The original worker I asked for tea suggestions was super helpful, but then in the middle of him helping us (like literally bagging tea for us), the person who looked like the owner told him to go run an errand and then had another person take over abruptly without any verbal recognition of this change. I have been coming to MarketSpice on and off for... I don't know, 20 years? Admittedly, it has been a while since I've stopped in because I work from home these days and this area is just too mobbed to ever just "pop-in" for some tea & spices. But, yesterday was the super bowl so I figured it was a great time to stop in here, D'Laurenti, and a couple of other faves. I was in search of persian limes, which they did not have here anyway. That said, I spent about $50 on various coffee, tea, & spices. I've tried two of the three tea varieties I purchased and one is very weak (suggesting it's old) and the other (Gen Cha Mai) tastes strongly of the mandarin flavoring used in their jasmine mandarin green tea pearls, so I think it was cross contaminated. Prices have also gone up a lot. The teas I selected were about $10/ounce which puts them on par with pricier tea shops (they used to be a more reasonably priced alternative). I do agree with another poster that the shop is feeling like it could use a deep clean these days. Incidentally, World Spice was on my way out and I stopped in to see if they had the persian limes I was searching for. They did, along with a great selection of dried chilis and the same teas for about half the price. All in a clean, bright, spacious interior. I think this is actually the first tea shop I've done a review for. While thinking about what should go into a five star tea shop, it came down to things like having a large selection, being able to sample and being able to make your own special teas. That's basically the definition of marketspice. If you've never tried the name sake tea here, you owe it to yourself to do so. It's a magical blend of some orange, tons of different spices and ultimately a combination of things that plays on your tongue such that it tastes sweet without any actual sugar. They sell both hot and iced versions of it, and it's something that you taste once and you really never stop liking. Samples are available in the back of the store and are lovely! In addition, for those who are unrefined and don't like the tea, They have plenty of other options. When you walk in, you will note that there are tons of jars full of spices lining the walls. I bet there are a couple hundred different options that range from the common, to the rare and eccentric. They sell everything by the ounce, or the pound if you so desire! The folks that were working here we're very helpful, and did an excellent job of helping us navigate the array of tea and spices. It's almost as if they were clerks on an 18th-century ship from the West Indies...Brilliant! MarketSpice is a relatively tiny little shop to the left of Pike Place Fish Market which offers bulk spices, teas and accessories. They seem to carry a nice selection of different spices and teas housed in large glass jars which you can buy by the ounce as well as in prepackaged bags. The one item that I come here for is their house tea. It is a distinct cinnamon and orange spiced black tea. It is surprisingly sweetly flavored and is the one of the best teas that I have tasted. The flavor seems to remain on a second refill of hot water over the leaves. I have not bought any of the spices here, but it looks like a decent place to get spices for cheap. I do say though that I am all about the tea here and I like this place for it. read more

The selection of tea here is enormous and the location is conveniently located in a high foot traffic place like Pike Place Market. Even though the place looks a bit outdated, it does carry a lot of selection and, just like any other spice/tea places, the aroma within the shop is just inviting! What I love about this shop is that they always have some sort of sample tea out there in front of their shop for anyone to try. For a few times now, I got to sample some of their hot teas, but recently (last week), they put out cool cinnamon-ish flavor tea, which was quite refreshing, especially if you have been walking a lot! Too bad, we came to look for kava tea here but they don't carry that tea. Wouldn't mind stopping by again. Not sure what the price range is but given that this place is located in a high traffic location, it may be a bit pricier than other bulk tea places. read more

Tea. Do not pass this spice gem without partaking in their MarketSpice tea. Do you like tea? Do you not like tea? It doesn't matter. Just go in, get a little paper cup of it and dive into heaven. However, if you do like tea, seriously, you are in the right place! Is there a better place in the world for tea? I don't know, maybe, in some market in Marrakesh or some such place, but not anywhere in this hemisphere. Oh, and lest I overlook their other claim to fame, that would be spice I mean after all, it is in the name. If you're a spice freak like I am (I mean a crazy cook that loves spice) you will adore, love and cherish for life, this gold mine of spices from all over the world. Came here to pick up more items for holiday client's gift baskets. Cute shop and have more than just tea and spice. They had apple cider and mulled wine for the holidays. We only had to get about 9 boxes but they were one short of the one we needed so we got a decaf instead. The customer service was great they said if we ever need to a large amount next time to call and let them know the count. Sometimes when we're pulling all the local stuff together for our gift baskets it's easier to see them in person and scope out what else is available. Love this little tea and spice shop. Have gotten their Market Spice tea, but also really love their Chai tea, jasmine green tea, and various spices. Service is friendly and helpful. There are spice jars, tea paraphernalia, and various packaging of teas: whether pre-packaged or nicely packed for you personally. It's a wonderful place in the midst of Pike Place Market, and has been around for a long while. I LOVE THIS PLACE. I can't believe this is the first time I have written a review...I come here now that I live here in Seattle and before I made Seattle home when I used to just come and visit. They hit the 3 things that are so important to me when I go into any establishment. 1. Great Service (These friendly folks know their products!) 2. Good Prices (Fair and reasonable) 3. Great Selection (Fresh, so many options!) I live down the street so I aways go about 1 hour before the entire market is going to close. There are far less people and less tourists. Even on their busy days/season/hours they are still helpful! They have spices, herbs, spice blends and teas! So they have everything your little heart desires! The folks they have working here are here to help you with questions and suggestions!!!! I worked with a lovely person she has red short hair and some facial piercings and I described to her what the end product I was trying to achieve and she was able to recommend something so I did not have to spend a zillion dollars. Also unlike the other place down the street the smallest amount they are able to sell you (in single herbs-I didn't buy any blends) is a 1/2 ounce (which really is really helpful when you only need a pinch of something for a recipe that you may never use ever again). The other spice place I would have spent about 40.00$ here I spend under 3.00$ plus great service!!! This place is not corporate they have been at the market since 1911! They are locally run, they are not constantly worried about their bottom line :) and how much and how quickly they can empty out your pockets. MarketSpice is this cute corner shop located smack dab in the center of Pike Place Market. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the intense aroma that fills your nose with joy - or sneezes, depending on how you are. I absolutely LOVED it! They have spices for foods as well as a whole wall of tea! Since my roommate and I specifically came here to explore their tea options, I'll elaborate on that more. All of their teas are available for you to open and smell at your own pace and at your own liking. The labels are handwritten and sometimes drawn, making each jar very cute and personal. They have an extensive selection of tea to choose from, with the extremely sweet and fruity to the spicy and dark. The customer service here is great! The workers are all very friendly and will answer any questions you have. I found out that most of the teas are there for good and not on rotation, except for a few that come around only for the holidays (which makes sense). Another quality specialty store in which the trip of itself is just as much fun as the acquisition of fine products. I love their Montana Morning tea blend, and their licorice tea--you could literally spend hours here and still not see all the excellent items they sell. I will definitely pay more for quality, being a chef, and hate to skimp when it comes to quality and compromise is sometimes a dirty word. At Market Spice, this is the perfect place to take your out-of-towners to see an historic part of Seattle and unsurpassed visit during summer daylight hours, the memories of which can last a lifetime. I still go here for the tea, though! And the other things, too. My guest from Tennessee was overwhelmed by this place and the Pike Place Market in general. If you abhor standing in the grocery aisle, peering up and down each (supposed) alphabetized jar of 3 of the same brands of spices, herbs, and extracts, then you should really hit up Market Spice. My little pic doesn't do the selection justice, but luckily other Yelpers have captured the shelves of happiness. I really think that those guys in Dune were actually looking for Market Spice. My prior trip, I snagged Garam Masala (yum!) and of course, plenty of saffron and salts. This recent stop, I picked up some Bergamot and lavender extract--to make some tea cookies I've been dying to make. AND I got some pickling spice! I didn't realize it was so inexpensive here, so I had just been making my own mix. Not no mo'. Pumpkin spice is so cheap here, I couldn't say no--another British cookie recipe I found called for something like it, and it works like a charm. Again, I was just mixing my own, but sometimes, I don't feel like being my own kitchen-doctor/apothecary lol Another good find was some ground cardamom (one of my favorite flavors) which is usually found at shops in whole form. I didn't really feel like going in since there seemed to be more employees per customer capita than at any of the Pike Market shops, and I just wanted to browse. Shelves upon shelves of fresh spices for cheap! Why is it that specialty spice shops like this one and the Spice House in Chicago can sell BETTER quality spices CHEAPER than normal grocery stores? I don't get it, but I like it! I skipped the spices and large selection of loose leaf teas since I was traveling, but I did manage to score a few small bottles of Orange, Wild Cherry, Bergamot and Eucalyptus extracts which I used for making soaps! The orange and bergamot paired great with cloves! If I lived in Seattle I would be here all the time. read more

For a lot of people, it seems to come down to a decision between Market and World. There are two big spice retailers in the market, and Market has by far the more prominent location. They have an amazing sweet and spicy tea blend, which they have named for themselves and emblazoned with a photo of the market. They brew it every day and offer free samples all day. It's a rich, delicious, somewhat oily spiced tea that I will never, ever, ever tire of drinking. Rumor has it that the serious culinarian will be better served at World, for price, for selection, and for quality. But I've always been happy enough with the peppers, herbs, and spices I've gotten from Market. And you certainly can't argue with bringing friends in here for a cup of hot tea and a box to take home. I discovered MarketSpice through the Savor Seattle Food Tour. Located near the infamous fish stand in Pike Place Market, this place is a real gem for those looking for affordable spices and teas. You can find a bag of bay leaves for 86 cents and a 4 oz bag of loose leaf tea for roughly $5. Both of these go a long way for me. Aside from the bay leaves, I do love to buy tea here. I recently brought myself lychee rose tea to test out. It smells so delicious but I do like how it's slightly sweet and no sugar needs to be added. Then again, I'm not one to add sugar to my tea most of the time. MarketSpice is also known for their Orange Spice tea, which is tasty too. They have such a large variety of spices as well, which I haven't had to buy yet. When the time comes I'll make the trip here to stock up. read more

Even though I've stopped drinking tea for the most part, I still love trying something new every now and then and sampling old tried and true faves. I usually hate fruity flavored teas and stick to green tea or slight variations, but the orange and cinnamon black tea here is soo good. It's very aromatic, and the flavors come through really well. Usually I feel that flavored teas come out kind of weak and end up tasting like slightly flavored water, but their signature tea is done well and deserves its high rating. This place is actually a spice and tea place. You can buy spices or tea by the pound, and get items related to it. Spice rubs for any type of meat, teas for different tastes. Jars and containers to hold all of that, and endless other things related to them. Mugs, teapots, etc etc. They always have samples of their signature orange and cinnamon tea ready for tasting, or to lure you in and then make you buy lotsa stuff. The people here are knowledgeable about their products. Just ask them if you have any questions or are looking for something specific. Last time I came here I walked off with several types of tea to try. Little bits so I can see if I like or not. It's funny that this shop is in Pike Place Market, tourist mecca. Since they have items that I would like to get daily. Getting spices by the pound is always so handy when you're cooking, and trying out new teas is easy since you can just buy a little and not waste money on buying packs of tea you might not like anyhow. They do package all their teas in handy dandy tourist bundles, nicely boxed with teabags or loose teas in bags. All set up for someone to buy some and take home. Like...me! I absolutely love this shop. It is like a little hidden gem here. Most people are looking at salmon getting tossed up and down but miss seeing this store. It is tucked behind the fish shop. Inside, they have this sample area where they offer you to try their orange and cinnamon tea. It tastes like it was sweetened but in reality, it is the natural spices that gives off the sweet flavor. You can buy an assortment of teas and spices for a pretty reasonable price. This shop is much cheaper than a store like Teavanna (rip off store). You don't have to buy a minimum oz. amount and can buy all kinds of teas like rooibus, strawberry, chai, and etc. I highly recommend that you stop by here and buy our tourist merchandise at this shop. A treasure trove in the Pike Place market! They have a little tea tasting station in the back, which is fabulous on a cold day. When we visited, they had hot apple cider and their signature cinnamon-orange tea available for sampling. Both were delicious, and needless to say, we bought both! As Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in Tombstone says, "I'm your huckleberry." But MarketSpice's Huckleberry tea (a hair pricey at $8.95 for a box of 24 teabags) is not my huckleberry. I bought a box since huckleberry is a uncommon tea option, but now I'm regretting it. The tea is very strong smelling. The ingredients are "Special tea blend, Natural and Artificial Flavors. Contains No Sugar." It's like the perfume counter at Macy's every time I open the cabinet; this tea is extremely pungent. Plus, the taste isn't very-berry like. Plus, I got a haughty vibe from one of the employees. I don't know if it was because it was near closing or what, but she wasn't exactly the warmest person. I did sample MarketSpice's signature cinnamon orange tea few times at various places and really liked it. Should've gotten that instead! read more

Wow! This place is AMAZING. I can't recall a time when I've visited a spice market, so this may be the first time I've actually been to one. Anywho, this place rocks my socks off. It's a quaint, tiny shop filled with all sorts of spices, tea medleys, coffees, and trinkets such as tea-brewing equipment. It's to the left of the meat counter, which is located to the left of the infamous fish market. When you walk in immediately in front of you are shelves of coffees and teas. On the wall at the back of the shop are loose-leaf teas and more coffee. On the left wall of the store are shelves harboring jars of everyday spices, as well as unique ones such as Harissa and green peppercorns (has anyone ever tried green peppercorns???). I like the free samples of brewed tea at the front and right side of the store. Definitely a great find, especially if you're looking for those hard-to-find spices. Love this place! read more

Coffee and tea are fantastic, but don't rely on the Pike location to get what you need. Order online instead. Store is extremely cramped, their credit card machine keeps going down (and I don't dare use an ATM at Pike Place), and as of October 2022, they're one of the last places in Seattle to require you to wear a mask in the store, which is more an irritant than anything else, but they have so many obstacles in place at any moment to discourage you from shopping in-person. It's a poignant example of why retail is dying in favor of online shopping, which is extremely sad for a location like this. read more
