We needed a liner in one chimney, to meet the current code for the furnace, as well as extensive brickwork on two chimneys. We had a previous estimate by another company, which was considerably higher, and they didn't follow through with emailed estimate and photos as they promised. The company that replaced our furnace recommended ER Chimney. The chimneys were too tall, and the corbels on the top directed water right at the masonry joints. Bernie suggested that rather than repairing and repointing, he remove the top few rows of bricks, and finish it in a way that directs rainwater away from, rather than towards the rest of the chimney. We were pleased with the work,which he explained thoroughly. They worked for several days, cleaned thoroughly at the end of each day,and were careful about not dirtying the house when they did interior work. We were very pleased with the job.

I paid ER $135 to sweep and inspect my chimney. They claimed my chimney had cracks, gaps, damage…read moreto a "shifted" tile in the 5th row, and is unsafe to use, writing a $4775 estimate for repair. I hired a 2nd certified chimney company to inspect, without saying anything to them about ER's findings. This 2nd company found my chimney to be in perfect working order - and after I revealed what ER had claimed was wrong the owner came and looked at it a second time to be sure (for no extra charge), as did a carpenter. All these inspections verified my chimney is in perfect working order. Incidentally, there are only 4 rows of tiles, so obviously there can be no damage to a 5th row, nor gaps between the 4th and 5th rows of tiles as ER claimed, since no 5th row exists! Additionally, I was told in the follow-up inspections that my chimney, particularly the smoke box, still needs to be swept - and this was 3 days after ER had supposedly done so. 2 men from ER were inside my house "inspecting" while a 3rd man was on the roof to sweep. I was told he was in training although he was up there alone. I never saw any brushes, nor did they sweep the smoke box from inside my house. And another warning, which I learned the hard way: BBB ratings mean less than nothing, the best and only thing you can do is to ignore them. Despite submitting proof to BBB with pictures showing only 4 rows of tiles, and the report from the subsequent inspections that my chimney is fine shape (NOT in need of any repairs) BBB closed the case saying it was a "he said, she said" situation. So ER Chimney maintains their VERY misleading "A+" BBB rating. ER really deserves an "F-." BBB offered me an option to pay $75 and go into arbitration with an ER representative. Of course, I do not want to spend more time and money especially after I've already submitted all the proof that should be reasonably needed to show BBB that ER failed miserably in every way possible to render the services I paid for, that I deserve a refund, and ER deserves a much lower rating. So BBB failed miserably with their supposed mission of informing and protecting consumers. I give them an F- also. ER has refused to refund the $135 I paid for (supposedly) sweeping and their bogus inspection. Now I still have to pay a legitimate, honest company to sweep, and have already had to pay for the 2nd-opinion inspection. SO CONSUMERS BEWARE: Avoid ER Chimney Services!!! (also listed as ER Chimney and Hearth in Dundalk, Maryland) Also, don't trust BBB ratings!

I was surprised and little concerned that it only took this two-person team 15 minutes to clean and get on the roof to check things out. I was disappointed that they didn't clean the fireplace walls completely (see photo). In the past all of the soot would be washed off. I mentioned something to Tim and he had his sidekick come back to work on it for five more minutes. Still wasn't overly satisfied for the price I paid. $180 seems steep in the DMV region but to be honest I haven't researched other groups. Tim made some recommendations for a few repairs. I'll shop around though to get another quote or two. They want $375 to replace back wall and $375 to replace cap outside. Other chimney places hit me up

MHIC# 65416 nor its owner Gary Clift. Fire-Safe Chimney Sweeps, G.T. Clift Inc. is wholly dishonest, does not complete the work, will not return to correct their incomplete work, and blocks your phone number(s) when you attempt to work with the owner (Gary Clift) to receive a full refund or complete the service. First Warning Sign - Will not accept Credit Cards for services. With a Credit Card, you can dispute the Charges. Fire-Safe is then required to either complete the services or have the Credit Card Company refund your payment. In my case, I am out $475 (Check). I contracted with Fire-Safe to clean my chimney on 12/7/23, only to have the smoke back up into the house an hour after they left the home. I called Fire-Safe (Gary) immediately (12/7/23), Gary stated he would call back that afternoon, but there was no call Back as of 12/18/23. I attempted to call Fire-Safe on 12/18/23, to find my phone number Blocked by Fire-Safe. Second Warning Sign - When you call the Owner 'Gary' they Block your phone number on all their lines. Blocking the call is evidenced by the call going directly to voice Mail on the first ring. Clearly, there is no expectation of a 'Return Client'. When you call from a phone number Fire-Safe has not blocked, they answer immediately or quickly return the call. Yes, this is real and occurred on 12/18/23. Gary returned a call from my work phone within one minute of calling. Gary said he would call me back the following day (12/19/23) however, Fire-Safe has now blocked my work phone and will not return the call. Third Warning Sign - I spoke to Gary on 12/18/2023, he lied to me claiming Maryland Law prohibits Chimney Sweeps from going on a roof to clean the Chimney Cap. To verify Gary's assertion of a Law or Regulation against servicing the Chimney Cap at the roof end of a Chimney, I contacted the Maryland Department of Labor (MD-DOL) that regulates Maryland Chimney Sweep Contractors to ask if this was a Maryland law or regulation? The MD-DOL Employee stated that the Chimney Sweep was not being honest, that there is no such law or regulation, and to stay away. Sadly, this advice is too late for me. If you are reading this, it is not too late for you and your wallet. As of 12/19/23, there has been no response or contact from Gary Clift or Fire-Safe, and my 2-phone numbers remain Blocked. It could have been done on Wednesday, but it rained all day. The pricing was so fair that I didn't even need to negotiate. I had not looked into chimney repair before, but a bird entering your house like it's Santa will make you consider installing a chimney cap. Joe explained chimney caps to me like I was five years old, in the most respectful way. He explained how the chimney would need two caps because usually the furnace vents through the chimney. He explained how to check for myself in the basement. He was right. He also explained the chimney crown and that it needed to be replaced. I wondered how he could know that since no one climbed to the chimney during the estimate. I asked for pictures before the work started. The crown had cracks but served the house well for 80 years. He was right again. His team showed up, explained the scope of work, gently moved our plants out of the way, and got to work. We also had several bricks that needed to be replaced. That required the team to remove the broken brick, spread mortar, and install new bricks. They match the house well. I napped in front of the fireplace while they worked. I could only hear light tapping from the brick removal process. They sent photos while the work was in progress. Great photos that I will share with you below. Joe and his team exceeded my expectations. The problem is not our pilot or gas, it's the solenoid gas valve part that Chimney.com installed. (A master plumber has identified the issue 100%, but doesn't do gas repairs.) Since the whole device is controlled by remote, we know we did not break it--we never touched it ever, but the like-new fireplace did not come on this year. We were charged full price for the unit, which should have lasted for many years. Now Chimney.com is now wanting another $300 just two years later to repair. Paid a lot for a new unit. Chimney.com they says they are not responsible for quality of their products and will charge for labour to "evaluate" the issue. They act very folksy/ocal--until there's a problem, then they cut you loose. Be forewarned that you need to be lucky because they don't stand by their products sold. This feels scammy.
