Um, sorry, but NO. I'm not paying 15 dollars again for a weirdly flavored/flavorless frittata that aspires to be gourmet but instead falls flat.
I came here for a morning-of-the-wedding breakfast with the bride and our close friends as a matter of convenience, mostly, since we were all staying at the Marriott. Normally, I would never eat at a hotel restaurant of my own accord--the automatic markup that comes with the territory (namely, the short hop down the elevator) goes without saying.
However, the ambiance is really lovely, and quite Californian in that modern, sleek, dark-wood-open-floor-plan-oh-we-are-so-cool-and-organic sort of way. Example: packets of not only sugar, but also stevia and organic agave sweetener to flavor your coffee and tea!
Basically, breakfast works one of two ways: Fork $25 dollars for their breakfast buffet (which of course includes beverages of your choice), or choose from their menu of items ranging from 8-20ish dollars. Um, hello, $25/per person for a buffet is steep in VEGAS; no way in hell I was going to fork that over at 9:30 in the morning in SAN DIEGO. I scoured their breakfast menu for something cheap(er) and healthy(ish), since I was anticipating eating a lot of cake later at the reception in the evening, and settled on the Farm Fresh Vegetable Egg White Frittata for $15.
Bad choice. The Frittata, once it finally arrived, was a tasteless unsalted white blob imbedded with chunks of barely cooked carrot and beet.
Flavor fail. The beets added a touch of earthy sweetness that (contrary to the beliefs of posturing would-be-gourmands) detracted terribly from the vibe of the dish because it was like the beets were like "HEY HEY LOOK AT ME I TASTE LIKE DIRT SHUT UP EGG WHITES YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING GOOD TO ADD ANYWAY".
Texture fail. I would have been fine with the carrots if they had been better cooked... I am not used to frittatas that have crunchy bits in them. Bell peppers, spinach, potatoes, onions.... just about ANYTHING else would have been better.
The hashbrowns (1 of 2 sides that came with the meal) was only ok. The only redeeming aspect of my frittata plate was the buttered and toasted slices of sourdough bread that came with the order.
The service was only mediocre, as well. Robin, our server, was fairly attentive in the first five minutes (and pushy about the buffet) but didn't return for almost the entirety of the meal after that. I wonder if she registered that our group of 6+ ladies would have had to pay an 18% gratuity anyway, so she didn't bother putting in the extra effort. read more
