I'm always attracted to well crafted wood. But what really got my attention were the pieces made from the teak deck of the USS Missouri. There were cufflinks, ornaments, pens, frames, & just pieces of engraved decking. Other pieces of artwork, including paintings. But the largest portion was based around wood. Pricing was spread from what you might expect to higher end products. We bought a nice koa wood box and had it shipped to our home. Shipping was way expensive. But a convenient option - I don't have to worry about traveling with it. read more

We had a disappointing experience at Martin & MacArthur Ala Moana this past weekend. My fiance and I stopped in on Saturday evening to buy his wedding band. He really loves the koa wood and cobalt ring. We had been in several times previously to try on, but today was the day we were set to purchase, as we had just bought my wedding band at Macy's. As we were being helped by a nice gentlemen, he was quickly whisked away to help another customer. No biggie - so we started working with another woman. No sooner than we asked a question or two that she told us, "I'm sorry, someone else is going to need to help you now. Do you seem them over there? They are the prince of Morocco's entourage, and we want to make sure to take REALLY great care of them." She gave us a look as if to say, "you understand." We both felt as if we had been slapped in the face. I understand the need to take great care of customers, but I didn't feel that that same courtesy was being extended to us. It seemed as if the prince's entourage was more important. If his business superseded others' business in the store, then they should have paid to close the store and have a private shopping experience. Instead we were getting juggled around by associates and had the insult to injury comment. The saving grace was Mitsue who stepped in and graciously answered our questions whilst the other employees fawned over the entourage's needs, even asking questions like, "How often do you come to Hawaii?" and "Where else do you plan on shopping today?" The whole experience made us feel like chopped liver. We left without purchasing my fiance's ring. Shame on you, Martin & MacArthur Ala Moana! You very clearly have your sales goals in mind while prioritizing high spending dignitaries over those who are local and would likely patronize your business for life. read more

Keri the store manager was generous with her time and when another customer needed help, the VP of M&M Darlene stepped in and helped. We ended up getting a beautiful piece and grabbed a few more items. A Koa would heart pendant , a nice pen and a ceramic koi fish from a local artist on Maui. For some reason, I've always felt intimidated to go inside of Martin & MacArthur because it seemed like it would be out of my price range. However, last week I went in here to get out of the rain and was pleasantly surprised with this store. Yes, there are things here that are pretty pricey... For example, I was looking at a razor with a koa handle that was about $200+ dollars. However, there are also items that are less than $100 like their koa bracelets ($75). The great thing about this place is that they sell well-made, quality products that are absolutely beautiful. I have a few weddings this summer, and I know that I'll probably be coming here for gifts. Pros: -Beautiful koa items -Knowledgeable staff -Quality koa products Cons: -Items can be pricey, but you get what you pay for -Limited return policy. I believe you only have 7 days to return items and items cannot be altered. I love coming into this store...it's an art gallery yet there are pieces in here that are also functional for daily use. Being that this store in located in Ala Moana Center (near Macy's), it is highly accessible to local and visitor traffic. The salespeople are friendly and informative about the various artists who are featured in the store and their artwork. Usually, you see more foreign visitors in here looking for that "special" piece of art to bring home. Admittedly, the items in this store are not inexpensive or cheap. These are pieces that were lovingly, artfully conceived and created through true woodworking craftsmanship. Koa (acacia koa) is grown ONLY in Hawaii and differs from island to island. It was prized by the ali'i and monarchs of Hawaii. Koa was the name for ancient Hawaiian warriors and means "brave, bold and fearless". It is a hardwood which ancient Hawaiians used to make combat weapons and is endemic to Hawaii, hence, the wood was called "koa". Besides making weapons from this hardwood, the ancients used koa to make bowls, canoes and paddles. When Westerners settled into the Kingdom of Hawaii, koa was selected to build many of the great plantation homes and churches in old Hawaii, furniture and surfboards. The Martin & MacArthur names in Hawaii are quite synonymous with their use of acacia koa wood and master craftsmanship. They have been in business for over 50 years, longer than any other woodworking craftsmen in Hawaii. KRAVE KOA? ~~~~~~~~~~~ Koa wood is among one of the most beautiful woods around that are made into artistic and/or quality items. Koa wood gifts are commonly used locally for significant life changing events & honors. I still treasure my amazing engraved Koa Box that we all received when we graduated from JABSOM (John A. Burn's School of Medicine) @ UH Manoa. The last time I shopped here, I picked up an amazing curly wood Koa walking cane, that was a great, but pricey ($300) replacement, for a cheap $15 folding Rite Aid cane. I was in town for the APA medical conference at the Convention Center. I took the opportunity to visit old friends, & tried to walk to, many of the places, that evoked all kinds of memories, along with quite a bit of pain. At that time, I was still pre-op for my later major back surgery, so I had severe Neuropathic pain in my right leg, especially with walking.... thus I needed a good cane, that also looked better than a plastic piece of junk. Until you really need one, you cannot imagine how hard it is to find classy looking ones. This one was very classy, yet functional. Whenever I stopped by here, I would almost always pick up another set of Koa Chopsticks. Since you cannot trust Amazon or anyone to pick & send you what you may think is a good pair....you just have to do it in person. Once you get to sizes that are bigger than a "breadbox", you are certain to drop some serious coin. Most of it is overpriced here, but if you are not sticking around long, they will pack it nicely & ship it to the mainland. I did have a very nice curly wood bowl, done by a local artist sent to the mainland, without a problem. Like so many places in Ala Moana, they try to hard sell you on the products.....which do not need it, since they are so nice....and so expensive. Once again, you are treated as a "dumb" tourist even if you are not.... but I guess that is how they pay the crazy rents here. If you are passing through, they sure do have a nice sweet spot in the $100-500 range for quality gifts. This is definitely not a 99 Cents store! BTW- unless you are willing to part with many thousands of dollars do not even bother to consider Koa furniture. At these prices, it would likely be better to commission someone local to make one to your specs... read more

I passed by and saw some beautiful wooden necklace. Cost was around $400. We have bought wooden boxes here before for presents - but I really like these necklaces. I tried one on and a elderly Japanese sales person removed it from my hands. Told me to buy it if I was interested. I was a little bit shocked. She then put the necklace back on the shelve. Not sure why she did this. Maybe because I am a local. Never treated like this at this store before. Decided to shop else where. I thought I didn't want her to get any commission from me. read more

Their wood is fine and shiny, clean, slick. Items are expensive though but its expected being a unique jewelry shop. The retail is wood, koa wood to be exact. Koa wood is beautiful. Wood especially Koa wood is hard to find and when made into jewelry and mixed with metal, to me I'd prefer to look at it compared to basic jewelry. And I don't wear like to wear jewelry. All the employees are nice and friendly, when you buy they wrap items nicely as a gift. As for my ratings, I had to average it out. I really want to buy another koa ring with black metal instead of silver. 5***** for my watch and koa ring. I wear them out only on special occasions, mainly cuz the first week I wore my ring I scratched it. So I usually use my qalo ring instead. 1* for the koa clock I bought. It was expensive for a small clock. I give it a 1* because the battery only lasted a couple weeks and the clock won't work now. BUT the manager of the store helped me with my problem when I brought my clock in. He was assessing the clock and noted the battery was dead, he instead gave me a new one to replace. I was in Hawaii back in April with a high school band that I work with on a Spring Break trip and tour. After we sent the kids home, my fiance and I stayed with some local friends for a few days, and when the subject of wedding rings came up, they told us to check out this place. I am so glad they did, this store is gorgeous, the Koa wood stuff is amazing. We walked in, and nearly immediately Anthony was at our service. Anthony was awesome! I looked at a Koa Wood Eternity Ring, but since I still wanted to check out a few other options, I did not buy it that day, After looking at a few other ideas and researching rings in general, I decided I did in fact want the Koa Wood ring, but I did not remember what size I wore. I got sized in a local San Jose jewelry store, and ordered the Koa Wood ring online. It came fast and secure, it was at my house in California, from Hawaii, in two days. Amazing. Unfortunately, due to my own mistake I ordered the wrong size ring. So, I contacted them about exchanging it. I had a GREAT experience with their customer service, and after sending the first ring back, they sent the correct size out, again, in only a couple days. I HIGHLY recommend this store to anyone looking at this style of ring, or any other of their gorgeous, super interesting Koa Wood items. I have had one of the best costumer service experiences, both at the original store and the warehouse that did the exchange. There are non-koa things as well -- including what I think were fancy purses and such -- but koa wood seemed to be the focus. Last October I bought an eternity ring from the Ala Moana branch of Martin and MacArthur. Having returned to Australia I proceeded to lose a lot of body weight, meaning that the ring was now too big for my finger. I wasn't too hopeful, given that the ring was flawless (other than its size), and the time that had elapsed since the purchase, but I got in touch with Martin and MacArthur to ask if there was anything they could do to help me. Their reaction was way better than I could have hoped for. I had been looking online at purchasing a koa wood watch for a few years, even before entering a location. While on my last visit to Honolulu last week I finally decided to stop in. I was immediately pounced upon by Gizelle, one of the sales people. I wasn't even allowed to look around before she was saying how nice things are here, what I do I want, blah blah blah! I wasn't allowed to browse through the store at all not even making it past the display of wood watches. I did stop and look at some, just to have her immediately but into my conversation I was having with my friend about the watch, again, blah blah blah. She was so rude and pushy that I ended up leaving without venturing into the store further. I waited about 5 days before returiing to the store, It was my last day and was determined to buy a watch. I wanted a koa wood one, but again Gizelle was there right away. I was looking forward to buying a more expensive watch but ended up buying a cheaper "wood" watch. I actually had to say to her, "stop, just let me shop." She did let me browse this time, but just for a few moments before she started up again. I just bought any watch to get out of the store. I didn't get a koa watch like I had wanted. As she rung the sale, there was no interaction from her and she infact took a phone call in which she was totally engrossed in. I never received a thank you, a come again, a fuck you or anything! When I got home to NY, I went online and found that the store also sells wooded pens. I never even knew that since I wasn't allowed to browse in the store comfortably. Ordered a watch from them for my husband's birthday. Believed it to be made in Hawaii, as that's what the website says, and that's why I ordered it (my husband loves Polynesian culture). Received a watch in a Tense watch box (Tense watches are a separate company in Canada) with Tense watch paperwork. The watch itself has the Martin and MacArthur logo on the front. Tried to contact the company but no one called me back. Cannot find an email anywhere on their website. They have a link to one but when you click on it, it goes to a different page. If I had wanted a Tense watch, I could have ordered one identical to the one I bought, but for $80 cheaper. Not happy with this company's obvious deception! read more
