I really wanted an Ube latte float but they were out of the Ube paste to make it. Luckily they still had the Ube soft serve. So happy there's a Matcha Maiko in Duluth now! I got the Maiko Special with ube, which was a great choice. I definitely want to try the hojicha soft serve flavor next time, or even ube swirled with hojicha. Only con about this location is that there aren't very many tables when it gets really crowded, and the vibe and decor in the Doraville location is much nicer with the booths. This place is a gem for matcha lovers like me! I went today (Saturday) for the first time and it was packed with people ( the store is pretty small). I got the matcha soft serve in a cup and kind of regretted it at first because they gave it to me in a paper cup, not the plastic cups I saw in other reviews. I think I ended up getting less than if I were to get it in the plastic cup or the cone so I think it's more worth it to get it in a cone if I'm paying almost $6 for a soft serve. The soft serve itself was really good, I loved the balance between the bitter matcha flavor and the sweetness. I like Cafe Maiko a lot! Their matcha is rich and flavorful, and their matcha ice cream is just okay (Cafe Mixx has the best matcha soft serve in my opinion). I also ordered boba with my matcha latte, and I'm pretty sure they used crystal boba, which I didn't enjoy, so I wouldn't recommend adding their boba. However, their chicken karaage was very good; when I went a few years ago, they served it with wasabi mayo, but a few months ago, they just served it with regular mayo, which wasn't as good. The prices are a bit expensive but typical for a cafe, and there's free parking. The cafe is super small, so when it gets packed, there's barely any room to walk past people. A local ice cream eatery that specializes in matcha ice cream with some incredibly unique flavors for one creams (Lao Gan Ma, sesame, jasmine, Thai tea). I liked their matcha soft serve but it is a little strong in matcha compared to other matcha soft serves I've had across the country. Thus if you like a stronger matcha bitterness, then this place is a 5/5 for you. we also tried their taro, sesame, and lao Gan ma ice cream. Taro: Unfortunately tasted more like vanilla. I was not impressed by this flavor. It failed to have that taro cream punch at the end. Would recommend this store revisit this and blind taste against a vanilla ice cream to see if they can taste the difference. We served this at a party and everyone thought this was a purple vanilla. Sesame: Actually well done. Tasted like a sesame ice cream! Probably their second best flavor. Lao Gan Ma. This. We got it because the idea of a savory ice cream sounded intriguing. Unfortunately I don't like flavors like salt caramel or sea salt dark chocolate. Salty meeting creamy never did it to me and it was that factor that made this ice cream more weird to me than enjoyable. It's an ice cream flavor that is fun to eat a spoon full of, but not fun to eat a whole cup. Would recommend bringing friends to help you split this. Come here for the Matcha. It's a strong matcha. I frequent the Matcha Maiko in Doraville pretty often, but during COVID, I found myself at this location more. Matcha Maiko in Atlanta began releasing limited time release soft serve flavors in 2020 and for the sake of refreshing social media posts, I did it for the gram and tried a lot of them. I haven't been inside this location yet since it has been closed for dine-in due to COVID. But I came here and tried black sesame and milk tea soft serve swirl with boba and the ube soft serve with crystal boba. The black sesame flavor is so potent that it overpowered the milk tea flavor in the soft serve. I was a bit disappointed in the blandness of the boba themselves - tasteless, only good with the soft serve (barely). I could have done without the boba. The crystal boba is so much better - the crunchy consistency with the ube soft serve was not only Insta-worthy but also a great combination. Not a fan of how different people make prettier or not as pretty desserts - if I'm paying so much for the soft serve, I would definitely prefer if it looked picture worthy. They do offer samples if you're questioning the flavors of the different soft serve, which I find to be a nice touch. My favorite flavor so far has probably been the ube soft serve - and glad to see I can get it in a pint from both locations. You can order soft serve with boba, specialty sundaes with the limited release flavors of soft serve, and other menu items that aren't available in Doraville. Some flavors are also limited to the Duluth location that you can't get in Doraville. It keeps you motivated to come back to either location depending what flavors you're looking for! I would come here more if the prices weren't so much for a sweet snack, but they are definitely filling like a meal, so I guess I can't complain. read more

After finding out that a second location opened, I immediately wanted to try the soft serve ice cream. Due to the pandemic, the employees take your order at a front window; there is no dine-in or outdoor seating. In this plaza, there are several other bakeries and cafes, so this spot was easy to miss. Their menu includes more flavors, including black sesame and taro, in comparison to the other shop in Atlanta. Only certain flavors come in a swirl, but the employee offered to swirl the matcha on top of the black sesame in a cone. As everyone already knows, their matcha is premium; this isn't your typical vanilla-diluted matcha, you can actually taste the bitterness of the powder. The black sesame was extremely fragrant, and reminded me of the taste of black sesame porridge. Even their cone is surprisingly crisp, flavorful, and exudes the aroma of freshly baked goods. Good place to get your matcha-flavored sweet fix. This is actually my second encounter with this chain; I first experienced it a few years ago when vacationing in Honolulu with my family. I must say, even though it has its own storefront with interior seating, this location is underwhelming compared to the Matcha Stand Maiko in Honolulu. You would think it's consistent across different locations if it's a chain, but the Maiko Special is less appealing here. The red bean had more of a jelly consistency than solid red beans in syrup texture. The matcha flavored soft serve also seemed less strong/flavorful? Don't get me wrong, it's still a great option if you love matcha and live in the area. I also like the revolving seasonal flavors they have, since it adds variety to an otherwise consistent menu. This wouldn't be my first dessert place of choice to return to, but it's pretty good for what it is. I tried the durian flavored soft serve during my visit here, and it's pretty accurate. Has the durian flavor without the strong smell, which is great. However, at the time of writing this review, I think it's already been displaced by the next seasonal flavor.
