I love this store it is cheap and good quality! The employees and always nice. And it feels like a safe place and is a nice place.

Pitch black parking lot which is a safety matter. Isles in total disarray. Limited cashiers hence long lines to checkout. Very limited product selection and not all at good prices. I have come in here for the isles that have limited Squishmallows but not to grocery shop. I have looked at the food in the temperature controlled cases but have never been drawn to buy. read more

Aldi is medium size grocery store, Aldi is a German company. Aldi has the lowest possible price product in market especially milk, eggs, candies, juice, vegetables, cheese and others. Don't have big variety of everything but you still can do your shopping here. They import lots of things from Germany( good quality) . They weekly offer on sale / very good deal new things Like: coolers, tents, car wrenches , car battery charger, knife sets , pillows, kids toys, pans and lots of different other things. When I heard Aldi was opening in Salem, I was hoping it would be successful, but curious how people in the area would respond to it. Judging from Sandy D's review, my fears were accurate. After my recent visit, I am glad they are here. This is not a place where you go to find Hood milk and Cheerios. It is a store that carries their own choice of brands which allows them to pass lower prices on to the consumer. That doesn't mean that they are dollar store brand goods, it just means that they are more selective in their suppliers. You may not be able to purchase Jiffy Peanut Butter, but when you go to Market Basket and buy generic, then what is the difference? Also, they keep costs down by charging people a deposit to use a shopping cart. What is the big deal here? More places should do this. Imagine how few carts would be left in the parking lot resting up against your car door? A whole quarter that you get back after shopping?! THE HORROR!!!!! To continue on Sandy D's review...who uses a check these days? I mean I understand since I just retired my bank book, but still. The rest of the world has been using debit cards for years. We need less check writers in this world. Lets slow down the whole line so I can write out and balance my check book in front of the cashier. And the bag comment...another way to keep costs down. And its a little more environmentally sound. I am not a tree hugger, but a reusable bag or 2 is not the end of the world. I hate seeing all the plastic bags scattered around everywhere so I like that you have to bring your own bags. I go here when I really want to save a little money on generic items. My apparent mission to visit every ALDI in New England continued when I stopped into the Salem, NH location. I have to say upfront that it was very busy when I was there and I think that took away from my enjoyment of browsing and really looking for bargains. Same set up as the others ALDI grocery stores. I really like that because it makes it easier to find things. Boy, I feel old saying that- my grandmother always said that about stores! Same good prices. Same cash register set-up where they don't bag and they don't let you use your credit card (cash, debit accepted, and I think checks). The cashiers are always super nice. Aside from being too crowded for my comfort, I didn't feel like this had the same selection as the other ALDI stores that I've visited. They didn't seem to have as many as the healthier options and several places on the shelves looked sold out without having been restocked. It could be because it was on the weekend and it's a high traffic area compared to the other locations that I visited but I came away a little disappointed in the selection. (Luckily I've been to so many others that there was nothing I truly needed!) As with the other locations, if you've never been then you are in for a pleasant treat when you see the prices. For the people who are confused/disgusted/haughty/outraged: Aldi is a Germany-based supermarket with 10,000 stores in 18 countries. They are not "jumping on the eco bandwagon" - paying a refundable deposit for your shopping cart & bringing your own bags and bagging your own groceries is TYPICAL of many European places, especially Germany. These are not "tacky generic dollar store brands" - many to most are brands you're already buying in other markets, they are just packaged under the Aldi name. It is OK to purchase and consume foreign brands! Good grief, to the lady who cautioned against it! There are 750million people living in Europe eating their "foreign brands," and they are fine! & their food is often considered superior to American! WHO IS STILL USING CHECKS?? Get a debit card and join the 20th century! (Yes, we're in the 21st century now.) All the items listed above is to help KEEP COSTS AS LOW AS POSSIBLE! This place is clean, efficient, and cost effective. The people are friendly and helpful. It doesn't have everything you'd expect in a Market Basket, but it has all the basics, and usually at a much lower cost. I like it!!!! I wish they'd build one closer to Nashua. read more

Had to check this place out. Took a walk around, and straight line out! Yuk!!...This place is a menagerie of mongrel brands!!! It reminds me of the Dollar Tree store in Methuen! Never heard of most of the brands in there!... Where does that stuff come from?? No way did I get excited about this store whatsoever. They don't take checks? and they don't take credit cards?... Who goes to the grocery store and doesn't use a check? You have to bring your own bags, and pay a quarter to use a carriage to buy off brand who knows what?? The whole place is strange. Aldi is a European based grocery store. Just because some brands are unknown doesn't mean they are not good. I went in with an open mind and glad I did so. It is inexpensive and good quality. Sometimes buying brand name items doesn't mean it's good quality. All items are generic until brand name companies pay big bucks to slap their name on a product. I save big when I go to Aldi. For some families with financial constraints, this is a better choice so let's not judge. The store is super clean and the associates are friendly and helpful. Aldis is great. You can get things really inexpensive there. Produce is cheap milk, snacks and other essentials. Cheap meat too, though I haven't tried it. You should bring your own bags since its costs extra. They finally accept credit cards now! It's a great place but they don't have enough inventory for a full food shopping. Worst store I've ever been in. Rude cashier's to all the shoppers. Not just me. When my cashier was putting my stuff in my basket,she was literally throwing my things in there. I had to ask her to stop,she didn't give to craps!! My cashier rang for the other cashier to come because the line was getting long, so she came and said I'll help the next person. I was the next one in line at my register so I didn't go. When no one went, she yelled out " it would be great if one of you could come over here" so rudely and was slamming things around. No smile on her face either like my cashier. There was a lot of older people in there that didn't speak English so more than likely they didn't understand what she was saying. Great prices, especially on produce when you catch a sale. No frills here, but I'll take it at these prices. You have to bring your own bags, or purchases theirs at the store. You 'rent' a carriage for a quarter, but it's returned upon the carriage's return. The place is clean and well-stocked with the Aldi brand product. The staff is friendly and helpful. I went to check out the store aware of their cost saving tricks. I was not opposed to a quarter for a cart and getting it back on my return. I dont mind using cash or debit card, and I use my own bags already. I was also prepared to find their brands, and was looking forward to the great 50% off prices they said they would have. I didnt find great deals in the entire store, although there were a couple to be had. Bologna for 99 cents was a great deal. I dont like it, but the kids do and thats a really good price. However, the cereal was not cheaper than the price I pay at Market Basket (Big bag for 3.00 compared to small box for 2.00). Their spray butter was 20 cents cheaper than Market Basket, not 50% cheaper. It was a modge podge of items, you could not do your entire grocery order there, and Im not sure if they were trying to target folks who shop at Shaws or Stop and Shop where they have to have a bank in the store to afford the food prices, and supposedly offer a higher quality of food products. However, I certainly didnt find the costs to be 50% cheaper than Market Basket or Walmart. In some cases a few cents were saved here and there and an occasional higher savings. Went for the first time yesterday but purchased only a small amt of food. If you're not afraid to buy brand names you don't recognize then you will save a TON of money - on cereals, granola bars, canned and boxed soup, and other stuff. Just read the ingredients so you know what you're getting! I did't buy anything that had to stay cold (meat, frozen, dairy, produce) so my selections were limited. What the HELL is this ghetto place about? 25 cents to use a carriage. 4 very small crowded aisles filled with generic over-priced foods. Quality is questionable. Only one checkout line open. Very slow checkout process. When I was in line there were 4 people in front of me. Took 15 minutes to get checked out. They did not take credit cards or checks. Only cash or debit cards. I had a case with my soda in it and the clerk made me dump it into my carriage. No boxes/bags to pack your items. Clerks from HELL as they are NOT helpful. Think of getting Dollar Store groceries but paying a lot more than a Dollar. There is another store 5 minutes down the road called Market Basket with better prices, more brand name selections and super fast checkout lines (standard and express checkout) Why subject yourself to this to save pennies? HOWEVER if you are on a limited budget and don't mind the abuse and have plenty of time then by all means this is the place to go. read more

The first time I came to Aldi last month and found it a very good place to go for mostly used grocery. You would find fresh fruits and vegetables with very competitive price. yes I agree you may not be able to get all brand names. But it provide quality products with very low rate. They do make money by saving in other environmental friendly ways by not providing polythene, which i would prefer and may be a better idea for shopping. I like the way they organize their carts. no carts are laying around in parking lot. Also they accept only debit card which is another way to save money. If with all these ways they follow to save money and in return they provide things with very good price to customer its worth getting a good rating. I'm a caterer and if nothing else, know grocery stores. Friend raved about Aldi's (in Conn.) and with the Market Basket situation, gave this a try. Some generic brands if reading ingredients weren't of as much concern as the "fresh" foods -- I wouldn't feed 80% of it to the pigs. Small, dingy place featuring rows of small appliances and junk food. Not noted anywhere (like on the door?) was how to get a cart (outside and costs a quarter), that you need your own bags (which I do anyway) or more importantly that they don't take credit cards. I ran through an order of items I had found that I could use - a fraction of what I needed and I had to hunt for even that. Spent $70.00. Ended up leaving the cart in the middle of the aisle and walking out, never to return. Could have cashed a check at TD next door but I honestly felt I needed a shower when I got to my car -- don't normally shop at Shaws but went to the one on Rt. 28 and it looked awesome after coming from Aldis. I hear they are coming to Derry and Plaistow. Obviously, they have GOT to be better than Salem but I still question any store chain willing to sell produce in prime season that is already on it's way out. Dreadful, dreadful place. I love Aldis I bring my own bags or if it's not planned I buy a bag or two for a dime a piece. The milk and egg prices can't be beat. The produce can be hit or miss, but I have gotten watermelons bananas potatoes and been very pleased with what I purchased. Not many name brands, just a few scattered here and there but the aldis brands have been fine and are pretty cheap. The meats I bought were good too You can also find a variety of other things besides groceries. Plants. Footstools children's toys yard stuff. Rugs grills. You really never know how many "extras" you'll see!! Lines to check out can be long as there's usually only one or two people working the registers but I find it to be well worth my time and money read more

I'm giving up, though I've tried. I have gone a number of times in the past, and typically only get a hand full of items. I've ended up waiting a long time in the line as there is only one line open typically, and those people have basket full of items. I have left my items behind and left. So I've learned, wait in the parking lot until they've opened and be one of the first people inside. As usual, Im ready to check out in about 5 mins or so, and there is no one at the registers - so I have to track them done, wave my hands if they are doing work at the other end of the store, or just wait about 5 mins to find someone to check me out. Today, I arrived at 9:20, thinking that I will give them a few more mins to get established and be at the registered. I grabbed about 8 items and when I got to the front, one line open, people with cars full, one person in front of me with just 1 milk, and then another lady is immediately behind me. I gave up - put my items down and left the store. Just not worth the aggravation, frustration, etc. Just not going to go back. read more

How many food companies do you think there are? The brands you see at Aldi are actually name brands but under a different label. I know that because our one here in NY State carries milk that is from our local Byrne Dairy but the label has a different name on it. We've done all the taste tests (name brand vs. Aldi)......our NY stores are fabulous and the quality of the food compared to the name brand is great! I have cut my grocery bill in half! People are just sucked in by the name brands. We have a great selection here and wouldn't shop any place else. The quality of their products is great....their meats are really good. Our Aldi has frozen and fresh meats. I prefer to pack my own groceries.....it's not a big deal. But I guess people today just want to be waited on. read more

This review is for the snobbish individuals who think its like a family dollar, not even close. These name brands have been to the test by me, their sour cream and fresh salsa is the same product I had when UNOS PIZZERIA had chips and salsa. The reeses peanut butter cups cereal is the exact same at reeses brand however with a ten percent decrease in ingredients which actually taste better. Milk and eggs, perfect, cheeses, excellent quality, Waffles, syrup, sauces, frozen food, excellent, It blows my mind away people who wont shop here. This is by far the cheapest and most tasty store I have ever been too. They have a minimal selection and mostly generic, however their generic is restaurant distributor brands or actual name brand companies filling these boxes, your only kidding yourself here, so open your mind and try this place out and make some food at your house, and I bet you will like the food better than name brands or the exact same. I do 100-200 dollars every two weeks and I get great dinners. Fruits on the other hand is not a huge selection so for that, you would be best at a farm stand. Buy what you like, forget about name brand, and enjoy. Very simple concept. If you don't like it they replace your product and give you double your money back, are you kidding? I see one and two stars and I think who are these people, did you do an actual shop or did you walk in and say oh I don't like it. Feel the culture live the culture and you'll save money. read more

For the ones that think this place is strange go to Europe and you will get the same things. The people in this country are so spoiled by the big huge stores with all the name brands that they don;t think that anyone else can have the same in a smaller way. But if you give it a chance you will see that you save alot of money. Now I go once a week. I love it! When I come home I know the prices at the other stores and I compare and I save almost half of what I would spend there. Where can you get fresh and I mean fresh fruit for .99, and thats pineapples, apples, oranges, cantaloupes, and they are Delmonte so this is a brand name you have to look and try before you can criticize this great store... Sure, there's areas for improvement, and I realize Aldi might not be worthwhile to all customers to shop week in; week out, but it is worth checking out. The generic brands are no worse than their brand name counterparts in terms of quality, and on average, there's about 20% savings to shop here versus Market Basket for comparable products. At worst, the savings on some items can be marginal vs Market Basket, but don't let that stop you. From there, the only other thing is they don't supply bags; if you can get over that, don't let anything stop you. Don't expect much natural and organic food; they don't cater to this market; but generally this store caters to the core Market Basket shopper. read more

I went in to Aldi's to check it out. It is a different concept, but it was great. I bought whole wheat bread, chicken salad, fresh baby spinach, their version of hot pockets and trail mix and everything was excellent and very fresh. Everything came out to less than $9, which I thought was a great deal I buy as many store brands as I can when shopping to save money, unless I have a coupon and it's on sale. I will try a store brand once and if I like it I will continue to buy and use it. The quality seemed better than some of the area supermarkets store brands. Yes...bring your own bags and your debit card or cash. But, if you know that ahead of time and you don't mind buying store brands, you will like this store. Plus, their produce was very inexpensive. Strawberries were $1 and pineapple were $1.50. Half the price of any supermarket. Again, it's a different concept than your traditional supermarket, but it is worth a try. I liked it! read more

I'm giving them a weekly visit. Every week I have increased the number items purchased. I think most of the items I have purchased are as good but cheaper than other stores in the area. The prices are so low here, even if you buy organic the prices are still very low. I just tried the organic salsa and it was excellent! The only ingredients are vegetables and sea salt! The same thing is probably 4.99 at whole foods and I only paid 1.79. Tortilla chips were only 1.19 for a huge bag. Chips similar to lays were only 1.49. Corn flakes 1.19? You have to hate money if you are paying 3.99 at hannafords. Oh you have to put in a quarter for the cart and bring your own bags big deal. I save so much money here it's insane. The cashiers are so quick too. The lines move 5X as fast as anywhere else. Good job Aldi! read more
