Underachieving! Heard good things about Mark's but they failed to deliver on our first visit. Came to Appleton for a performance at the PAC on a Friday night so my wife and I thought we would have some German food first. After an hour wait for a table, we got there at 4:45pm, we were seated (by the doorway) and given menus. Not seeing any German entrees, which I had researched on their website, I asked the waitress and was told that they were not available on Fridays. Sure wish that would have been stated on their website since their claim to fame is their German food. I settled for their perch dinner and was disappointed to see it was the run of the mill bar fish from a wholesaler. The German potato salad was good as a side, but it makes me wonder what I missed in their entrée. Parking was an issue and if you don't like being cramped in and constant traffic past your table, you may want to come on an "off" night or try somewhere else. read more

overall experience was truly terrible. There were a million things to choose from, and nothing that sounded the least bit appetizing. I dont know how long this restaurant has been in business, but it appears that the menu hasnt changed since the seventies. Outdated and disgusting recipes littered the menu. The decor was Irish but for some reason there was German food? My sister had the weiner schnitzel and it was O.K. minus the gallon of gravy covering it. I had the broiled haddock and it appeared to be cooked in either an entire stick of butter or some nasty margarine. Truly repulsive. You could not taste the fish at all through the butter and their thick mayonnaise-y tartar sauce hardly helped it at all. I chose the rice as a side and THAT was a mistake--it was over-cooked and tasted slightly earthy-as if it had been days old or possibly even moldy. i could not make out what they tried to season it with. the only good part about the meal was the whole grain bread served with dinner and the partly-edible iceberg (trash) lettuce salad. i would never ever ever go to this disgusting trash heap ever again. i would have returned my food and not eaten if i hadnt been with someone who had invited me ( i didnt want to offend their taste in restaurant choices which is usually pretty good). Truly terrible. there were so many moments where i wanted to get up and leave. I truly do not believe that anybody working at that restaurant has tasted that food since it is so embarassingly awful. the only way i can fathom that there are so many good reviews is that the people making them were drunk off their a$$ while eating. i wish i could give it zero stars but yelp makes you give at least 1 read more

I cant believe Mark's only has 7 reviews! Great food, great drinks, awesome service! What more can I say? You cant go wrong here. My girlfriend had never had (or heard of) an old fashioned so I decided that best place to experience one would be a quintessential Wisconsin Supper Club. Mark's was perfect! The drinks were spot on and that bartender was friendly. Lyndsey was our waitress and she could not have been more attentive, friendly, and even funny. I could go on and on. Go here! Awesome food, service and atmosphere. I'm not often blown away by restaurants, but you can't go wrong at Mark's. I had the Bavarian Combo Platter and a bowl of French onion soup. Wife and I had early dinner here on Saturday night, good selection of German and American dishes, as well as Seafood selections. Wife had the schnitzel which was fantastic, with fried egg, capers and sauce. I had the Prime Rib which just melted in your mouth. Had house salad with hot bacon mustard dressing, really tasty. This is one of my favorite supper club in town (or Black Otter)The food is great and they know how to make cocktails. It gets real busy during the weekend, and can be a little expensive (especially after sucking down a bunch of drinks while waiting for a table) but that's the norm with Wisconsin supper clubs. read more

We went here because we were gifted gift certificates. I have some of the WORST diet restrictions that make dining out hard. I was very impressed at their gluten free options. I LOVE calamari and decided to give the gluten free calamari a try. HOLY MOLE it was amazing. Some of the best I've had in NE Wisconsin. It was tender and wasn't super chewy. Cooked perfectly and for a gf option it was better than any regular I've had! I got the salmon special that was suppose to be on noodles but they made it special for me so I could have it without gluten and didn't make me feel like a pain for ordering it like that. My husband had (can't remember exactly what it was called) but the sirloin and ginger gravy dish with spatzel. I think when he ordered it, he wasn't expecting to be impressed but was he wrong! the small little taste of gravy I had made me curl my toes it enjoyment. I loved it. Cassandra and her staff and the food are amazing! I can't say enough good things about how amazing the food was. I am gluten free and they have a dedicated fryer and are so knowledgeable about food issues. The gluten free onion rings come in a heaping pile and are more like onion strings but so worth it. And the gluten free perch fish fry is out of this world amazing!!!! It was so light and fluffy and delicious that I double checked to see if it was gluten free and it was! The food and experience was well worth the wait that they had to get a table. They quoted us an hour and it ended up being less than an hour but we had the onion rings and drinks and that passed the time. My husband who is not gluten free tried all my food and said that he would order it next time because it was just that good. The chef and the manager and our waitress all were so friendly and wanted to make sure that we had the best experience possible. We will definitely be going back! Don't pass up the chance to dine at this wonderful place. The warm and inviting atmosphere, outgoing and friendly staff and amazing food makes this place my new favorite! Enjoy! I've been going to Marks for a long time and all I gotta say is that their food has continually gone down hill. You used to get a huge schnitzel serving, now it's tiny. The speatzels were basically nonexistent. The side salad was a total joke, a few leaves of lettuce and garden veggies, barley filled half the small plate. Their "house specialty" Chicken cordon bleu was terrible...just a dry chicken breast covered with lunch meat ham and some cheese. CCB should be a chicken breast pounded flat with a cutlet hammer, then filled with shredded ham and cheese, then wrapped up breaded and baked or deep fried...with cheese sauce over the top. $16 for their lazy presentation is a rip off. The wild rice was dry as dust and everything is smaller portions, but of course higher prices...but isn't that how it is everywhere? No longer outstanding at all. Left hungry and very disappointed. Oh, and why if you have eight people at a table do they give you a basket of bread for five then return to check on you 10 mins later? You can do better Mark. read more

LOVE this place. LOVE Mark Dougherty, the owner, and his staff. Locally owned restaurant, second generation is now operating it, and doing a fantastic job. Friday Fish Fry is a must - fantastic. German menu is excellent as well. Mark cuts his own meats and filets the fresh fish served here. Staff is very, very conscientious. Great atmosphere suitable for business lunches, ladies lunches, families. We have been bringing our daughter to Mark's since she was an infant, more than 17 years ago. Everything on the menu is delicious. Great soup and salad buffet for lunch - the popovers are fantastic - light, fluffy, tasty. We've been coming to Mark's for over 20 years, and will continue to do so for many more years to come. Mark and his family are great supporters of the community, especially youth organizations. A great restaurant with great food, operated by great people. For the reviewers who had bad experiences, I'd encourage them to try Mark's again, and to share your previous experience with Mark - he would want to know, and would do what he can to remedy any problems. read more

Had never been to this place, and only because of reviews on Yelp, we visited Mark's East Side on Feb 3rd, 2018 to celebrate our daughters B-day. So family of 5 (older kids 17 to 27) plus 1... Made a reservation and probably a good idea that we did. We had a great experience. First the service was great. We sat within 5 minutes of arriving (just enough time to get a drink at the bar) and we were greeted quickly by Franny. She was great... Friendly and knew a lot about the menu. Then the food.... Food was great. We had quite a variety of food and everyone was very happy with their choice. Steaks were done well. Salmon was cooked perfectly. The head chef did visit our table to check on our food which was very nice. I believe this place is priced appropriately because of the quality. I am willing to pay more for great food and service. Last but not least, since it was our first time, they gave us a 10% coupon for our next visit. I suspect we will be back there in the near future. read more

Here it go's guys. 5 Stars for Fantastic! I've had this place bookmarked for a couple months now but was waiting till my parents came into town to go give it a try. We were all very pleased! First of its popular so if you don't have a reservation expect a wait. We went on a Thursday around 5:40 and we waited about 30 min for a table. The bar is a beautiful Irish pub style all green and gold. The food was so good. We all shared a couple Scotch eggs that were delicious. Most of us ordered off the "Old World" section in the menu which includes several different types of Schnitzels. I ordered the Schnitzel A la Holstein. It was breaded veal cooked perfectly, topped with hollandaise sauce, fried eggs, and capers! Mouth watering!! To end the night with a bang, the waitress gave us a $10 gift card for our next night there due to it being our first time. Talk about service!! Great food! Great place for family! We ate there on a Tuesday night. Was seated immediately and the service was excellent. Started with the German sausage appetizer with hot mustard, caramelized onions and grilled bread. Delicious. Second course was French onion soup. A bit salty but otherwise good. Main course I had roasted duck and she had the German sampler. HUGE portions, and very good. Not the greatest experience I have ever had a a restaurant. Today was our first time visiting Mark's and we didn't really know their procedure. We walked up to the hostess stand, I gave them our name and party of two and she just handed us a number and went onto the next person in line behind us. Not really knowing what to do with the number, we walked into the bar and ordered a couple of beers. When the beer came, we had to ask the bartender what we were supposed to do with the number and he explained the system to us. The bartender provided good service. We were at the bar for about 8-10 minutes waiting for our table and noticed another party of two who came in after us were given a table before us, which bothered us a little bit. When we got to the table, our server, Jodi, didn't offer us any drinks. She automatically filled our glasses with water and left us to look at the menu. When we were ready to order she took my wife's order and asked if she wanted a salad and what type of potato, but when I ordered, she didn't ask me about either. I would have ordered a salad had it been offered. We also would have ordered an appetizer but that was never offered, and she again failed to offer drinks, so we were stuck with just our water. When the food came out, she set the plates in front of us, then said "wait, looks like they put the wrong ticket up" presumably meaning the cooks in the kitchen and then picked up the food she had set in front of us, took it to the next table over and set it in front of them. Then she realized it WAS our food after all and picked it back up and put it in front of us. Maybe I am just being picky, but I was kinda put off by the fact that my food had been put in front of someone else for them to breathe on and pass on any illnesses they may be dealing with. All in all, the food was only ok, the service was below average, and the atmosphere is dark and dreary. From our experience tonight, not really a place that I would recommend. There were a lot of other people in the place that seemed to be having a good time though, so maybe it was just us or just our server. Take it as you will, I guess. read more
