It was not the largest buffet we have been to, but everything was just interesting and delicious. We tried few new dishes that we never had before. There was a chef making potato doses right there and they were as fresh as could be. My husband and I were asked what kind of bread we would like whether we would like all garlic Nan or plain or a mixture of both. tl;dr I've been going here for over a decade and the quality remains strong. Highly recommend a visit for good Indian food! My family has been going to Masala Art for over a decade, and the food quality is always excellent. They have a large footprint in Needham center with easy parking, including street parking out front and a parking lot out back. They're also right by the Needham Center commuter rail line for those coming in via train. The most recent time we visited was on a Sunday evening for my dad's birthday dinner (as a party of 4). The restaurant only had a few other groups present, and the relaxed atmosphere was pleasant. Though Masala Art is more known for their weekend lunch buffets, we always come for dinner. Across the table, we ordered the Paneer Butter Masala, Pav Bhaji, Madras Chicken, Chana Bhatura, and Tandoori Roti. Almost every entree comes with either rice or naan by default, which is a nice reprieve from the majority of Indian restaurants these days that charge extra for them. The Paneer Butter Masala was excellent, and honestly way better than any equivalent dish I've found in the Boston area. It was spiced perfectly, and had the right amount of creaminess (i.e. *not* too creamy). The Pav Bhaji and Chana Bhatura were also great dishes, with special recognition for the bhaji and chana themselves, which were also properly and flavorfully spiced. This is a higher end Indian restaurant for sure, all things considered, but the atmosphere is relaxed. The service is also prompt and detailed, and I always appreciate how Vinod Kapoor (the owner) comes by every table to ask how folks are doing throughout the meal. Overall, I strongly recommend a visit to Masala Art as well as to their sister restaurant Clay Oven in Lexington (which I go to more frequently purely due to distance). I'm surprised there aren't more regular patrons at either - I for one will be back very soon. read more

A bit more upscale than regular Indian Restaurants in the area, Masala Art offers a pleasant dining experience with good Indian food and nicely decorated ambience. We love their lunch buffets which offer a variety of options including made on demand dosa and bature, and freshly made naan breads served to the table. Service staff is courteous. They have street parking in front of the restaurant and a free 2hr open parking lot near the rear entrance of the restaurant. read more

It had been years since my last visit to Masala Art as I moved out of state. The ambiance is largely unchanged - simple and adequately maintained - and the service was good. I shared a dinner special not on the usual menu and we were disappointed. On my next trip I will order something from the usual menu and expect it will be at the high standards of previous years. Unable to give five stars when 3-4 is more accurate, but giving 4 stars because history is influencing my perception and I'm giving them the benefit of any doubt. I went during lunchtime with my colleagues and they had a buffet. The buffet had a couple options but wasn't very extensive. I ended up ordering the tandoori mix grill, the shrimp was pretty good in it. I also got a chai and didn't really enjoy it. Maybe because I am Indian, I expected the food to be a bit more authentic. My colleagues who did the buffet didn't really enjoy the food, it wasn't spicy enough. At the end we asked to have split checks and the staff gave us a single check and told us to split it ourselves. If you are looking for an elegant Indian restaurant serving delicious dishes then this is your place.

My carryout order number tonight was #35. I ordered butter chicken, tikka masala, and naan. I specified that the order be ready for pickup at 5:45. When I arrived at 5:40 the food was already cold after having been completed long before that. In the butter chicken, there were at least two chicken bones that were sharp and small and found while biting down. You should know that whoever did the pulling/shredding of the chicken was careless and could've caused serious injury. As for the food being cold, if it's going to be prepared much faster than requested, you really should call the customer to let them know. Personally, I will never be ordering from this restaurant again. For the price paid, ($24 for 12oz of chicken but mostly sauce), this food was mall food court level quality taste. I tried searching diligently for over half an hour for a functional email or contact us portal but those are broken and there is no way to leave a private review or I would've done so. I'm hoping you are able to fix these issues so that I'm the last customer who has this experience. read more

*Review from vegan perspective* So I've been here 4 times now. I've always gotten the badami naan which was sooo good. It's been awhile since I have been (like a year) and the menu looked updated, so I double checked w/ the waiter that the bread was vegan and asked if any of the breads were vegan and he said NONE were! Usually at least the chapati is (all the recipes that come up on google are vegan/non-dairy). I wonder if they put butter on all of them and aren't willing to not put butter on one to order. Idk I am super disappointed because I ended up just spending $17 + tax and tip for chana masala, which I can make at home. There are 6 vegan entree options which is ok but not great, and everything is clearly marked with a V which is fab. They have a full bar with lots of creative cocktails, 5 stars for the bar! All the courses showed up at the table almost at the same time. The holiday special dish was inedible and so were most of the items in their appetizer platter. Some of the worst 'Indian' food I have had in a long time. Calling this Indian cuisine is like calling McDonalds American cuisine. The food is bland flavorless and lacks any sort of authenticity. It is food made for American palate coupled with awful execution. It is one of the only Indian places around and it shows. It is a lazy imitation of Indian food. You make this sort of food in places with diverse options like NJ, Chicago or the bay area this restaurant will shut down within a month. We went there for a weekday buffet and the options were minimal. I am frankly ok with that - less options means the chances of them executing the dishes would be greater. But what I was subjected to was some of the most flavorless bland food I have eaten in my life. The chicken tikka masala had chunks of rubbery breast meat swimming in a tomato gravy which had no spice. The paneer was equally drab. The sad little chat station made me weep. The puris had long gone stale and were soft. The seekh kebab had clearly been marrinated in liquid smoke and were under cooked. The smoke was so over powering that you couldnt taste anything else. The worst thing is they were cold. The dal was cold and congealed in to a blob. The vegetable biryani/pillao thing was bad. In closing you are better off driving down the road to Trader Joes and picking up lamb vindaloo and palak paneer from their frozen section then spending your money at this place. read more

My husband and I ordered takeout from here, deciding it was time to give it a second chance. Especially because so many of our friends say they love it... They are more expensive than some other places (each item is at least $2-$3 more), but MUCH closer to our house. The food was fine - but it just wasn't as good as some other places we prefer.... We decided that we won't be ordering from here again, as we were just overly disappointed. This is by far the best Indian restaurant I have ever tried in the Great Boston Area. The atmosphere here is great, very Indian. My manager and I had samosa chaat, lamb Saag, Lamb kebab, and mango lassi. The mango lassi is tasty, very thick and the taste is balanced, not too sweet nor too sour. The lamb kebab is just amazing, really hard to describe how great it is. Both the texture and the flavor are fantastic. Will defiantly come back later to try the masala and biryani. I was really scared to try the spot based on the previous reviews but I'm so glad I tried it! It's in a great location, the indoor decor is pretty, and service is attentive! The servers were sweet and went our of their way to ensure we had everything. Now on to the food: We got the tandoor platter, butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, shrimp cocktail, bread basket (assortments of breads) , paneer , mango Lassis. Everything we ordered was Amazing! Specially the shrimp cocktail, I couldn't get over how perfectly flavored each one of the big juicy shrimps were. The cocktail sauce complimented the shrimp perfectly! Great lunch deals! You get a lot on the luncheon menu. The taste could use a little more flavor. For an Indian place I found a lot of what I had to be good but a bit bland and not very memorable. While it's tough for me to get Indian food during a workday lunch due to the food coma that often ensues, this place was great! I'm not sure if they only have buffet for lunch here, but since that's what the rest of my group was doing I just went with that (I know... if they're going to jump off a bridge, are you? probably). It was $14, which I felt was fair if you are utilizing it to its full extent (I sadly could not or else naptime at work), but they had decent options and were constantly bringing out fresh servings. As a human who likes to get my veggies in during the week, they had a hefty amount of flavorful veggie dishes and two main chicken tikka options that were excellent. The tikka masala wasn't too much stomach wise, for me it was not too heavy and punched a lot of flavor. This is an absolute gem of a restaurant, I am usually picky but this wonderful restaurant hits every detail perfectly. First of all the food is absolutely delicious, so full of flavor and spices, not to mention the portion sizes are large and filling. Also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options!! Second the service is impeccable, your water glass will never be empty. The workers are wildly attentive without being too intrusive.
