Went up to the 22nd floor and decided to go back down to the restaurant and eat there. Reck was the bartender whom provided us phenomenal service. The calamari and shrimp was delicious and so was the mountain of fries they gave us. My partner got the chicken fried rice which he said was really good as well. We were the only ones there besides the bartender so it was perfect. Giving us the perfect atmosphere to enjoy each other in with. read more

I had the best food and drink at Soliel@k! ALL of it truly rivaled even the best restos in Las Vegas! This isn't surprising to me though, because San Diego has a top-spot when it comes to good restaurants and food in general. Customer service at Soleil@k is quietly understated. Waiters are soft spoken, and are intuitive enough to respect your need for quiet solace if necessary. But even then, the level of efficiency does not take away from the non-intrusive and low key service. It's the perfect place for you if you are a business-person who likes great food. Or if you are a single lady and want to enjoy your time by having an elegant meal alone, and leave the hustle and bustle of a far too fast-paced world behind. These times are pretty few and far between, so we must enjoy them when we can recognize them. Soleil@k is such a place to be able to enjoy these moments. Trust me, this is a unique and pleasant find. Soliel@k is Marriott's Gaslamp Quarter Hotel's restaurant, located on the lobby level. There is additional dining outdoors, along the front of the hotel, where you can sit and people watch while dining. Located a few steps from Petco Park, the hotel is located at the mouth of the Gaslamp District, so it gets a lot of foot traffic. One of the meals that really stands out for me was my lunch, which was a cheeseburger. It wasn't just your ordinary cheeseburger though. I asked for bacon and counted 7 whole pieces of bacon on that burger (yes, 7 pieces!)!! It came on a poppy-seeded bun that was perfectly toasted. The taste was out of this world delicious! I ate all of it, and I usually never finish a burger in one sitting. As if that wasn't enough, alongside it came a spring salad, with a homemade salad dressing that was so good, I asked them for a to-go box so I could eat the rest of the salad later. Funny, cause I don't ever remember asking for a to-go box FOR A SALAD! Haha! This lunch was a reasonably priced $12.00. I highly recommend this beautifully designed and decorated restaurant! Soleil @ K is our annual breakfast spot post SD Rock and Roll Half Marathon. We were able to be seated right away without any wait at the hostess station.The ambiance is nice, clean, and the seats are very comfortable. I marked my rating down 1 to 4 stars due to the long wait to have a waiter visit our table. Our waiter took our drink & food orders by memory. Our meals were delivered in a timely manner. All of the dishes looked delicious. I ordered a Carb Conscience Frittata. It was fantastic!! My friends ordered Crunchy French Toast with a generous side of bacon (there were probably 6 slices), Eggs Benedict, and an Omelet. Our waiter was friendly, helpful, and spot on. read more

Decided to dine here since I stayed at the Marriott hotel and didn't feel like driving. Time was after 9:00 pm and the restaurant was filled near to capacity with two large parties and outdoor dinning was also busy. The decor is chic and modern and it's nice to have an option to dine outdoors or indoors. The matradee took care of us and sat us at a booth which was great since I didn't make reservations. The waitress was friendly and attentive considering she was taking care of a large bachelorette party and another two parties. We munched on the bread basket which had a nice variety of tasty fresh bread. For my main entree I went with the Star Ranch Grass Fed Rib Eye which included steamed veggies, frizzled Leeks, Au gratin potato and red wine sauce. The steak was tender, juicy and delicious. veggies were steamed perfectly and the Au gratin potato was crisp on the outside and hot inside with a hearty flavor. Kenwood Merlot paired well with my dinner. I also dined here for breakfast twice and both times was pleased with the service and quality of the food and service. This restaurant has a great chorizo omelet and the best sausage patties! read more

Went in to Soleil for the Sunday brunch. We sat out of the patio. We decided to get the breakfast bar buffet. The buffet looked good and the server said we could get an omelet or waffle if we wanted on top of the bar items. We were in!! We got our orange juice and decided to go up to the bar for bacon and a muffin. We came back to find our bacon was almost totally cold. The sausage was cold to... WTF!!!??? Really, this should be hot and not able to serve to people if it was cold. Let me tell you, everything at the breakfast bar was not warm it was colder... This place is not even complying to state law by having the food at the proper temperature for serving to customers. I told our server and he said he would check... Nothing happened and we went back for seconds on the cold bacon.... The waffle came out hot and the omelet was hot and good. Everything else was well under state standards for temperature... This was a bad visit and this place needs to retrain their servers and staff on temperature of food being served. They are way under standards here and no one did anything to change it during our visit... The manager here needs to be evaluated on his ability to properly provide to the customers.... He is surly not doing his job to insure quality here at all... Kind of sad for such a nice place... The price was way to high for what you get and the quality of the food in general... Great food inside the Marriott hotel. I dined here three to four times on my stay and each time every selection was delicious hot and fresh. Never was there a long wait but, once after raving to my husband about the service and attentiveness of the staff I brought him to have a drink. We were seated and no one checked on us for over thirty minutes so we left without drinks or possibly food. Well that was an awful first impression for my husband. I insisted it had to be a fluke and brought him back on our next stay. He did enjoy the food and atmosphere this time around. Loved the Poutine Fries and what a great item to have on the menu to offer diversity besides latin and American Fare. Another fave is the house margaritas. Try sitting outdoors and watch the crowds go by during a game. read more

It's crazy to me that they've managed to consistently receive complaints year after year about their service issue and nothing has changed. Everything you read is true. We had vouchers because we paid $300 for a nights stay; the thought of complimentary breakfast seemed appealing. You're allowed access to the buffet as well as the ability to order omelets, waffles, pancakes and French toast from the menu. The buffet was 3 warmers: one with scrambled eggs, one with bacon and the last with scalloped potatoes. The waffles and pancakes were $12-$16 so you really felt there was a value in getting it complimentary. The flavor was actually alright but the biggest issue was waiting an hour to get anything. You literally watch a staff of 10+ including the hostess and restaurant manager, shuffle around to manage what, maybe 8-10 tables at most? It's mind boggling. The hostess and manager are running food orders out AND IT IS STILL somehow horrible service. Not worth it. read more

I've already written a review about the food here. My last visit here, on a Sat night w/ banker friends from LA, turned out to be an utter disaster. We have NEVER received such POOR, horrible service in our adult lives. Richard was THE most smug and rude waiter we have ever had. I won't mention the food. It was sub-par at best. Read my previous review if you want food details. It was BEYOND embarrassing to me to have suggested this place for my friends and I to eat. I only wanted to eat here so that we can bypass the line to Altitude after dinner (everyone has to buy something to eat in order to have the manager take you to the front of the Altitude line). We had 5 ppl. We ordered 3 entrees. 3 appetizers. Their appetizer and flatbreads are not cheap - the cheapest appetizer we ordered was $16. At the end of THE worst service dinner ever, I went to the manager to talk to her (not really about the crappy service but to get us to the front of the line). Well, I guess crappy waiters follow even crappier managers. Jenifer (?) , with the same exact stink face and attitude as Richard, proceeds to tell me that b/c we ordered only THREE entrees, she will only take THREE ppl to the front of the line. At this point, I was beyond done w/ this restaurant, their ppl, the entire hotel. I kindly and politely told her we ordered three appetizers that cost the same as three additional entrees. She said it doesn't matter, go to the website and it says you must order an entree for each person. Go the the website? Really? To the management of this establishment, go to your website and let me know where it shows this Fine Print that your manager was so rudely telling me about (I can't seem to find it anywhere as of today). Also, to the management, teach your staff to have a better attitude towards their customers. There's NO need for anyone in your establishment to have a 'chip on their shoulder'. If you don't want to be pleasant or civil towards ppl, then *perhaps*, just PERHAPS, you are working in the WRONG profession. read more

Just basing this review strictly on the bar/Happy Hour experience. I've eaten @ Soleil when it first opened, but that was last year, too long ago to give a valid review. But, for Happy Hour, its a great spot. The bar area is kinda small, but has lounge seating with couches and chairs, as well as outdoor patio seating. And the happy hour specials are pretty good... Half-off all Appetizers on the menu $4 Alaskan draft beer $5 Margaritas Great service. A few plasmas around for sports watching. Loungey House background music. For my cousin's 30th birthday, she decided she wanted dinner here because it was in the hotel we were staying at. It was really a nice choice. We didn't have to leave the hotel. The bar was on the top, restaurant on the bottom, and we had a room to stay in. Was seated immediately which was nice on a Saturday at dinner time. Service was great. Our waiter was friendly and took great care of us. I loved the food. Ended up getting the salmon. It's a small portion but it was very filling for me. Been here twice now and I give it 5 stars both times. The food is excellent. It is a bit on the pricier side, but it is the Gaslamp District. We took advantage of the restaurant menu and it was fantastic. I had the hangar steak with some delicious sauce and yummy mushroom risotto. There were also lightly cooked carrots and broccolini on the artfully designed plate. It was the perfect amount of food for an entree. Not too heavy, not too light. The wedge salad was a good size and not overwhelming like the huge hunked wedge salads I've gotten before. The blue cheese dressing didn't taste too much like blue cheese, but was light and tasty. The dessert was simple, but also well done. The service here is fantastic. It's never been that busy when I've been. The patio is great for people watching and the inside feels romantic and cozy. If you eat here, they give you free valet which is a hard thing to come by for downtown. This is a perfect date spot. The food looks and tastes good. I do like the patio dining as you can enjoy your food while you can look at people while they do their thing. I did not like my blackened chicken sandwich. The chicken was very dry and the same goes for the top bun too. What the heck, yo? I needed to take a break from all these red meats, so I end up with this...dry bun and dry chicken. What can you do? I love this restaurant. It is in the gaslamp area and close to Petco park. After an awesome dinner you can take the elevator up to the skybar lounge for a 360 degree view of the city. First tried this place when doing the taste of San Diego., had a small dish of Risotto with a scallop and was instantly hooked. Have been a few times since and they change their menu around, but it is always good food and in the $15- $25 range without drinks. The food tastes great, very nice and friendly service, and the ambiance and decor are outstanding. read more

I scheduled a reservation for our office breakfast awards meeting at the Soleil@K breakfast buffet about three weeks ago. We were quite happy with their prices and selection of food, plus they made the process easy. I mentioned that our group would be 19 people and would be holding a meeting followed by awards (In other words, being loud).   On my last phone conversation, I requested if we could be placed somewhere out of the way since our 19 people would be talking loudly. Whoever I spoke with over the phone said we could be placed at the end of the room and out of the way. Imagine my surprise (and unfortunately my boss' disappointment) when we were placed right in the middle of the room. I understand there are no private rooms for Soleil@K, but we were hoping to be placed out of center stage so we wouldn't be a bother to the other patrons and vice versa.   I would definitely go there again for their food and service, but not with such a large group of people. read more

Went here for my mom's birthday dinner. Went in around 630pm on a Friday and it was very empty and did not get much busier by the time we left. For a restaurant of such high quality, I did not find it very impressive. The menu was pretty small, with not much to choose from. When you go somewhere and it takes you more than 15 minutes to choose what you want (not because there's too many options, but because you don't know what to choose of the available options), then that is a poor start to dinner. Also, the dish that my mom did pick out, they ended up not having, and she had to default to something she did not really want, again because the small menu. But with that being said, what we did order ended up being really yummy. For the birthday girl, a huge cotton candy and icecream for dessert. read more

I want to say we came in to have drinks and some appetizers and just hang out before the journey concert. We were the only ones in the restaurant. We ordered drinks first and didnt receive them till well after our appetizers were served and finished. And then two people ordered margaritas one with salt one without. The one without salt came in a tiny martini glass while the one with came in a normal glass, it was not even a quarter the size of the other. This is the main reason I eat here..to get Priority line service up to Altitude because honestly the food is only ok. The ambiance oft the place is really cool though, the bar gets jumping sometimes during game days. The food is served in large plate/ small plate fashion...so its sort of like a tapas bar. I have had the flat bread pizza's and the tortilla soup. Everything I have has was ok...not really worth the money if I wasn't going up to Altitude. The one thing that I love from this place is the Sangria....get some....cause its freakin awesome! read more

It seems most of San Diego is challenged with service issues. Soleil @ k is no exception. I get a waiter who is busy helping a large 20 seat party and comes to me only sometimes. The restaurant was rather unbusy at 8:00 p.m. -- I should have just walked away and cancelled my reservation; as it turned out I did not need a reservation. The food was so beyond ordinary. The baby green salad was tasteless and nothing interesting was in my add mixture of lettuce. i think the restaurant management expected you to be excited by their ceramic program. You soon get over that when you are hungry. I had prawns with a leaf of spinach crowning a moist-less, taste-less risotto. The wine list made little sense almost all California wines and a few usual suspects. The experience is un-even with service and the beat inside seems to be wavering between what could be a good experience to an experience that everyone there is anxious to leave for the evening. read more

After reading reviews dated back to 2008, all were correct. Our server, Rich, was not excited to be there whatsoever. He never introduced himself and even though we were the ONLY table on the patio on a saturday night, he was not happy that I told him that we were in no hurry. He barely conversed with us so it reflected in his tip. We told open table that we were celebrating our anniversary and no one said a thing, whereas most restaurants (good ones) will make it a point to recognize your special occasion. We dragged out the dinner as long as we could. $130 for two people later, we went upstairs to Altitude. It was hip, spacious and a great view of the city. That was the best part of the night. I will not be back to Soleil. Too much hype for a downtown restaurant. Hopefully the managers read these reviews and do something about it already!! read more

A restaurant week gem! I'm reading all these negative reviews about Soleil @ K and don't really understand why. I had a great time dining out during restaurant week and plan on coming back to experience the regular menu. The table setup is a bit odd. You basically sit at one large table with everyone else but the table is separated by these PoMo glass bead holding things. Each "table" is designated by a tablecloth going across the main table. Personally, I appreciate the "out of the box" (hate that term) thinking involved, but this is the reason I don't like Benihana. Sitting at the same table with strangers takes away from the intimacy of dining out. Lamb "Lolipops" = interesting name for "bit sized" lamb chops Lobster Tempura = Wow. A delicate appetizer with incredibly rich flavors (Truffle butter sauce - holy moly it was delicious) Roasted Duck with Honey Lavender Glaze = Not a fan. The duck was overcooked, the sweetness of the glaze was overpowering and did not match up with the gamey flavors of the duck. That plus the sweet potato was too much sweetness. Prime Hangar Steak = Should have ordered this. Whoa, it was tasty. Mushroom Risotto, Demi Glace and Truffle Oil. Oh yeah. Quite the decadent steak. Chocolate Brownie Sundae = The name says it all. Heaven Hot Apple Crisp with Vanilla Bean Gelato = not as good as the sundae, but good enough to eat the whole thing. Service was good, not overbearing, not negligent. This was my first time dinning here, we had reservations for a birthday dinner on Friday June 14th it was a group of 12 all girls for a birthday celebration. We got seated right away, not to mention we were the ONLY table in the restaurant through out our whole dining experience. Server came over to greet us, then gave us a few minutes to look over the menus. They brought out bread un-toasted we placed our drink order which took OVER 30 minutes for the bartender to make, they also then swapped our bread out for toasted bread. We placed our food order which took about 40 minutes for the food which is understandable. I made a reservation for dinner on Saturday night. When I walked in to find the restaurant EMPTY, I knew I had made a bad choice. Any restaurant in Downtown San Diego that is not busy on a weekend evening has serious trouble. Usually, I would have just walked out, but we ended up staying. The restaurant had two other parties so I thought at the very least, the service would be fast and attentive. NOPE. I have never ever been in such an deserted restaurant and had such SLOW mishandled dinner service. The drinks we ordered to enjoy with our appetizers didn't come until after the entrees were served. Can you believe that? Not only that, one guy in our party didn't even HAVE an entree because the server didn't take down his order. What the hell happened there? The food, when it did finally show up, was quite good. The finishing touch of lemon cotton candy was nice. I really loved this place. The food we had was amazing. (I can't remember exactly what I got, but I started with a soup with chicken and avocado and cilantro and it was yummy. Then I think I got the filet, which was cooked perfectly. My friends had a fish and the roasted chicken, maybe...? Also good.) Our waitress was not only super cool and sassy, and a total treat, but she turned out to be from Boston. (That's extra points in my book.) She was friendly, and got our food and drinks quickly and totally had fun with us. Speaking of drinks. Can you say raspberry champagne mojito? Yea. It was spectacular. I love this place and I will be here in the bar area sipping a half priced glass of wine on Sunday while watching the Padres play! Nice little, charming bar area where the appetizer menu is half priced ALL day on Sunday! I love the salmon tacos and they have a fantastic wine list. They have beer specials on Sundays also! The service is what really ruins this place. I was there with my partner for a nice dinner, as we are visiting from San Francisco, and were expecting a great deal more from this place. The waitress had to be on cocaine! I am not kidding! It's the only way to explain her constant rubbing of her nose and extremely (I mean--too much!) energetic attitude. We had ordered the lovely wine flight pairing for the main entrees and they weren't even there when the entree came out! In fact, 5-minutes later, after I had complained with management about the server, the wine was still not there! This place has some serious staffing issues and should take care of them immediately. My friend and I were staying at the Marriott attached and wanted to get a drink before meeting up with some friends for a night on the town. I can't comment on the food because we only sat at the bar, but the vodka tonics we had were very strong. The next morning my friend and i came back so she could get a bloody mary to cure her hangover and it was super spicy!! I went here for lunch yesterday and everything about the experience was wonderful. We had a large group and the restaurant had perfect seating for us. My group ordered a couple of the flatbread pizzas: one with rock shrimp and the other with spinach and mushrooms. Both were excellent: Really crispy bread with fresh toppings. I had the Ahi Chop Salad and it was again really fresh and tasty. It had a tangy dressing with shredded ginger. A great lunch. Others at my table had the tortilla soup which, like another Yelp reviewer, they raved about. I've had the soup here once before and I have to agree with them on how good it is. The service was great - even explaining some interesting details about the menu like the fact that they boil the corned beef for their Ruebens for five hours - I'll have to try that next time! I also want to try the lemonade next time - someone from our group ordered it and it had fresh raspberries and blueberries floating around the ice. I had the best mushroom risotto and chicken (with honey mustard glaze I believe) EVER! My friend works at this resturaunt and he refered me to come eat here, so I stopped in for dinner. Absolutely amazing expierence and food. The staff was so friendly, accommodating and well educated about the meal choices. I had a coctail with my meal (bartenders special) which was lemonade, Malibu and raspberries, my new favorite! For desert I had a sample of the little cakes the offer (flan, tiramisu, and mini doughnuts) and they were incredible. We went here during Restaurant Week and I really enjoyed myself. Now...I've not eaten at many hotel restaurants except for Vegas buffets! (this one is located at the Marriot DT) and I didn't really feel like I was in a hotel...we were seated inside but next to the patio on a game day, so it was fun to people watch and such. If you're ever at ALTITUDE (you can order select items from the restaurant) or at Soleil @K itself, be sure to have some of the flatbreads (essentially pizza) because those are delicious. Readlly really good food. The ambiance was a lot like that of the Gaslamp itself; one of trying a bit too hard to be better than it is. You know what I mean? When you take a flip-flop wearing beach bum and putting a nice shirt and a clean pair of jeans on and acting like you are made of money....that is how it felt there... But yeah the food was awesome. This is actually a REALLY REALLY decent, enjoyable place!! Delicious food!! As far as the negative reviews on this site, I think they are OLD, perhaps just some people who like to complain. I recommend this restaurant. It did take a while for our dinner to come (we were warned close to 25min for our steak), but it was worth it. I had the veal, my friends had the crusted ahi and the chicken. I have to say our server was extremely knowledgeable, professional, and descriptive about the food. He was 100% dead on and nailed the recommendations for each of us!!! I'm not sure if bringing cotton candy at the end was an attempt to flirt, but it won me over!! Then we were escorted to the front of the line and taken to the Altitude lounge on the roof....I have to say, it was an amazing experience, and I will not only recommend it, but i will be back as well. read more
