Grabbed a Mata G Protein Sampler and Asian Salad. Wasn't expecting much from a grab-and-go, but this food is fire! Rich hummus redolent with smoked paprika, lemon and tahini, ultra-fresh tabouleh (is that cardamom in there?), umami-bomb tofu salad and quality spiced olives. Just WOW! Dipping some Albuquerque tortillas into this deliciousness--can hardly wait for the salad at dinnertime where I'll be somewhere in Arizona. Mata G, you saved me from another mid vegan train pasta. Someday, I'll be in ABQ for longer than 30 mins, and first thing I'll do is seek out your restaurant. You're doing it right!

We came around 3:30pm so we could catch the masala chai happy hour. I love masala chai and rarely have the chance to get freshly made dairy-free chai. I was disappointed basically from the first moment after walking inside. The server greeted us by announcing, "We are out of vegetables today." I didn't know how this was possible; eventually, she explained that they had run out of the "veggies of the day" that come with certain dishes such as the yogi plate; they were still able to provide vegetables in other dishes like the kitchari. But I was shocked, since I love vegetables, and their veggies of the day are so prominently advertised. I asked if the other location had vegetables available today. The server was unable to tell me. We decided to place our order anyway. I had some questions about the baked goods, since I rarely get the chance to have desserts that are vegan and seed oil-free. I was curious if any of the baked goods was entirely oil-free or at least free of coconut oil. The server seemed very unmotivated to help me figure this out. When I asked about ingredients, she just repeatedly pointed me to the labels on the cookies that denoted the type of sugar each one contained as well as certain allergens, but did not have full ingredient lists. I asked if the chef or manager might be available to clarify certain ingredients, only to be told that "the chef usually only works in the mornings." I was at a loss, and eventually, with some obvious reluctance, the server went into the kitchen to ask one of the cooks about the ingredient lists. The server returned saying "Yes, the majority of the items have coconut oil." Ummmm the majority? Which ones, exactly? At this point, I gave up and just did not order dessert. I tried to order an iced chai which they were out of. I ended up getting a hot chai as well as kitchari and dal. The chai was pretty average. It wasn't particular spicy nor particularly hot. The kitchari and dal were actually incredibly delicious. It's rare to find a restaurant that doesn't use excessive salt; these dishes were perfectly seasoned with warm, nourishing spices and very little (if any?) salt. Even the fact that they were served basically lukewarm didn't detract from how much I enjoyed them. This place seems truly special and I don't know if my experience was an exception. I really wanted to love them, but they made it pretty difficult, despite having great and healthy food.

I say unusual because the food is a cut above what you would expect ...this place has live jazz on Tuesdays. It's fairly small but the food and coffee are fabulous. He made a bowl for me with pinto beans, organic squash, delicious pork, with some cheese on top. Very flavorful. The coffee was basically a cappuccino. Very good. On my way back I can't wait to try his ribeye steak and a world famous margarita. It says in here he tales credit cards but he doesn't. However he tales checks and cash. It's always build a bowl from La Finca. They have local, organic, farm to table ingredients. The staff is incredible, helpful, and always so welcoming. They make great suggestions and offer advice on what's been popular or is new on the line. They have a rotating selection of seasonal vegetables and local meats. It is a very small space, but they have great outdoor seating and they really make it work with what they have. They temporarily closed a few years ago and I was sincerely devastated. They have since come back better and stronger, with a cheese shop just down the street. I'm so excited about their success and look forward to eating there every chance I get.
