The food was good, but not extraordinary. I normally love chicken karaage, but it was a bit bland at this place. They didn't even serve it with any form of dipping sauce like kewpie mayo. The eggplant dish was really good, and steak dish was decent. The eel was good. Most of the dishes came with a side salad of what looked like store bought cabbage instead of the softer and thinner cabbage side that normally comes with your food at other Japanese restaurants. Overall all, the prices seem a bit high for such simple dishes that lacked some flavor. And the price to portion ratio was a bit too high for it to be worth another try for me. The service was okay, but not that nice. The one older waitress seemed annoyed with us. The ambiance is kind of an old school restaurant cozy in my opinion. The ambiance was amazing. A lot of fun, and felt really legit. Authentic alcohol bottles, ribbons, and banners bring life and color to the walls. The lighting is warm and moody. There's room, but eating inside gives a very pleasant community atmosphere, like you're dining alone and yet together. The service was fine. They provide you with a binder with actual, printed pictures of each menu item (printed photos, like the kind you would get developed yourself at Walgreens.) I loved this touch- it felt inviting, home-y, and accessible for non Japanese. I got two sushi rolls which were not particularly generous. The fish was fresh and colorful enough, but you get exactly what you ask for and nothing more. Didn't love that. The salmon roll is just salmon with a bit of wasabi smeared inside. The soy sauce available is Kikkoman, which is fine. The prices were high but still in the competitive range. The restroom was clean. The place is obviously beloved as it was absolutely packed, but IDK... there are several sushi spots in this market. This place is way overpriced and quality sucks now. The only people that come here are Japanese expats because they are home sick and willing to over pay for basic items. Sushi, $3.80 a piece. Fish is thin, rice break apart once you attempt to pick it up. Fish taste fresh though. I have the worst katsudon here. Pork cutlet is tough and dry like I cook it at home. Portion is small too. The small plates are very expensive but nothing is marinated. Even salad they change to plain shredded cabbage. Chef is drunk and lazy because he can get away with it. read more

My favorite restaurant ever! Ami-san and Pedro-san are the best people ever. They always great me and my family when we enter. I have been going here for over a decade and the food is still the best. The is we us an actual fisherman and loves telling his fishing stories. He's very friendly too and will come sit with you and talk to his customers. Sushi is so fresh. Their sushi rice is the best. I love the yakitori here the most. I always order so much. They have a really interesting fried rice that tastes so yummy. Their hamachi is also seasoned perfectly. I don't think I have had anything here that's bad tbh. Definitely a place to come for authentic Japanese food in an authentic Japanese setting. read more

If you aren't asian they treat you like a second class citizen. I came back after avoiding this place for years because my son goes to a Japanese immersion school and wanted to practice. But they quickly brought out another foreign english speaker who didn't know any Japanese or the menu. I felt more frustrated trying to explain what I wanted. But the chinese next to me who didn't speak a lick of Japanese or barely english got the full Japanese experience. The waitress even took the Japanese menu from me and gave it to them. My friends wanted to check out this Novi located restaurant restaurant they all got sushi but I got the shouyo ramen it took about 10-15 mins to come out and when it came out it wasnt had tasty as other shouyo ramen I've had it tasted very chewy and the broth just wasn't as flavorful I had two BITES and told the waitress that I didn't like it she said she'll take it back, at regular restaurants you'd think when the waitress saids they will take it back it means they take off that item off your bill, but no the bill comes and they charged me for it I asked the server to take it off the bill she said she can't void it off. I don't like making a fuss at restaurants so I just paid for it but I think it was very unfair that they stole my money. I don't recommend going to the place, I won't go there again ambiance was dark and felt depressing. read more

Moved to the area months ago and this has become our weekly spot because we love it so much! Very authentic Japanese restaurant, quality traditional dishes and everyone speaks Japanese. Its without a doubt, the best sushi in the area and we rave to all of our friends to come try this place. The sushi rice, the way it's prepared, this makes a huge difference!! We enjoy traditional nigiri and sashimi sushi and from all the sushi places in the area, the quality of fish here is night and day compared to other places! The server Amy, is so warm and loving and you just feel so loved and welcomed. She knows us by our first names. She's the best!! The food is fantastic, and the experience is even better. Doesn't look like much from the outside but pretty authentic Japanese place. I've noticed this is a popular lunch spot for businesses around the area. Even when they are busy they are pretty quick, which is helpful when on your lunch hour. You don't have to be super adventurous to eat here. I usually stay away from the fish entrees and order a ramen dish (which come with a California roll, total plus) or the Chicken rice bowl, which I love the soy sauce mixture they use. Just keep in mind for this chicken bowl they also use dark meat. I haven't tried their breaded pork rice bowl, but it does look delicious. The dishes are served with a miso soup and salad and the dressing is very good, not your usual orange ginger dressing. Each entree has an explanation of what exactly it is you are ordering, which was helpful for me. No bells and whistles, but overall I would say check it out for lunch! read more

While the food was quite descent, the quality of service by servers who do not even seem to know or taste different dishes the res offer is beyond my understanding. One of the server said that he was vegetarian so he goes to indian res for lunch before coming to wirk and had no idea of what to recommend. throughout the dinner, they had to be called mutiple times instead of coming to check on us for the different dished we ordered to enjoy. often times they were standing against the wall or looking at their cell phone. we agreed that food was descent but the quality of service dampened our fun dinner. This place is my go-to for Enochi Bacon. Sooo delicous and got me hooked that when I travel the US to find this appetizer, so far none has come close to how this restaurant serves it. This place has plenty of parking, and has more of a family feel to me. They have Sake's that you can put on the house, and from my understanding for next time. It is a very japanese oriented restaurant. Lunch rush is usually insane due to servicing surrounding japanese companies. At night, this place comes alive with izayaka dishes, ( chicken on a stick, tofu, veggies, fried stuff, etc..etc.. ) there are many to chose from. There are very good menus stick all over the wall. Recently, they had added english under it so for the non-speakers can be easily understand. Anyways, at Night time, they service japanese business peeps with the intent of drinking/eating and just talking with friends/co-workers. During lunch time, it is a whole different story. Since it is a small restaurant, beat the rush by going a bit earlier or later. there is always lunch of the day which comes out fairly quickly. Wow Burger Boy goes Japanese. What is this world coming to? Some of my suppliers(Japanese) wanted to meet after work for dinner. They live in the area and suggested this restaurant. I have had lunch with these gentlemen so my first question was, "Do they have hamburgers?". Of course they laughed. When I arrived they were drinking Japanese beer. I had a couple of those(don't remember name). Very good. Then they ordered the food for me. The menu is on sheets of paper on the wall, IN Japanese. Well, I guessed right, no burgers. Anyhow, they ordered some chicken on stick(I think), some beef strips that had a great seasoning. I had some rice too. This wasn't a bad meal, but I would prefer something a little more on the american side. The clientele was 99% Japanese. This is typically the place I point people to as an example of authentic Japanese food in the Detroit area generally and Novi area specifically. I was introduced to it by Japanese friends and have spent many evenings there and enjoyed the food, beer and shochu every time. If you're not Japanese and would enjoy the adventure of eating at a place where you're in the minority, I strongly urge you to try it. Get ramen, and try some appetizers besides sushi. You know you're in the right place when you walk in and you're the only American in the place. My Japanese friends introduced me to this place, it is one of our favorite hang out spots after kendo practice. I about fell out of my chair when I saw that they not only served okonomiyaki but takuyaki as well. This is one of maybe two places in Michigan that I know of that serve these two dishes. I normally let my friends order because I can never remember the names of all the dishes we order. But I can tell you that everything that I have had out of this place has never failed to satisfy me. One has to be able to read Japanese to make sense of the menu on the wall. Regular menus are also available. For hubby and me, the "means test" is the sushi rice. The day we were there for lunch, the rice was not seasoned and was dry. The pork belly in my noodle soup looked dry and unappetizing. Not enough green vegetables in it. This is the real deal. All the usual goodies you'll find at a good izakaya in Japan. Chicken gizzards, jelly fish (they spell it jelle fish), the usual tempura (spelt tempra there), all sorts of grilled fish (we had the mackerel-yummy!). The usual sushi and sashimi. Ramen and udon. Onigiri. etc. etc. Walls plastered with the names of the menu items --- all in Japanese. Other than a pair of Taiwanese women that came in a little later in the evening, the entire time I was there, I was the only non-nihon-jin. (Other than also the South African waitress.) I did not know there were so many Japanese people in the great state of Michigan. Japanese people also don't use Yelp, which is why there are so few reviews here, and why I felt compelled to write a review here. read more

Like many of the sushi places around, they do not have v. good descriptions of the dishes on the menu. Makes it harder to order something. Was there w/ a friend. We each got a noodle soup meal. The broth was nothing much, v. little taste. The chix in the dish was not appealing. The restaurant was not busy. We were drinking water, and the waitress, after bringing out food, was rarely visible, and never checked to see if we needed more water. We did. There are other, better, Japanese places around. I have dined at this place on two separate occasions, once with a large party and once with just 2. This is a decent family owned Izakaya-type restaurant. There is a very extensive menu of authentic japanese dishes as well as sake. You can tell that this place is very authentic from the fact that there are many Japanese families that come dine here. The location is small, so if you have a big party, it is probably best to make a reservation. I highly recommend the okonomiyaki which is basically a fried seafood pancake as well as the takoyaki (delicious doughy octupus balls). I have also have the ramen which is also pretty good if you're in the mood for something with the soup based. I prefer the shoyu (soy sauce) broth. I have also had a couple of other dishes that I can't pronounce (grilled fish thing and grilled beef thing), chicken karaage (basically fried chicken), and they were half decent but not anything too notable. I would give the restaurant a higher rating if they had better service and more affordable items. Many items are priced excessively high (for example iced tea is 5 dollars) and there is usually only 1 or 2 servers for the entire restaurant of maybe 40-50 people which is not nearly enough! Not many people know about this place because most people would choose Ajishin whenever they come to Novi. The atmosphere is very cozy but have a Japanese oriented feeling to it. Very authentic and delicious Japanese food, and they're not just limited to sushi. The interior is small and cozy, but that can be difficult if you're tall or like your personal space. However, the wait staff is pretty bad. They don't really talk to you or acknowledge your requests/orders. Be assertive or you may not get your check as quickly as you'd like!
