We were in the mood for pizza during our first time in Ardmore, on the way to an event. Looking back, we should've just parked at the event and assessed what was closest to that venue. Inside was just, depressing. Quiet, no music, like 2 other guests in the whole place, the TVs were playing wheel of fortune (?). It just felt so stale and sad. The pizza was just awful. Like, "you should be ashamed of yourself" bad. Everything from the crust, to the toppings to the sauce, felt prepackaged and out of a can. Nothing redeeming about it, at all. The dining room is cozy but able to fit a lot of people, and the bar area is more lively while still having room for a decent dinner crowd. We got a small regular pie and a large pepperoni but they looked the same size. The price for both was $40. Literally highway robbery. I don't mind paying the price if it was good pizza but we ended up having 2 slices and threw away the rest. Dominos, Pizza Hut, papa John's, and school pizza is better than this place. The sauce is a bright, tomato flavored coating without too much spice and maybe a hint of sweetness. Because it was Pi day, it seemed appropriate to have pizza for dinner. We ordered a large house salad with extra salad dressing on the side and a large pizza for pick up. We placed the order at 5pm on Sunday and were told that it would be ready at 5:40pm. The people are very friendly. They marked on the outside of the salad box that there needed to be extra dressing on the side - they have the best dressing. We did put the pizza in the oven to keep it hot while we ate our salads. it's just iceberg lettuce and diced tomatoes, and it's delicious. I read over the Door Dash and Google reviews and figured this place would be stellar (the reviews on both are almost 5 stars)! Oh how I wish that I had come to Yelp before placing an order. That small step would have prevented a lot of disappointment and wasted money. I ordered a large pizza with sausage and regular cheese. First Issue: Regular cheese includes a thin layer of cheese with the sauce on top (not what you might expect). If you are looking for a more traditional pizza, this is not it. As some reviewers before me have mentioned, you might want to increase your cheese. Second Issue: From the sauce to the dough, everything was under-seasoned, making for several layers of blandness. This was literally the first pizza that I've ordered that I added salt to. Third issue: the texture of the dough was more like the center of a traditional slice of bread vs. a buttery, crunchy pizza crust. A lot of people order extra cheese, which is probably a good idea for a newcomer there. Extra cheese at Marrone's is still probably less cheese than you're used to. It has a different taste from most pizza, but it's very good. Service is usually good. Sometimes it's a little slow, but always friendly. The restaurant has a homey vibe. I have been going to Marrone's for almost 50 years. It remains a wonderful neighborhood gem. Marrone's continues to be a true original Making pizza that is distinct and different from other pizza places. The crust is sweeter and crunchier than others, the sauce is pretty basic and phenomenal, and the cheese is not your typical pizza topping. The first layer is under the sauce and they do use less than others. We like the triple cheese. They use small and very sharp pepperonis which are amazing. We make the pilgrimage 3-4/yr and have never been disappointed. Since it varies from the traditional pies you'll find almost anywhere, I get why the reviews are mixed. I know a handful of people who just don't like it, but I know dozens who believe it's the absolute best. Beyond the pizza, the staff is amazing. Their tag line on the sign outside is "Just a Little Different" and its true. No other establishment in the entire world could suck this bad and still be open. It's obvious that this place makes their money on the bar, and serving poor seniors $11.75 utterly flavorless, truly worst in class, borderline disgusting plates of pizza. What's wrong here? Everything. Decor is from the 1970s, your classic wood paneled walls, smoke infused carpets, and a few bowls on the wall. Specials likely never change and are written on ripped pieces of yester-years mail and sloppily tacked to a bulletin board. Service is uninspired. But really its the food. Holy hotdogs I am blown away! Being a pizzeria, my family ordered two large pies regular (not extra cheese) which means when they come out after 30 minutes (the waitress says all pizzas take at least 25 minutes) you will be greeted by a plate of steaming "sauce" ie canned crushed tomato without a hint of added seasoning. It's very close to a tomato paste. What a stupid gimmick to put the cheese under the sauce, but they do it to hide the almost undetectable layer of some kind of cheese (undetectable as well) Anyhow, if there was a recipe for this pizza it would be this: 1. take completely unseasoned dough (matzoh has more flavor) and place in a 1" pan. 2. lightly sprinkle on "mystery cheese" 3. open can of sauce. Slop on. 4. place in fifty year old oven at 350 degrees (no chance they use pizza ovens) 5. relax while pizza turns to cardboard. 6. attempt to trade for customer cash. Anyone who thinks this pizza is good is out of their minds. As a matter of fact, it is the worst pizza i have ever eaten bar none. I will never be back. My friend thinks they must drug their food to get return customers "addicted" to it b/c no one would ever come again. I felt so bad for the table behind me who ordered the same thing as we were finishing up. It was obviously it was their first time and definitely will be their last unless they are as out of their minds as anyone giving this place a good review. It's impossible to think any sane person would return for this army food. Seriously, this place is a total joke, except it's not funny, and no one's laughing. You really like it or you really don't, not much in between. Yes, the crust is dry and the cheese hides under the sauce. parking is pretty horrible. Wood paneling and decor right out of 1975. That is what makes it Marrones. Not too many decisions to make. No floppy crust and toppings sliding off onto your plate. Try a large regular pepp and sausage - delish. No need to change out of your sweats and t-shirt. That is what makes it Marrones. Come as you are, eat some pizza, relax, go home when you are ready. I've been in with parties of 10+ twice this month, and barely spent $150 each visit, including gratuity. Very, very kid friendly and family oriented. Great value. Super nice neighborhood feel where people remember you and make a fuss when you walk in. You can call for a table and pre-order your pie - really great when you have kids in your group! They say you either love or hate Marrone's pizza, but i'm honestly in the middle. The pizza has a very distinct taste and is definitely more of an acquired taste. People who grew up eating it, like my dad, love it. I personally have to be in the mood for that pizza, but I do like it. If you get it with double cheese it tastes more like regular pizza. Marrones has been around forever. They have a full menu of things you could get at an Italian restaurant, but I normally just stick with the pizza. I live in Havertown and have been going to Marrone's for about 5 years give or take. My one son loved their pizza so much that we at one point were going a few times a month. This past Halloween we ordered trays of food from Marrones and even gave the owner a $20 tip to help bring the food to the car. I could go on - but you get the point. On November 22nd we went to Marrones with 4 adults and 5 children. We ate the normal Marrones cuisine, pizza, salad, etc. We had a few adult beverages along with the meal. At the conclusion of the dinner - the owner, Kathy proceeds to tell us that the two water bottles that we had been using were in violation of their policy of no outside food or beverage allowed. Now mind you, with tip our bill came to $180.00. As she walked away, after curtly telling us that this will not be allowed in the future, I was stunned, and after waiting a minute to discuss w my wife our response to this - we asked to speak to Kathy - and not to ask for anything but a clarification of her comment - she proceeds w an attitude to tell us that is an insurance thing and that this could lead to people bringing in all sorts of outside food and beverage among other pathetic reasons. If I was a first time customer - maybe - maybe - I could understand her stance. However, to be treated like that by an owner of an establishment that we have been going to with our family for years and have been more than generous in our gratuity to her employees. To me is appalling. We asked for nothing from her other than the respect I felt - I know - we earned. Having worked in the industry for years, I still wonder what her goal was that night? To lose good customers? All over a water bottle that they didn't even offer as a drink option on their menu. We were also treated sarcastically and rudely by a cook who wanted to put her two cents in as we were leaving. NEIGHBORHOOD ESTABLISHMENT? Not Marrones! I remember that my neighbors used to order the pizza from Marrone's when was just a wee lass. I never really enjoyed the pizza back then and the times sure haven't changed. Marrone's offers a very limited menu with pizza being their biggest seller (but I am not sure why). The pasta dishes are not too bad but I have had better at other Italian restaurants. I find the gravy/sauce to be very bland. The service is okay but I always feel rushed when I go there and the waitresses are not the friendliest. Marrone's used to only accept cash as payment. I am not sure if that has changed but I sure hope so. It looks like this place has a very loyal following so that is what probably keeps them in business.
