Market Basket is a full 20-25% less expensive than its competitors in the area for basically the same food. Yes, it's not as luxurious to shop in, it's usually mobbed, the aisles are tight and the parking lot sucks. Produce is not as great in some items, and they don't carry as many super-speciality foods as Whole Foods or Stop & Shop. However, the people who work there are amazing. They are abundant (try almost every checkout line open during rush) and helpful, and friendly, and the store is well stocked and well managed. No self checkout crap. You don't need it, there's always a line open. We'd kill for an upgraded facility like the nicer newer Market Baskets that do exist, but our Bellingham store crew, from the managers to the baggers are amazing, and make shopping here worth the visit. Their meat department is wonderful, the seafood is great and if you can get near the deli, they work hard and are great too. Finally, a shout out to the bakery and prepared food folks - they are awesome. The food is great and they couldn't be more helpful. We love MB, just wish it was as a new one. Oh, and don't go near the place the day before a major snowstorm, or any Sunday at noon. Plan your visit if possible. 5 stars for the staff and people and management, 3 for the facility. I sometimes like to be efficient and that is why I like the self checkout lanes at grocery stores...here, they don't have them. For the longest time I refused to shop at Market Basket. The place is always crowded. It didn't take me long to figure out why. The stock turns over quickly, so the food is always fresh. The quality of food at Market Basket is far superior to that at places like Stop & Stop, yet the prices are lower. One other thing: the employees are super nice, and will go to any length to help you find what you want. I hate to shop, but find the job much easier at Market Basket. read more

We shop here. Mostly every few months for our one big shopping. We go to other grocery stores in between for things, because Bellingham location and traffic is horrible. Most of the time we split the total and use 2 separate cards. We always have to ask if they know how to do this, they meaning cashiers, nod their heads yes and smile. Then at the time to pay have no clue how to do this and we need to call a manager. Tonight we spent the whole time listening to the girl on the register gabbing to the girl bagging. NON STOP TALK AND NOT IN ENGLISH. Very rude!!! I even said, in English, this girl doesn't shut up, and she kept talking, had no clue what I said. Unacceptable!!!!!! To boot they didn't put our water on our cart and I had to go back in and complain to a manager. Mentioned to him all they did was talk in their language and not pay attention to what they were doing. I love Market Basket! I'm surprised that people are complaining that it's so busy like it's the store's fault. BAKERY DEPT Last year I had my sons cakes made. Smash cake, party cake & cupcakes I found some photos I liked on Pinterest and she made them perfectly! Super savings! Full cart of food for $100! Bathroom is behind the seafood dept thru the double doors (might be the same at other Market Baskets). This is a larger store than the one in Ashland so although it is busy people are not right on top of you smelling your perfume or crashing your cart in a bumper car race you didn't know you were in. Almost everything food related is less expensive here. They have a big variety of fruits and veggies and staple items are the best deal. I haven't been crazy about their beef selection and I find the paper products are less at Walmart (maybe even Target). But I love the fresh breads and treats out of the oven. The smell of warm treats from the bakery are heavenly. You get a bang for your buck here and it is really is worth driving to one to find out and save! Another bonus is Walmart is right next door (same parking lot) so you can get your other items there without having to go back out on the road. Prices are the lowest of any grocery store in Mass. There is NO WAY to have a decent shopping experience at this location. The parking and traffic flow are insanely bad - the Town of Bellingham should be sued for creating this hazardous situation - 1 small exit for 5 huge stores - the emergency vehicles are always delayed. The aisles are always cramped with pallets and workers trying to keep the shelves stocked. Many times the store is totally out of dozens of items - including those on sale. The fish counter always has a putrid odor - but, the fish is mostly fresh. The meat is mediocre with the inflationary prices absurd - no different than any other store, When hamburg costs $4.99 a pound for 80% lean, you know the country is screwed up. Slowest Deli anywhere. Picked ticket and continued to shop. Went 6 isles and came back. 7 numbers went by. In defense of the employees, there are only two of them behind the counter with about 28 numbers outstanding. One gentleman took a ticket then did all the shopping, complete shopping and then came back and he was still 17 numbers away. He told me he didn't need that American cheese anyway. read more

I think I'm done with Market Basket, especially this location. Yes, the prices are usually pretty good, but the store itself is definitely a dump. I always feel dirty when I shop here. And while the store seems huge, they just don't seem to carry many of the brands I am after. This past weekend was the last straw. When the kid bagging doesn't have the sense not to put eggs in with soda bottles, I think I need to take my business elsewhere. And he didn't just put them in the same bad - he stood the eggs on end. Gross, always crowded, I have seen on countless occasions expired foods on the shelves, however what finally turned me away was when I found mold on the bread I bought before it's expiration. Worst MB ever. Moved to Bellingham from Northshore where we had MB in Chelsea and Revere. They had everything. This one is horrible. They are constantly out of something. The service desk is rude and obnoxious and when you return something, with a receipt, they are pissed off and they let you know. Especially the blonde that has been there many many years I was told.This is the rudest MB I have ever been to. They should take lessons from Revere, Chelsea and especially Burlington. Yes, the parking lot is a nightmare, the staff is less than awesome, and the selection is slightly limited, but you cannot beat Market Basket on price. Our weekly grocery bill is $50. It would be twice that at Star Market on Rt 109. Sure there's no antipasto bar, but this location is increasing their specialty food items all the time. I love that they have a lot of Portuguese food in their International aisle. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices are also on the rise. The deli is insane, but they do it the best way they can. There are always 5 or 6 people working behind the counter. You take a number and wait, or go do some shopping while they help other people, but hurry back because if they call your number and you're not there, they will NOT go back for you. They deal with crowds very well. The managers will help get everyone to a register in a fair way if it gets too insane. I try to go first thing Saturday or Sunday morning, or Mondays after work, and I've had very little wait at the registers. Simple fact is, the reason this place is so busy is it's the best in the area. We don't shop anywhere else. read more

I have been shopping at Market Basket for 20 years! Yes it needed improvements! They were done! The entire staff there now are so kind and helpful to me! The fish man, meat man, produce so friendly and helpful! Registers employees friendly! I went on Super Bowl Sunday!! Lines long! To be expected! I complimented my register girl and bagger! The ONLY reason I ever go to Market Basket is because their prices are so good. That being said: the parking lot is an atrocity if you ever try to go in there on the weekend, it is ALWAYS crowded - the aisles are jam-packed with people and their 18 kids and carriages. NO ONE goes here for just a couple things. It stinks like a fish market. And lastly, their cashiers have been SO rude to me in the past. I once had a cashier yell at me and make me sign for my credit card again because it didn't match exactly my signature on the back of my card. Yeah, the first thing I'd do with a stolen credit card is buy $30 of groceries. Market Basket is definitely an experience you have to psych yourself up for. You know it's going to be crowded, regardless of the time of day. You know you're going to be fighting people just to move in an aisle. You know you're going to spend 10 minutes getting in and out of the parking lot. But you also know you'd spend $150 at Shaw's where you're only spending $80 at Market Basket. I am a Market Basket pro. Having braved the waters of the Somerville location ... (If you have never visited, then do a shot and head over) Burlington, Woburn ... I've been to a lot of their stores. Chelsea still holds the special place in my heart. Right under my bullet proof vest. Anyway - Bellingham is not as cramped as Somerville - and is MUCH cleaner. But it isn't as spread out as Chelsea - and it is lacking in the organic section a bit... Overall, the prices still can't be beat. The Pros: this store has terrific prices and I can find items there that I can't at other stores: most recently my favorite Progresso soup and some unusual meat items for my dog. I've found the staff to be friendly and nice, although not always terribly knowledgeable. The Cons: the place has a funky smell, is ugly, crowded and cramped. The parking lot is a nightmare. The Bellingham Market Basket is the only place I go food shopping. While the parking is tight, the place is almost always mobbed, and the aisles narrow, the price and selection are worth it. They also have store brand products that , are in most cases as good as the national brands and much less expensive. I probably save $30-$40 a week had I shopped at Shaws or Stop and Shop. My only complaint is the odor in the seafood area. While I have to believe they meet health department standards, management should really do something about this. I regularly shop at this location. I'm here once a week although I don't always check in. I have been shopping at this location for approx. 17 years. Wow! it's been that long. I consider my self a regular. It's like your favorite sweatpants or pajamas. There older, not as good looking but they a super comfortable. Market Basket Bellingham is comforting and predictable. My experience has always been ok. But I always save money. The employees can be hit or miss. I have taken notice of many employees that have been at this store for many years. It must be a good place to work. The dairy manager can be super helpful. The produce is usually good. They move so much stock i don't think it has time to even begin to go bad. Seafood good, Deli is good but sometimes you feel Yourself getting old in line waiting for your number. The isles can be cramped, the store can be overcrowded especially around holidays and weekends but I save money. The layout is quirky like dairy in front which is great if you need to grab a gallon of milk but then be stalled in a line. Produce is in the back corner. I think both category placements has to do with the way stock arrives at the store. Sometimes that item you always buy may be out of stock. My Issues are small when compared to the money I save. I have comparison shopped elsewhere and had better overall experience. You pay for the presentation and new better layout at those other stores. I really don't like the parking lot(it's shared with Walmart) it can take a while to find a spot but eventually you do and you then can go shopping. I absolutely avoid this store around any major Holiday. Be warned. You will loose your S*^! At least once. Just plan extra time take deep breaths and maybe some Ativan also grease the elbows. Overall it's ok. But I save money and maybe have some good laughs on my way out. Choose your check out line by the bagger. It's an art form which requires a certain set of skills. A good bagger is a real gem. Stick with your bagger, get to know them encourage them. This will may be the difference between bread squished by a watermelon or being able to carry 4 bags of skillfully packaged shopping bags in to your house, less trips in and out is good. You will save money by shopping here but you will wait at least 20 minutes in the deli line. This store is always packed no matter what time of day and you will always have employees stocking items with their carts blocking the isles. Then there are the oblivious people standing in the middle of the aisles talking on their cell phones blocking everyone. Parking is atrocious and the store appears very unclean. AND whatever you do, DONT use the bathroom unless your life depends on it. UGH. read more

Market Basket is great, and they deliver on their promises - low prices on everyday grocery items. Their weekly sales make the deals even better! Great for stocking up your pantry, and I've been known to go there and buy a few Lunchables and fruit cups just because they're so inexpensive there! I don't know why it's rated as inferior to other food stores in the area because they cater to a different need. It's like comparing a shoe store to the footwear department at a super-center, honestly. As for some of the employees not knowing where an item is, they've always found the answer for me, or asked someone else. Many people who work at the front of the store aren't overly familiar with the layout of the store because their job is at checkout, not stocking. If you're looking for a certain item, asking at the service desk is much faster because they can page someone from the appropriate department. As for the parking situation, I'm convinced that plaza was designed back when people rode horses everywhere. Parking closer to Barnes and Noble (even just a row over) eases the traffic issue. Beyond that, a little patience goes a long way! If you're willing and able to walk, I've never had a problem parking at Barnes and Noble or closer to McDonalds, and walking! The Bellingham Market Basket has sort of turned. And not for the better. I used to frequent the Bellingham area very often a few years ago for work, and ever since have been inclined to visit often for shopping as I used to stop at many of the stores in this huge retail stretch after work. However, for grocery shopping purposes, I rarely drive all the way out here for just Market Basket. The main point of that story... this used to be the only Market Basket I shopped at. Now, it's better than some (the one at the Westgate Mall in Brockton is horrible!), but worse than many others. Specifically, I've found that the Ashland Market Basket is considerably more spacious and open. This wouldn't normally knock a Yelp rating by two stars, but due to the over-congestion of this store and the inability to MOVE throughout the store with any sort of DECENT space is absurd! This place is always busy and always in a jumble. Checkout isn't horrible, and ever until I started going to the Ashland store I thought that Market Basket's prices outweighed it's negatives. That being said, there is no reason for me to come here if the one in Ashland is the same distance (or possibly closer to my house.....) and causes much less of a hassle, and at many times less traffic. This store is fine for convenience on weekdays for groceries, but beware on weekends, because it can really be a madhouse, and you won't be able to even find decent parking.
