So, on a weekend, we decided to take a ride and go check it out. It is an indoor farm stand open year round that carries all kinds of vegetables. They also have baked goods and....chicken pies, among other items. So...we decided to try a Chicken Pie. The price was $ 24.99 although we had to ask as the pies were not individually priced and there was no sign to tell you either. The result is the pie has chunks of dark and light chicken with literally no sauce. It was extremely expensive, and don't get me wrong I don't mind paying when something is really delicious. But this pie was far, far from that. I also thought the vegetables they sell were very expensive as well. Not a place I would return to.

But when you go down to pick up your first CSA and the email says "woohoo your bag will be ready at 2:00 pm and were so excited for the strawberries and everything to give you". I was handed the bag from the owner herself with nothing but store-bought groceries iceberg lettuce store-bought cherry tomatoes and cucumbers and store-bought strawberries and green onions nothing from her farm, she said I hope this makes you a nice salad! I said I'm sorry this is not what I expected from a CSA as anybody would I'm supposed to be getting fresh produce . Thinking, I can go to market basket myself and do this. When I said I was going to contact the farm but I didn't want it she called me a bitch in front of three of the customers and then started yelling wow wow wow so you just can't please some people! I told her this is very unprofessional and not the way you treat a customer she said don't worry I'll give you money back. There's a lot of things she could've done she could've gotten fresh produce from another farm and told us about it in the email and apologized for the first week of CSA ! Upon calling her after still no response she said she would mail me a check yet she took a debit online. She said because of my attitude I was an allowed back like I would step foot near her farm again!

They feature a deli and will make you a sandwich on the spot with some of the freshest ingredients I have ever tasted. The delightful and friendly woman who made my sandwich thanked me for my business and asked me to come again. It was nice to see gratitude for my patronage of their business, nice touch. I live in Hamilton, so I usually go to my local farm-stand but I would certainly make the drive to North Andover to visit Barker's farm-stand again!

Growing up, this farm was steps from my backyard and I would always walk over with the neighborhood hooligans to poke the animals and inhale some tasty fudge (fat kid). Barker's is one of, if not the oldest farm in town, dating back to 1642 (NA was established in 1646) and has been run by 10 generations of the Barker family. There's a cute little farmstand with fresh vegetables (corn!), baked goods (fudge!), fruit (apples!), flowers, plants, and whatever else. There is also an area around the back of the barn where you can go look at the variety of animals they have and take in a deep breath of fresh animal stench. Barker's also offers your seasonal needs such as pumpkins, Christmas trees, etc. In comparison, Smolak Farm in North Andover is your 5-star place to go, but Barker's will always have that special place in my heart and that's why I love it.

This time I bought lemon/pepper chicken, bacon/cheddar burgers, rib eye, and strip steak. Buy one, get one FREE on frozen meat! The boneless rib eye was $19.54, and the T-bone steak was $19.45. So, I spent $19.54 for the two. We tried their frozen strip steak and it was tender and delicious. Julie's Happy Hens sells a variety of organic eggs from chickens, ducks, and turkeys. A sweet little old lady from Hickory Nut Farm sells all things made out of goat's milk. I didn't buy her cheese or yogurt today, but I bought her goat's milk soap, and goat's milk brownie (as gifts). I also bought delicious corn, tomatoes, cuke, arugula, blueberries, and donut peaches--including organic produce from Gaouette Farm. (Lots of other produce--ranging from kale to beets to watermelon to apples--are available.) One of my favorite vendors is a mushroom purveyor: Mycoterra Farm. The beautiful oyster and shitake mushrooms (coupled with farmer's cheese and organic tomatoes) made for a very tasty lunchtime sandwich. I will be back next Sunday (hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), maybe to purchase some seafood or handmade scrubs and candles. Bakery items, jams, cheese, cereal, and other goodies are there, too.

There's a nice selection of produce, baked goods, and other things like cutting boards, vinegar, dried pasta, and there was even a knife sharpening truck! There was live music and a few tents selling ready to eat food. Worth checking out on a Saturday morning! The Saturday Child's bakery tent was completely sold out by 11a so definitely come early if you want their baked goods.

Lord knows my zucchinis don't even have flowers, so being able to pick up a few locally grown ones is awesome. They just had one counter of veggies around midday, but the barn they are using for a store is gigantic, and there were empty baskets stacked in one area and empty tables in another, so I assume it must fill up. The farm is gorgeous. There are beautiful rectangles of growing stuff everywhere. The people are friendly and they take credit cards, so that's super helpful, since I rarely have cash. I got some nice tomatoes and cucumbers (the latter better than the former, but it is really early and some of those earlier tomatoes are less flavorful, so I'm sure they'll get better), some zucchini and summer squash and green beans. Looking forward to my dinners this week with all those fresh veggies! They also had nice looking peppers (which we don't eat in this house due to a borderline allergy), and some potatoes, as well as some fruits. I was mainly after veggies, though. I understand they had lettuce somewhere, perhaps in the Coca Cola-style fridge I didn't check out, but from what I saw on the website, it was only romaine and iceberg. My favorite lettuce is Black Seeded Simpson, but the other "butter lettuces" in that family are good too. I dislike iceberg and am neutral on romaine. I'll be back! This place is not far and it's also near Shaw Farm, where I like to buy milk, so it makes for a nice trip. Lots of good food to be had!
