The man behind the counter appeared to be inconvenienced when he actually had to get out of his chair to process my purchase. After putting my change on the counter instead of handing it to me, he never spoke throughout the transaction, nor did he acknowledge that I actually thanked him and went back to his chair. Customer service results in repeat customers, I guess he doesn't understand that or even cares.

She pointed and said he's here in the store and pointed to him "Joe". I walked over and shook hands and aske him how he started the business. What a great story 28 Years ago and now - 6 locations! Joe started by buying a small package store from a friend's family who wanted out of the business. He was a young guy going to college -had a wife and hardly any money to his name and owing a mortgage for his home and working another job and maintaining the small Package Store on Bridge St. in Lowell, Ma. He knew nothing about this business. He made it work and grew the business. Its a great American Dream come true. I have so much respect for people like this. HE WORKED FOR IT AND EARNED IT !! Not riding on the backs of others and surprising he seemed like a pretty unpretentious person. Their Wine prices are incredibly competitive; many Wines are LESS expensive than neighboring NH stores! Being a regular, I felt like I had to say something, not to mention having lived outside the Rhône region in France, where I experienced real Syrahs for several a years. When I told them this was not a debate about the quality of the wine, but rather that it was simply bad, I was told that all of their wines are good because they have other customers that like them. To quote: "All of their wines are on the shelf because someone likes them", therefore no bad wines, just differing palates. How convenient. I wouldn't even think of debating subtleties in N Andover, but when something is so bad that is undrinkable at $80/bottle, only an utter moron would keep quiet. BTW, this experience was all after providing the respect of temperature acclimation and decanting. So long story short, they have decent prices for table wines, but it you are looking for something upscale, don't waste your money. And whatever you do, don't be bamboozled by their pseudo sommeliers.

Do yourself a favor and head to this place for a free wine tasting on Saturdays. Its a step above other Market Baskets, but there are still some service issues. Maybe the one they are reconstructing will solve that, who knows? Certainly overall pricing is better than Shaw's, but I can't deny that its worth shopping the next door Walgreens for HBC sales and stock up when these products are on sale either there or CVS. (I can say the savings per additional hour of effort for me is around $40-$50 an hour, which most of us do not earn post tax at our jobs). These nonfood products do tend to be priced higher here than at Hannaford too. I know someone who is a pricing analyst and Market Basket tends to be ranging 2% to 4% cheaper than Hannaford depending on sales (it used to be more); and almost all of the difference can be accounted in just a few items (Rotisserie chickens, Hoffman Cheese, American Cheese, and a few others). Bakery tends to be lower at Market Basket as compared to Hannaford (I rarely ever buy any bakery items anyway) but you are sacrificing some quality too. If you don't buy these items and a select few others, its worth passing up this store and heading to Hannaford for better service especially during peak hours and better quality (depending on where you are). And I do say that Trader Joe's, Sam's Club, and Costco are still cheaper too, depending on where you go on a daily basis. read more

People come for the low prices, but it's really not that low that you see a distinct difference over other stores. In fact, they are definitely pricier than Aldi, though Market Basket beats them on selection. Shaw's may have higher regular prices than this place but they certainly have better sale prices especially once you factor in a benefit for Mymixx. Walmart is without question priced lower. Though, where MB goes wrong is that their store is consistently dirty and disorganized in many places. Many products are mislabeled all natural, gluten free, and organic when they should not be and vice versa. The service is much more of a miss than a hit as they are consistently understaffed with 4+ carriages frequently waiting at the checkouts with only a few of them being opened. read more
