We were definitely very impressed by this place! We had not been here but we could see it while we were sitting on the patio over at Mama Mia's a couple weeks ago so I decided to give them a try when we went out to lunch the other day. I had looked at the pictures on their Yelp page and saw the ones for pork belly and was pretty sure that was what I wanted to try. My husband got a chicken ranch sandwich. The girl behind the counter said for $2 more he could get fries and a drink with it as a lunch special! I said sure. He was really impressed with it. It was even bigger than it looks in the photo. I was happy with my pork belly nuggets. I got the larger $15 size and couldn't even finish them all. They made a great dinner with a side of rice that evening. The girl behind the counter couldn't have been nicer. I'm sorry I didn't get her name. She checked in with the a couple times to make sure we were happy with our choices, which we definitely were. I thought the wine bottle with our cold water was how cute idea and the water tasted delicious. I don't normally drink a lot of water in restaurants but I had two glasses of this. Having passed by Mastiff Kitchen numbers times, and noticing the $5 Happy Hour Menu along with the all night Monday night Happy Hour on drinks, a friend and I went there after work on a recent Monday. Anyway, when I arrived, just before 5:30, the parking lot was full, but I found easy street parking on the nearest cross street. I arrived first ,and was kindly greeted by staff. It is kind of a fast casual restaurant where you order at the counter, but they ask you to wait to be seated, and also do sometimes stop by your table to see if you need anything. They seated me at the last available table, which would have been comfortable enough, but the door was open, it was a bit cold, and our menus and napkins were blown all over the place. They have a decent sized $5 happy hour menu, and we placed our orders before the end of Happy Hour (6 PM). I was disappointed that they were out of pizza by the slice, as I had decided on the pizza square and the rustic tomato salad. Anyway, between myself and my friend, we shared several of the other items on the $5 menu. The staff was friendly and gave my friend several tastes of drinks before he decided on the hard kombucha. I chose the Pinot Noir. We shared the smash burger slider, the crispy chicken slider, rustic tomato salad, a sausage, and wings. Everything came out hot and fresh and it was really good. I do wish I had been able to try the pizza, but since I wasn't in the mood to order a whole pizza, I skipped. All in all, it is a decent happy hour with a great value. I'm not a huge burger or wing person, so it may not be my favorite place, but I thought they did a good job with everything they had. I may stop by again sometime for pizza and salad. read more

Amazing place to come and relax with friends, the food and service was both pretty good, I came in with a few buddy's and we all ended up with burgers, I got a beer as well which was pretty tasty and we also got a side of buffalo chicken fries to share, everything was good minus two key things which is sadly why I couldn't give this place a 5 star review. My first complaint was the size of the patty, by the time I got to the end of the burger there was no more patty, the burger was super super drenched with aïoli sauce a little more meat would've been nice. My second complaint was the chicken within the Buffalo chicken fries, honestly disgusting in my opinion I spit it out tbh tasted super chewy and I wouldn't recommend it. We went to Mastiff from a recommendation YELP as our plans change and we were in the area. As we walked in we were greeted by a staff member who gave us a friendly run down on seating and ordering. Many beers on tap, we ordered 4 different beers and 2 kombuchas. Beer were cold and clean tasting - often time with many beer choices lines aren't always clean. The selection was great with local and semi local choices. Kombuchas were ice cold and delicious. Menu choices were good pairings for what you'd expect from a good tap house and very well priced. We have very tasty chicken wings, excellent double smash burgers and a crispy chicken salad. All well made, very fresh and timely delivered. We highly recommend Mastiff! read more

We were looking for a chill spot to catch the SDSU game and this place had everything we could ask for. Huge beer selection and all week happy hour already make this spot worth it, but the service and food put it over any others. The smash burgers and pizza are top notch here! 5 Stars based on the Mush Love pizza!!! Would def come back for more (and to try the burgers) are you kidding... My friend and I were seated at the bar and our server was so nice! No wait time for water refills and was checked on :) When the pizza came out, we were questioning if it was a deep dish but it's just thick crispy dough! Pleasantly surprised by this place! We visited this location several times years ago when it was Craft Kitchen, which was not memorable, so for some reason we were expecting the same for Mastiff. Wrong. We tried the guava wine cocktail, garlic maple Brussels sprouts, burrata margherita pizza, hatch chile sausage, hot honey garlic wings, and gochujang wings. Except for the hot honey garlic wings, everything was beyond amazing. The only thing wrong with the hot honey garlic wings was that the flavor was pure garlic and not hot honey. Still good though, and both sets of wings were crispy even while doused in sauce. Our joint favorite part of the meal was the Brussels sprouts, which were super crispy and sweet without being TOO sweet. On the burrata margherita pizza, it was covered in cherry tomatoes and they were cooked to perfection. We sat at the bar and the service was casual and easy-going. All of the tables were full when we arrived (probably because of happy hour) and empty by the time we left, so I'm thinking even at peak hours it's not too crazy in this small location. Delicious pizza conveniently located in La Mesa. I've only ever ordered takeout, but the ambience inside the place looks chill and laid back, a place to hangout with friends to enjoy a beer and some bites. First of all, the crust on these pan pizzas are sooooo delicious, it's a crispy cheese crust. I've tried other pan pizzas/Detroit style pizzas in SD but have found the cheese crust flavor in other places to be way too overpowering. Not at Mastiff though, flavor is just right. I have tried their Choke n Chiken and That's My Boy - both highly savory and delicious pan pizzas. They're soooo good, I wish the pizzas were bigger!! That being said though, 2 slices fill me up plenty, and for my husband he can do 2.5-3 slices in one sitting (but 3 is pushing it). I really enjoy that when you go pick them up, they take some extra steps to pack your order to make sure it's as enjoyable as possible. I've noticed that the team will spread some hot/fresh tomato sauce on top of the pizza and grate fresh (Parmesan?) cheese on top. It's such a nice touch!! The box the pizzas come in are very sturdy, which is important since these pizzas are pretty thick. I also appreciate that Mastiff has a parking lot, makes picking up much easier. This was our first visit to Mastiff Kitchen. Thankfully, they weren't extremely busy on Labor Day holiday for dinner. We dined with a party of four and looked forward to our meal since reading the favorable reviews since opening their La Mesa location. We ordered the following items: double smash burger with shoestring fries, pork nugs, & pig fries. We also had a glass each of their Sauvignon Blanc & Cabernet Sauvignon wines which were happy hour priced all night. All food dishes were served promptly, hot, well portioned, and tasty. I've always wanted to try this spot located in an unassuming location in the middle of a neighborhood and it did not disappoint! I don't have crazy expectations from a place that serves the standard American pub grubs and libations, but this place has a great atmosphere. The lady who helped us was so sweet and pleasant. The restaurant is clean and the vibe is casual and relaxed. The food was out of this world. It's definitely heavy food, but they have tons of lighter and even vegetarian options. I have to say that the garlic maple brussel sprouts are TO DIE FOR!! The Mastiff fries has me dancing on my seat because not only is it flavorful, it is also GENIUS. I've never had fries cut this way, but it makes me wonder why not? The way these fries are engineered to be loaded with creamy sauce and toppings makes every bite a party in your mouth. ( we split the burger fries etc last time-- which was amazing also) WELL the pizza tonight under the unexpected extra sauce on top was so burn that pieces and 90% of the bottom crust were not edible. Literally chard so bad that the taste was something I have never experienced before. I'll be checking my pizza before leaving from now on if doing takeout and I hope they do the same. We're locals and I can tell you this pizza is consistently delicious. Mastiff has become a weekly visit either Thursday or friday. The service is always on point! Parking during busy times can be hard but the parking lot across the street is always open. We go during happy hour, get a little heirloom tomato salad, full pizza usually pepperoni and an appetizer either the wings or the burger. If you're wondering if you can take your kids we do every time. My son plays the gumball baseball game machine and whatever sweet employee working the register likely gives us change for quarters with a smile. Again its a smaller place so plan for a little wait on a friday or saturday but pizza has a crispy outside while still deliciously soft. So worth the wait. The owner is always there and so cool! Introduced himself multiple times and you can tell he genuinely cares about his employees, restaurant and frequent customers. Cute little spot in La Mesa that looks like it could be filled with little leaguers eating their weight in local pizza and sliders after their Saturday morning games while the parents enjoy a beer or two from an impressive selection. Since we don't have little leaguers and were there on a Friday, we settled for a couple of bar seats and enjoyed the happy hour selections available. My husband had a couple of beers while I opted for a glass of wine (decent selection and good prices!) and we split the My Boy pizza and some Mastiff Fries. Both were delicious and we didn't leave any crumbs behind. The pizza was a spicy pepperoni but not too spicy. I'm not a huge fan of sauce and even though the pizza sauce is on top, it's not overwhelming. The "kind of Detroit style" pizza crust is lovely. Though a thicker crust, it's fluffy and not dense. Bar service was great - we were well taken care of even with a full restaurant in the throws of Friday happy hour. This place is definitely going on our list to visit again. This is not a dog friendly place! You have to sit outside and there's no covering. I came in after I picked up my kid from school, and she wants some snacks. We had our dog because we assumed with the name, it was a dog friendly place. It's not. They told us to sit outside, and we did. It was hot and there's so many flies. That it wasn't really a good experience. But our food and waiter is amazing!! I got the Julian apple cider, which is amazing!! The brussel sprouts are delicious and my fave. It was great new when I learned that Mastiff Kitchen was coming to East County, San Diego: La Mesa in fact. They have a great happy hour were many items are $5 each. For example, the Rustic Tomato Salad and the Crispy Wings I enjoyed with the spicy honey coating. I also had a slice of the sausage & peppers Detroit style pizza for $5 as well. If you get whole, it's $5 off the pie during the hours of happy hour from the 3 pm to 6 pm. The wings were terrific! They were indeed crispy and meaty as well, but what really stood out, was the tasty hot honey garlic. The dressing was marvelous. They were not overly spicy but just right. They were great wings. The only bummer is that your $5 only gets you three wings. Four would be just right. The Rustic Tomato salad was delicious. The fresh herb and balsamic dressing was quite good, and I loved the heavy amount of freshly grated parmesan cheese on top. I did however feel that the tomatoes needed to be halved one more time for ease of eating. I know the salad is "rustic" but the tomato slices were just to big, in my opinion. The Detriot style pizza was very good. It was thick and fluffy, but what I really liked was the cheese crust that ringed the perimeter of the pizza. That not only brought on some great flavor, but texture as well. I loved the house made sausage. It was very flavorful. The pizza was a winner. The place is very casual. Love this place! Been here twice now and each experience was great. Some of the food we've ordered the last 2 times were Crispy Brussel Sprouts, Andouille sausage, pork nugz appetizer, smash sliders, and the following pizzas: That's My Boy, Sausage & Peppers and Meet Meat. All of them were delicious but we all agree That's My Boy pizza was the best! This restaurant also has 30+ beers on tap and served pleasantly colder than other bars/restaurants we've been to. Pairs well with the pizza and sliders. We were seated right when we walked in and given menus to look over but you have to go up front to place your order, which isn't a big deal. Food and drinks were served pretty fast and staff checked in on us several times to check if we needed anything else. There are several TVs to watch the football game. The restaurant wasn't too loud and you can still hold a conversation with the people at your table. The parking situation isn't too bad. There's a small parking lot and plenty of street parking. I only got to take 2 photos because we got too excited and started eating right away. I'd highly recommend this place if you haven't had a chance to try them out. read more
