The temperature was cold but not overly so thus older patrons can come in and not worry about the temperature. My egg drop soup and crab lagoons were very tasty! The sweet and sour chicken was deep fried and bland. The service like the others mentioned was inattentive probably because most of the servers were on their phones. Our waitress was however ok. I guess the service style puts people off but that's just their culture - speedy and stay out of others' spaces. We lived in LA for about 15 years and this place felt like it belonged in Chinatown. I would say it's good. It's not great and it's no where near terrible. We used to come here years ago when it was another name and the menu was very different and loved it. I have been looking to try it, but finally went tonight. I would say most of the menu is more authentic cuisine with things I would never dare try, and a small section in the front of more American style meals, but if you want rice, you have to pay extra because it doesn't come with your meal. I ordered the Mongolian Shrimp and it was good. Nothing wrong with it except shrimp was overcooked and had tails still on and there was absolutely nothing else in it except for onions, scallions, and sauce. Not much flavor except, well, the onions. My husband had basically Cashew Chicken and really enjoyed it. It's big and clean inside with pleasant music playing and service was fine, with the exception of my meal being brought out a solid 5 minutes before my husband's. First off, this is the "same" Masterpiece that's on Buford Hwy. I don't understand when one is closed and when the other one is open. We live near the JC one but drove all the way Buford Hwy to find that one closed then drove back to JC and found this one open. I'm not sure how their schedule works, it's not listed on their schedule and not worth the effort. Food is so overpriced and overly numbing with more MSG than I can handle (I can eat pretty numbing but this is too much). We ordered one dish that comes with intestines and some other things ($30) but it was mostly spam. For $30??? Rice is not complimentary and costs $1/bowl. They just ask you if you want rice and will not tell you it costs $1/bowl. Their kitchen is also extremely slow. If you want to add dishes later, they'll tell you it'll take forever and that it's better to order all at once. My family and I visited when there was a tropical storm and rain was leaking through the roof where my dad was sitting. They didn't move us to a different table and just said no big deal basically. Been excited to try this place after hearing it has gotten some acclaim and recognition. I popped over from the office during lunch and ordered an egg role, an egg drop soup, and a lunch shrimp lo mein. I'm sure there are more interesting and better things on their menu, but figured I'd wait to try their shareable entrees until I came with my wife another day. The food was fine, but not great, and seemed clearly a step below Pearl Lian across the street. The service, although not awful, was pretty disappointing as well. Grabbed a table for one and the server delivered my water and a menu. After dropping these off I was completely forgotten about. After a prolonged wait, the server walked by after delivering a check to another table and said, "oh!" and then asked for my order. Mistakes happen, but not a great first impression. The egg drop soup and the lo mein came together, and the runner walked off without a word. By the time the server finally came around, I was already eating and decided to disregard the egg roll, thinking they forgot. Right when I was finishing my meal, and preparing to request the check, the server delivered the egg roll and didn't address the timing. Overall, none of these things are a huge deal, but combined with decent food at best, I'm not in a tremendous hurry to return. read more

I was so excited to see that a new Chinese restaurant had opened in this spot (since I had frequented the Chinese restaurant that was located here before, which was different). We visited on a Sunday evening, and the restaurant was fairly empty - service was prompt. The interior is classy and spacious. The restaurant is quite large with a full bar as well. The menu was expansive and had a Sichuan influence. For food, we ordered: A1 Szechuan Bean Jelly (川北凉粉), G12 Eggplant with Garlic Sauce (鱼香茄子), D10 Fish Fillet w. Pickled Cabbage & Chili (酸菜鱼), F29 Sizzling Beef with Black Pepper (铁板黑椒牛). Note that rice was $1 per bowl rather than a family-style bowl. We also got a pot of chrysanthemum tea. The jelly was a great appetizer and had a subtle mala and vinegar flavor. I often order eggplant at Chinese restaurants, and we all thought that this was the best garlic eggplant we've ever had. The garlic flavor was strong, and the sauce was delicious but not oily. I loved that it had a good balance of salty and sweet. Another favorite was the pickled fish soup. The serving was large (could feed 4-5 people), and the fish was fresh. The beef was just okay - I couldn't really taste the black pepper, but it was otherwise cooked well. This review is applicable to both the Duluth and Suwanee locations of Masterpiece. My husband and I have eaten several times at each location. There are several dishes that are delicious, but alas, now inedible for me. Their prawns in garlic sauce is probably one of the best dishes I have ever tasted. What is the problem then, you ask? The chef does not properly clean the prawns! They are filthy with the prawn excrement cooked right onto the prawns! Sorry, but this was totally disgusting to me and we no longer eat there!! This is very sad because with some effort to food hygiene, we would be glad to return. We found the above on several occasions-- it was not a one time thing! The service was uneven as many of the waitstaff do not speak fluent English. So, we had a friend who writes in Chinese write our orders out for us! The Duluth location has no ambience! The restaurant overlooks a cement plant and the decor is pedestrian at best. The Johns Creek location is much nicer. read more

Came here for Saturday lunch and it was all delicious! The restaurant is spacious and beautifully decorated. For lunch it was relatively quiet and the service was great. The food was all delicious, but there are multiple levels of spicy on the menu, and when a dish has 5 or 6 peppers next to them they mean business! I eat meat but my favorite dish was the vegetarian tofu slice, so definitely a good place for vegetarians too. Prices are a bit higher than typical Chinese, but the portions are generous and worth it for the outstanding food. read more

Masterpiece was once the crown jewel of Johns Creek [and BuHi...]. My dad raves of the days where the portions were amazing, the food delicious, and the service incredible. Unfortunately, today, none of that is true. 夫妻肺片 portion is significantly worse than its heyday. It's at least still good. Truthfully, it is the only great dish that I've had here. Cumin lamb and their rabbit dish both tasted incredibly old. I'm near certain the meat is past expiration, but they chose to serve it rather than throw it away. Service here is below par even for authentic Chinese restaurants. One time, we ordered our beloved 五更肠旺, and the server didn't say anything. Please understand that Chinese restaurant menus are massive, and sometimes it's easier for the server to simply say they don't have an item if they don't. What does this idiot server do... Without asking us if it's okay, she substituted the significantly inferior 毛血旺. Man, this dish was the definition of mediocrity. When we asked her about it, she defiantly, and with a nasty attitude, said "我们没有五更肠旺!" ("we don't have [that dish I wanted which i'm always scared to order with my 老外 friends because it sounds scary or icky but is actually incredibly delicious.]"). What the f...ruit. I told my Pastor i'd curse less.. Anyways, how stupid is this? Why tf would she not let us know that they don't have the dish that we tried to order? Why tf would she be defiant and angry when we were noticeably disappointed? Some great restaurants are polarizing at the 3.5 stars level. I can assure you that this restaurant is not a great one. I was thrilled to finally enjoy the wonderful food of Masterpiece at their new Johns Creek location, which is the building formerly occupied by Wei Dao and Liu Fu. It's a great space which has been slighlty updated from its previous occupants. The large size will make even the most nervous COVID-era person comfortable dining in. They are in a 2-3 week soft opening period right now. The menu appears to be identical to the original Masterpiece location in Duluth. We ordered: Stir-Fried Green Beans Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce Stir-Fried Pork Belly Beef Chow Fun Potstickers Everytbing was delcious as expected. My favorites of the bunch would be the pork with garlic sauce and the stir fired pork belly. Excellent all around. The restaurant seemed to be only staffed by one cook and two wait staff, but they were doing a great job covering the medium sized crowd. Hopefully the staffing is still ramping up during the soft opening. Highly recommend Masterpiece to anyway who wants truly authentic Chinese Sichuan food. If you have a family member who thinks that means sweet and sour chicken, it's best to leave them home. Can't wait to eat at this new Masterpiece again soon. read more

I've only picked up food from here rather than dined in, but my hot take is it's the best hunan food around. Just knocking a star because of value: I do think it's on the pricier side. I love the cumin lab, tofu dishes and stir fried potatoes here. They have the traditional dry spice flavor that defines hunan cuisine, rather than the heavily saucy or numbing taste that most Sichuan restaurants abuse. The inside is never that crowded and looks very spacious whenever I go. Would like to sit down and eat it on the spot one day! read more

Payment system was awkward... waitress asked for a tip in front of us. Food was okay not over the top amazing. The chicken fried rice was simple and had good flavor. The tofu dish was a hit or miss for our table - you either loved it or didn't like it. It was a fried dish but, compared to most fried tofu dishes, the tofu was really soft/soggy in this dish. The Kung Pao chicken was fine - the heat was there but flavor-wise nothing special about it. The environment itself was well kept and decorated with traditional Asian symbols and statues. There is plenty of parking by the restaurant. They are open for dine in, but I placed a to go order. I made the order around 5 and it was ready for pick up when I arrived at 6:10. It was nice that I could look at the menu and place my order online via Cartana. There were many options to choose from for the dishes, a lot of spicy dishes since it is a Szechuan restaurant. Chicken with dry red pepper: it was just the right amount of spicy and not too many numbing peppercorns. Some had no chicken in it and it was just breading. Still tasted good though. Fish fillet: so there was two options on the menu, one that said hot oil base and one broth base. I had thought the hot oil base would be the spicier one with actual sauce. If you want the one with more sauce get the one that says broth. Overall not too bad, it was more mild spicy to me. It did take away from the dish that we found a wire inside :( but I know this can happen at times. Just be mindful when you are eating. Stir fried sour green beans: nice acidity and the spiciest dish we ordered. Perfect for pairing with white rice! Eggplant: very unique taste, not spicy at all. The sauce was delicious and would mix well with rice too. There is ground pork on top of each eggplant. Chairman Mao's pork: slightly sweet, definitely not a dish you can eat a lot of in one sitting. Maybe a different way of packaging is needed for take out, as the sauce/broth spilled all over :( Fried rice: it was just average. Not worth the $17 price tag. Our order did also come with 4 medium boxes of white rice at no extra charge. Overall, the dishes were more oily than I would like. Prices are a bit higher. Masterpiece has two locations. This location has nicer sitting area, Large tables, but higher price. A $13 dish at Duluth location costs $18 here. The service is terrible. There is only one waiter, one waitress and a bartender for such large area. We have to wait 3-5 minutes every time we need something. The waitress is extremely rude. read more

During our Christmas travel, we decided to try this restaurant. Firstly, super clean and well decorated. We were one of 5 other dinners there. We ordered the stir fried tripe, fish with secret sauce, and hunan tofu. We were hoping to have some really good authentic Chinese food. However it turned out to be a "meh" better than the average but not the grandest. The service however was, the reason for my one star. We had a American couple, across from us. The server was extremely nice to them. However when taking our order, she rushed us "saying she needs to go and take another tables order, to hurry up". My husband, asked her to be patience. This was our first time there; and we want to experience their food. She didn't take that too well. All in all, I would not go back.
