These soda bread scones are so good: soft, crumbly, extremely buttery, fall-apart deliciousness. They're also very filling; one scone was enough to feel like a full meal. The blackberry jam was just the right combination of tangy and sweet. Personally, I'm not a huge raisins-in-pastry person, so I could've done without that addition, but it didn't detract from how much I enjoyed these. We were able to order almost immediately, but there was maybe a 25-minute wait for the scones to come out. It's a little chaotic because there was not enough space for everyone to wait inside, and we were scolded by a lady playing guitar for standing too close to her so we had to go wait outside. However, the staff were really friendly and would navigate through the crowds to help ensure everyone gets their order, no matter where they're waiting. There's very little seating available, so we ate our treats at Tompkins Square Park, which is just one avenue away. We also tried the cold brew, which wasn't bad, but tasted more like a regular iced coffee.
Worth it. They are lovely and kind. And the scones reflect that, too! The scones are delicious. Crispy and fluffy, jam isn't overly sweet and homemade. Butter is slightly salted which enhances the flavor and makes it all balanced. Would absolutely get these again.
One of my favorite finds all year, with tha fresh Irish butter and jam being quite the star of the show to this fresh, warm scone. I wish I could get this all the time any time of day because you can tell how much love goes into it, and just how fresh everything g is. Went on a weekday morning, no line. Also tried the Irish tea, love that they have it!
People that work there are very kind, the service is as quick as possible but you have to wait for the scone to come out of the oven (about 10-15 mi ) and it's a small but casual place. You can buy individual scones that come with butter and jelly or can buy a pack of 6 scones for $30. We got 4 individual ones and it was very delicious - all ingredients were high quality.
Hot "Irish Soda Bread with butter and preserves" on it. Yep. That's what they have, and it's delicious! The shop is tiny and quaint with the kindest person taking customers' orders. We ordered two of them to-go, and walked up to Tompkins Square Park and found a bench to sit down and enjoy them. There is limited seating but we opted to walk-on with our order. They are open Thursday - Sunday and close when they run out. We went on Thursday and were happy we did because they were closing the next day for a family member's graduation. Not sure how you can double check if they're going to be open or not when you go. We live out-of-town and we would have had to try them on a future visit had we showed-up on the day of their family's celebratory graduation day. I will say...they are worth going back to try if they're closed when you pop by.
Wow! Just incredible and well-deserved rating and reputation. My partner and I aren't big on scones, but Mary O's scone/soda bread is the only one we'll have. Hours are limited to opening early and closing by 1pm, so plan accordingly. Perfectly crisp on the outside, just the right amount of melted butter on the inside, and a nice dollop of blackberry jam, it's easily shareable if you're on a food tour in Lower Manhattan. Will definitely return and bring our friends and family!
My friend stood in the queue for me in the morning and secured a scone for me. He instructed me to heat it on low heat so the butter would melt easily. I ate one half cold because I couldn't wait- so good!I heated up the other half in a pan and that was delicious too! Most scones tend to be overly dense and a bit dry but these weren't heavy, and definitely not dry. The home made jam was the perfect complement!

Came here on mother's day and it was packed. It's a pretty small shop. The line to order went by super fast but the wait time took about 35 minutes to get 2 scones. They don't really go in order so expect an estimate to be slightly longer than you plan on. The scones are really worth a try esp fresh out of the oven. Loved the combination of butter and jam inside which made a good savory and sweet taste in a soft scone. Unfortunately they don't sell the jam on it's own which I would totally get if I could.

They serve the scones fresh from the oven so be patient! The scones are nice and hot, and it's amazing with the butter and homemade blackberry jam. It's not dry at all and has a nice crispy crust with a soft inside. Overall, it was great to try but definitely expect to wait a bit when you come!
We had to try Mary O's scones after seeing them on social media and learning about it through Humans of New York, and was not disappointed. We expected a line and there was one , but it moved at a steady pace. You can smell the Irish Soda Bread from outside and the smell of butter. The shop only sells scones topped with Irish butter and blackberry jam. The scones are made with Odlums Flour from Ireland and displayed throughout the shop. Ordering was quick and we enjoyed live Irish music while we waited. The scones are served warm in a open box and is a mix of a traditional scone and biscuit. The blackberry jam is slightly tart but complements the butter. The entire process from arrival to leaving was about 40 minutes, but well worth it. They definitely live up to the hype.

The Irish Soda Bread scones are so good here that they make you want to slap the other scone bakers in New Yawk! My order was worth the 15-minute wait because it was served fresh out of the oven and piping hot! Mine came "fully dressed"--Mary O's lingo for a freshly baked scone topped with homemade blackberry jam and Irish butter. The scone had good texture and was not overly sweet. It was perfect in every way. Be prepared to stand on the long line out the door or to sit on the small bench outside. Terence was my server around 9:15 am on 3/1/26.

Worth a visit and every minute you may have to wait! Little spot in East Village with mouthwatering scones. Stopped in on a Friday morning at about 9ish. Small line but ordering moves quickly since your options are just with butter and jam on your scone or on the side and potentially a drink. Patrick was manning the line and truly seems to make it a point to have a personal interaction with each guest even if it is a quick one. You may have to wait a few for your scone and there is limited seating inside but please don't let that stop you. Scones are phenomenal and definitely get it with the butter and jam! They come out hot and fresh and have just the perfect amount of crispy edges and soft middle. We had to make a second stop to pick some up for my brother and sister-in-law who hadn't had the pleasure yet. read more

So incredibly tasty that my only complaint is to give me more jam! This place is so cute and has a great vibe. We went around 9am on a Sunday and there were probably a dozen people in line ahead of us. Didn't take too long to get our muffins. They ask if you're eating them there or to go (there's not much seating since it's a small shop but we found a bench outside). So tasty and unique that they pretty much only sell the muffins and some coffee. I'd highly recommend read more

When I saw a long line, I knew I had to give Mary O's a try. These are a couple of the continental breakfast items I explored. Hot Mulled Apple Cider: This warm beverage is made with cinnamon and orange zest. I was reluctant to explore this drink because I usually have chilled cider. As soon as I took a sip, I was pleasantly surprised how tasty it was. Irish Soda Bread Scone: This scone is served with Irish butter and homemade blackberry jam. It was slightly crisp on the outside soft and fluffy on the inside. It is basically bread, but it is unbelievably superior and I see why this menu item has gone viral. As a bonus, there is a mini Irish Market where customers can purchase groceries that are imported from Ireland. As another bonus, a guitarist performs every Sunday. The seating is limited to a couple tables, a window ledge and an outdoor bench, but there are plenty of benches only footsteps away at Tompkins Square Park. The bakery is only open Thursday through Sunday, so please plan accordingly. Best scones ever, showed up at open and there was already a semi-line. DO NOT GO ON WEEKENDS! There is always a huge line down the block. We go on weekdays nice and early. There's a few tables so if you want to sit and enjoy get there early, the staff is very chill and courteous unlike other popular spots in the area. The scones are some of the best I've had outside of Devon, the best in the US IMO. They are not stingy with the jam and the scone doesn't fall apart when you bite into it. Will continue to frequen this place as long as they're around. Please check it out if you're a scone junkie or even if you aren't. read more

I'm very torn on how to rate Mary O's. They say that they make scones and I don't like scones so if they're scones, I'll give it 4 stars. However, to me, this was closer to biscuit. It was verrry buttery and all you can smell is butter upon arrival. So if it's biscuits, I'll give it 3 stars. It does come out piping hot and they put jam on it. But it's not really worth the $7 and almost hour long wait. We arrived around 10:30-11am and there was no line out the door but there were a lot of people standing around a line as if they were lined up to order. But it's cause the shop is tiny and narrow so there's nowhere to really wait around. So definitely ask if people are in line. The was no line to order but after ordering, i realized why. They make the scones in batches so depending on when you arrive in the batch, you could be waiting a lonnnng time or a short time. When I ordered, they started calling names and the shop cleared out quickly. However, i stopped hearing names being called for about half an hour or so. It took me about 45 mins for my order. read more
A must get while in NY! Wow, just wow! We got lucky to get one of the last batches of freshly backed Irish scones! Ten minutes later they were sold out! The blackberry jam complements the Irish butter filled inside the crisp warm scone. Only regret is not getting more. Definitely worth the hype! read more
I don't normally like scones because they're so dry. I can't say that about Mary O's. This was hands down the best scone I've had. It was buttery, perfectly flakey, and the raspberry jam in the scone complimented it perfectly. The Irish butter was excellent. This scone was incredibly moist. I almost forgot it was a scone, and not a moist muffin. The only downside I can think of is the wait, it's brutal. I waited about 1 hour and a half. Thank god I was catching up with a friend. Overall, I would highly recommend Mary O's Irish Soda Bread. read more
As a person who loves scones, I've bookmarked Mary O's since I saw it on IG almost a year ago. We all know that not all viral spots are as amazing as the influencers claim they are. Fortunately, this is indeed as amazing as they say. Dare I say, the most perfect scone I have ever had! They're baked in a muffin tin so you have the 360 crisp exterior with the airy interior. Absolute perfection on its own without the butter and jam btw. But of course a whole other level when it's dressed. I got mine to go with butter & jam on the side. Popped it in the oven for a few minutes before eating. The jam was simply perfect. Just the right amount of sweetness and not sugary like most jams are. It could be bottled up and sold! Seriously worth the hype and am def returning. Note: I'd say go as early to opening as possible. I was there at almost 11 AM. While ordering was quick, the wait time was quite long. I came here just for the viral scone with jam. I arrived around 8 and not crowded at all. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. I saw that they know their regular clients and very engaging with them. The scone looks like a biscuit. It's round with a split in the middle for the jam and Irish butter. It is moist but has nice crisp on the outside. The jam is homemade. It has a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. This store also sells some Irish products too. read more

The first time I stopped by, they were sold out, and Mary was so sweet and apologetic (and of course, no apology needed! It was after noon by then). I'm happy to say that I have fulfilled my quest. This really was the most divine scone, and since I ate it there, the butter and fresh jam melted slowly into every crumbly bite. Crunchy edges and a soft, fluffy interior, all savored with a cup of Barry's breakfast tea. It was awesome to share this experience at a table with some friendly strangers too, and the person working the register was so upbeat and refreshing. It didn't matter that the heat outside was oppressive; there was free ice water provided too! What a perfect summer morning to share in good company and worthy bites. Thank you, Mary! read more
WHEN: Thur @9am Even though there was a line inside, the wait was not long. It can get stuffy since it's in an open kitchen just behind the counter. We waited just 10 minutes for: IRISH SODA BREAD SCONE - $6 Freshly made scones with Mary's homemade blackberry jam and Irish Butter. Yes, Mary makes them herself and is so dang good! It's so warm--toasty on the outside and soft and fluffy inside, completely covered in wonderful jam and butter--melting as you get it. It's amazing, I can eat 2 more of these. There's only one bench outside enough for 2 people to sit, so it's more of a takeaway spot. I highly recommend this spot--and I NEVER order scones! DEAR GOD YES, This place is AMAZING. the wait time is quite lengthy as you get it fresh in batches but the scone was so light and fluffy and didn't feel heavy like American baked goods generally so The jam is on the sweeter side but amazing read more
1000% worth the hype, the line, the wait and anticipation for the best Irish scones of your life. I've attempted to come here multiple times as a side quest to other things and always missed the cutoff of limited number of scones baked per morning. It was a chilly Wednesday morning around 10a when I was able to snag myself one with about a 20 minute wait straight out of the oven. The scone was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft/buttery on the inside with a delicious temperature contrast between the hot scone, melting butter, and fresh jam. There's also a limited number of bread loaves available per day that you can call ahead to reserve. The space inside is quite small but you can inhale your freshly baked good in Thompson Square Park nearby. read more

Yup this is the place. If you're thinking about it, GO. And go early because they sell out by noon! The Scone w/ Butter & Blackberry Jam is just an incredible unit. Buttery, soft with the perfect amount of denseness and a crunchy crispy crust throughout. The butter and housemade blackberry jam (THE JAM!) made the scone what it is. I wish there was more of that delicious jam because some bites were just plain. The wait was long, but it was definitely worth it to try. It's not cheap ($6+ per scone), but you can get a box to-go. Overall, I highly recommend trying it out if you're in the area! read more

Single-handedly one of the best things I've eaten in New York in a while. I've been delaying going to Mary O's because of the intense queues it draws, but this place is absolutely worth the wait. We went on a Sunday around 11 and didn't wait too long. The small bakery in EV has an efficient system. Order in line, then wait for your name to be called. Note: not too many chairs to sit and wait in, but the day we went there was a woman performing on her guitar in the corner! We ordered 2 scones with the included Irish butter and blackberry jam. Everything comes out fresh out of the oven. So decadent, so fluffy, and the perfect combination of sweet and savory. This place is absolutely a must try! read more
Let's be honest, this place deserves more than 5 !! Lines can get long so be prepared to wait, they close at 1pm but sell out earlier than that, I went one time around Noon and they were sold out. On my second attempt, we were able to grab the scones + the loaf of Irish soda bread ($30). We spent $60 in all but don't regret it!! The individual scone was our fav though, the larger loaf, the middle of the bread was a bit raw. We baked at home again. The scones are fluffy and crusty in the outside, which goes perfect with thick butter and the homemade blackberry jam, the jam is more runny than regular jam and less sugary which is a plus!
