I was visiting the island and initially just window shopping around Chinatown until I stumbled upon Mrs. Kim's beautiful all-natural jade jewelry and larimar bracelets! Her pieces are real and very reasonably priced, sometimes selling for at cost. When I saw her larimar bracelet, I immediately fell in love. I've never seen such a beautiful bracelet before and for only $85 instead of the cutthroat prices usually displayed online and at other stores. Mrs. Kim shared with me that the business is family owned and has been in the family for two generations now, but unfortunately will end with her since her sons don't really have interest in pursuing selling jewelry. I highly recommend anyone who likes crystals, beads, all-natural handmade jewelry and unique accessories to check out Kim Trading because she has so many cool things. Kim Trading is my road to happiness literally as this places is filled with rainbows of bliss for beading, jewelry and the limit is just your imagination. I'd say its' difficult for anyone to beat it's prices with her impressive selections with not just beading but findings and is definitely a great option to always check her out for comparison as I didn't do that and paid dearly for my poor decisions. Located on Maunakea Street directly across from the Marketplace entrance with municipal parking right across the street makes it a super convenient being crafty has it's challenges as I circled and circled not only searching but hoping to see that item to spark that idea bubble in my head. I've been here a handful of times. But I found this place by accident. I initially went to this necklace place in Maunakea Marketplace as my tiger's eye bracelet got very loose and had to replace the band. I walked in the store and asked if they re-strung beads and the male clerk gave me a stern look and glared with his eyes after checking out my bracelet, "You didn't buy that here so we don't do it for you. You need to get your own equipment and do it yourself." I was like "Whatever............." The next thing the male clerk then barks at me "Go across the street!" and he pointed at Kim Trading. As instructed, I walked out of his store and made my way to Kim Trading. This is quite a large store that has so many accessories - - jewelry, beads, pearls, various stones, jade, necklaces, bracelets....you name it! Seems like this place is run by a husband-and-wife team and they both greeted me with a warm smile and asked what I needed. I told them about my loose band and she advised me for $2 and wait a few minutes, she'd replace it for me. Within 5 minutes, I walked out a happy camper after paying my $2. Today I went to see if they could redo my necklace. As a small child my paternal grandmother and mother would always harp on me to wear jade as "protection" from the bad. As a child I did as told but after being teased many years I gave up after junior high and a few years ago have started to wear jade again. You see many Chinese wearing a red or green string around their necks with some pendant and mine had changed from Kelly green to almost white. With the perspiration after my many, many hikes the string had faded and became frayed. When I purchased my lifesaver jade in Oakland Chinatown years ago, the elderly lady custom-made my necklace and was hoping Kim Trading could do so. But they had a better idea - - they had a whole bunch of pre-made ones with different colors!!! So after choosing the color I wanted she snipped my old one off and in a few minutes I had a new necklace. The price: $1. Super reasonable prices. Helpful and friendly customer service. Honest and knowledgeable owners. And...they're open on Sundays! Although my boyfriend and I weren't able to find street parking, we parked in a municipal parking lot. To be 100% honest, we weren't too impressed with the shop during the first 5 minutes. But, serendipitously, two of their frequent customers - shout out to the amazing Miki and Blossom - came in. They gushed about how reasonable the prices were, and what they buy. It sort of made us "buy in" to the shop, and gave the shop some third party credibility. After talking to Miki and Blossom, we basically couldn't get enough. Thien (and his wife, too) were very friendly and helpful, providing excellent customer service. They were also very knowledgeable. I walked out of the store happy as a clam with my beautiful amethyst point ($30), a clear quartz sphere ($15) and a cute rose quartz sphere ($10). I also purchased a rutilated quartz bracelet ($25) and a black garnet bracelet - that he strung for me - (only $4) for protection. These are super reasonable prices, so I definitely appreciate the great value. He even taught me how to string the bracelet, and gave me some needles and string to take home! I like how the string they use for their bracelets are strong and feel very durable. My boyfriend also had a great time, and got a rainbow/watermelon tourmaline tourmaline bracelet ($45), Super 7 bracelet for his mom (only $8) and a garnet bracelet ($4), too. In addition to what we purchased, they also have: jade beads (starting at ~$3) and bangles (starting at ~$8), piyao dogs, and keychains. One of the things I appreciated most about the shop is their honesty. We were looking at one of the bracelets, and Thien said "I'm not too sure if it's real; it might be synthetic Here, come look at this one instead." Typically, I don't give a 5 star rating, but Kim Trading certainly deserves it. I have been shopping at Kim Trading for many years. Around Honolulu there are very few places that offer any decent selection of beads, and most are ridiculously expensive. Kim Trading has a tremendous selection, including unusual beads, and ready to wear pieces from trinkets to elaborate high quality jewelry. The prices are very reasonable, and the owners are so gracious! They do not follow you around, as they do in some stores, but will help if you want, even suggesting beads that will enhance your project. And every time I buy beads, they give me something for free. I went in to buy beads for necklaces for our Church concert, and saw some cute rings. I took mine off, tried on one and totally forgot to put mine back on. I didn't realize until I got home, but they were closing as I left shop, so I called in the morning and they had found my ring and put it aside for me. It wasn't extremely expensive, but it was heavy sterling and had sentimental value. In most other stores it would never have been found. Mahalo nui loa for your honesty and concern. This place is great! There's so much variety. I got a string of moonstone beads for only $9 here. There were many beaded bracelets for only $3-6, while other places sell them for $10 or more. The lady was nice and very helpful. If you're nice to her, you might get a discount. When it was time to pay, she put each of my items into separate decorated bags, then put those in a ziploc, then into a brown bag, and finally in a plastic bag. read more

An AMAZING place to go to for your bead needs. Today was my second time going to this store and I received the same awesome and kind service. The couple is always so nice and willing to help you with anything. They even were kind enough to show me how to make bracelets and gave me some plastic beads to practice with before I use my actual gem beads. And of course the husband looked for something to give to my kids as a free gift. I've been going to Kim's Trading for a couple of years now. The selection of beads is exceptional, exceeding that of other places in Chinatown I've visited, and the prices are very good. They offer a selection of different types and qualities of beads, focusing primarily on small bulk quantities. During my last visit I focused on some lovely pearls. My 30 year old son, whom I brought for the first time, snapped up turquoise. Their range of jade bracelets is an education in itself! Kim's also offers a lot of handworked jewelry that is affordable, making nice gifts for friends you'd care to remember. More important that the things, though, are the people. One senses the importance of family and friends among those who run this shop. The young man who oversees things has been very good to me: he's offered me advice and recommended small, ingenious tools to improve the ease of my beading. At first I went there for the selection. Now I go because the people behind the selection are knowledgeable, caring, and good business people. This is one of my favorite stores anywhere. Kims Trading is the best bead shop within ALL the islands. The reason is that she has the most extensive inventory of unsual beads in very inexpensive price range and she has a huge inventory to choose from. She is trained to make custom necklaces from whatever you choose to buy and to arrange them how you like, then she will custom string and knot them, either while you wait, or if its complicated you can pick things up usually in a few days. I have worked with her for 3 years and I am continually amazed by how devoted she is and talented and honest to work with. I just gave my 8 staff members the beautiful pearl necklaces that I bought from Kim's Trading and they were absolutely thrilled. The price I paid was incredibly reasonable which is what allowed me to treat them in the first place. Normally I wouldn't be giving my staff pearl necklaces. I also purchased some jade, and a higher quality set of pearls for my sister, and all these were personally restrung for me with knots between each one (only cost a couple dollars extra to have them strung this way). They look like the pearls at my local Costco that cost more than ten times the amount I paid. Although I don't bead, this store is a beaders paradise as well. The couple who own the store are very helpful and not pushy at all. I appreciate that the price of each item is actually on the item, so one doesn't have to ask every time. It makes it so much easier to shop. I will return on my next trip to Honolulu for sure. Highly recommend this place for very reasonable, beautiful pearls. read more
