Tasty dumplings to start off the meal.
Ann W.

My friend arrived first and grabbed the last available table during a busy lunch rush. I am grateful I did not have to wait since I tend to get hangry. Others following us added their names to the waitlist. The restaurant is small with just a handful of tables. One chef, it appears, prepared all the meals. I barely glanced at the menu; I already knew I was having the ramen. The only question was which one. My friend selected the eel bowl while I had the miso pork soup. The latter was served with sliced pork, bamboo shoots, fish cake, and seaweed. The broth was full of flavor; I enjoyed every slurp. I appreciated that the meal was sizeable and inexpensive - I was able to stretch it to two meals. We did not linger given the number of people waiting.

Came here for lunch to check the place out since the old owner retired. A lots has changed, and if you are a fan of the old Matsuchan you need to prepare yourself. I went by myself to check it out before I brought the rest of the family. There were good things, there were bad things. Let's start with the bad. The menu is greatly diminished in regards to the different kinds of ramen you can get. Curry? Gone. Hot n Spicy? Gone. Corn Butter? Gone. Champon? Gone. There are three choices. Unfortunately none of those three are ones my family likes so this will not be an option for them. The serving size is 1/3 of what it was. The number of included items in the ramen is greatly reduced. There is no carrying home leftovers for the next day becuse you will finish your meal. It is also a bit more expensive when you factor in what you are getting for the price you are paying. Now the good. Had the tantanmen which is a delicious spicy ramen. Noodles were springy and the egg was perfect. Service was top noch. Very polite. Ramen came out quickly. Water was refilled quickly and multiple times. AC works. Overall I will probably not be back. My favorite styles of ramen are gone. Quality food and service is nice, but unfortunately if you don't have the items I want to buy, I'll go somewhere else. If you know, you know. I wish them the best and hope they fill a need for ramen in that area.

This place is under new management. A lovely family took over not too long ago. Service time wasn't bad, the guest service was 5 Stars, the mom was so sweet! The inside is a bit small, so larger group more than 6 may have a little bit of a wait. But still try. We had a small party of 3. Location isn't the best as there isn't much visibility for the shop, as it is located near the back of the strip-mall-shop. So, we tried a few different things - all of which were good. I will rate them 1 to 10, 10 being the best, 1 being not the best. 1. All of the Ramen dishes were delicious, 9 out of 10 2. The karaage was so good 10 out of 10 3. Does Shumai also tasty, 6 out of 10. 4. The sushi was fresh and delicious, 7 out of 10 5. Spring rolls, very very tasty, came to the table piping hot 8 out of 10. 5. The takoyaki, really good, 8 out of 10 Overall great place, the new management is still working on their place, but you should give these guys a try. I'm going back again.

We went back and we're so incredibly sad. They changed owners and as of June 10, 2025 the people that used to run this place no longer do it. Although the name is the same, the interior has completely changed the cute kitschy interior is completely wiped out. The menu is completely different. Where they used to have a lot of different Ramen options and noodle options all gone. Now they just have three Ramen all for either 16 or $17 each. The rest of it was sushi. We went on a Saturday night at about 6 o'clock and there was literally nobody else there. The restaurant was empty of other customers and the parking lot was pretty empty too. I was so incredibly disappointed. I honestly did not eat the food and didn't even order. We turned around and walked out. I was just sad that I went to a place that was called the same name and it was nothing alike. We drove 30 minutes to this place and won't come back. I wish them the best, but this shake up was not for us. They were friendly. The place was still bright. And it seemed clean in front.

Matsuchan is as authentic as you can get! It's owned by a very adorable family and the inside can only sear like 12 people. You can't miss the line of people waiting to get in either! I had corresponded with the business on their instagram and asked about vegetarian and vegan options and they sent me an entire list of things I could eat - UNREAL. I got some umeboshi onigiri which had the perfect amount of saltiness and deliciousness! I ordered their creamy vegetarian ramen and added and egg and the portion size was very generous. Be prepared to take a lot home!! 10/10 would recommend and would come back!!

Service 10/10 Food 10/10 Sushi was fresh 10/10 I didn't know this place before the new owners and I got to talk them them very kind and sweet. For everyone saying that the menu is small they just opened up they will add more things to the menu just give them time. I wish and hope the best for them will continue to support them it does feel like a mom and pop shop love how it feels will add more pics when I come next time.

Entrance. It can be easy to miss because the sign is the same color as next door.

Some of, if not the best ramen I've ever had. Everything is made from scratch including the noodles and it shows! I'd be surprised if they don't grow rapidly with this kind of quality. It's a small outfit for now with limited drink choices, though many are imports (no alcohol), but worth the visit to just try the ramen!

A family favorite. It's a small and cozy restaurant tucked in the heart of Canton. It seats literally like 20 people, so you always want to make sure you're going in between a rush. Everyone is always polite and efficient and the food comes out fast. You can't go wrong with ordering anything there, and it's affordable and so delicious. I've tried every single ramen dish on the menu and you literally cannot go wrong with anything. Although, we believe the owner (chef) is trying to retire and sell so hopefully if someone is buying it, they keep it the same. Otherwise, I encourage everyone to go visit Matsuchan before he officially retires!

Update: came back and tried the Tantanmen. It's spicy but oh wow, this is my new favorite ramen. For those who don't know, Tantanmen is based off of the Sichuan dandan noodles dish. So Tantanmen is flavored with chili oil, sesame paste, and some soy milk I think. I tasted all of that! It's got the slightly nutty sesame flavor and the kick of the chili oil, added with some ground pork. It really amazed me. I think this is my favorite ramen dish now.

New ownership for a longtime Canton restaurant in a quiet strip mall on Sheldon Rd off of Ford Rd. Called to place a takeout order. Note: New number is 734-691-5045. Telephone number under former ownership is still listed on Yelp. Ordered over the phone for a california roll and chicken karaage appetizer. Cali roll was delicious, good sized pieces. The cali roll automatically comes with eel sauce on top so ask to not have sauce on it upon ordering if you definitely don't want eel sauce. The chicken karaage was tasty, crispy and seemed pre-marinated prior to frying. The dish comes with a light, sweet dipping sauce with a slight kick. The restaurant has been renovated and is very clean with a few tables for dining in. Upon arrival to pick up my order, the staff was very welcoming and courteous. Menu is limited but it provides the good basics of a simple japanese style meal. Ramen bowls, sushi, appetizers and a couple of poke bowls. Ample parking makes pickup easy when you order takeout.

The food is great and is so affordable! Big servings and the prices include taxes already. The service is quick. This vibes here are so homey and that's how you know the food hits!

Came back after several months as store was closed for renovations because owners retired and it changed hands. The good news is the interior looks clean and new....dirty carpet gone with pastel tile everywhere. Hours are 11:00 to 8 everyday with no more funky open/closed times. Bad news is smaller streamlined menu eliminating my wonderful "ramen set" for $11. In its place, was ramen bowl with thin sliced pork in light pork broth. Smelled like pork roast and was delicious! However, no seafood dumplings or fried rice...just pork slices over noodles at $16. Was it good and hearty? Yes. Was it impressive enough to bring me back? Don't think so.

Very cozy atmosphere. We arrived right when they opened at 5pm and the restaurant was filled in seconds. The portions are big and the prices are very reasonable. My husband and I shared the hot & spicy ramen and the eel rice. Wish this restaurant was closer to us!

Are there vegetarian options (not vegan, but not with fish stock or fish things)?

There is miso soup, miso ramen, vegetable and tofu ramen, Yakisoba with vegetables, fried rice, avocado roll, tossed salad, seaweed ramen, etc. Just remember to ask if there…

Do you have any non pork ramen broth options?

I know that at least one is made with fish broth. They also have a full vegetarian ramen option. I would think that you could customize if you asked.

Is the meat here halal?

It is not.

Is there indoor dining?

Yes. There is seating for about 12-15.

Do they make their own noodles?

It seems that they are no longer open for dinner during the week?

I've gone multiple times on the weekend for lunch! They do close around 1pm and reopen for dinner

As one who hasn't really ventured beyond Sushi, what are a few recommended dishes? Thanks in…

The ramen set is nice to have a sample of everything. It comes with fried rice, shumai and ramen. The fried rice has a more milder taste than Chinese fried rice and the rice is slightly fluffier in my opinion. The shumai (seafood dumpling) really…

Ramen fit the bill, a meal that would be both comforting and delicious. I've been curious about this restaurant from the many times I've dined in the area. A glance at the online menu, and I realized that I would be happy here. In addition to ramen, they offer interesting appetizers, sushi rolls, and bowls. The restaurant itself is large, with booths running along the window and smaller tables on both sides of my half-wall. The large space is separated by red lacquered scroll dividers and decorated with traditional red lanterns and non-traditional long pendants. I love the bold artwork and the gold accents throughout the space. I always get the Tonkotsu Ramen when trying out a new ramen place. It is how I benchmark the restaurant. The broth was rich and intense; the ramen was topped with pork belly, jammy eggs, julienned wood ear mushrooms (a favorite), corn, and fermented/ pickled (?) bamboo shoots. The noodles were straight and thin, unlike the typical "wavy" ones I am used to. There was also a fishy taste that I first attributed to shrimp, but later, when I watched a video on the restaurant's website, I realized it came from the fish in the shoyu sauce. Overall, it was a deliciously complex dish that I couldn't easily replicate at home. Service was friendly, helpful, and professional.

I'd say the vibes are a bit too over the top and deliberate, which makes me feel that this establishment is not really authentic. The food is not the best. They said they're "known for their ramen" but I hardly find it tasty. The noodles are on the harder side, not bouncy enough, and overall texture is just on the lower end. Their non-ramen items are not better either. Service is good. The waitress was attentive and had a good attitude. Feels like this establishment put all their effort in the "peripheral" things but didn't score the best on the most important one which is the taste itself.

I went in and barely anyone was in there, we were sure it must be good right? Wrong. First off was the wait staff not very friendly and pretty mute to any questions / not understanding of asks. The 2 chicken appetizers - they were hot and fried crispy but chicken inside was pink and red.. felt it wasn't cooked all the way. My husband and I stopped eating it in case we get sick. We left it on the table they kept asking if we wanted a box three times, no they were terrible. But this is after I sent back my ramen.. Again I read a raving review, saw a photo of "uncovering this hidden gem". I try ramen all over the place, I was happy to try what they were popular for. No this place is terrible and a waste of money. This ramen is the worst I have had in my life that I took two bites. One it burnt my entire mouth because it was boiling - probably so I couldn't even taste the real taste. After letting it cool I tried it and it was awful tasting, not spicy like requested. And smelled burnt like plastic & tasted like that. I asked waitress for help - she said "oh I can get you more spicy?" I said no it's not even tasting good at all. She said well you ordered it and now it's wasted.. so I'm not sure what we can do about it. Then She yells across the restaurant to the "chef" about my complaint behind the sushi counter. He said something I don't even know- but then said sorry you didn't like it. Then she goes "we have multiple people and full tables come in and eat this everyday and Never complain all the time". I said okay great. Well I don't like it and it's not worth the cost. It's not at all what's advertised. And also the restaurant was basically empty... Worst meal I've actually had overall. Even after sending it back the appetizers cost $55 that were also bad and never got finished - but we didn't want to complain about the entire meal at this point we didn't eat some. This meal was so bad, I could have walked out. But not that kind of person. I would suggest to take your hard earned money elsewhere for better food. Still regret picking this place.

I came on my own, ordered $25 worth of sushi, and was reading a book. I ordered a single piece of uni appetizer, which was $10, and figured it would be a really high quality large piece. I was pretty disappointed at 3 small uni pieces laid across rice. I was hoping for one huge piece of uni for that price. But, the quality was very good! I also had a salmon and avocado roll and spicy tuna, and both of those were very good. The standout was the spicy tuna, made with chili oil I'm sure. Spicy but not unbearable spicy. I think they had real wasabi and actually my favorite thing I ate today was their pickled ginger! The ginger pieces are crisp with a fresh crunch that I haven't gotten from typical, limp sushi ginger. I asked for low sodium soy sauce when my sushi came out and waited at least 5 minutes before giving up and using the regular soy sauce... A couple minutes later the waitress finally brought the low sodium version, said nothing about it being lost or any other possible explanation for taking so long, said something like "Oh" when she saw I had used the regular one already. But, I also think she didn't speak English. When I was more than halfway done eating but obviously still eating, she brought over the bill. As I was still eating, she came by, picked it up, and opened it to check if my card was in it, I kid you not, 3 separate times, over the course of maybe 10 minutes. I had to ask for more water when it was already empty. One time she got more water, the other time she literally walked away as I was talking to her...but again, I don't think she was purposely ignoring me as much as she seemed afraid of me? She probably thought I was laughing at her but really I just laugh awkwardly as a defense mechanism in awkward situations...oh well! Would I recommend this place for the delicious food? Sure! Would I go out of my way to come here again after whatever that service experience was? Personally, no, because I didn't feel like anyone was even trying to provide good service. If my waitress was confused I wish she would have sent someone else over to translate or for help. But maybe it's better if you speak Japanese/ignore any awkward service faux pas...the fact that it was full of Japanese people speaking Japanese is a great sign!
