Went to the Tasting Bar for a flight and charcuterie platter. What a pleasant find!! The staff sommelier, Erica, walked us through a selection of 6 wines from around the world. She was exceptionally bright and well versed on all of the wines - just how it should be... but rarely ever is... great ambiance and we can't wait to get back... read more

Had the Reuben and their burger. Reuben was incredible. Fries were awesome. Ketchup free! (5/5) Burger was good! Cooked just as I ordered. Chips were nice. During Comic-Con so not a normal time Overall the hotel is well staffed for the crowds but still you must expect to wait 15 to 30 min at lunch times. It is not cheap but the food and drinks are very good. Service is always top notch. If it is too busy go to Roys out by the bay. read more

Came here and ordered off the menu - my companion had the Buffett. Visited on a Saturday around 11am. Kathy she was our server and she was outstanding and my rating is not a reflection of her service. We went here for breakfast while staying at the Marriott hotel bc of convenience- but I did not have a great experience. Found some sort of plastic in my food not sure where it came from. They had to remake my meal and replace my Drink. All that was good- but an apology from a manager would have gone a long way. I was not compensated and I was not looking for a free meal. But the customer service was lacking. Even though my companion had the buffet they stopped eating to wait for me to get new food. Which let his food get Cold. It was just a mess. I would say take the time to go to a breakfast/ brunch place instead of coming here... even if it's for convenience. read more

Such a wonderful restaurant! We found ourselves there on St Patrick's Day and had an awesome meal. Service was impeccable! This restaurant is located inside the Marriott with a view of the harbor. The atmosphere is great and you are close to the water and can get a great view depending on where you sit, they also have a decent bar which is probably the better part of the restaurant. We ordered a ceasar salad and a burger and though the food came out great it's nothing really over the top or fancy just another salad and simple burger for higher than normal prices because it's located in a hotel. The service was also top notch, but I was disappointed to see for such an expensive hotel that they didn't have better options. I have seen food trucks that offer much more in terms of selection and creativity. read more

Literally just got kicked out of the restaurant on a rainy, empty Sunday morning for not wanted to eat food but rather just have some coffee (who knows, maybe I would have wanted some food soon?). I would completely understand this if the restaurant was busy, but there wasn't a soul in the joint, possibly because they shoveled them all out by recommending Starbucks for everyone? It might be good, but we won't know today! ...update! A few hours later, management calls to apologize. Not only do they sincerely apologize, but they graciously ask us to come to dinner to experience the true Marina Kitchen. The food was superb, the service was conscientious and helpful and the management went above and beyond. I think I'll keep my initial review up here because I find it important for you all to know that the management at this restaurant will go out of its way to ensure its guests have an enjoyable experience. read more

Burrata Cheese ($14) is served with tomato jam, speck, and toasted bread. The burrata is like a creamy cloud of cheese. It's so soft and mild, it pairs well with the tomato jam and speck, adding both sweet and salty notes. The toasted bread is the perfect delivery vehicle for this starter. Rating: 5/5 Seafood Salad ($19) is Dungeness crab, rock shrimp, and Maine lobster atop gem lettuce and avocado green goddess dressing. It's the perfect spring/summer salad to enjoy while overlooking the lush tropical pool area. The crab, shrimp, and lobster are cooked to perfection, each with their own unique flavor notes of sweet and briny flavors. The dressing has a nice flavor and lends itself nicely to the seafood, adding flavor without overpowering. Rating: 5/5 Brandt Beef Flat Iron ($26.50) is a grilled flat iron steak topped with herb butter and served with arugula salad and truffle fries. This has to be the best flat iron steak around! The steak has the tender texture of filet mignon but with subtle marbling. The knife cuts through like butter. The herb butter adds an herbal essence bringing out the sweetness of the beef. The truffle fries are so aromatic and highly addictive indeed; crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside with truffle flavor and aroma in every bite. Rating: 5/5 Maker's Mark Milkshake ($14) is served with maple lacquered pepper bacon. It has a creamy texture from the ice cream. The Maker's Mark bourbon packs a punch but lends a caramel-like flavor to the shake. The added bacon shakes things up with a little bit of salty. This also won the "Best Dessert" at the San Diego Bay Food & Wine Festival. Rating: 5/5 read more

I love how hotel restaurants are getting better these days and this restaurant feels like it's even a couple steps ahead of that. Walking in and what do i see? this beautiful wine cellar. Inside i was even more impressed with a meat slicer that is hand cranked so that it don't heat up and keeps the cuts even cleaner. a Coravin which allows you to enjoy a glass of wine without pulling the cork. and the food is good very well done which matched the decor of this lovely restaurant. i kept forgetting i was in a hotel with the view of the marina from my table. The bar is respectable, they have barrel aged cocktails. how awesome is that? a hotel bar with a good beverage program doing barrel aging. read more

Lunch Thursday May 10th....FIRST day open to the public. Excellent service, atmosphere and decor. Few people there....it just opened. Food extremely bad. The food is far below the standard of the Marriott chain. I've been to all the restaurants in the Gaslamp Marriott. The food at the Marina Kitchen is much worse compared to the Gaslamp Marriott. Its a shame the food is so bad because they did a great job of decorating the room. Nice tables, colors, and view. It wasn't like they were trying for something special and missed. They didn't try. Vegetable Plate $7. Tiny amount of raw vegetables that weren't fresh. Wilted soggy string beans, carrots and cauliflower. Nothing worse than soggy string beans. The menu said some of the vegetables were pickled but they weren't. There was a goat cheese spread that was generic supermarket quality. The tomato sauce wasn't that bad. The only thing in the entire order that wasn't subpar. The thin crackers were OK but not what you expect when you think American Comfort food. No excuse for old soggy vegetables. Chicken soup. $7. Tiny portion of tasteless chicken soup. A few pieces of dry tough chicken. Flavorless noodles. The kind of soup you would expect at a cheap dinner.....not the Marriott. Expected generous portion of bread and butter with the soup instead of a few thin crackers. Look at the soup in the picture I uploaded....it doesn't even look good. Chili (vegetarian) $7. Extremely bland with the sauce thin and the beans slightly undercooked. It came with a tiny cornmeal muffin that was far worse than what you could make from a cornmeal muffin mix. The cornmeal muffin was dry and stale. Look at the picture I uploaded to see how tiny it was. Even if fresh and good it was too small. Sadly they say this restaurant is American comfort food. The portion size was stingy on all the items. Comfort food should have generous portions. I've heard of restaurants offering small portions with the idea that they're making you healthier by giving you less calories to eat. But this restaurant gave you small portions of raw vegetables that are good for you and have few calories. Look at the picture I uploaded of the vegetable plate and tell me that's comfort food. How much would it have cost to throw away the old vegetables they gave us and give a generous portion of FRESH vegetables. There will be changes in the future. Marriott management will do what is needed to bring this restaurant up to Marriott quality. In the meantime go to the Gaslamp Marriott for decent food. Or any of the other excellent restaurants downtown. read more

So I went to the bar after hours during SDCC. Mind you, it's not their best moment; they probably hire temp workers to address the crowd at the bar that's a fact of life during Comic-Con. I went to a bartender named Keih who looked like who was overworked. After looking at the menu I noticed that they had a cocktail that had absinthe in it. I'm sort of an absinthe connoisseur, and St. George absinthe is some of the more above-average stuff. So I ask Keith if I could just have some absinthe. He told me that absinthe was terrible and that they only used it to line the glass (I assumed he thought it was only something used in mixed drinks, like vermouth). Apparently, this guy didn't know much about absinthe, which was a shame but not surprising given the temp bartenders that get hired during SDCC. So I threw him a low pitch. I decided that I needed some energy with my alcohol and told him to just get me a Jaeger Bomb. My friend who was with me ordered a shot of bulleit rye. The order should have been easy. Instead he comes back with two shots, one Jeagermeister and one bulleit rye, and asks if I need anything else. I said, "Yes, I'd like the Red Bull for my Jaeger Bomb please." Keith tell s me I didn't order a Jeager Bomb, and I told him that I did. The two gentlemen waiting for drinks next to me are becoming amused by Keith, but I'm starting to lose my patience. We comes back with my Jeager Bomb and the receipt for $28. He does NOT give me the rest of the can of Red Bull. At $28 for two shots and a little Red Bull, I expected to at least get the rest of the can. But Keith says he can't do that. I paid up and left. Then I noticed that the commissary just down the hall had a decent 40oz microbrew for a fraction of what I just paid for at the bar, which by all accounts was terrible service from a person who knew little to nothing about bar-tending or customer service. Again, I understand this was during SDCC, but I felt that the prices were increased for the con without a commensurate amount of professionalism to go along with the steep prices. If I'm going to low-brow it in the future, I'll just head out to one of the dives in the Gaslamp. read more

Went here on a Sunday morning for brunch. Had the buffet which was an average buffet. Decent and definitely does the job! Absolutely terrible service. Not at all busy for a Saturday night; for fun, after the waitress told us that she herself was serving 20 tables by her lonesome, we walked around and counted only about 20 occupied tables -- now, when there is more than one server, and 20 tables, how could our waitress have all of them assigned to her? Slavery? Or maybe she was trying to excuse herself because it took her a good long time -- 15 min -- before showing up with menus after we were seated. It all went downhill from there. Suffice to say that we waited 1 hour and 40 minutes before leaving the restaurant without eating anything but one seared ahi tuna appetizer (four small pieces only for nearly $20) which one person had ordered. This is after we tried repeatedly to get someone, anyone's attention -- waitress, hostess, then one manager, then another manager, then finally head supervisor. First two managers promised to check with the kitchen "right away" (their words -- maybe it's a script). The very first manager we pleaded with disappeared, never to come back. The second manager looked us straight in the eye, said, "I will personally check on your food with the kitchen right away!" -- and then proceeded to do nothing. How did we know? Because we monitored him the entire time after we asked him, and saw him (1) fiddling with the register, (2) talking to other employees (no, he didn't send anyone back to check on our food), (3) talking to other seated diners -- everything and anything except for checking on our order. Why tell us that -- why lie -- when you're standing in an open restaurant? Maybe the food is good -- I don't know, because we walked away starving -- but the service is the worst I've had in my life. read more

Went for the Sunday brunch with the family. Pretty standard hotel brunch, nothing terrible but nothing special. Everything you would expect at a hotel brunch, eggs, pastries, potatoes, etc. The two stand out items were the beef bacon (had never tried it but it was fantastic, crispy and chewy, but with a totally different taste than pork bacon), and the cheddar and bacon biscuits, which must have weighted a pound each. The biscuits were OUTRAGEOUS! Should just have made brunch out of those! Not a bad setting, looking over the Marriott pool towards San Diego Bay and I have to say, I'm impressed with how the Marriott has put money into updating an older property that could have been very kitschy but actually was quite modern and pleasant. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how good this place was for being a restaurant in a hotel. Their fried chicken with maple vinegar was super delicious. My friend had a burger here and said it was the best burger he'd ever had, compared to burgers we've had in the past. I had the mahi-mahi burger and it was okay, but I kinda wish it had a bit more flavor. For being packed and busy during Comic Con, the service was decent. Prices are standard, about $11-$20 depending on what you order. But the convenience was worth it. And they're open till about 2 am (at least when we were there). read more

Ate dinner here. Decor was very impressive and service was super friendly and on top of their game. Had some amazing mussels as an appetizer, and for an entree had some gnocchi that was delicious. The seasoning on the gnocchi was excellent, and it was cooked so that it was firm, rather than being somewhat soggy in a creamy sauce like you so often get. The roasted vegetables served with it were a perfect compliment and were full of flavor. I also tried my friend's steak, which had a very impressive rub that was smoky and salty. I also tried my wife's turkey pot pie(I eat off of other people's plates a lot), which was the culinary highlight of the evening. It was a perfect dish and was like having all the best parts of thanksgiving wrapped up into a single bite. For drinks, they had a very well selected beer list with all kinds of good local stuff. They also had wine from a keg, which I had never had before. I had a Rhone-style blend from Tablas Creek in Paso Robles. It was delicious, and apparently allows them to serve higher quality wine at a lower price point. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, and will hopefully be coming here again soon. The experience was top-notch. read more

Went to the Marina Kitchen for lunch, to get out of the sun at the pool. I have restricted things I can eat, so had to get creative on the menu. I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich (no salt), avocado, lettuce. And a side salad. The side salad was so fresh and so amazing! But the chicken was one of the best I have ever had. Turns out it was a Jidori chicken breast, free range, etc. But was cooked perfectly. The bun was toasted to perfection, and the avocado blended so well with the Dijon mustard I had it with! Compliments to the chef! read more

Just don't. Don't put yourself through this. I can confidently say Marina Kitchen is the WORST fine dining experience I ever had. And I love fine dining, and have checked out many an upscale place in many cities. Yes you read the reviews of the Yelpers saying the food was fantastic..but in a city with many many good fine dining restaurants with impeccable service, and the fact Marina Kitchen cites itself as upscale dining, good food is simply not enough. Why pay for this (expensive!!) when you can go to Bo Beau or Seersucker and have good food AND an excellent time. I also happen to be a management consultant that had to dine at many a hotel restaurant..shame on you Marriot. Worst hotel restaurant service ever. The night started off fine, with my husband and I meeting his colleague for dinner at 7 pm. His colleague had to go for a massage at 9 pm. Timing seemed fine, we made reservations...not an unreasonable timeline..right..RIGHT? It took almost half an hour before the Waitress got to our table. She exasperately said she was waiting on twenty tables, and was therefore overwhelmed. She forgot to mention her name. I'm not sure that was right...seemed to be plenty of space when we came in. But even if the kichen is busy, this is a HOTEL restaurant hosting a convention that is near a convention space, aren't you supposed to be prepared for a busy situation? We finally order our food...and we wait..and wait...and WAIT. One hour in with no food, I am extremely hungry. The waitress does not check in with us. We ask another waitress that we want to talk to a manager. He takes a long time to come after we request twice, after hearing our woe, he says he'll check with the kitchen. We wait, and wait. He NEVER COMES BACK. My husband's colleague then walks up to another manager at the cash register. We explain the situation. With a blase look on his face he says he will go check with the kitchen. I look at him for the next 20 minutes..the whole entire time he makes no movement to check. He just keeps talking to someone else and staring at the computer screen. No apology, no movement, just uncaringness. At this point..I am thinking..THESE PEOPLE DON'T GIVE TWO HOOTS..THEY DON'T CARE. I have never experienced such service before ever. I understand if the kitchen is overwhelmed. But neither waitress, nor two managers had the decent courtesy to come back and just give a simple explanation..e.g. we are overwhelmed, we are sorry..and by the way here are some free drinks while you wait! nothing..seriously NOTHING. It was worst than the local thai restaurant! At least the waitress there smiles at you! One and a HALF hours..90 minutes in...still no food. I am so angry at that point I leave..and go to Bo Beau. Where I drank copious amounts of wine and spent tons of money to make up for having such a lousy time. I feel sorry for the friends who experienced a massage hungry. so my question to you is WHY? WHY would you spend money to go here? Who cares bout the food? Its not a 3 michelin star restaurant. Just go somewhere else! Just save yourself the agony. Marriot..you need to up your level of service. I'm glad I stuck to Starwood and Hyatt hotels. read more

I came here for my birthday dinner with 10 friends a few weeks ago, had never heard of the restaurant before my girlfriend picked it out for the dinner.......shame most locals don't have the awareness of the good restaurants in hotels (I'm in the travel.industry so get to enjoy many restaurants most people probably just walk by all the time, oblivious to the yummy goodness that awaits you inside). We started with a few appetizers to share, the ahí tuna tartar, the grilled cheese bites, the shrimp cocktail and the oysters. All very good but the grilled cheese bites and the tartar was out of this world. I believe we ended up ordering more of the cheese bites. For the entrees we had a wide range from the rib eye, prime rib and gnocchi but it was clear which dish (surprisingly so) was the concensus best, the MK Burger. I am mostly paleo so eat a lot of meat and have a few burgers (bunless of course) so I know when a burger is made with good meat, this burger was so good that my friend actually squealed (yes, squealed) when he took his first bite. I mean how can you go wrong with truffle gouda and bacon on a burger!?!?! Not like we weren't feeling fat enough at this point but we went ahead and ordered desert as well, people got and seemed to enjoy the double fudge brownie and the doughnuts, i got the bread pudding and it was scrumptious! Normally where I'm hesitant about a place is the service but we were attended to at all times, drinks never empty, food never sat there for long before they took it away, water refilled often, they were on point that night.......could be because they seemed to be pretty dead for a Saturday night but I don't care! Buon appetito! read more

My boyfriend and I came to San Diego for New Years weekend and stayed at the Marriott Marquis. Seeing the good reviews on Yelp, we thought we should give the place a try since it was inside our hotel. We went here for dinner on New Years Day and were surprised that it wasn't too busy. I will start off by saying, this place is very pricy which we anticipated. The hostess was great and gave us every option available for seating except the window views which were all taken. Our waitress, Jenna, was very friendly at first and made sure we had all of our questions answered in detail. We ordered a couple of glasses of wine per Jenna's suggestions and the truffle fries as an appetizer. The truffle fries were so delicious! My boyfriend ordered the Grilled Jidori Chicken Paillard which he raved was the best chicken he had had in a while. I ordered the Cioppino which had the option of adding fettuccini noodles to it which Jenna had said adds a little heartiness to the dish so I opted for fettuccini to be added with the knowledge of an extra $4.00 charge. Our food arrived in about 20 minutes from a different server and I noticed quickly after that my dish did not have fettuccini added. We waited for almost 10 minutes to catch Jenna who avoided our table the whole time so we flagged down another waitress. Jenna finally came out and we let her know that the fettuccini was not added. She said 'oh well I'll go get a bowl for you'. In my experience if my food isn't prepared how I ordered it originally then you are to take back my whole plate away and correct it and present it how it was ordered. At this time of waiting for the fettuccini my boyfriend was long done with his meal and I hadn't even dug into my food yet. As I filled up on fries, Jenna finally came out with my noodles after another 10 minutes and my other dish was already cold. I dumped the noodles into the bowl of overcooked seafood and the noodles were so raw I couldn't even finish it. I got a to-go box since I felt guilty for not even eating anything. Jenna still charged us the extra $4.00 for the fettuccini and never even apologized. If it weren't for us sitting there for over an hour and a half, we would've asked to speak to the manager and had that meal taken off our bill. My boyfriend still tipped Jenna very well but I don't think that kind of service should be that largely rewarded. Do not go to this restaurant if you are hoping to have your order as you ordered it and if you are planing anything else for the night. Very disappointed. After dinner we visited Roy's Hawaiian Fusion restaurant just outside the hotel by the pool for dessert and we ordered the Hawaiian donuts and the Oreo crusted ice cream cake. Both desserts were a lot of food but so so so amazing. We even ordered at the bar outside on a chilly night and we were the only customers outside. The bartender took our orders and was so sweet and totally on it even though she was filling a ton of drink orders from inside the restaurant. Try Roy's instead they even have outdoor fire pits. The food is unreal! read more

I stayed at the Marriott and went to the Marina Kitchen inside the hotel twice. The first time was for dinner. I wasn't too hungry so I had the burrata appetizer. The cheese and bread seemed good, but I was barely able to taste it because the toppings were kind of overpowering. I think the menu said there was tomato with it but I only noticed kumquat jam and something else that seemed like crystallized ginger--2 things that have super strong flavors. The menu mentioned some greens that come with it but truly there were a few microgreens sprinkled on top. It was tasty but not necessarily my favorite burrata app ever. My husband had filet mignon and raved about it. With a few glasses of wine, the bill came to $120. The 2nd time we had the white wine flight and foccacia with butter and tomato oil for dipping. That was beyond excellent. read more

I was in SD the day I was graduating with my Masters and my parents, boyfriend and I needed a quick place to go to grab some lunch. Marina Kitchen was a less than 5 minute walk from the San Diego Convention Center, so we decided to stop here for a quick lunch. I ordered a soup and salad combo. Food was pretty spot on and I enjoyed it. I did, however, get a stomach ache afterwards. Not sure if it was the food or anxiety, but I got one. My parents and boyfriend enjoyed their food for the most part too. Prices were a bit too expensive for what we got (about $14 a person). It should have been about half of that. They do serve alcohol if needed and the view for the restaurant is pretty nice. Cheers!! read more

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis San Diego this last weekend for a friend's birthday and ended up at the Marina Kitchen at least 4 seperate times. The first night, we were all just meeting there before heading out to the Gaslamp District - we had a Margarita Pizza and some beers. The pizza was pretty good, and they have some great craft beers on draft and by the bottle. We ended up back here that same night around 12:30am and ordered the Short Rib Sliders, Grilled Cheese Bites, and fries. The Short Rib Sliders were seriously delicious. The Grilled Cheese Bites and fries were solid, but those sliders were to die for! We went again for lunch the next day and ordered burgers and the chicken sandwich. Both were HUGE and very good. This is technically their hotel restaurant and bar, but it seemed like more than that. The service was impeccable and prices were all reasonable. I would come back just to sit at the bar and eat the Short Rib Sliders and enjoy a Dogfish Head 90 Minute. read more

Enjoyed an excellent dinner tonight at Marina Kitchen. This is *FAR* from the usual Marriott dining. First, the dining room has a warm feeling with honey colored walls and lots of wood... it's very inviting. We asked for an out of the way table, and we were immediately accommodated. We were seated in an area all by ourselves, even thought it was dinner time and the restaurant was otherwise busy. No one complained, or said that the area was closed (as we would typically expect to hear). Our server, Monica, was attentive, well-informed, and enthusiastic about the restaurant's menu. The sommelier was friendly, helpful and we enjoyed chatting with him. I enjoyed the roasted beet salad. The focaccia bread is delish, and the tomato pesto is so good... I wish I could take home a jar of it. We enjoyed a very nice meal here. read more

This should be a 2.5. When you're charging me almost $20 for a "meh" gin martini, and kindly OFFER me blue cheese stuffed olives, I assume they're part of the martini vs choosing to charge me an additional $2.00 is ridiculous, especially when it's the cheapest and waxiest of blue cheese. If there's an up-charge, tell the customer in advance. (Yes, I hear how d-baggy this all sounds, but it's the next morning And I'm still upset about it.) read more

Oh God, so disappointing. You're lucky I was too inebriated to care that night. We came here to catch a quick dinner before starting our Gaslamp adventures. Since it was New Year's Eve, we already knew that getting a table anywhere else is pretty nightmarish so we wanted convenience since it was just below our rooms. The restaurant was empty so there was no wait and we got seated right away. Sadly, that was the only speedy thing that happened that night. After getting seated, we waited maybe 10-15 minutes for our waiter to come and greet us. Since it took him so long to come, we already had made our decisions with the menu and were able to order right away. After waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting some more, we finally got our food. I ordered the egg sandwich and the bf ordered the fish and chips. The fish and chips should have been called fish sticks because that's basically what it was!! Cafeteria style fish sticks instead of big fish pieces. My egg sandwich was basically egg with bacon on toast. I thought it was a sandwich but where's the other piece of toast? It's basically an open face. -_- After a disappointing meal, it took another 10-15 minutes for him to get our check and finalize our bill. For a "quick" meal, it turned out to be almost more than an hour!!! I get it, it's New Years Eve, but c'mon, that's ridiculous!! Anyways, if you don't mind overpaying for some cafeteria food and waiting forever for your food and bill, then yea! Definitely come try this place! NOT!!!! read more

My boyfriend and I stumbled upon this place, both starving and needing a little food before a night of partying for Halloween weekend. We ordered truffle fries that were amazing and a really tasty pizza. I think it had caramelized onions, but alas I cant remember the name of the pizza and really should have written this review sooner. Anyway I am pretty sure any of there pizzas would be great because it has the really yummy thin crust. That with a couple of beers, how can you complain! Furthermore, they have a great happy hour (forgive me I forget what day) but bottles of wine are half price. The only thing that I would change is our service was a little slow, the table we sat at was almost on top of the two tables next to us, and the parking! Good luck with parking over here people. It's not easy! If this was closer to my side of town you would definitely find me here. NOM! read more
