Sitting here on Amtrak train 332 at ABQ station on my way between NY and LA. We had about 30 minutes here, so I jumped off the train in the rain and ran up the block to Silver St. Market--nearest place with takeout vegan food. Grabbed a Mata G Protein Sampler and Asian Salad. Wasn't expecting much from a grab-and-go, but this food is fire! Rich hummus redolent with smoked paprika, lemon and tahini, ultra-fresh tabouleh (is that cardamom in there?), umami-bomb tofu salad and quality spiced olives. Just WOW! Dipping some Albuquerque tortillas into this deliciousness--can hardly wait for the salad at dinnertime where I'll be somewhere in Arizona. Mata G, you saved me from another mid vegan train pasta. Someday, I'll be in ABQ for longer than 30 mins, and first thing I'll do is seek out your restaurant. You're doing it right! read more

We were happy to find veg options in ABQ and ate lunch and carried food out for our trip to White sands. We got the tempeh roll, the pretzel roll and a couple of salad rolls along with the borscht and a nice not too sweet mango lassi. Everything had flavor and tasted fresh. We even got a taste of the rice they were making The downside is that food was pre-packaged in plastic and cold and had to be microwaved. Their website does not indicate that. I think it would be better if they clearly indicated that . We did not mind it given we were on the road.And we reused the packaging a few more times before recycling. I would recommend this place to any vegetarian/vegan travelers going to Albuquerque read more

I used to love Mata G when they first opened, but paying $17 for a "salad" is quite ridiculous when it's all filler lettuce. Their salads used to be $14 just last year and had more of the other ingredients besides a head of lettuce, I guess I'm done picking up salads here (sadly). As soon as you walk in you're greeted nicely, and the first thing you see are open air fridges full of pre-made delicious looking food from Indian, middle eastern and American cultures. All the food here is vegetarian, and the owner always works there and greets you and tells you about his food with a passion. He himself is a vegetarian for I believe he said 40 years! He is very hands on and has always been there when I've walked in to get meals and is very quick to help you pick something that you'll love. My favorite item on His menu was the tuna salad sandwich and also his salad dressings especially the Asian one were so good that it made the salads super delicious. It has a cute ambiance too for being an express / to go type of place. The restaurant has limited space but they make good use of it and there's usually enough tables available. read more

We came here on a cold Friday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised at the number of vegan options in place. We went for the Lebanese and Indian bowls and while both of them were delicious, it's worth noting that almost all of their meals are pre-cooked and frozen unlike other places which cook them for you. I couldn't speak more highly of the staff though. They were friendly, courteous and kind enough to warm up our food and also set up seating for us outdoors while checking with us multiple times. In addition to the food, we also ordered the mango lassi and strawberry lassi and were also gifted with a book that gave us wonderful insights into the organic food scene within New Mexico. read more

It's early. I pre-ordered delivery. It's been a rough week, can't sleep, and don't want to cook. Loss does that to a person. I wanted something vegan and the boyfriend wanted something vegetarian, we both wanted healthy food. I've had my eye on Meta G for some time now. One hash-brown burrito with cheese and mild green chile, pipping hot, nicely rolled, with a clear nutritional menu taped to the packaging. The bag it came in recyclable. Another Mexican tofu scramble burrito with jalapeños. Also finely rolled. Warm. Perfect label. Both were under $9. Delivery was $1.00. With tip we paid $21 and some change. But again, now is the time of big tipping. The burritos were not excessively big like we are use to in New Mexico, especially when we are paying $8 or so a pop. Also, it isn't very user friendly to sub green chile instead of jalapeños. For those reasons this gets a 8/10. Delivery was WAY faster than expected though. Wasn't supposed to be here till 10:30am but showed up at 10:10: CHOICE. Definitely worth trying their whole menu. Super vegan and vegetarian friendly. Fast. Fresh. Food. read more

I usually get my MAta G fix at the Triangle in Cedar Crest. Located inside the grocery store, it's convenient and hey, for me, it's a life saver. I grab my Asian salad or tofu sandwich on rye (yummy yummy ) and off I go. Their vegan options are not only healthy and calorie-thoughtful but very well balanced. Did I mention delicious? Yes, everything vegan at MAta G is delicious. Last but fir sure not least, cookies. Vegan cookies that are gooey, soft, moist and decadent ....it should be illegal. Quick and healthy vegan food at its best! All food is grab and go, however, they will heat up any of the items if requested! No seating inside but there are a couple of tables outside if you aren't looking to zoom off quickly. All tables were occupied when we got there but the gentleman behind the counter kindly set up another one outside for us!! What we got: - Mexican tofu scramble burrito - Asian bowl - ALL OF THE VEGAN COOKIES. Really delicious food. Usually "quick" vegan food means fried and extremely processed, this was NOT the case. The Asian Bowl veggies were fresh and burrito had so much flavor! Now the cookies... wow! By some good fortune, we were given the option to try all of the vegan options (gifted to us by the owners son who also owns the furniture and jewelry store next door)! Being from a small town in Georgia, we have little to no option for vegan treats (or food) so this felt like a luxury. Visiting from out of town, my first concern is always finding decent vegan places in town. So I was looking forward to trying out Mata G as reviewers have noted the variety of options. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me. First off, the concept seems to be that meals are prepped each morning, boxed, and refrigerated in the cooler at the storefront. You "order " by picking what you want from the cooler, and can have it microwaved for you. So essentially, everything is to go/microwaved, and not made to order. Which would be fine, but 2 meals, 2 drinks and a cookie ran $50. That $6 cookie better be the best cookie I've had (it wasn't) On the plus side, my wife got the Indian platter, which she liked, and the unsweetened oat chais were quite good and flavorful. The ginger molasses cookie was decent, but not appropriately priced. And unfortunately, the Moroccan bowl I got was bland and the texture of the veggies definitely tasted microwaved. The couscous had gotten soggy from the gravy of the curry as well. While the menu looks great on paper, I feel a lot of the dishes would benefit from being prepared fresh, or kept warm. If you're in a rush, I would say you can pick up a similar microwavable meal from Trader Joe's, etc on the go for less and have similar results. read more

Listen...I've been in ABQ for a year now and have been HUNTING for a decent vegetarian/vegan restaurant that also has breakfast options and I was BLOWN AWAY by Mata G's. My partner and I split the Tofu burrito and the Chickpea burrito and I'm not a huge fan of tofu but it was so delicious. Neither of us could decide which one was better and I have spent my entire week dreaming about those burritos. We also got their peanut butter cookie and the chocolate walnut and I was brought back to my childhood with one bite. It's so hard to do a vegan cookie justice and I cannot wait to have them again. Wow! If you haven't tried Mata-G's yet, now is the time. We are on a road trip and decided to stop in to this place to grab some healthy alternatives to the usual truck stop fare. We left with a bag full of goodies...a tofu salad sandwich, a beet salad, the micro green quinoa salad and some tabbouleh. We threw in a couple of nirvana cookies to round off our order coz everyone needs a little something sweet, right? :) Holy Moly! Everything was insanely delicious. Our rest-stop luncheon turned into a taste bud love fest! We shared the tofu sandwich which was so flavorful, creamy and savory (bravo...on the lettuce placement, no soggy bread!). The beet salad was full of freshness and the dressing worked so well with all of the crunchy veggies as well as the mild goat cheese. The tabbouleh was out of this world: I'm in love with the total live-ness of each bite of cracked wheat, parsley, lemon, cukes, onion and mint lightly tossed in lemony goodness. The nirvana tahini cookie with cherries and chocolate chips was so delicious! Every meal is full of love at Mata G's! I could go full blown vegetarian if I had access to this fine fare everyday. We were greeted by a very friendly owner who explained all of the dishes very thoroughly. I ordered the Lebanese hot meal, which was delicious. My wife ordered something and it was a little too spicy. The owner took it back and brought us a new meal along with a little extra bonus of hummus, .pita olives and vegetarian tunafish. It seems like the business model is focused on pre prepared lunches and breakfasts but they always have one hot meal of the day that you can pick and choose from a small hot section. Mata is so welcoming and such a genuinely nice person. When we came in she walked us around and showed us all the options in refrigerated section and told us what they were. She also explained what all the fresh hot food of the day options were. I loved the light pinkish-purple yogi tea and the Kibi cakes. My girlfriend loved the green chile spinach pasta.
