Fancy French Frivolities. My wife and I were walking down Queen and chanced upon this French bakery. We got: - Merveilleux: Dark chocolate pastry. The outside was studded with dark chocolate bits to cover up a mousse-y inside. Not overly sweet (good), though not overly distinct as well (not so good). - Incroyable: White chocolate and speculoos pastry. I liked this better than the marvelous one since it had a nutty taste that highlighted the creaminess of the actual mini-cake. - Sugar Brioche Bun: The bun is airy yet delectably chewy at the same time. It also has the perfect sweet glaze on the outside. And not sure why, but the inside tasted a bit coconut-y to me. Of everything we had, I easily liked this the most. - Chocolate Roll: Nothing special. Even the bread part of the roll was pedestrian, which was disappointing considering how good the brioche bun was. - Cappuccino and Hote Chocolate: Both overly milky to the point that the coffee and chocolate tastes were diluted out of the drinks. Overall, a pretty good French bakery with a truly delicious brioche bun. Heard the croissants (sold out when we went) are also good, so may just have to drop by again for those. read more

As I was walking along Queen street I noticed this place being renovated before the pandemic. I was very excited to see a bakery open up in my neighborhood. I did open a couple of weeks ago. However, due to the pandemic they are only take pre-ordered items. I totally understand and I decided to give it a try bc it's so close to me. I went to their website and had to ordered just by looking at the picture not knowing exactly what it is. I ordered a Brioche, and 2 Pastries (One Marvelous and One Incredible). They are offering free delivery if you order more than $25 with of food. The pastry is quite good. It looked like a cake but it's more of a meringue cake which is something I never had before. The Brioche bun was quite large (250 g). 2 people can easily share one. I look forward to the pandemic being over and having their pastries displayed ready for walk in orders. A couple years ago, we met a couple at a b&b in Ottawa. They are from France and they recommended this place to us, saying it's the closest to France out of all bakeries they've been in Toronto. Stopped by Aux Merveilleux de Fred while walking along Queen Street. The brioche looked so good from the window we decided to go in to try. We ordered the large chocolate chip cramik brioche and a cappuccino. The brioche was warm so when we cut into it, steam came out. The brioche was so moist and not too sweet. Incredible brioche buns! We've tried all of them and the sugar cramik brioche bun and raisin cramik brioche bun are our favourites. We basically get one every weekend. It's hard finding a bakery that bakes like they do in France. Getting the basics down such as something as simple as a brioche is not an easy thing. This bakery gives an upscale Parisian cafe vibe, with beautiful finishes, a huge crystal chandelier above the cash and crown moulding on the ceilings, and French words and art on the walls. I got a sugar cramik brioche and it was absolutely Marvelous. It was fluffy and sweet. They had many other sweets that I have yet to try. Beautiful cafe on Queen St with pretty pastries and brioche bread, but unfortunately it fell short on our expectations. Merveilleux ($6.70): whipped cream sandwiched between two meringue wafers, covered with chocolate flakes. It was light and tasty, not too sweet, but a bit overpriced for just meringue and whipped cream. It is also hard to share with others; but they do offer smaller portions of different flavours in boxed sets that could make for a nice gift (though be sure to store them well since they are so airy and made of whipped craem) Raisin Brioche: We were very excited to try this because it was initially what drew us in: golden, gleaming buns of all shapes and sizes. We cut it open the day after, and it was quite dry; it fell short of our expectations. Waffle: These are similar to stroopwafels, or pizelles with butter & sugar between them. While these had mixed reviews from our crowd, I personally found them too sweet and lacking in texture; neither crispy nor chewy, just... like a stale pizzelle. These are offered in two flavours; vegeoise (rum and sugar) and vanilla. The decor, while pushed to the side, looked very nice, and it looks like a great place to sit for a while and catch up with friends over coffee and sweets, but unfortunately the products we tried fell short of our expectations. read more

I went out to buy breakfast for the next day and stumbled upon this place. The place is run by two Asians which threw me off at first since they were serving french pastries. The staff were really friendly and explained the menu to me, they recommended I get the raisin brioche and their chocolate brioche. The chocolate brioche had a lot of chocolate chips on it but was not overly sweet, it was perfect for a light morning breakfast. The raisin brioche had a great grape flavor throughout the entire bun. On top of the raisin bun had a light sugar crust to give it an extra sweetness which was delightful. Despite eating these the next day the buns were both still very airy and light. I was so excited to see this French chain in Toronto! I remember visiting them in NYC and Paris. My friend and I came a little late in the afternoon, around 1pm on a Thursday and all the croissants were sold out! Despite my initial disappointment, we got a mini salmon sandwich in the pain au lait and chocolate brioche, along with two iced teas. Everything was delicious and the inside was so cutely decorated. I've been so excited to visit the Toronto location of Aux Merveilleux aka Marvelous by Fred. This is a famous patisserie with locations throughout the world including Europe, UK and North America. I'm so HAPPY that you're here in Toronto! I've visited several of the locations in Europe, and the products here are equally as great! I would recommend that you spend some time on the website, both the North American version and the original European/French sites to really learn about the history of the brand and its products. There is a such a commitment to authenticity and quality, and honestly, these offerings are hard to beat anywhere in the world! Some of my favs include the original #Merveilleux pastries which are meringue based pastries, with whipped cream, flavourings and topped with shaved chocolates - Mmmmmm these are incredible! They are also well known for their rich and luxurious #brioche dough, and one of my fav products is the Raisin and Sugar Cramik brioche - This is such a rich, buttery and flavourful bread. I love it because it reminds me of the raisin bread that my grandmother loved so much, combined with a buttery french pastry - Yum! I LOVE this patisserie, whether in Europe or Toronto, and I hope that our location will be a success! A few caveats - If you are planning on taking the patisseries to go, because they are based on meringes and whipped cream, you won't get far before they melt...you have about 15 minutes! The brioches/croissants will last a few hours though. My recommendations to the restaurant: Please offer boxes! I ordered several patisseries, croissants, breads, and I was hoping that they could all be placed in a box or multiple boxes for transportation. However, you only had paper bags. This makes it difficult for your customers to transport your products and larger orders. I would be more than willing to pay for a box if needed btw! To summarize, this location lives up to my expectations of what I experienced in Paris, and I love your products. I'd eat these daily, but for health reasons, I won't ;) read more

Well it truly is marvelous! What a fantastic bakery full of delicious options. The meringue are heavenly. It is obviously a very popular place, as there is nearly always a line and seating is a not easy to get, but one bite will make it all worth the wait. I passed by the store several times while attending the Toronto Film Festival, then finally gave in and gave it a try. Now I wish I had stopped each time I passed the store. Merveilleux. Say what? I can't pronounce the name but what I can tell you is the little balls of meringue coated in chocolate whipped cream then covered with various shavings is absolutely delicious. Each flavour has a name such as the L'Excentrique and Le Marveilleux as mentioned. Yes they are delicate so it's best to eat in the cafe. Marvelous by Fred opened up in Toronto on Queen West and the find was a pleasant surprise. The inside is so cute and accentuated by a marvellous chandelier.
