Walked by this place from Domino Park headed to the Marcy Ave train station and it popped up on us. It's small, unassuming and there were no lines. The focaccia is so good soft crunchy and perfectly salty. The romesco and mayo paired perfectly with the deli slices and arugula. Oh and a crunchy pistachio here and there... What is up with meatballs and meat sandwiches sitting out all day with out heat or refrigeration and then being hovered by flys all day, never covered.... Amazing place. I don't eat that much meat but this is where I get my chickens. They're the best I've found and actually more reasonably priced than at the supermarket (for organic free range). I've gotten some wildly good artisanal veggies too. Highlights being blue potatoes, little organic carrots, garlic, and onions. It's also a nice place to go if you like beanies. I converted my vegetarian fiance to the indulgent, meat loving side with the help of Marlow & Daughters. Now send me a gay man! Oh I'm kidding about that last part. So...the conversion has taken place and M&D's local farm raised and grazed meat softened the blow for my meat-abstainer aka fiance and the shop gives me cooking tips. Each butcher and clerk is a total foodie! Now, I do amazing things with tofu, but I don't know how to cook meat. I've never been interested in touching it and well...I could never afford it. Then, I started dating a vegetarian. Shopping for, handling, and cooking meat is very new to me and the customer service couldn't be better. I enter the store determined to plunk down four dollar on a quarter loaf of bread (bread ingredients: water, flour, salt - but unfortunately they have the only edible sourdough bread in the neighborhood). The little store exudes the flair of a mom and pop store in Vermont. Except the prices are more Upper West Side than Vermont. I am reminded that I am actually on the South Side of Williamsburg, Brooklyn when a Hipster chick with a nose ring steps into my way. "Sorry we are not open" I look around. Produce outside. Door open. Sure looks open to me. "So when do you open' ? Hipster chick who is visibly annoyed that I am messing with the rules. "At eleven. Why don't you go to Marlow and Sons (their parent company), have a coffee and come back ?" I say a polite "thank you" and go my way. I think I am going to have some salad for lunch instead. I really hope the owner of Marlow reads this. I would think it very important to a hardworking business owner to know that all the things being done right, and with care, are all for nothing if your staff are rude people. (It appears as though I am certainly not the only one who feels this way) . The products are for the most part pretty nice. The meat is top notch. The selected cheeses are excellent. They have some nice produce most of the time. They don't carry a good ice cream which is strange. Most of the condiments are very good and their pastas are good too. What sucks, is that the staff are SO CONSISTENTLY RUDE, that I won't go there anymore. I am a customer lost. Simply can't take the attitude. And I've tried. Of course it would be great to support a business that buys food that is produced and raised with integrity and quality. Instead the attitude of the employees there, is so over the top bad, that I won't support them any longer. There are 2 women that are just awful, ALL the time. A couple of the guys butchering one day were being so snide and arrogant and uppity in their conversation, I couldn't believe they were being serious...and they were. Sorry Marlow & Daughters. When we are in the South Burg we love to come here. Marlow & Daughters is probably the closest thing you'll get to an old-school market where specific people do specific tasks and they will recognize you if you pop by enough. Sometimes you wanna shop where everybody knows your name (I hope you sang that part to the Cheers theme). As for the products themselves their produce and animal products are stellar. A lot of shops nearby sell similar/the same pastas, canned goods, and candy so I don't spend the top dollar on those when I'm there. The eggs, cheeses, and meats are picturesque- I imagine if we did a cooking segment in the 'hood I'd come here for ingredients. I'm going to keep shopping here until I'm given a reason to be frugal. read more

$2.50 for a clove of garlic??!! Boyfriend lives 1/2 a block away so it was only a matter of time before we ended up in there to pick up dinner necessities rather than talking the longer walk to the grocery store. You can't complain about the thought and care that goes into the produce and meats in the place. The butchers are staff are all knowledgeable, helpful and really thoughtful. Our chicken sausage was delightful and the yellow chard and garlic we purchased was fresh and tasty. My only suggestion is to only come here when you have cash to blow. This place is NOT cheap. We hastily bought tomato sauce here at $7.99 for an 8 oz jar (for comparison you can buy a 24 oz jar of Rao's for $8.99). Our small clove of garlic cost $2.50! What a disappointment. When in to get some meat got a special dinner I wanted to make. A very nice lady behind the counter offered me a cut I had never heard of (mistake number one) and told me how to make it. Marinate for one hour (mistake number 2) in oil, salt and garlic, then cook in a pan for 7 minutes on each side. The meat had no taste, it was tough, and just not good. I swung into this quaint butcher shop last Saturday because I was inspired by an online article littered with beautiful step-by-step images on making a gumbo. Long story short, the gumbo I made turned out horribly. I was on my 3rd attempt at a dark brown roux, and I didn't realize I needed to stir the pot consistently so I burned the bottom of my stew and I sort of realize I actually dislike the consistency of gumbo so I ended up ordering pizza for my guests. That all aside, as I walked into this shop in South Williamsburg I was greeted by two friendly employees (and a skinless sheep's head behind the glass display) who walked me through spending $39 on quality ingredients. I was looking for smoked pork jowls which they didn't have and suggested I try replacing it with smoked ham hocks. One gentleman even took me into the meat rack/fridge/metal contraption to see if I wanted the unsmoked hocks. They didn't have andouille, so I picked up their summer sausage, about a pound of it (of which, maybe only 3/4ths actually made it into my stew because it was so good I just kept eating it from the cutting board). I also picked up a few chicken legs, of which they went ahead and separated them from the drums from the thighs for me. Maybe in the future I'll try to actually debone a chicken a la Jacques Pépin on my own, but for now I'll have someone else take care of most of the work for me. Having just come back from spending time with my mother back in Portland who cooked me a bevy of heritage dishes from Vietnam, I was also on the search for a place where I could pick up beef knuckles, beef bones, and oxtail to make some broth. They didn't have any that day, but I learned I could call in and order them so when they arrived they would be held for me. I learned this place is tasked foremost with providing meat to it's sisters restaurants, and so they have dibs on cuts of meat unless customers request specific things first, and that they try to practice more sustainable methods which is why all parts of the animals are used, and they won't always have everything fully stocked--dependent on what they get in. TL;DR: Gumbo is too difficult of a dish. Roux is a pain. Summer sausage is great. Texan butcher who showed me his ham hocks is cute. read more

The prices here really only make sense if you care about where your meat comes from and how it was raised. I am fairly sure that they reflect the price of raising meat in this way, and not just mark-up by the folks at Marlow. The way I rationalize it is just to go into it with the understand that this is the TRUE cost of raising meat and that supermarket meat prices are distorted by the awful methods they use to raise the animals. Just like with sweatshop clothing, the story of how supermarket meat is so cheap is one they'd prefer if most people didn't know. The solution is to eat meat less, but when you do, support the meat that is ethically raised. read more

I L O V E red meat. I love it raw, I love it rare, as paté or sausage and when I get it from Marlow's I feel like I'm back in backwater on the hill - that's how good it is! It can have a little "low tide" effect on your wallet, but do you really need to eat meat every day or are you a quality worshipper? They have a nice little cheese selection - try the La Tur, it's to die for - and of course very god bread as well. I never got anything else there as I don't see the purpose in paying double the price for a pot of Nutella - but then again, that's not why you go to Marlow and Daughters. In their defense: of course they are more expensive than Food Town or my beloved glamorous C-Town! What do you expect from mass produce vs local hero tomato? As for the staff, they are very knowledgeable, listen to what you want, are helpful and just really nice and interesting people, so nice that I'm actually looking forward to my next shopping there. read more

You can go in here and ask for 0.65lbs of flank steak. The butcher will then grab the slab of flank, hover his knife over it for a second, and then cut a piece that is almost exactly 0.65lbs! Magic! I love coming here. I'm definitely a food geek, and this place feels like it was designed for people like me. Are the goods a bit overpriced? Probably a little, yes, (especially the cuts that are traditionally the cheapest, such as offal) but the staff has always been very helpful and they have what I need. The meats are locally sourced and sustainable (more important to some than others), and they can work with the customer for special requests since they do much of the butchery to order. I needed 15 pounds of pork belly for a dinner party, uncut slab was more difficult to find than I expected. They had multiple whole bellies, and cut what I needed when I got there. Cheaper than the green market, more expensive than whole foods. Worth it? I think so. read more

Similar to Marlowe and Sons' let's-get-down-to-brass-tacks simplicity, M&D focuses on cheese and meats and only the essential condiments and accoutraments necessary to make your charcuterie plate perfect... Fresh, quality, local ingredients are expensive. It sucks, but it's the truth. That's all they have here. Meat, bread, cheese, produce and sundries. All exceptional in quality, all relatively expensive. Get over it or go get some crappy food somewhere else. Get a steak, get a pork chop, get a sausage handmade by a pretty girl covered in blood. Get some beer mustard or farm fresh greens to go with your meat. Go home and drool on yourself while you cook it (by the way if you botch the cooking you WILL hate yourself for the next day or so). I'm what you may call a "foodie" or a "hipster". I am neither. I grew up going to butchers in NYC with my family (yes, i'm from here) and I longed for an old-school butcher shop nearby, with people that knew what they were doing. Marlow & Daughters is just that place. Everything i've gotten there, from sausages to pate, to steaks and pork shoulders have been exceptional. The butchers are adorable and helpful - even taking me back to see the walk-in! I've gone in here several times, with no idea what I wanted, and the guys there gave me a great idea, and sent me on my way. The quality of the meat is excellent, and they always are happy to tell you where the meat came from. No other butcher shop in NYC offers the selection, quality and knowledge that Marlow does. Amazing! I've lived in San Francisco since 2002, but my heart belongs to Brooklyn and my home state of NY. When I am in NY, however, I miss the freshness of the meat and produce that you can buy with relative ease in SF. Of course, since I left NY a couple Whole Foods have opened but there is nothing like the feel of a local, family owned business. When I was in NYC visiting in September my friend who lives in Williamsburg offered to throw a BBQ party on the roof of her beautiful building that overlooks the river. I was ecstatic because 1. I LOVE TO BBQ and 2. That would make it so much easier for me to see as many of my wonderful NY friends as possible in a short period of time. One problem, if I was going to BBQ I was not going to buy crap meat from some crap market. We ended up getting a couple things here and couple things at another nearby market. The sausages I got at Marlow & Daughters were savory goodness. And I loved the selection of meats. They also carry pickles that were pickled in whiskey barrels. Yummy cheeses. Some local and organic produce. And the folks working there were all eager to help and answer any questions. It is small, but that adds to the family owned, old school charm of the place. read more

Lucky for me, this is the closest market to my house. Not only do they have amazing meats but everything else that they sell is very high quality, too. I'm talking peanut butter, fresh fruits, greens, salads, smoked tofu. I've always been able to walk in there and make an amazing meal with whatever is in season that particular day. Today, they happened to butcher a really nice piece of beef just for me and my dinner party tonight. It's going to rule. Just sayin. read more

Staff is awesome, very friendly and helpful and they sure do know their product... Got 2 amazing steaks here, best $24 I spent all day! (they weighed about 1.5lbs total) so not a bad price for an amazing cut of fresh beef.... when you want to get your carnivore on, I suggest you come here to buy your meat... I will definitely be back :) **UPDATE** Bc they age everything there... I would suggest calling before making a trip to make sure they have what you need... Went to Marlow & Daughters for the first time last weekend and it was terrific. What a great little butcher and import/local goods store. The butcher I met there was super friends and knowledgable and was talking me up about a german inspired cheese stuffed sausage he was going to be making in the next few weeks and it sounded so good I talked with him about shipping me some (I live in DC) when he ends up making it! I met a woman who was more on the cheese side of things and she was super knowledgable and very very friendly. Sometimes I feel when I'm in NYC or Brooklyn that I'm being judged, like am I cool or in-the-know enough to be there, there was none of that here, just friendly staff and great product. There are also some beautiful looking fresh breads, both local dairy products and vegetables as well as classic imports from Italy (pastas, sauces, etc.) and the like. I bought a pickled egg, an amazing fennel pollen heavy salami, duck rilette & some amazing fresh red shallots. A little pricey but worth the price so I'd happily pay it. i go every weekend and get all of my meat for the week. I eat meat three meals a day, and when its all said and done i spend about 110 dollars and MaD which i find to be pretty reasonable (considering its all my meat for the week and i could easily spend that on dinner for me and my gf in a night or two of eating out). If i buy some other add ons besides the meat my bill usually lifts to an oddly higher level...meaning I find good value in my meat per dollar ratio but am always a little disappointed in how much it costs to walk away with a little produce or yogurt or honey on top. Anyways, i really shouldn't even include this in the review as it is my own fault with these big eyes/stomach. I just visited yesterday and it made my day. The awesome staff gave me a quick tour of their site. I got to see a whole pig cut in half! It was amazing! They are truly committed to sourcing from farms that humanely raise their stock and butchering in way that offers extremely fresh cuts and using all the parts of the animal! I feel lucky that this little market is around the corner from me. There isn't a huge range of products, but the selection therein is fantastic. The meat is outstanding, they always great bread (cranberry walnut!) and an interesting assortment of cheese. They also have a really nice section of dried goods, like pastas and beans. The produce is amazing, though on the expensive side. The pickles are bangin'. The best thing about going to Marlow & Daughters is knowing that the food I'm buying was made or prepared exceptionally well by people who care about what they do. You won't find bad food here. They support local companies like Mast Bros., Liddabit, and North Fork chips, and source their meat and produce from local and regional farms with good values. The hide of the beef or pork you're eating is used to make bags sold at Marlow & Sons. Food shopping should have that kind of transparency. read more
