Spring Rolls

The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. The establishment was very clean! I have to say that the staff was very patient as we worked our way through the menu. I was so excited that they had ample vegan dishes. I asked it for the curry dish with fried tofu just make sure you note that you do not want egg. Overall, the service was incredible and I'll definitely be checking out this establishment again.

Deciding on dinner is always difficult for me. Do I prepare a meal with the just-purchased ingredients in my fridge or do I pick up something near home? Oftentimes, I get out of work so late, I'm in no mood to do anything but stuff my face. That's where Basil Bowl comes in. It's new to the neighborhood, taking over a Sy Thai to-go location. Sad. However, it is a fine replacement. This place offers ramen, pho, and Thai so I knew I would find something I would love. At first, I considered the Pad Thai, my go-to at Thai places. However, as soon as I spotted the Pineapple Curry Ramen, decision made. And to top that off, I selected the roasted duck, my favorite protein. That is not to say that I wasn't tempted by the beef and pork pho, pad se ew, or any of the curries. Next time, I promised myself. While waiting for my meal, I noted the light coming into the building from two walls of windows, the bright, lime green walls and fluorescent orange chairs, and the wood furnishings and accents. The restaurant is not large, but there were more than enough seats for the dine-in customers. About half of the people coming in placed to-go orders. To start, I had the crab rangoon and the spring rolls. The former was mostly cream cheese and not the perfect balance of crab and cheese I usually prefer. It should have been called cheese rangoons. However, the spring rolls were satisfyingly crispy with a flavorful filling. I have my eye on the gyoza or the bang bang shrimp the next time I'm here. Moving on, the ramen included pineapple chunks, of course, but also red and green bell peppers, chili peppers, tomatoes, and onions. The noodles were tender, chewy, and delicious in a spicy and creamy broth. The roasted duck was lovely. I would have loved more of it. The portions are nicely sized so I had more than enough to take home for another meal. Although this is a casual dining restaurant (think Panera), the staff was helpful and kind.

First time trying this place. Nice clean decor. Extensive menu with lots of vegetarian options. Lunch special also available. Prices are not cheap per say but portions are big. The guy at the counter was also a cook. A bit grumpy may be having a bad day Ordered Pad Thai with chicken medium spice was not too hot but enough heat. Also a Bang Bang shrimp as an appetizer. Good amount of shrimp it was lightly battered and crispy. Solid food for a quick bite or a carry out.

Spring rolls (should be 2, but I was hungry before the picture.)

This is my second time at Basil Bowl, thought I would try something different. When you walk in it is very bright because of the floor to ceiling windows with a very nicely painted white feature wall. You order at a fast food style counter with a menu above, which is pretty common now. Since it was raining out a spicy Ramen sounded great, so I ordered the Tom Kha Ramen with chicken and a side order of spring rolls. The woman behind the counter gave me a cup and told me to pick a table. Just a couple minutes after sitting down my spring rolls arrived piping hot with a traditional sweet Thai dipping sauce. They were pretty average spring rolls, not the best I have had, but not bad by any means. About a minute or two later my Tom Kha ramen bowl shows up looking very inviting. At first glance I was excited because the broth has the traditional red hot and sour looking broth. I dove right in and to my disappointment not hot (spicy) or sour, with the exception of the lime I squeezed in. The noodles were chewy, but clumped at the bottom and seemed packaged. The chicken was pretty good, but it is hard to screw up sliced chicken in soup. I did not finish my bowl, which is highly unlike me. Overall, I will say the place has good aesthetics. I had a curry dish last time that was good, but would not get the ramen again. Service was fine, but I left pretty bummed about the ramen. Thai food and ramen are two of my favorites and I had higher hopes. For $22 I hoped for a little bit better. I may give them a try in the future, but definitely not going out of my way to stop back.

Great and easy order at the counter place. Pad thai was solid!! Very fast service. Seating is kind of limited so that's something to keep in mind!

I wanted to like this restaurant but it was just so-so. This is a fast casual place where you order at the counter and they bring your food out to the table. My friends were only meh about what they ordered, Basil fried rice (bland) but very large portion! She took most of it home (to add a bunch more spices etc). The Pad Thai with chicken was also pretty bland. I ordered the Tom Yum Ramen, it was kind of sweet and not as flavorful as I expected. The chicken was super dry but the noodles were okay. One unique thing is that the restaurant sells Thai(?) snacks (i saw a bag of chips?) and maybe drinks that I haven't seen other places. The restaurant was pretty clean and busy so I'm glad others might enjoy it but this is a pass for me.

Drunken Noodle

Dined in for dinner and had a pretty good experience. The interior was simple, cute, and organized. Once we placed our order, our food came out fairly quickly. I love that they have to go containers near the pop machine, along with extra utensils. The drunken noodle was okay. A bit oily at the bottom of the bowl, but the portion was huge. We also got the basil fried rice, which was okay. Definitely will come back to try the pho and/or ramen.... and the Thai tea!

I had been visiting Matsu-Chan a few times a year since 2009 when I was a university student in the…read moreJapanese [language] minor program and a lot of my classmates would also frequent. After graduating my girlfriend [now wife] and I would make it a point to try and eat at Matsu-Chan when in the area, even after our first kiddo, and eventually our second. Last year before one of our trips to the area my wife let me know that they were under new management and when I looked at the new menu, I was saddened that all of my favorite items were no longer present, and it seemed that my beloved little slice of Japan was now "just" a ramen shop. While my wife loves and can handle ramen and the broth, I would typically get the different rice bowls, or other entrees because while I love me some good ramen it doesn't work out well for me with the hour or so trip to the area. We'd get some rolls, takoyaki, and other appetizers to share around the table before digging into our main entrees. With the increased prices, and fewer options, I will end up going to any of the multitude of places [Aji-ten is usually our #2] to get my kick. I'll miss the little shop and the times I've had, like perusing the manga while waiting for a table. I wish the old owners the best, and the new management as well, especially if it was a familial transfer, but Matsu-Chan is not for me anymore. My wife will eventually get up there and let me know how it is, but for now, I'm just happy that a little bento shop opened near my workplace run by two first gen transplants, so I can at least get my fix without the drive.

Others following us added their names to the waitlist. The restaurant is small with just a handful of tables. One chef, it appears, prepared all the meals. I barely glanced at the menu; I already knew I was having the ramen. The only question was which one. My friend selected the eel bowl while I had the miso pork soup. The latter was served with sliced pork, bamboo shoots, fish cake, and seaweed. The broth was full of flavor; I enjoyed every slurp. I appreciated that the meal was sizeable and inexpensive - I was able to stretch it to two meals. We did not linger given the number of people waiting.

We were in the mood for some good ramen, and that's exactly what we got. We started with some steamed dumplings that were pretty solid. For our entree we split the tonkotsu ramen and a few rolls. We really liked all of these and I can't wait to try more things on the menu. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and had great recommendations. The atmosphere was moody in a fun way. Definitely check them out!

The servers were very courteous and always smiling, looked nice in their all black shirt, pants and apron. Modern interior ... elements of wood, vinyl red upholstery, and lots of japanese lanterns hanging by the sushi bar and kitchen area. Lots of elbow room and proportional height of the dining table. And in each table, they would place on top of each sushi plate a thick paper napkin, and chopstick with their logo printed on the front. Very hot water is served in a ceramic sake cup. For a group of three, we ordered the highly recommended Tonkotso Ramen $18, Stir fry noodles $16, and Chicken Katsu Curry Bowl $17. There was a strange smell of the bowl used to served the stir fry noodles and it tasted bland .. but for Ramen noodles, I very much enjoyed enjoyed eating the thin noodles garnished with chashiu, soft boiled egg, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, nori and corn - the only downside is the broth was easily absorb by the noodles so you might need to order extra broth for additional $5. The breaded chicken breast is good in proportion enough to feed three and the curry sauce was ok ... maybe a few pieces of carrot would have been great. I do commend how they prepared the egg and created a very nice plating of it on top of the rice. At first, we hesitated to dine in because of the reviews like slow service but actually it seems that the food and drinks were served more or less 10-15 minutes. Just about right when you want your food to be prepared by them the right way. Free parking. Dining area is warm so don't bother wearing a thick jacket inside.

Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.
