What a beautiful place!! The remodel is fresh light and airy with beautiful art work that gives the space an elegant but warm feeling. The food and service truly felt like fine dining at its best!! I ordered the ribeye served over a flavorful red chile sauce and it was absolutely incredible. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and full of flavor. My Manhattan was divine and our dessert was the perfect ending to an already memorable meal. You can tell there is real talent and thought behind every dish coming out of this kitchen. A colleague and I made a reservation here for our last night in town for a work trip--it has an unassuming look from the outside but when you walk in, there is a high ceiling dining room with the kitchen visible as well as a mezzanine that you enter with stairs on the right. The menu is listed in progressive (smaller dishes to larger dishes starting with the appetizers then the entrees). As a pescatarian and dairy free diner, my options were limited but the dishes I ordered, the shrimp ceviche and ruby trout, were delicious -- I will note the tostadas that came with the ceviche was chewy and there was more corn than I felt like was necessary. The trout was cooked perfectly and had crispy skin the way I like but also a little more corn than I would've liked. My colleague who ordered the pork chop said it was the best pork dishes she has had ever. Something worth noting. The service was great and I appreciated how the person who brought us our dishes reminded us what we ordered and what was included. The biscuits are a signature dish that is so good but that is just the beginning! We ordered the duck pastrami our of sheer curiosity and it didn't disappoint, flavorful and tender. Sadly the food was just okay. My expectations were high since the restaurant had James beard notoriety. Items were cooked well in their textures but flavors were flat. Each dish needed more acidity or more fat or more spice in my opinion to make them memorable. For example the trout fish had no flavor but only the accompanying rice salad but there wasn't enough acidity on that and the swish or blackberry on the plate wasn't adequate although it could have served that purpose. Zucchini had fresh oregano that overpowered everything else and the tomatoes got lost and more radishes were warranted to make it balanced. Cannoli also fell flat. A great idea but needed another component like spice or smokiness to make it better. The tuxedo cocktail was a good sip but was a small pour and became too sweet needing more black sesame or tart acidity rather than the sweet acidity components being too many. Service was attentive and aware of timing but apologized that my items took too long. Overall disappointed for the price point so I couldn't make it a recommended spot. read more

Mesa Provisions is a more upscale dining experience in Albuquerque, NM. If you are staying on Central and looking to treat yourself, head here. I made reservations at the restaurant and we wanted to sit together as a party of 6 but they could only do a party of 4 and party of 2. I was hoping they could work something out but even when we arrived, they were adamant that they could only do 2 and 4. My colleague spoke with them and we ended up being seated in the front bar area. I'm really happy we could all sit together but the front area is much plainer and bare then the dining area. Once we got over that little bump, we were chatting with other patrons and friends of friends. We all ordered various cocktails and drinks off the menu. Many of us ordered the Lorax which is gin, genepi, rosemary, and pear. I thought I was going to like it but I could only take a few sips. The waitress said that if I didn't like it, she could find something else but she didn't ask me what I thought and there wasn't really another drink that I really wanted to try. I ordered family style for us. We ordered the following: Green child and sharp cheddar biscuits served with red child honey butter ***** $9 | It comes with two biscuits. If you're ordering as an appetizer, you can split each biscuit in half. If you don't want to share and everyone wants their own, make sure you place enough orders. The biscuits came out warm with crunch on the outside and soft in the inside. Scallop Crudo was served with passionfruit, coconut, fresno pepper, mint, and cilantro***** $20 | This dish is incredible and the presentation is just as fabulous. The colors are so bright and I could have eaten the entire dish. This was my favorite dish of the evening. Tangerine Salad comes with little gem lettuce, pipian verde, queso fresco, watermelon radish, avocado, pepitas, lemon salsa, and sesame *** 1/2 $17 | This salad was pretty good and solid 3.5. Smoked Beet Tostada was served with pecan salsa macha, sweet potato, radish, and cilantro ** $16 | I read reviews that said this dish was amazing and I was seriously underwhelmed. It was too salty and when a dish is too salty, you lose me. Duck Pastrami was served on a sweet potato fritter, green chile, apple butter, apple sauerkraut, and creme fraiche **** $19 | This dish surprised me as it wasn't on my radar to order but someone at the table wanted to order it. So glad we did! King Oyster Mushrooms are served with celery root, white beans, wine-braised cabbage, fried onions, and maitre d'butter *** $36 | The price is quite high for this dish. It didn't hit for me but I know others enjoyed it. Redfish Veracruz is served on top of tomatoes, spanish olives, capers, potato, and cilantro **** $44 | I cut a piece of fish and one potato and really enjoyed my bite. I didn't put any of the sauce or olives or capers. One friend thought the dish was too salty but she put the sauce on the fish. Another friend did what I did and enjoyed the bite. I think that the sauce made it overly salty but if you kept it simpler with just the fish and potato, that's where the magic happens. Steak Frites is an 8 oz wagyu flatiron steak served with chimuchurri and parmesan shoestring fries $52 | It's hard for me to rate this dish because in the group, there was a request for the steak to be well done. I was a little stressed but was going with the flow. The dish was served charred. The meat was so dry. I was really really sad. I think that had we ordered medium rare, the dish would have been incredible. The chimichurri was nice and I really liked the parmesan shoestring fries. Boneless Beef Short Ribs was served in red chile braised, creamy grits, queso fresco, and pickled tomatillo ****1/2 $52 | This dish was delightfully delicious! Everyone really liked it so much there was nothing left. Let me know what you think! Reservations are strongly encouraged. This was my first visit to Mesa Provisions, and we decided to celebrate two birthdays here. Some of our party arrived before our scheduled time of 7:45 and tried to check in. We were told that all members of our party needed to be present before they would seat us (posted on the website). We were waiting on one straggling member. We had a party of 6. Thankfully our member made it in the grace period and we were seated. The restaurant is a nice, swanky place. I like their decorative touches. We were greeted by our server and he took our drink orders. I had read a previous review here that they don't serve iced tea. I asked anyway, and he told me they do not. Tea may seam like a small thing, but there are no other restaurants I can think of that doesn't serve tea. I almost always order tea to go with my meal. We all opted for the tap water. We ordered the biscuits, and we enjoyed the explosion of flavors in them. We placed our food order. The server was very good about clearing and restocking our utensils. Our food was out shortly thereafter. Everyone very much enjoyed what we ordered. I ordered the Halibut, but I felt like my portion was a touch too small. We considered the dessert menu, but opted for ice cream down the road instead. This restaurant has a city feel to it, and the best comparison I can give it is to Los Poblanos. I like the farmhouse feel best of Los Poblanos, plus their tea is divine. read more

My wife and I were welcomed by three people with terrific inviting smiles. We didn't have a reservation, they found us a spot the bar. The bartenders were busy busy making drinks and taking care of the people around the bar. Our waiter/bartender greeted us, gave us the lowdown and didn't hurry us. The vibe is a laid back cool. We ordered the biscuits which of course has to have green chile, I mean we are in New Mexico. They were fresh and straight out of the oven. I've could have had ten, but I only ate one and it was the perfect size. My bride ordered the paperadlle pasta, as soon as she had her first bite remarked how fresh and delicious the dish was. I ordered the halibut and it was cooked to perfection. It sat on a saffron sauce that was perfect. Saffron can over power certain dishes and it was the perfect balance. Made a reservation for our Anniversary so we could finally taste the chef's creations. Upon arrival we were not greeted or asked why we were there. The host (a petite young darker woman) just stared at us. I had to let her know we were there for a reservation and at that time she prompted us to follow her to our table. Once seated our waiter came by to offer us refreshments immediately and also brought out some water while we perused the menu. I opted to try their Biscuits for my appetizer which was absolutely scrumptious. The red chile honey butter was a great addition to the already scrumptious biscuits. My husband had the smoked trout tostada to start off with - he insisted I try some but I was reluctant because I don't like seafood but I obliged and it was so full of flavors and it tasted so delicious I was absolutely stunned in a good way. Moving on to the entrees I opted for the Smoked Half Chicken that came with duck fat flour tortillas, pintos, pepita crema & a cabbage slaw that was absolutely perfection. Everything on that dish came together perfectly and complimented each other very well. The flavor on that chicken was so rich and delightful and not dry at all. I devoured it all. Hubby opted for the Day Boat Scallops that were sitting in Masa Grits with Bacon Vinaigrette, Mixed Mushrooms & Sugar Snap Peas. I was once again prompted to try this dish because my husband was very impressed once again with his selection. I will say that this dish was super creamy and flavorful and the scallops were cooked to Perfection. An amazing dish with very complex flavors that mesh perfectly together and dance in your mouth with excitement. Alas it was the end of the meal and we were feeling quite full so we were not planning on dessert. Our waiter who was super attentive and amazing thru the whole service mentioned that because it was our anniversary the chef wanted us to pick a dessert so we chose the Coconut Tres Leches that is made with Masa, Lime & Chica Morada. The dessert shocked us because it was not made the traditional way using the traditional ingredients so we were a little apprehensive but we dove right in and once again - everything on that plate just blended perfectly together and was an absolute explosion of flavors in your mouth. First I have to say hats off to the chef. The chef at this restaurant besides being so innovative is an Expert at his craft and his vision has an artistry quality and his food Excels far past many fine dining restaurants we've been too. I thoroughly enjoyed everything we tasted today and that is so impressive for me because I am truly a food snob and dislike so many things and the fact that I tasted 2 seafood items and loved the dishes - that completely phased me. That's food prepared by a talented chef putting together amazing ingredients to make it all perfect. Overall we enjoyed our Anniversary very much, the restaurant was clean and cute and our waiter was absolutely amazing and so attentive. Everything came out like clockwork and the execution of the service was perfect. My only small complaint would be that we were charged for the dessert that I assumed would be complimentary based on the words exchanged with our waiter but maybe that is something we misunderstood. I went in to try the new location and it's basically still the Zinc space with all of its goods and bads. It can be loud, it's nicely decorated, and so on. The hostesses were all very nice and friendly. I got the pear salad and the smoked beets which was plenty of food for one. We shared the green chile cheddar biscuits. The pear salad and biscuits were delightful. I was a bit surprised by the heat of the ancho streusel. It overwhelmed the flavor of the smoked beets and goat cheese. I was expecting more of a smoky flavor and less heat from the streusel but overall the dish was tasty. However, the rest of my experience that evening can best be described as very strange. Apparently they don't have iced or hot tea which was a bit of a surprise. That's really not a big negative though, the weirdest weird was the server. He spent the evening focused on my male friend, pretty much ignoring me to the point where even when he took my order he was mostly facing away from me. It was the oddest experience I've ever had. I asked my friend if he knew him and the response was maybe he recognized him from the old location. I have no explanation for the behavior, the only thing I did was try and order iced tea! Made me wonder if there was some assumption about who was paying the bill (I was, so he would have been wrong). He also never told us his name. Anyway, super odd experience, if the management happens to read this, you may wish to remind your servers that they shouldn't ignore the women in the party. Mesa Provisions is in the old Canvas Artistry digs in Nob Hill. That is, if you remember when Canvas used to be in Nob Hill! It's a nice place, reservations required. Although, you may gamble on bar seating. Which, is what my friend and I did on our visit. We managed to get a reservation at the bar for two. Interestingly enough, even with reservations being required, it is fairly casual environment. I was a bit surprised, but also thrilled, because I arrived in my gym clothes! It was a last minute spur of the moment decision to go, and we were able to get a reservation 30 minutes from when we decided, LOL! We sat at the bar, shared an appetizer, bottle of wine and a dessert. The in house sommelier helped us with our selection of wine for the evening. The food was quite tasty. It was a nice time! The ambiance is elevated and upscale, a credit to its now multi-level design and our table had a captivating view into the kitchen. This attention to detail extends to the service, where the staff remains superb - attentive and accommodating. Despite the incredible ambience, the food was the heart of the experience, offering some of the most adventurous and outstanding cuisine I've had in Albuquerque. The menu provided multiple delicious experiences (including for both our gluten-free and vegetarian diners), allowing for a truly shared experience. Highlights of the meal included the perfectly cooked rare rib-eye, the charred turnips appetizer, and the Cauliflower "Bolognese". The adventurous drink pairings, like the non-alcoholic Galvanina sparkling beverages and the Double Green mocktail, were equally well received. The evening's only minor missteps were a reminder of a familiar regional truth. The halibut, while not without merit, fell short of the high bar set by the rest of the menu. Similarly, the chocolate sorbet, while not particularly off-putting, lacked the unforgettable flair that defined every other course. These small disappointments, however, could not diminish my overall sense of excitement that such a remarkable and inventive restaurant option now exists in Albuquerque. Mesa Provisions is tucked into an unassuming storefront with unassuming signage that belies the thoughtful, creative menu and service awaiting you. As many have already said, the green chile cheddar biscuits with red chile honey butter were a delight. The biscuits could stand on their own but the smoky sweet spice of the spread made them sing. The half chicken was epically portioned with a side of cabbage slaw, two homemade naan-like tortillas, and a cup of yummy beans. I would happily eat that dish multiple times a week. The surprise star of the night was the turnips with crispy shallots, chile oil, and aioli. I preferred the turnips without the sauce, which speaks to how well the chef can prepare a humble root vegetable. The only down note of the meal was the lackluster dessert, a slice of gateau marjolaine. Despite the many layers, it was devoid of flavor. The exception? An overly bitter and grainy lemon curd that dotted the cake. A sad end to an otherwise amazing meal, so I won't hold one misstep against the overall experience. read more

I want to eat here daily, but it's kinda hard to get a reservation. Even on a random Wednesday night, we often end up having to snag the final spots around 8pm. Make plans in advance! (I say, to myself) The service has never been anything but incredible, the waitstaff is clearly well versed on everything being served. We've eaten at the tables and the bar - the service has never waivered. At the bar we loved being able to chat with the fun staff while we ate and they polished glassware. The atmosphere is cozy and clean, the restaurant is narrow but long, giving it a wonderful 'discovered' hole in the wall feeling. The wine menu and local beer selection are great, and staff is wonderful at pairing. Our most difficult decision when we go is how to not order everything. I adore that this is a seasonal menu so we are constantly going back to try new things. I've never been disappointed by a single dish, including the desserts. read more

A hidden restaurant in Nob Hill with a beautiful interior. It's a smaller dining space but it's an amazing experience because the staff are incredible and the food is amazing. You get to try local New Mexican dishes with a modern flair. Standout dishes for me were the mushroom enchiladas, the rib eye, and the kale salad from the fall inspired menu. The entire meal was served at a really good pace. The staff were watching for when we finished current dish before serving the next entree. We were given new dish ware for each entree. The mushroom enchiladas was smokey with a little spice and we couldn't get enough of the cream sauce. I would put that on bread and eat that all day. The rib eye was perfectly cooked, tender and packed with flavor. Definitely give this place a visit next time you're in Mesa Provisions. You'll have a great dining experience. Finally we were able to make it to have Chef Steve Riley's food. A little sad we hadn't came sooner! The ambiance was gorgeous, the service was something you definitely do not see much of here anymore, he was very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu! It felt like a night out of Albuquerque. We sat upstairs and we were able to over see everything. It was beautiful! The food..... I have nothing wrong to say. Everything tasted phenomenal, the flavor, the texture, the combinations were absolutely well put together. The scallops were like no scallops we had tasted before. The Salad so light as delicate as which it felt in every dish. Not to filling, light, flavorful and just damn good. I want to eat the smoked beet tostada every day forever. It reminds me of burning piñon in the air, both intoxicating and subtle. It doesn't smell or taste like that, more just the feeling. I love this place! It's very comparable to a nice dinner spot in Los Angeles. The menu is simple. The service is great. The place is small-ish. Reservations recommended. Parking - street parking is free. I don't think they have a parking lot. Food - I would order the biscuits $8 again. Everything about it was great. The honey butter was tasty. The Mesa Burger $17 was surprisingly very good. The patty was cooked well and to my liking. You can feel the spicy kick, but it's not too spicy. The bone-in bison ribeye $72 was the most expensive item on the menu. It's also bison meat, which I've only had maybe one other time in my life. I did not like the combination of flavors here. The cilantro lime butter was enough in my opinion. I thought the beans and yam were good, but they should have put the salsa macha on the side. This was our first visit to the new location. What a beautiful space. Can't wait to see what the Cellar Bar becomes. We had outstanding service and the food was outstanding as always. We shared the Sunchoke Salad which had great textural differences in the ingredients and a delicious golden beet mostarda sauce on the bottom. I got the duck pastrami which was served on a sweet potato cake topped with apples and red cabbage sauerkraut. The pastrami was well flavored and lean and the ingredients played off of one another beautifully. My husband got the green chile cheeseburger which was cooked perfectly to the desired temperature. The burger itself was delicious as were the toppings. One of the best green chile cheeseburgers I have tasted in a long time and it just overtook my favorite from El Monte Sagrado Anaconda Bar. We finished by sharing the new goat cheese tart with cherry compote which was amazing. We also shared the dessert wine pairing which was spot on. Love the space which is calmly hip. The service was likewise low key and efficient. Where I was a little disappointed was with the food. Some very good dishes, some OK dishes, and some pretty significant misses. The scallop crudo with coconut milk and passion fruit was tremendous. The persimmon salad was not: smearing the plate with goat cheese and then putting ingredients on top, particularly since none of these particularly pop, led to a really unimpressive ensemble, that needs serious re-working both in terms of how it eats (it's just weird, frankly) and how it tastes. The main thing is that persimmon just doesn't do much. It's slightly sweet and crunchy but it can't really stand on its own. It's there to add to something else and here it was supposed to carry the load (which it just can't do). For the mains, both the short rib and the trout were very good--though not transcendental. Finally, the deserts were bordering on bad. One was offered on the house: the chocolate cake really needs some work as to this palate it tastes like a boxed mix (though I know it's not). And the persimmon cake (yup, persimmon again) which tasted nothing like persimmon (unsurprisingly) and was like a very sweet brick of coconut. I don't like making deserts and respect those who work on this end of the menu. But there has to be something to it besides just being sweet. I don't know who is doing the pastries here, and it may have just been bad luck, but the two items we tasted were just not on par with the rest of the meal. read more

We spent the better part of a nine-day New Mexico trip in the Santa Fe area, which obviously has a dining reputation that far outstrips that city's small size. But the single best dining experience of the trip was, without question, at Mesa Provisions in Albuquerque. Overall, Mesa ran up the score in just about every restaurant category: food (by far the most important, of course), service, atmosphere, etc. Like so many 21st-century higher-end restaurants, Mesa Provisions lends itself to sharing smaller plates of food. In such places, that allows folks like the wife and me, who like pretty much everything, to double the variety we'd otherwise get from a menu. And the kitchen here manages that difficult balancing act of creating dishes that feature a wildly different set of flavor profiles that are still unified by common threads like technique (here, purees are big as a base for dishes) or plating style or ingredients. We started off with the Beet & Orange Salad and the Charred Cabbage. Mesa has a meat-heavy menu, but the chef, Steve Riley, is a wizard with vegetables. The salad was delicious, but the cabbage dish, the flavor profile of which is hard to describe but had some Sichuan elements to it, was the best veg dish I can recall having in a *long* time--tremendous but balanced flavors as well as great textural contrasts. Meat dishes--pork belly, lamb meatballs, and beef cheeks--were superb as well. The lamb meatballs were heavily Middle Eatern-influenced and explosively flavorful (a couple of tiny quibbles: the meatballs might have been just a teensy bit over, and the dish as a whole was *extremely* garlicly (and I like garlic a lot)), the pork belly the most Southwest-oriented item of the night, and the beef cheeks achieving some Central-Europe-style comfort-food satisfaction. Very different dishes, but all clearly the product of a singular culinary mind. All three were excellent. Everything was beautifully plated and wildly colorful--a feast for the eyes, too. A simple bowl of peach ice cream closed it out wonderfully. The lead server, who I think was Maddie, couldn't have been better: attentive throughout the meal without being officious, seemingly sincerely happy to help with lining up the dishes for us, recommending a wine or beer and offering tastes (another tiny quibble: a few cocktails would be nice), pacing everything smoothly, and so on. A team effort, though--everybody was welcoming and pleasant. Pretty sure the chef himself brought out a couple of the plates--I always like when a chef humbly does that without calling attention to himself. Mesa Provisions doesn't shoot too high with the atmosphere and decor--it's warm, spacious enough, and pleasantly lit--generally perfect for the relaxed, upscale-casual vision here. And it's difficult to believe it's only two years old--it has the feel of a longtime neighborhood classic. This whole experience clocked in at $150, tax and tip included, a great value in 2023. No-brainer five-star review, and I don't write a whole bunch of them. read more

All the food, except the trout was basically chili weird spicey laden. Two birthday celebrations there were ruined as the food was meager and overspiced. The blackened chicken dish was charred and dry. It was returned and not charged. Service was excellent.Ambiance not great. Art on the walls downstairs looked like stencils of stars, the lights on the ceililngs were covered with what looked like giant potato chips. SO sad. Every bite of food was heaven! I mean this sincerely, things we would never have thought of, their clever chief blew our minds. So glad we indulged in many small plates to sample more! The atmosphere is casual, but upscale at the same time. Take a date to impress them, but also have your dinner out with your bestie here. This is punctuated by their outstanding service. Holy cannoli. Ambiance of this place is amazing. Great art to stare at while you savor every bite. My bartender was so knowledgeable and perfect with her pairings. Every step of this meal was phenomenal. Tried the roasted turnips, BBQd beets, short ribs and parsnip purée. Meyer lemon cake for dessert. Wine pairings for all!!! read more

been there multiple times before. all really good but this place has gone down hill since expanding to the new location. asked for soda water and was given sparkling. over dressed asparagus salad. asparagus salad was huge stocks, instead of ribbons, which was hard to eat with the wilted salad mix. dry chicken and underdone burger read more

Excellent service and delicious food. A highlight was the smoked beets dish--it had a slight smokiness that blended well with the goat cheese and sugary pecans. Everything was beautifully plated. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. read more
