I adopted my best friend here in December of 2009 when he was six months old. Shadow celebrated his Barkmitzvah combined with a fun Superbowl Party in Feb. of 2023, where guests brought birthday gift donations. He's doggone charitable. Taking the donations to the MDSPCA, I was able to see just how awesome the staff still is, how clean and organized the kennels are, and just how beautiful the building is. The dogs awaiting adoption were clean and looked comfortable in their cozy kennels with toys, blankets, cots, etc. Of course, I wanted to take them all home with me, but Shadow's my bestest boy and being 13 1/2, he's my one and only for now. read more

My partner and I recently adopted two cats from SPCA Hampden, and we couldn't be happier. The staff was kind, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about the animals. The facility was clean, warm, and welcoming, and it was evident the cats were well cared for--many were in foster homes, which we loved to see. What really stood out to us was how thorough the adoption process was. They carefully vet adopters to ensure the best match for both the pet and the family. We appreciated the thoughtful questions and attention to detail in finding the right fit. Our two kitties had a wonderful foster, who we got to meet, first on a zoom call, then in person on the day of adoption, and we were given all their medical info, plus a solid plan to help them adjust to their new home. It's been lifechanging having them with us, and we're so grateful for the care and dedication of everyone at SPCA Hampden. Thank you for everything! read more

I'm very dissatisfied with my experiences here. I visited 5 days ago (which was a Thursday) to adopt a cat. Initially, things were good and I even found a cat I was interested in taking home. She was not listed on the website but was physically there in she shelter so I went in the room and met the one I wanted. I was told the cat would be going to foster care soon because she had been there for a month already. I didn't have everything I needed at home to leave with the cat that day, so I came back on Monday, after the weekend. On Monday, I was greeted by A LOT of elderly volunteers who had no idea what was going on. I understand the animals do not have holds on them unless they are already adopted but it was ridiculous that after 3 business days, nobody knew what happened to the cat. As I stated before - she was not on the website and had been there for a month. I checked the cats listed on the foster care board and she was not there so apparently she did not go to foster care. The easiest conclusion is that she was adopted by another family but nobody there seemed to know or care to confirm what happened. I'm leaving this review because this shelter does not answer the phone or return voice mails and enjoys having elderly volunteers at the front desk, tell people "I'm not sure, check the cat room" then the elderly people in the cat room say "I'm not sure, check the front desk" It's a lot of uncertainty and is difficult to navigate. If you are coming to get a pet, make sure you walk out with the one you want THAT DAY. read more

My pet had her surgery today at the spay/neuter department. Everything was wonderful. They were kind professional, caring. The price they charge is very reasonable. My dog came home with no pain. Their post surgery instructions were clear. I received pain meds fir her for the next days. She came home with a bone to protect the wound, which looks great. Thank you! read more

HIGHLY recommend. We utilized their low-cost spay/neuter service for our 9 month old puppy. Due to all things Covid, there was a queue/waitlist given the high demand for services. The staff that I exchanged emails with was clear and prompt with their communication regarding scheduling. Leading up to the date of service, we were asked to complete intake paperwork electronically and provide a vaccination record. This exchange was efficient and seamless. The location is very easy to find/navigate and there is ample parking onsite. The lot is also clearly marked so you know where to park for service drop-off. Upon arrival, we were asked to call into the office and they very quickly retrieved our boy. They also called as soon as he was up and recovering from the procedure. They emailed post-op/discharge instructions and someone also reviewed them with us upon arrival back at the clinic. They were very upfront about any optional/additional costs. I would recommend MDSPCA to anyone looking for low cost spay/neuter service for their pet. They were efficient (clearly they are well-versed in these procedures given the high-volume) and they were very safe regarding social-distancing and covid safety. read more

The SPCA is the best! The Falls Rd facility is very spacious and clean. The location is a bit strange as the turn into the facility itself is a bit nerve wrecking but that's not their fault! I pas the shelter every day I'm in Baltimore and one day I decided to stop in. Best thing I ever did. So I instantly fell in love with 2 beautiful Great Danes. I continued to check in on them and also stopped by but unfortunately they didn't become adoptable yet. One of the wonderful people that work at the shelter showed me the two cutest pups. I really, really hate that I have to be the first person to give this organization a 1 star, as I'm sure they really do wonderful work for the community, but... My significant other and I have been looking to rescue a dog for quite some time, and due to personal reasons were looking for a specific breed that doesn't necessarily pop into most shelters that often. We were therefore very excited that on a Friday afternoon, a dog we were very interested popped onto their website. Now their website is VERY clear about their adoption policy. Like most shelters, this is a first come, first serve facility, and it is written in all capitals on their website that that do NOT take holds over the phone for any animals. We got up on Saturday morning, excitedly double checked their website, and noted that the dog we were interested in was still located on their website. We don't live in Baltimore or Maryland, and so we left early to make sure that we were there when the shelter opened, as we anticipated there might be some interest in this particular dog. When we arrived, we were greeted by a very friendly employee, who again explained that once the dog holding area opened shortly, we were welcome to peruse the dogs to find the one we thought would be best for us and to grab a sheet of paper on the cage that we could give to the employees, so that we could meet the dog and potentially begin the adoption process. So we did as we were told, we walked into the area where the dogs were kept, and found the cute dog that we were very excited to meet and hopefully adopt. I took the paper off the cage, as was instructed by the staff, but right as I pulled the sheet of paper off the door, a man came up to me and said "are you planning on adopting this dog?" I said, "yes, I believe this is the dog we are looking for." He stormed off as his wife tried to calm him down. I returned to the lobby, anticipating we would go ahead and meet the dog and begin the process, but the gentleman was acting in a belligerent manner to several of the employees up front. He kept yelling, "we called ahead! We called ahead!" "We got here first!" Another one of the employees up front said, "Oh yeah, he actually did call us to let us know he wanted the dog." I exasperatingly argued, "But your website explicitly says you cannot call ahead." The employees did not seem to care (or perhaps they're not aware?) of what their website actually says. Once the employees indicated they were taking the side of the belligerent man, he grabbed the piece of paper identifying the dog from me, as the employees began to turn a cold shoulder to us. At that point, we walked out, incredibly disappointed that we somehow had been turned away, despite following the rules given to us from their website, and also from the initial employee who greeted us. To those interested in adopting from this organization, despite what their website says, you may want to actually call ahead to make sure they know you're coming to adopt a specific animal. If you're concerned about that, you may want to adopt from another organization. I'm sure there are some other great ones in the DC/Baltimore metro area. To the organization, this situation was really handled extremely poorly. Your employees explicitly ignored your own guidelines, and caved to a potential adopter because he was throwing a fit in your lobby. If your employees were not aware of what your website says about calling ahead, please educate them on your written policies to avoid this unfortunate and deeply disappointing situation from arising in the future. Otherwise for the sake of people who wish to adopt from your organization, please remove the wording from your website advising potential adopters that they cannot call ahead, and that it's first come, first serve, because sadly, in this situation, we followed all of the rules and got screwed. read more

I ahve absolutely nothing bad to say about this shelter. I am so thankful to have them in our community. I support them 150% and i am so grateful so many volunteers give up time out of their day each and every night to care for these homeless buddies. They take excelent care of them and make sure that you are a good fit for your new family member. They provide you with all information needed and put you through a briefing of owning the pet. The shelter itself is very well maintaned and clean. The animals have alot of space in there kennels and get to play alot. I adopted my best friend and loving daughter from ere back around christmas. I saw her face on the internet adn i just fell in love with her. i scheduled an appointment to come in and play with her and interact with eachother and it was love at first site. She is the sweetest, friendliest, well mannered animal i have ever had. she is a cuddle bug and listens very well. I absolutely adore Juno and i didnt change her name either when i adopted her. she actually answered to it very well and i thought it was cute... the only think i would like them to change is i think that when animlas are adopted just as an extra step of service for the animal i feel we should be contacted a few weeks to months after the adoption and have a pet counselor check in just to make sure everything is going the best it can and to check on the well being of the pet. to me it would just show me that the spca took the extra step.... either way, i would adopt from them again and i plan to in a bout a year when i move into my new home! but juno is not going anywhere she has a permanent home with me! read more

I could never say in words just how pleased I am with Maryland SPCA. But I will try!! After my husband and I had to put our beloved cat Bret to sleep recently, we were looking to adopt again -- our house is not a home without a cat. I went to the SPCA's White Marsh location where they have cats and kittens available for adoption. I saw a bonded pair of year old cats as soon as I walked in and I knew I had found our babies. I met them and knew I wanted to bring them home as soon as I could. Stephanie was the adoption coordinator who worked most with us and she could not have been more helpful and friendly. The next day I brought in my husband as well as the necessary paperwork and we were ready to bring our boys home. Conan and Stephen are our precious sweethearts, making every day an absolute joy for us -- and they seem to enjoy watching their late night namesakes with us too. :D Stephanie and everyone at SPCA are fabulous and I cannot thank them enough for taking care of our boys until we took them home. Clean, spacious, well organized and very professional. The animals seem to be taken care of meticulously. Each dog has a personality profile and detailed information. Consider donating to help out the less fortunate pups and kitties! Facilities and cages are clean, and there's space for the animals to move around comfortably. Admittedly, my exposure to the organization is limited, but for the work they do, I applaud Maryland SPCA. I went there to volunteer (found out you do that best, online). While there, I witnessed a little Maltese brought in, having been found traversing dangerous Druid Hill Park Rd. unattended. It just so happens I am looking to adopt a Maltese. I experienced the true caring of the people who work there during that process. Long story short, I took the dog home, the proper postings made, last night dog and owner were reunited. Though it didn't work out the way I 'd hoped for me, I know God's got mine waiting for me. SPCA NEED VOLUNTEERS. There are too many dogs without homes. Won't you help? read more

If you are looking for a cat or dog this is the place you should go to adopt. The staff is so nice and patient with you. When I adopted my puppy I was there for at least 3 hours trying to decide who I should bring home with me. Once I finally decided the staff was able to get me through the adoption process in no time at all. Everyone was very friendly and professional and I could tell they loved the work they were doing. Mixed review here- everyone who works here is very sincere and kind, but they really dropped the ball and I still haven't recovered. I had a friendship with a cat that would hang out behind a friends house and I saw her all the time, played with her, fed her- but she was always too scared to come with me. Finally, I had enough of seeing her on the street and had the time and resources to take her in fo adopt her. But She bolted from the carrier right when I got to the doors of the SPCA. The people workin in Admissions comforted me and said they were sure they would get her soon. Needless to say, the management helped retrieve her- they set a friendly trap and they called me the next day to tell me they got her but needed to keep her an extra few days because she was sick. Once she was better, Admissions said I can come in and do the adoption stuff. I checked in after a few days and said I could receive a call back. A week later I get a call back saying the good news was, she was better- the bad news was they "made a mistake" and took her to an adoption event and someone else put down a deposit for her and that I couldnt take her back. I was so unbelievably upset- I had already named her, I only took her in because I was told it was the right thing to do instead of just taking her into my apartment. Honestly I'm still not over it- they didnt even put my name in the system for her. I was devastated, and it really upset me that they still havent done anything to make it right. I will be adopting two kittens soon, and will have to go through the SPCA. I hope that its a smoother process this time around. read more

I attended a fundraiser here a couple of months ago and was really impressed by both the facility and the staff. Like any animal shelter I'm sure they have very limited resources but it was obvious that they were serious about doing the best job possible. I already have a cat and can't really adopt another one right now, but if I end up deciding to get kitty #2 I'll probably go through the SPCA. read more

I adopted my first pet from the Maryland SPCA in early March. Everyone I dealt with was well-informed and ready to answer any and all of my questions - and I had a lot. I checked out many rescue organizations in town in the search for a cat, and these guys just really had it together. My cat needed a surgery for a broken tooth, and they paid for it, so as not to deter me from adopting her with a huge vet bill. You can tell that everyone who works here really cares about animals. I am absolutely thrilled with my new best friend. Hopefully sometime down the road I will be able to adopt another from the SPCA! read more

The initial reply was quick but it took 3 days to reply with suggestions and their cost training is the same as Petco and PetSmart.

We adopted Ilyee (Margo) from the SPCA...and they were GREAT! I went online and all of there information was up to date, so we drove there (about an hour and a half) and people really do line up its great. When you walk in someone greets you and you are given directions. All of the staff is super helpfull and nice. Once you find a dog you can go out and play with it throw ball, they have little swimming pools it is great. Once you find your new best friend it is a well thought out screening process and meeting.(but you can take your pet home that day)They let you know everything they know about the animal and what there behavior tests have concluded. WHICH I THINK IS PERFECT. Fees are reasonable and they really do care about there animals. I will definintly be back again and will continue to support this awesome and much needed shelter!!! read more

Brought my 2 fur babies in for same day surgery. I was instructed to bring them in at 8am, and pick up time was at 4pm. Cat the receptionist was AWESOME she was very informative and very helpful in reassuring me they would be just fine. I would highly recommend coming here for your furry babies. I got a cat here recently, and it was a great experience. The adoption counselor, Celeste, was great at explaining everything, and the volunteers threw in some cat toys and a sample of food since I didn't have anything for the cat immediately. (Also, the cat, Suzie, has been great since then. :) ) They called to check in on how things were going; the price was good - $55 for the cat, plus all the shots and microchip and things, came to $90. I would recommend the SPCA to anyone. read more

Attended a happy hour here last week called "Wine and Wag". Dogs were welcome and got to bob for hot dogs (so cute), participate in paw painting, and frolick in the "fun run " together. I then took a tour of the newly-renovated Morton Gorn Center for Animal Adoption. This new kennel facility is beautiful. The dogs have larger kennels, lots of light, a nice bed, and plenty of toys. Seeing some of those animals was heartbreaking, though. They have many pit-bull mixes waiting for a home. One in particular caught my eye. This poor girl was missing a large amount of skin from her back. I can't even imagine how that happened. She was so loving and sweet, I wanted to take her home then and there. No dog, even a pit bull, deserves to be abused like that. All these animals want is someone to love and take care of them, as love is the only thing they know to give back. Think about taking a tour of this place and giving an animal a shot at a good life. Everyone deserves a second chance. read more

I adopted my lovely shepherd mix, Hazel, from the SPCA about 4 years ago. I am so thankful for the training services they offer. We were having some trouble with Hazel trying lunge and bark at other dogs while on a leash (she looked like a mad woman!). They opened my eyes to the magic of positive dog training.
