Had dinner at Maru WeHo with a friend last night and we had such a great experience. The space has a modern, minimalist aesthetic with cool clay-gray walls and a clean, elevated feel that makes it perfect for a casual dinner or a night out. Parking is somewhat limited in the front, but there's a free lot in the back. The staff was attentive, kind, and kept everything moving at a great pace throughout the meal. The menu is extensive, with plenty of options whether you're craving sushi, small plates, warm dishes, or specialty rolls. We started with the spicy edamame, which definitely lives up to its name, followed by the seaweed salad that was light, refreshing, and a nice contrast to some of the richer dishes. The standout of the night for me was the crispy rice. Absolutely heavenly bites that are perfectly crisp with incredible flavor and texture. We also shared the Baked Volcano Roll and the Hot Gabby Roll, and I enjoyed them in that order, though both were delicious. I ordered an Old Fashioned. It was a bit sweeter than I prefer, so next time I'd likely try something else from their cocktail menu. Overall, Maru WeHo delivers on atmosphere, service, and a wide variety of flavorful dishes. The crispy rice alone is worth the visit, and I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu. read more

I chose this restaurant on a whim from Yelp when I was hanging out in the Green Hills area, then drove over without knowing much about it. Parking was easy, and the inside was clean and modern. Rahul greeted me and took me to a table along the wall so I could sit on the cushy booth side. He explained the menu as a mash-up of the top five dishes from each of the Maru locations, a regional restaurant group led by a woman entrepreneur. I started with a Sapporo on draft and got carded, which made me smile. With the cold crisp beer in hand, I ordered from the regular and specials menus (after learning uni has sold out): Baja fresh maki (spicy tuna, green onion, cilantro, jalapeno, avocado, yellowtail) with ponzu 1 order (2 pieces) of ora king salmon nigiri 1 order (2 pieces) of otoro (fatty tuna belly) 1 negitoro temaki 1 spicy scallop temaki From the original order, the spicy scallop temaki and baja fresh roll came out first. The accompaniments included real wasabi, which was not listed on the menu, so that part was not my favorite, However, the scallop was fresh and flavorful. The baja fresh roll was so decicious, and I ate it all before the next food was ready! When the nigiri platter arrived, I learned the otoro was also unavailable so it was substituted with chutoro (medium fatty tuna). This was still beautiful and fresh, and I appreciated the honesty. I was only charged for regular maguro and not the price of the special. The chutoro was seasoned by the chef and very flavorful. The ora king salmon was delicious too, but I did need a tiny bit of soy sauce on it to counterbalance the wasabi. The negitoro temaki was absolutely oishi! It led me to order one more temaki, the spicy yellowtail, and I requested no fresh wasabi since it was listed as an ingredient on the menu. I enjoyed this last bite while chatting with Rahul and learning more about him. He then surprised me with some strawberry and pineapple mochi for my birthday week! Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere, the great service, and the high quality food. There is a huge menu so it would be fun to come back with more people. Itadakimasu! read more

A great little hidden gem in a new development by the fairgrounds. We went on a Friday evening around 6:30 without a reservation and got a table fine. It's a nice place, not huge but a good size and a small patio. The service was friendly and food came out quickly. We got a couple of the appetizers: crispy rice tuna, shrimp and veggie tempura, and gyoza. I also got the Yaki udon noodles. It was a little on the sweet side for me but otherwise tasty and a good portion. It was all delicious and the prices were reasonable. They also offer an Omakase with reservations so I'll definitely be back for that! A great place to meet friends or date night. The parking lot is tiny though so you'll most likely have to use the paid lot across the street. read more

Uni was very fresh and the rolls were delicious. Tonkatsu Ramen was awesome; the pork katsu was cooked perfectly. My yuzu highball, unfortunately, was lacking the yuzu syrup for sure. However, I was able to get extra yuzu syrup to remedy the cocktail. I really want to give this place a 5 star since the food was great. However, I think the service was lacking a little bit. There seemed to be only 2 people working the night we were there but the place wasn't even close to being half full; maybe 4-5 small tables (2 people) max. We had to wait for quite some time to order the entrees after we were done with the appetizers. We also had to wait and flagged the girl down like the couple next to us to get our check. We have been to the Maru east location more than 10 times and love it for great quality sushi and friendly service but the atmosphere isn't the most special. We live close to Wedgewood so we were excited to try this location that recently opened, and it did not disappoint! Service was fantastic and the inside felt really upscale and had great vibes. The gyoza and Japanese fried chicken were both great albeit not mind blowing. The sushi was the star of the show which is the same for their location in east Nashville. The playboy and shrimp tempura we would happily order again! We are excited to come back and try more small plates and different sushi rolls soon. Great addition to the neighborhood. read more

I had the best sushi lunch date here! I ordered the Salmon roll and Captains Secret! The captain secret might be the best sushi I've had in my life. The ingredients were so fresh and the roll was flavorful. My husband had the hot night roll as well as a roll that had scallops on top. The Hot night roll was our fav of the two. Drink wise, the espresso martini, grapefruit soju and the lemon drop martini were all phenomenal! The service was great and our waiter was attentive and helpful. I was really excited to try this place. Visiting from California for a few weeks and I took a gamble with a 5star with only 2 reviews, but I'm a sushi connoisseur and a risk taker. The ambience was nice, newer modern feel in an upcoming east Nashville area. The place was relatively empty, a man at the bar, a girl at the other ends and two hotties having dinner at a table. Not a good sign. I sat at a table my back to a bench seat. Service was fast and cordial. My server a young man with a great attitude but a little green. First up, I order some yellowtail carpaccio, the young man advises of a special item, baby yellowtail in a ginger ponzu sauce, I am glad he did, because it was to die for. I'd come back just for that dish. See pic. I also ordered some chicken and some yakitori, some different nigiri and a roll. Now at this point you may ask, White, if it was soo good why 3 stars? Good question. I ordered my go to faves, nigiri of yellowtail, salmon, and tuna. I also ordered the Baja roll just to have some filler and something with spice. I was expecting The nigiri to be fresh cuts of fish on top of sushi rice, however they came with different sauces, toppings and even seared with mayo on top. I asked the young man, why it was served like that and his response was the chef likes to give it to you with different options as he likes. I was not happy, I love just the fish and may some slight soy or a little wasabi but this way no good and it was ruined. Unfortunately the young man forgot to place my chicken yakitori order so I never got it and I was looking forward to trying it. I asked the young man how long they have been opened he said 1 month. I kindly shared some feedback about the food and let him know they will need to do better if they expect repeat customers and to stand out in a very foodie city like Nashville. The fact that the kid didn't even offer to take some of items off the bill or maybe a dessert tells me they still haven't learned the most important lesson in restauranting, happy customers, make repeat customers. This place has a lot of work to do but I would say give them a try and let's see if my experience was an anomaly and I was just an unfortunate victim of new growing pains. When we asked for a refill of our sake, they didn't have a cold bottle to offer us. Additionally, service was terrible. They are clearly understaffed and we waited at least 30 min or more for them to make us a secondary roll after we waited 30 min for our original order. They apologized, but offered nothing to make up for this extreme waste of time. Ambiance was basic, cold and industrial. For a $240 meal that included a 20% tax (which we are still trying to figure out), I've had better value, quality, and service at 888 or elsewhere -- you could easily do better for cheaper and cozier at other places. I am a resident of Orlando, Florida, and I recently visited a place called Maru while on a business trip here in Nashville. If anyone reads this post, I highly recommend you come and try it! The part that impressed me the most--though it seems very simple but is often overlooked in many Japanese restaurants--is that the seaweed used in the sushi actually smells and tastes like fresh seaweed. I was so curious that I asked the server, and they confirmed that the restaurant uses a very high-quality type of nori (seaweed). The wasabi is also incredibly delicious. It's not made from powdered wasabi; it's fresh, so even eating it alone isn't overly spicy and has a subtle sweet note. When paired with the sushi, it beautifully refreshes the palate. The rice was perfectly cooked. It wasn't sticky; the grains were just chewy enough, and it was seasoned perfectly, without tasting oily or overly salty. The chef seemed to focus on making sure the finish (aftertaste) was bright and refreshing. I ordered a variety of menu items, and each dish had a pleasant, crisp finish, allowing us to fully enjoy the food without getting tired of the taste. Because of this, my wife and I ended up ordering too many dishes! Have you ever tried fried kale with sashimi? You absolutely must try it here. I learned for the first time that day that kale could be this delicious and pair so wonderfully with sushi. The Ramen was also special. Japanese ramen is usually seasoned to flavor the noodles, not necessarily for drinking the broth, which often leaves the soup too salty for my taste--a shame because I love broth. However, the ramen here is not salty. I could drink every drop of the soup. The broth was clear, clean, and has a taste that I know I'll miss. I hope many people visit this place to experience the flavors. The interior design was also wonderful. It was cozy and clean, giving couples and partners a warm, comfortable, and peaceful feeling. This place is not to be slept on. We have tried dozens of sushi restaurants in Nashville, and this one surprised us. The atmosphere is great--it's brand new, clean, and sleek. We tried an assortment of dishes across the menu, which is also quite vast. The crispy rice was hands down our favorite rendition of this dish in the city. The bulgogi surprised us as well and tasted more authentic than other versions we've had in Nashville. I was particularly impressed with the Nigiri, which is on a short list of my favorite bites of sushi I've ever had (a list that includes Michelin star sushi bars).
