Miso Ramen with Pumpkin Tempura and Tempura Salmon Roll.
Ele S.

Great food, with nice ambiance and great service. I would recommend for anyone on ASU campus who wants ramen.

Sashimi nigiri combo

Not sure why this place isn't rated higher. For Mill Ave, the prices are fair ($5 beers!) and you can get an entire sashimi/nigiri sampler for $16.50. Service is quick and efficient, and the vibes are great with two large tv's playing anime.

Maybe it's my Gen X showing, but I was not prepared for this place. We sat down at a table... looked around for someone to help... nope... none. Then we saw a tablet on a different table and re-sat ourselves there. Started to place the order and then the tablet asked us what table we were seated at.... Well... we searched the table for a number and eventually flagged down the food runner and he did some things and we were FINALLY able to order. Ordered two classic ramens, an app, and two drinks. The bartender brought drinks and said if we needed refills to fill them up ourselves. Ramen came out... it was tasty. The pork was really fatty and we both just removed it... I'd say skip the pork. Halfway through the ramen our app came out. We finished eating and then, as luck would have it, our tablet died. Had to flag down the bartender who brought over another tablet. When he handed it over for me to input the tip... wait a minute... I don't tip when I use a kiosk at McDonalds and have to get my own drinks... if this is the future of sit down dining, saving money by not having servers, great! I hope they are paying the food runner a decent wage. Because I am who I am, I did leave a tip, but nowhere near the 20% I usually leave. Overall food was good. Service was non existent. Skip the pork.

Tonkotsu Ramen, Tokyo Style Ramen, gyoza
Tony L.

Food was delicious. We tried the gyoza appetizer, as well as the two ramens shown in the photo. Service was a little slow- you order through electronic tablets and no one will come back to check on you again. But the place was cool and nerdy and the food was great.

This is a self-serve type restaurant. You seat yourself and there is a QR code where you order your food. You can keep the tab open or pay it upfront. It's interesting that they ask you for tip before you even see your food. The water is even self service. They will bring you your first glass of water, but after that you have to walk to the soda machine, which also makes me question why we are asked to give a tip before we receive our food. My husband ordered chicken, wings, and drumstick chicken skewers. The wings were crispy and had a honey soy glaze which was delicious, but you only get three small flat pieces. So technically 1.5 wing for $7. The drumsticks were small as well but nicely flavored. My husband was done with his two appetizers before my Ramen came out. They definitely forgot about me, but that is OK when I told them they brought one out immediately, which makes me believe that they are kind of premade. I ordered the shoyu Ramen. No no no. Save your money. It was salty, yet flavorless if that makes any sense. It seems that the appetizers here are what to order. I would not order the Ramen.

Crispy gyoza

This is a really cool place on Mill Avenue. I love the decor! There are a lot of interesting things to see on the wall, some anime on the TV, a bar, and paper lanterns. Even the cups water was served in had anime scenes. There was a sign saying to seat yourself. There is a QR code on the table which links to the menu and opens up an account for your table. After you order you can either pay your tab on your phone then, or leave your tab open to order more. When your done, just open it up on your phone and pay. I only saw one person working in the dining room, and all she did was quietly bring out food, then clean tables. It was fast, easy, and efficient! We ordered the crispy gyoza, which was served with a spicy sauce. I'm a huge fan of gyoza, and I really liked this sauce. We also ordered the Japanese red curry with pork "bowl." The word "bowl" was misleading (in a good way)--it came on a large plate and was a huge serving. I don't like curry, but my son loved it. We also got a dragon roll. It was pretty big, and very good. Presentation was good, too. We quickly became fans of Matsuri Izikaya, and I can see us being regulars here.

Beef Noodle Soup
Jacquilin N.

Beef noodle soup had a rich broth flavor. I would recommend adding the spicy paste for a little kick! I would definitely order this again! I would pass on the sushi though.. the rice was hard and the sushi quality was average. Ambiance was great! Loved all the lighting and decor. Service was fine.

This is a self service type of restaurant, you seat yourself and a waiter/waitress will come to you and give you a tablet to order off of. The waitress was pretty nice and when I went (since no one was there) the ambience was peaceful nd quiet. The food itself was really good, I got the tempura udon I think? I was excepting to get those little tiny ass tempuras that i usually get at Japanese restaurants but this one had some big ass tempura AND they were delicious. Out of all soups that i have ate, this was the only one that had really good broth that i actually drank and finished, the broth was so flavorful and I had also got some tofu on the side that was also delicious.

Claudia R.

Honestly think this place was overrated and horrible customer service. IG makes it look like it has this great ambiance but it honestly wasn't great. Food was subpar, but the ramen lacked flavor. I ordered a matcha tea and it tasted like the idea of matcha and tap water.

Treena C.

I was here around 6:30PM. You walk in, seat yourself, and then scan for the menu at your table, and then self-order on your phone. You can pay on your phone when you finish- or even when you are ordering. We were greeted and given water once we sat down. Pretty casual atmosphere with low and high top tables. They do have a waitlist available on Yelp. And they are open until 9:30PM. We ordered the Samurai Ramen with shrimp tempura and an extra egg and the Miso King Ramen with chicken casu, crispy tofu and bok choi. Our food arrived within 10 minutes and it was nice and hot. Both dishes looked delicious and they were. Fantastic broth in both ramens with large, fresh shrimp. The eggs were done perfectly. We did not order drinks but they do offer some alcoholic beverages. For two Ramen soups with extras, tax and tip, it was $53.81. The Ramen itself was around $16.00, a little high for ramen, but it is a restaurant on Mill. And once they charge for extras- bok choi is $1.20, shrimp tempura is $4.50, an extra egg is $1.20, it does add up. That being said, I would go again- just not everyday.

fruit sandwich
Natalie G.

Saw a tiktok of the fruit sandwiches and decided to check it out, they have good ramen, gyoza and chicken karage. They also offer pretty interesting drink choices and ofc the fruit sandwiches, the only down side was that they didn't have the exact one i wanted and it was a bit messy to eat, but the experience was good overall!

Shiyo ramen
Lu T.

The food was pretty good as we ordered a bunch of different things. Ramen was tasty. Beef curry was decent and rice bowl with karaage was solid. My only critique would be that you have to order over the phone and make payment there. Service was OK as they only responded after you ordered on the phone. I tried to get someone's attention to order the traditional way, but I was ignored. Still, if you are Tech savvy, highly recommend. If you are not, still come but be patient with the way to order and pay.

Cameo L.

This was such amazing experience! As soon as you walk in there are two large TVs over the bar and they are playing anime! Once you are seated your server will go over how the restaurant works. You will need to make sure that your phone is charged but you will order everything from your phone! You will scan the QR code and order away! There is a water and silverware station on the corner of the restaurant. And next to that is a fridge that has desserts and other snacks/treats. The pictures attached is all of the food that we ordered from Katsu chicken to ramen and then some yellowtail sushi tacos! Everything came out in a timely manner, and it was delicious. They were in smaller portions, but that made it easy for us to try everything that we wanted to!!!! 10/10 would recommend going back to this place!!!!

The food was not very authentic. The fried rice and karaage were really bad. Ramen was ok but overall not great food and experience.

When I walked in, I was promptly directed to where I should go so I could place a takeout order. The genuine courtesy of the staff here was just what I needed after a long day. Lots of great options for sushi but ramen sounded amazing on a chilly winter day. I ordered a couple options and requested for the toppings to be separated so my picky eater could pick out what she didn't like. The food was out promptly and packaged with such care. Once I got it back to my daughter's hospital room, we were able to feast on the best meal we had all day. I will definitely be coming back to this place again and I am grateful for their kindness just when I needed it. Highly recommend!

When we walked in it had a very fishy smell, so it kind of made us second guess our choice. But we went for it anyhow. The greeter/server was very pleasant and sat us. It was very clean inside with ample space between seat. We browsed through the menu and started with our usual edamame and pot stickers. The edamame was salted well throughout where a lot of places just put the salt on top only. We ordered a couple varieties of sake which were both good. Out of all of the things we ordered the karange skewer was just a little more oily than were use to, but still good. The spicy salmon roll had really great flavor and the lollipop roll was probably one of the better versions that we have had. The musubi was giant to say the least, it was good, but offered a bit too much rice. Overall the food and service was great and we were very happy that we ended up here!

On a Sunday evening, after checking out the Desert Botanical Garden, I was looking for some food in…read morethe area. I came across Zu Izakaya and it's great reviews as one of the options. I love Japanese food so my decision was made. I drove over and parked in their complimentary lot. Ambiance (3.5/5): I've been to Japan and there are plenty of izakayas there. Think of them as small bars which often serve solid food. Zu fits that bit. It's a relatively small restaurant, probably seats about 30 people. and it's pretty no frills for a Japanese spot. I was seated at a booth in the corner of the restaurant. They have free WiFi which is always a good touch. Service (3/5): Service was friendly, though a bit inconsistent. My waitress wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. The type of service where you have to flag them down to get what you want and to close out. Drinks (4/5): Zu has a nice menu of Japanese and Korean beverages, including sake, soju, Japanese beer, and more. With that being said, I just had an iced green tea. Food (4/5): I got a nice variety. I went with the Japanese sausage off of the grill menu, the OBI mayo roll off of the sushi menu, and the cheese corn off of the appetizer menu. Let's start with the sausage. It's a small item, two small sausages, but absolutely delicious. The sausage was bursting with flavor and basted in a sweet sauce. Minus the portion size, perfection. The cheese corn also hit the spot, but the execution was off. The corn is served on a hot platter, and unfortunately some of the corn on the edges was badly burnt. The type of situation where they should start over. Which they didn't. Lastly, the OBI mayo roll is essentially a California roll with marinated warm shrimp on top in a mayo sauce. I didn't love the hot and cold combo (shrimp and sushi), but outside of the temperature, it was a delicious roll. All in all, a very food meal. My only gripe with Japanese food is that it can get expensive quick. Given that Zu is in Tempe, I was hoping that prices would be a little cheaper. With that being said, they do have a solid happy hour (and reverse happy hour) with both food and drink specials. Next time I stop by, I'd like to check out some of their Korean options. I focused on the Japanese stuff this time (which makes the majority of the menu). Next time around, the bulgogi is calling my name!

The music set a fun vibe, and the service was nice and attentive. We ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen ($12.50) and sake bombs with House Sake ($3) and Kirin Light ($7.50). I loved that the sake came in a clear tokkuri. The ramen was soo delicious. I added some chili oil to my broth to give it some spice. The spice is one of those that slowly creeps up on you, but doesn't linger too long. The chashu pork was thin and savory. I usually don't enjoy bean sprouts, but here they were subtle and added a pleasant texture to the ramen. I also love that they included the naruto fish cake. I think what makes this place stand out is that at this price point, quality ramen like this is rare to find nowadays. I would consider this place a hidden gem and definitely recommend it if you are near the area. I look forward to eating it again!

Nishikawa Ramen is a small little ramen shop decorated with anime posters from Naruto, One Piece,…read moreand Dragon Ball. There were also cute little trinkets of My Neighbor Totoro. Upon entering, we were free to seat ourselves and chose a booth by the wall. It was not busy at all and the service was quick and friendly. We started off with a large sake bomb paired with a Kirin Light ($15). We then ordered two Tonkotsu Ramens, one medium spice and one hot spice ($15.99 each). Honestly, the hot spice level did not taste spicy at all, so I would recommend going extra hot if you like spice. They also provide chili powder on the table if you want to add more spice yourself. The ramen broth itself could have used a tad more flavor. I lightly added some soy sauce to the broth which is something I often do to add a little kick. I loved all of the toppings included, from the green onions to the kikurage (wood ear mushroom). My favorite part was the pork chashu, which was really tender and delicious. I also appreciated that the ramen came with a full soft boiled egg rather than half an egg, and the egg was perfectly runny. Before leaving, we ordered their tea special that was buy one get one. We got a matcha milk tea and a cafe latte which I forgot to take a photo of. I felt like the cafe latte could have used a little more sweetness to balance it. Also, I found it neat that Nishikawa offers a rewards program, not something I see often at ramen shops. My true rating would be 4.5 due to some of the criticisms I mentioned above, but overall I still had a good experience. Thank you for serving us. Visited 5/2/26

I sat there for several minutes and when she came back, she asked if I was ready to order. I asked for a menu and then she tapped this little sign on the table that had a QR code on it. I guess they want you to use your phone to look up the menu but then she brought me a printed menu and a glass of water. I had about a minute to look at the menu before the waitress came back and asked what I wanted. I ordered the small portion of the chicken karaage appetizer and the Nishikawa Black Ramen. Both items came out at about the same time. The chicken was good and there was a lot which somewhat surprised me because I thought they had given me a large portion by mistake. The only downside was that the plate was really small so the chicken kept tumbling onto the table. The ramen was just ok. It came in a really big bowl and there was a lot of broth and toppings but relatively little noodles in comparison. It was more like a bowl of soup. The slice of pork was huge but a little bit chewy when I was expecting it to be tender. The egg wasn't sliced so it was difficult to pick up the entire piece with my chopsticks. The chicken was $7 and the ramen was $18. I would have been ok just getting the chicken, perhaps a large portion for $12. I wouldn't get this particular ramen again. With tax and a tip my total was a little over $31 which isn't the most I've spent at a ramen restaurant, but it wasn't cheap either. I wasn't offered a refill on my drink until after I had paid and was ready to leave. In fact, I only saw the waitress once after my food was brought out, and that was when she brought me the bill. The rest of the time she was somewhere in the kitchen.
