Matsuya Korean House - Egg Sandwich
    Mike H.

Imagine, this spot is actually an HK cafe despite the Japanese name and Korean house title! I'd been meaning to visit since hearing about it a few years back and finally had the chance to today. There was a bit of wait at the weekend lunch rush. The menu is slightly more expensive for standard HK cafe fare. We had the Satay Beef & Vermicelli in Soup that was savory with Egg Sandwich that was a bit bland. We also had a larger bowl of Preserved Vegetable & Pork w/ Vermicelli Soup & Egg. The lunch specials came with milk tea that was well-steeped. Our hunger was satisfied after a day at the park nearby. The interior showed some of its age. They seem to be one of the go-to HK cafe in the neighborhood judging by the packed crowd. They have to work on the name though to make it more obvious!

This one has an identity crisis. A Cantonese restaurant with a distinctly Japanese sounding name and "Korean House" in the title. Regardless, of its name, this is definitely a HK Cafe with the usual staples. I've mostly come here for breakfast. They have amazing prices for a generous amount of food. For around $10 you can get a bowl of noodles that also comes with a side of eggs, protein, and buttered bread. That's a steal. When I ordered the Sausage & Egg noodles on their own, it came with 3 whole hot dogs. I think the "Korean House" part of the name is referring to a couple of fusion items they have for dinner. I personally haven't tried these dishes but they look good on the menu. Service is quick and efficient, though pretty hands-off like most HK Cafes.

Been here a few times in the past as there aren't many Chinese cafe or restaurants around this area. I came here with a friend on a weekday for lunch. There was plenty of parking available as it's located in a pretty big plaza. The restaurant was a bit busy, I guess it was because it was around lunch time. We ordered the lunch special. I got the baked Portuguese chicken with rice and my friend ordered stir fried beef noodles. The prices are about the same compared to other chinese restaurants in the area $13/$14 however the portion was huge and it also comes with a hot drink. Overall, I like this cafe and will be returning again.

Unlike its name, nothing related to Korean food at all. It's a typical HK style cafe located in Markham East. Food was okay. Aside from good servers, not too impressive as it is just very ordinary. Pricing is average, and speed is not particularly quick neither. In other words, the positioning is not clear with no specialty whatsoever. Honestly, I would say there are lots of other choices with more tasty selections in Markham.

Grilled Pork Chop in Soup w/ Korean Instant Noodles ($9.99)

Definitely interesting to see korean fusion HK style cafe. We came for breakfast and the restaurant was surprisingly full, but I guess there's not much selection in this area.  Food wise, I'm not sure I personally like this combination. I ordered the Satay Beef noodles, and although this is usually one of my favourites, it didn't seem to work well with the korean style instant noodles. I also found it very expensive, almost $10 for a couple pieces of beef (maybe 5 pcs all together?) and a pack of instant noodles. The pork chop was better and felt much more satisfying for basically the same price but is still just average.  As a redeeming factor, their milk tea was good.  I've heard some good things about this place, so I'd love to go back and try dinner or lunch instead as those meals usually require more cooking and are less instant.

Pretty decent HK Cafe. Came here after a long day at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Pretty tasty house soup, Portuguese Baked Chicken meal & HK tea! My mom had the fish skin wonton soup and said it was good!

It really pains me to give this updated review. We've been fans for a long time, but the last "three" visits (yes, we still gave them the benefit of the doubt), were below average at best. The Pork Chop with Onion Gravy and Egg on Rice is our favorite dish, but the pork chop was red and not cooked thoroughly. No apology, they just re-fried it. The egg, which is always too raw with runny watery whites, overcooked yolk, or burnt, is a huge disappointment. Unfortunately, it's time to try some other HK cafes, but I do hope they improve for other customers.

On October 13th, I went to this restaurant for lunch. I was first in line for a table for three. The staff asked if we would sit at the bar, but I said no, so we waited. After around 15 minutes, I noticed a four-person table about to settle the bill, and I figured it would be our turn next. Since we were in a rush, I politely asked staff member A if we could place our order in advance to save time. Staff member A went to check for us. However, a short-haired woman at the drink station suddenly yelled at us, pointing at the bar seats, saying, "If you're in a rush, sit at the bar! Otherwise, you wait!" Her tone was as if she was scolding a dog. I was furious and asked staff member A why she was treating a customer like that. I had simply asked if we could place an order early. If it wasn't possible, they could've just said no politely. Staff member A apologized, but the damage was already done. Coincidentally, the four-person table became available, and we were seated. Since we were pressed for time, we ate quickly and prepared to leave. I planned to ask for the short-haired woman's name to file a complaint with the owner, but despite asking several times, all the staff covered for her and refused to tell me. To the owner of this restaurant, I'd like to ask: Is this how your staff treats customers? Yelling at us like we're dogs? I was speaking politely, yet she shouted at me like that. This is truly horrible service! I hope you take this seriously, but either way, I'll never return to a restaurant that treats customers this way. Anyone who doesn't want to be treated like a dog should avoid this place! With the current challenges in the restaurant industry, hiring staff like this will only make things worse. I wouldn't be surprised if this place shuts down soon!

    P. Korean instant noodles (luncheon meat, sausage, ham, egg and fish cake)

We arrived just before 11 am. There's breakfast until 11 am and then it switches over to the lunch menu. When asked the waitress provided both the breakfast and lunch menus for us to look through. We ordered the Korean Instant Noodles (with luncheon meat, sausage, ham, egg and fish cake but we got a cubed shaped piece of tofu) and Grilled Chicken Steak & Eggs with Teriyaki Sauce and Sweet Bun from the breakfast menu. The complimentary drinks were the first to arrive and then the sweet bun that comes with the grilled chicken steak. These two dishes didn't take long to arrive. Everyone at the table had received their dishes and were well into eating them but the braised beef brisket with noodles was taking quite some time. We had to follow up to make sure that it wasn't missed. We asked for mild spice for the instant noodles but they must've just left the spice out all together. I was pretty surprised at all the ingredients that came with the noodles. Most places only provide a couple of ingredients along with the noodles. The teriyaki sauce that came with the grilled chicken steak was very tasty. The dish also had some mixed veggies on the side. We managed to finish both breakfast dishes but those that ordered off the lunch menu had to get takeout boxes to pack up the rest of their meal since there was just so much. All in all it was a good meal with decent portion sizes and reasonable prices.

Very nice waitresses. Clean places with many tables. A little bit noisy. The food was good. The ramen pork broth was a little watery though. It felt as if we were in Korea !

Spaghetti and meat sauce/Pork Chop tomato sauce ($13)

One of my go-to Hong Kong cafes. I came for a late lunch on a Saturday. Their lunch menu goes until 3pm and has an extensive menu of rice and spaghetti dishes. I ordered the Spaghetti and Meat Sauce and Pork Chop and Tomato Sauce on Rice ($13). They fused 2 dishes together so you can get the best of both worlds. The lunch dishes are pretty big too, so it's definitely worth the price. All lunch meals come with a soup and a drink. My go-to drink is the Cold Lemon Tea ($+1 extra charge). Service is always great. The staff are super friendly and fast too. I would highly recommend this cafe for quality food and good prices!

    Sizzling Hot Plate Sirloin Steak
    Ivy L.

Compared to my recent sizzling hot plate steak reviews, this one gets passing marks in the degree of doneness. This time I asked for 3 out of 10 in anticipation of it being prepared a certain way and when cut into, it was delightfully pink and more on the rare side as I enjoy anyway. HOWEVER, at what cost? The cost being the garlic sauce was all but flavourless with only the raw taste of garlic and the steak on its own was otherwise bland and unseasoned. But hey at least it was cooked how I liked it this time right?

Although there is a lot of parking in this plaza, there are times when there is hardly any available spots. Service is quick and efficient every time I've gone. The menu is HK-style café with a wide range of options, so there's something for everyone. I've tried quite a bit from their menu over time, and nothing has been disappointing. One thing I appreciate is that they don't over-season their food, especially with salt. Most of their meals come with drinks and a choice of soup and they have CREAM SOUP! It's much rarer to find a place that still offers it nowadays. Drinks are also better than average compared to the surrounding hk styled cafes in this plaza. I'd come back because it's reliable and easy to enjoy, especially with a small group of people!

This restaurant serves up some delicous HK diner favourites and most dishes come with soup and hot drink. My first visit I tried the viral sizzling sirloin steak with fries and black pepper gravy. It was $29.99 when I tried it. I believe the prices have gone up slightly. I also got a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Perfect meal for me. My wife got the baked curry beef brisket. The dish was good but mostly rice and not enough beef brisket. Our second we tried the fried chicken leg with fried egg and choice of gravy. The chicken had a nice chinese breading and I believe some salted egg yolk as well. The chicken was crispy and juicy inside. We definitely marked this dish as a must have when we come back. Our 3rd visit we tried the baked cream chicken with rice. This dish was underwhelming and didn't have enough chicken. The cream sauce was tasty but we felt it was more of a frozen dinner variety. I ordered the fried grouper fish with garlic gravy. The fish was crispy and really nice breading. The dish needed some veggies for garnish but I understand they are trying to keep the prices affordable. If you are looking for some HK cafe that serves up some viral dishes and great value, then I recommend this place.

The complimentary house soup landed flat for my dining companion who barely finished half of hers, whereas I enjoyed this comforting no-frills soup. The portions are decent and the flavours were mostly good. The sweet and sour pork, unfortunately, was mostly batter and had very little meat. The green beans were crunchy and good, the chicken slices were well-velveted, but the black bean sauce was barely there. The beef ho fun was less oily which we appreciated. The ginormous bowl of white rice felt homey and we barely made a dent. Overall, MY was ok. Spicy pork soup vermicelli combo comes with eggs and toast. Soup vermicelli was good and flavorful. I opted for scrambled eggs and it was perfectly smooth and creamy. Toasts were a bit on a bland side. Curry fish ball, turnip and pig skin was decent. Slightly oily and also a bit on a sweeter note. Curry beef brisket has a hint of spicyness and has coconut milk. Nice curry taste but also a bit too sweet imo. Brisket was tender overall. Tomato sauce pork cutlet with rice was good flavour. Pork cutlet was crispy and juicy but tomato sauce was a little sweeter than usual. Coconut red bean drink was decent but the red beans were too hard and lacks the sandyness (softer texture).
