sugar donuts W/ coconut glaze: this was definitely the winner for us. Something about this donut was kind of like a Krispy Kreme donut except the differences are exactly what I wanted changed in a KK donut: it's a little bigger and fluffier and the coconut glaze is a lot less sweeter than the glaze on a KK donut. Unlike the bun, you can actually taste the pandan flavor in the donut! Matta was somehow a no frills food truck while at the same time serving AWESOME food. So when we were offered a babysitter from my MIL, I knew EXACTLY where I wanted to go. One glance at The Classic and they had me at coconut, chili, caramel broth. It was 100 percent worth the hype my friends. I still dream about this meal. Washed it down with a mint lime soda and damn it was refreshing. Hubs got Grandma's Special, and I almost suffered a stabbing by fork from my husband trying to steal a bite. We finished our meal with pandan donuts, and trust me, you'll want to get these. There are two things that stand out to me about Matta: 1. They make delicious food and enjoy doing it. I have seen snippets of their upcoming documentary (!) where Richard Van Le talks about his experiences growing up, and the motivation around wanting to create Matta. 2. Outside of Matta the restaurant, it's been really cool to see this growing group of food proprietors showing support for one another. They are constantly hyping up neighboring food cart Baon Kainan, or hosting a b-boy competition with Deadstock coffee, or highlighting another restaurant to try. They are not only making food but they are fostering community amongst independent restaurants, and I am here for it. read more

Wonderful wonderful service but I can't give it 5 stars because the donuts were so disappointing! They were incredibly greasy, and the dough lacked a lot of flavor. We got the pandan and the five spice donuts and despite the appealing exterior, there was a lot missing in the flavor department. read more

Matta is so good that we went back three times on our 3-day trip to Portland. There was just not better place to get such delicious foods for that price point. The pandan doughnuts are a must. These are the best dougnuts we've ever had -- far surpassing Voodoo, Blue Star, and Pips! The flavor is jam packed and the texture is chewy and dense. If you're lucky, they've have Che Thai available and it'll be the perfect dessert combination to any meal. read more

It's a mix of vietnamese flavors and american comfort food and it works pretty well. We got the fish and chips and the fried chicken sandwich, with both being battered quite well. The fish and chip portion is super generous. Some of the sauces on the chicken sando are a little too runny though and it makes for kind of a comically messy experience. I'm not sure how much of the viet concept is really coming through but everything basically works. There's a coffee shop nearby where you can go wash your hands though (after you buy something of course!). read more

Dropped by a little past 12PM here on a Wednesday. Was immediately able to place my order on the counter but noticed a lot of people waiting for their food. It took a while for our order to be prepared, around 20 minutes or so. Understandable, since it's lunch hour and some people might have placed orders in advance online. I knew about their online system, however since it was our first time trying their food, we wanted to try ordering on location. We got the Nem Nuong Burger which was flavorful and juicy but a little salty. Also ordered the Chicken Sando which was peanut-y and a little sweet. Both were served with pandan bread and shredded salad with vinegar. We think the Chicken Sando was the best of the two. Got one side order of fries that came with spicy curry-like ketchup, which were enough for two, and an order of their house drink which was like this fizzy sprite-like drink with maybe lime and tasted herby, i think. It was an okay drink. Overall, I think I would come back and try their dinner offerings next time. Maybe we'll skip the drinks. Looking forward to try the pandan donuts next time too! read more
