I wasn't calling her a stripper, only saying that giving money to belly dancers should be done in a more traditional way IE throwing money at her feet or on a carpet to the side and not putting it in her crotch. Last night was my first time here and I absolutely LOVED it!! Came w a large group of friends for a birthday and the atmosphere and music was great! The belly dance came on around 10 definitely adds to the already awesome vibe flowing through this place .. Food & service was on point they were very attentive everything came out pretty quickly ! They had a dj .. "Dj Oscar" I was definitely diggen the mix of music it was perfect they had something for everyone to dance to! We also had a few hookahs that was fun ! Decided to check out somewhere fun and different with some friends for a weeknight dinner. We were pleasantly surprised. You can almost miss the front entry on O'Farrell if you aren't paying attention. The doors are very nondescript, but there is a sign somewhere. The place itself is definitely showing a bit of age, but the seating is lounge and comfortable. Like many restaurants, they are still dealing with staffing shortages, and our server was playing bartender, waiter and show coordinator. So patience is needed for your drinks, but the staff is attentive and will get you what you need. The show is entertaining and the dancers whirl around the room with electric smiles. And then there is the food! This was the biggest expectation smashing in a while. We thought that the food might match the interior (a little dated), but were so pleasantly surprised by the quality of all the dishes! Everything was cooked to perfection, with great flavors. Apparently this was the first Moroccan restaurant in the USA, opening back in the early 70's! Definitely worth a visit for the show and food. Don't let the decor get you down. read more

This review is based on hookah only. Worst hookah ever. They have only basic fruit flavors. Customer service was bad. Had to wait for so long to get new coals. The hookah pipe sucks. The place is good. The food is great and very authentic for sure. Everything is served in a huge plate/tray and you share it with everyone on your table. You don't eat on your own plate but I am sure you can get a small plate of you are not used to that free for all type of eating. I have nothing bad to say in terms of food, flavor and service but... yes there is a big but here - this place can definitely use some cleaning. The wall is so sticky so be careful just leaning on the walls because they are nasty. The sitting situation kind of smell, it's like they haven't been washed, cleaned or vacuumed of however what you can clean those chairs. Given that people also smokes vape inside so you can just imagine all the vapor, smell and condensation that happens inside this place. I am sure it is challenging to keep it clean without proper ventilation. The food is great, flavors are well done but it's really more for the experience over a. The sitting situation isn't as relaxed as you want may want it to be if you are trying to enjoy your food. It almost feel like you have to be cautious sitting making sure you don't lean on some sticky gooey stuff that's been stuck in this place for years. Def need some general cleaning. Food, drinks, hookah, and belly dancing... where else would you go for a full night of entertainment? I love the atmosphere of this place. The decorate it in Moroccan theme with the giant tables that look like plates (I don't know how else to describe it), cushy couches, throw pillow everywhere and dim lighting. My group shared the family meal which came with an appetizer of bread and hummus, and a cinnamon and chicken pastry type thing, and then the non-vegetarian platter came with shrimp, beef, and lamb platter. To be honest, the food was just mediocre. For a culture that typically has a lot of spice, this place was definitely lacking in it. The entertainment was good. A belly dancer came around and danced for us and even invited us on the dance floor the join us. It's kind of weird when you're a girl sitting on the side of the table where's the half naked girl is dancing and you're friends are pressuring you to put a dollar in her half-skirt like thing -_- Overall, it was a good time. Bill was pricey though! Service was spotty. They didn't understand what we were asking for most of the time. We had to keep repeating ourselves. We had a perfectly wonderful meal at Marrakech last evening. First, its not fast food so if you see people complaining about that, they did not understand the leisurely pace of a moroccan 5-course dinner. Ignore those reviews. Okay, again I am biased here for obvious reasons. I used to perform here every week and I've known the owners for years. I adore them. Nice people, hard workers and great musicians. That being said, it's a really fun place and they have worked very hard to continually update and improve things. Don't go expecting to eat fast and get out.. that's not how it's done. The intention is to dine at a leisurely pace and enjoy. Make an evening of it. Eat a little, dance a little.. and so on. :) The bastilla has always been a favorite of mine, as are the moroccan salads...for entrees I like the kabobs, the chicken and couscous. I'm Moroccan myself and it takes a lot for me to be impressed in competition to mom's food. ;) It was quite empty though and we had been looking forward to some bellydancing actually. The food also got mixed up, we had ordered chicken tagine with almonds and got lamb instead, also lamb tagine and got chicken tagine instead but it was good anyway. Amazing experience! You have to come here for the whole experience. I celebrated a special event here with a few of my friends and I can't say enough great things. We were given our own private area and their service was the best I've seen. They made sure I had everything I needed and continuously kept checking in and replacing water and other things without even asking. Loved their hummus and their baklava was delicious! It was also really fun to see the belly dancer perform; amazingly talented. They also have a DJ and people will dance all night. I wish I could give 3.5 stars because 4 feels a little generous. I don't have any particular complaints but I feel like the staff could have been a little more personable. Other than that, it was a very cool experience. The was a belly dancer and she was really good but I guess you are expected to tip her by putting money in her pants and that was a little awkward. My kids were wondering if she's like a stripper. But it wasn't racy or inappropriate or anything. The food was excellent but the hummus tasted like it had peanut butter in it and I wasn't digging on that. I think I was the only one bothered by it. The tea (especially the presentation) was AWESOME! The food portions were very generous. We only needed about 60% of what we were given and we were beyond stuffed. Again, the food was excellent.... But it's really expensive so don't go with a big group if you are picking up the tab. Our bill was well in excess of $500 and only 3 people had 1 or 2 beers. read more

From the rose water pre and post wash to the tea service and the amazing food and attentive service, these guys know exactly what they're doing. Clearly, they've been doing it for 40-years. This restaurant took over 2.5 hours to serve our food. That is not an exaggeration - I don't understand how this place is still in business. It feels more like a random group of people trying to run a restaurant than professionals with serving and cooking experience. The server seemed annoyed any time we tried to order drinks or ask when the food was coming (we waited an hour before even asking where the food was). Once the food finally came out, it wasn't bad, it was actually quite good but it didn't nearly make up for a 2.5 hour wait and poor service. FOR DECADES, Marrakech was my go-to when taking friends to SF. In the past, but no more, the service and food were excellent, and the entertainment made the night. However, it appears to be under new ownership. The place is filthy - did I say disgusting? - and rundown. The beautiful tile work on the walls is broken and in some cases taped back up. The bathroom is disgusting. Further, it is in the basement and the elevator is broken, meaning no ADA access. The urinal is out of order. There were toilet paper and towels everywhere on the floor. The service was, well, not there. We waited for our menus and then waited for our order and then waited for the food. Meanwhile, our ears bled from the high volume of the electronic keyboard playing music. The entire place felt like an establishment being squeezed for its last dollars before being put down. Surprisingly, despite the filthy floors and walls, and worn fabrics there were bright new pillows, which seemed to fulfill the role of diverting observation from the filthiness. Finally, we asked that our food be "to go". The food was not as tasty as in the past, and the amount was far less. Recent reviews that are "glowing" are clearly by friends and employees. It was a horrific experience. I will never go back to the Marrakech... my old but no more favorite. read more

I went there with a friend yesterday, I ordered chicken tagine and my friend ordered mixed grill. The food has nothing to do with Moroccan cuisine, I know because I am born and raised in Morocco. That's not all, what really pushed me to write this review is the service. It was horrible, my friend ordered a Sprite when he finished his drink, the server brought him another Sprite which he didn't drink. When I got the bill they charged us $4 for the refill. All my life eating out and I do that a lot I have never had to pay for refill of soda especially if I didn't ask for it to begin with. When I told the server about it, she just ignored my complaint and went ahead and charged us for that refill. So when "the show" began we would not even be about to see the middle aged women wiggle their tired selves to awful music and passing it off as belly dancing. The food was awful. I think the best part was the baklava which I think is store bought and cut into such teeny tiny prices its as if we didn't even have any. A great Moroccan restaurant in the Tenderloin of San Francisco. I've passed by this place many times and I finally tried it out. Wow! What a stark difference the interior is to the third-world sites outside! This place is beautiful inside, very fancy Moroccan atmosphere and pretty big too. Argiles & Shisha: Marrakech provided a limited selection of cheap tobacco. This is not a hookah destination. There seemed to be limited areas where we could smoke -- i believe this to be a California problem in general. But the combination of wine plus hookahs of any kind is not unwelcome. Belly dancing: a mediocre plus -- one dancer lackluster dancer for the entire night? Sharon (from Aslam's Rasoi) and the dancers I've seen at Kan-Zaman shamed Marrakech's dance talent the night I was here. Voting this as a noble effort but an overall failure. read more

I felt a little awkward sticking dollar bills into my mother's belly dance teacher's skirt, but it was all in good fun. Food was good. The lamb w/ honey & almonds is a really good choice for entree. You can either order al a carte ($25) or the full dinner ($35). Just pay the extra 10 so you can get the lentil soup, salad, the excellent Bastilla (sp?) which is this pastry filled w/ chicken and cinnamon, and the bacclava which is really good. So sad to say that I was disappointed by my time there. One of our dishes was over cooked and hard to eat. The Moroccan chicken however was delicious. So I would recommend that. Their drinks were good. But I was most disappointed by the entertainment. It was a Saturday night, so I guess I expected the best. Both my date and I found the entertainment was more like someone who walked into a belly dancing class one time then decided to do it on the side for extra cash.. Eating here was a big disappointment. We had a reservation for Christmas dinner. When they seated us they handed us a printed sheet of 5 or 6 entrees that we could order. We couldn't order anything a la carte because "it was Christmas." When I had checked the website earlier in the day, there was no mention of a limited menu or anything different for the holiday. Service was very slow and the food was mediocre. Our bill for 3 people with no drinks was $240. Without telling us, they had added on an 18% tip, which in my experience was not right, given that we were a party of only 3. Definitely overpriced for the quality of food. Never had humus served before without pita bread but some other type of bread. The meat of the kebab was undercooked and chewy. The server completely forgot out request for pita bread. They give you the hookah with too much charcoal and it overburns to a point where it is uncomfortable to enjoy it. You will spend your entire night here - even if you don't want to. My friend and I arrived at 8:45 for a chill night with good hookah and a new experience. We were told the hookah wouldn't start until 10 PM - which was fine by us, we wanted to eat a proper dinner and then hang out for a while but still have a relatively early night. We ordered Chicken Tagine dinner and hummus to split for the two of us. The soup came right away with some bread and I thought maybe these mixed reviews were just bad nights. However, by 10:30 we had asked about our proper dinner and hummus at least 3 times - which isn't easy because the servers will not make eye contact with you or check in on you whatsoever. The service was especially irksome because the tables around us, both able to speak Arabic, were served promptly. Whereas the patrons of Asian, Caucasian and Latin descent, around us were having to flag the servers down and were lucky to get what they asked for. We are all there to celebrate the Morrocan food and culture, if the service is bad - I would think it would be bad for everyone. My recommendation for great hookah would be Laguna Cafe. read more

This place is amazing, we had 3 Birthday Parties here. I give for their service and food 5 stars!!! First of all food is amazing and quality of service for five stars. Second of all tables are great, because we planed party for 20 people and 30 people showed up, and owner, waitresses gave big spot for our guests , and everyone loved. They bring teas continuously, water and salad foods, you don't have to mention to them they are great at that. Belly dancing fills your party or you evening with joy. I have to say the food was great! the lamb OMG!! falls off the bone... the bread! I want a dozen to take home honestly. However the service was a bit slow and not attentive at all... To have to wait for 30-45 minutes for water is not acceptable especailly with a party of 9 and being the only ones in the restaurant on a Wednesday night. I hate to leave negative reviews. I feel so strongly that these guys need to be shut down. We had a reservation at 6:45 on OpenTable. The service was non existent. When the coked out busboy finally came, we ordered a bottle of Chardonnay. It was terrible. I said nothing. After ordering after the food came the guy comes to wash our hands. After! The food was undercooked I asked for the check before we were finished just to get the hell out. The coked out later added 20% to the check (we were just two people) without telling me. My girlfriend got sick the next day. I would never go back it smelled so bad the food is terrible the service is worse they should be shut down. Go to McDonald's instead. read more

The Couscous Royal was supposed to be a combination of lamb, chicken & vegetables but only came with 1 small dry piece of lamb and the chicken tasted like it sat under a heating lamp for hours.
