My review of 58 Foundations on our basement dig-out project…read more Please be advised that 58 Foundations appears to operate in violation of home improvement regulations in the District of Columbia. Their contracts are legally deficient, as they omit both the salesperson's license number and the project commencement date. Furthermore, the District of Columbia Licensing Board (DCLP) was unable to locate a license for our specific salesperson or any other individual at the firm. It seems they don't have a licensed DC salesperson. Following a ten-month delay, the company proposed a change order that would double the initial project cost. This increase is a direct result of the original salesperson's lack of expertise and professional neglect. Additionally, the company proposed a solution that is illegal under DC regulations, and their internal communication remains highly disorganized. Under District of Columbia law, performing home improvement sales without a proper license or executing contracts without commencement dates and salesperson license numbers may entitle clients to a full refund of the contract price, regardless of work completion. I recommend that any parties engaged with this company review their legal standing regarding these practices. Please be cautious if you decide to challenge this company. Their management called and threatened us claiming that we will run out of money before they do.

I try to give folks the benefit of the doubt, recognizing that unique circumstances in a one-off…read moreproject don't always give a great sense of a company. However... we were led along by 58 for 4 months and told they would solve a foundation issue under an addition to our house built in 1982. The individual who came to our house seemed highly knowledgable and was confident that he knew the problem - he said that all other quotes we received were rubbish and didn't understand the issue. So... fast forward 4 months after a hassle of getting the right information to them for permits (seemed excessively long time, but ok, it's government). People who we've never talked to or worked with from 58 show up to do the job. They literally ask us, "what is the problem? what do we need to do?" First red flag. So we show them the problem that 58 has already done all the specs for. An hour later we get a knock and they call us to observe the problem, saying they cannot do the work because of the structure. They dug up a bunch of stuff and littered it around our yard (which, they said would probably happen but more frustrating that these workers never came back). We have to call 58 to figure out the problem (second red flag) and the person brushes it off like yeah already on it (ok then tell us you're already on it?). We continue to ask them for info for another month and it's well into winter now. We wanted to issue solved in the summer before the snow came. He finally gets back to us and says that they can't do the job and "are very sorry". That was it. We asked for the engineering plans to try and find out what the problem was. Never got those. We were never given compensation for them destroying our yard and not finishing the job. The best thing that happened is we got our deposit back. I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but I've never had a worse experience with someone providing a service. I'm a pretty chill person. But I'm still boiling about this a couple months later, so felt the need to write a stern review.

I contacted Value Dry via a contractor referral site where they had excellent reviews to waterproof…read moreour basement & install an egress window in our basement. It took them days to respond. That was the first red flag. When they did respond via the referral app, they said "Good morning, Thank you for reaching out to Value Dry Waterproofing, unfortunately we have been unable to reach you but will keep trying..." No one from Value Dry tried to reach me. That was the first real contact from them. According to the referral site, all contact should be done via the referral portal for everyone's protection. When I spoke to the person to make an appointment, they insisted that "all homeowners" be present for the inspection & that we needed to set aside 2.5 hours for it. They would not make the appointment unless we were willing to commit to those conditions. So Shane, their inspector came by, showed us movies to explain everything, then spent roughly 1.5 hours looking things over then measuring & drawing diagrams & working up a proposal. Then he sat me down to explain it all, go over the proposal & answer any questions. His initial "MSRP", that's what he called it, was for $31,085.25. When I balked, he quickly started lowering the price. For the egress window & well the price was $20,000!! He offered to price match any other offer we obtained for the waterproofing, which he managed to lower near $8,000 because we didn't want this or that or absolutely need this or that. I felt like I was at a car dealership & negotiating the price & options for a new car. Shane left me feeling like he was more interested in up selling us, than helping us solve our problems. He could fix our basement water issues but the priority was profit. Shane arrived promptly at 4:00pm & left at 7:30pm. We were flabbergasted that this company had so much time & effort to spend on this. Again, it reminded me of the time and effort it takes to purchase a car. Too much time, too much money, & I felt kind of abused by this company by the time Shane left. Guess what, we aren't hiring them. Caveat Emptor!! UPDATE: We have since hired another company that came in after Value Dry (see my other reviews to see who we hired) and they have excellent reviews (not just from me). Their salesman did a thorough evaluation, explained everything, offered a larger scope of work (comparing apples to apples) without trying to sell fancy unneeded add ons. Their price was still thousands of dollars lower than Value Dry. Their guys did excellent work. Whatever defense the Owner of Value Dry gives & does not want me to judge them by price or the amount of time their salesman (who was a gentleman) wasted, it ALL figures into a review. So again, caveat emptor or as Sy Sims used say "An educated consumer, is our best customer!"

Mike came out and gave us a very clear and honest assessment. After three additional quotes and some scare tactics from other companies, we felt the most comfortable moving forward with ABC. They came out one more time to run through the project and modify the quote before starting work. As for the actual work, Mike, Brittany and their team were fantastic to work with from start to finish. They were very responsive, communicative, timely, and professional. They offered a fair price and their assessment of our issue felt truly honest. Our quirky old house threw them some curve balls but Mike and his team finished the work promptly and efficiently. When we had a question, Mike did not hesitate to come back out to take a look at something the next day with no questions asked. Overall, this is a local family run business that clearly prides itself in their honesty and integrity. From our family to yours, we would highly recommend ABC to anyone with waterproofing needs. Your house would be in great hands. We will not hesitate to contact them in the future if any other issues arise. Thank you, ABC.

Hi Mike and Brittany,…read more I had been expecting water in my basement and needed to have waterproofing done on the back door and water was coming in at the bottom of the door. I thought it was coming from the cellar door so had that resealed. Water was still coming in, so I reached out to Mike and I sent him pictures of the problem and he was able to give me an affordable price. Come in today and the work was complete. I would recommend him to anyone that has waterproofing problems. Deborah
