I had a successful Lasik operation done by Dr.Mandel. The operation site along with the staff in Saratoga offered professional, caring and dedicated service. It might feel a bit rushy as they have other patients scheduled on same date but they get the job done. The cost was affordable and the caring package was detailed. Points to improve include 1) provide more clear, up-to-date, on time instructions, 2) the Castro Valley Lasik specialist often doesn't pick up call, 3) less rush patients on site and remind patients more on what to do, to bring, and to keep on the surgery date. 4) provide receipts for payments on time. read more

Exceptional Cataract Surgery Experience with Dr. Mandel and Team I am currently one week and one day post-op on my right eye and three days post-op on my left, and I can say without hesitation that this entire experience has been truly life-changing. I first visited Dr. Mandel and his outstanding team on April 3 for a comprehensive examination and consultation. Expect to spend a couple of hours at the office--they are extremely thorough. From the moment I arrived, the staff treated me with genuine care and professionalism. Every step of the process was explained in detail, leaving me fully informed and confident. At the conclusion of the exam, Dr. Mandel confirmed that I had cataracts and recommended surgical correction. My right eye surgery was scheduled for May 30. On the day of the procedure, I was impressed with the level of communication and care provided--not only by Dr. Mandel, but also by the care team and the anesthesiologist, Dr. G. I was awake during the surgery, but thanks to their expertise and calming approach, I felt completely relaxed. Most importantly, I experienced zero pain or discomfort--during or after the surgery. Everything was explained as it happened, so I was never left wondering what was going on. After the procedure, I went home, followed my eye drop regimen, and woke up the next morning seeing clearly with my right eye--without glasses. It was surreal and exciting to have one eye with crystal-clear vision while the other remained blurry. I returned for a check-up on Saturday, where Dr. Mandel confirmed everything looked great. I went back again on Monday, and the team gently cleaned my eyelashes from the drops and reassured me that healing was progressing beautifully. My left eye procedure followed the next Wednesday. As before, everything was communicated clearly and with care. This time, I experienced a bit more discomfort post-op, which I managed with ibuprofen and Refresh Plus eye drops every hour. At my next-day follow-up, Dr. Mandel placed a "bandage" contact lens to reduce irritation--what a game changer. The relief was almost immediate, and my eye felt much better afterward. I was referred to Dr. Mark Mandel by my optometrist office (shameless plug for Saratoga Vision Center...they are a fantastic group/office) and was told that they have an exclusive relationship with Dr. Mandel - and for good reason. From the moment I set up the appointment, there was a very succinct, transparent, and PERFECTED process that ensured I was provided ample information, absolute care for my safety, and an air-tight procedure that would benefit my eyes and their health in the aggregate. Dr. Mandel met with me during the consultation, and it was obvious from his demeanor as well as his staff, that I was receiving the best care possible. He is a consummate professional and had such a calming presence that really put me at ease for an arguably terrifying procedure. I was quite overwhelmed and anxious leading up to my consultation because of the fact that your sight, like all of your other senses, play an integral role in your life. You don't want to muck about. All of those fears were quelled and removed entirely after my consultation as well as on the procedure day itself. On the day of the procedure, I arrived in the office to be greeted by several very lovely front desk staff who, once again, walked me through the steps of the procedure as well as the post-op regiment very patiently and carefully, making sure I knew every portion. They then handed me a blue bag containing a pair of sunglasses, a place to hold all of your medications, and a stress ball to cling on to in the operating room in case you have any anxiety. I cannot overstate how much care they show throughout the entire process. After the operating room was prepped, I was gently ushered in and laid down on the table for the procedure. Everyone in the operating room was just as warm, courteous, and caring as the front desk staff. The fluidity and experience of all of the staff in the room, as well as Dr Mandel, was palpable. To my surprise, I immediately felt at ease. As Dr. Mandel began, he talked me through his actions and assured me that everything was going excellently, which it was. The procedure itself was complete within minutes! It was ABSOLUTELY painless! The only "painful" part was when they had to remove the tape that held my eyelashes away from my eyes. Upon completing the procedure I was congratulated on my "new" eyes and went through a final checkup post-op before I went home and began my post-op care with guidance and checkups from my usual optometrist. You can elect to go back to Dr. Mandel's office for these checkups if you wish! I am writing this 9 days post-op (Dr. Mandel and I decided on the PRK procedure), and my optometrist and I cannot believe the changes to my vision. I wake up every morning giggling that I can finally see so remarkably well! The best part is PRK really sets in over six months, so I have so much to look forward to! I cannot thank Dr. Mandel and his incredible staff enough! Undergoing this surgery with him and his team is one of the best decisions I've made in my life. I have been seeing Dr. Mandel and his staff for over a year. I was referred to him for cataract surgery. However, my eyes were so dry (despite years of treatment to remedy ) I had to do extensive specialized treatment to prepare my eyes to accept the procedure and have it be useful. Sorry if TMI. Dr. Mandel and his staff have always been professional, courteous and caring. Happily, I have had the cataract surgery now and I'm very happy with the results. All of the staff went above and beyond to answer my questions, whenever, and respond to my needs. I was pleasantly surprised, and frankly shocked when Dr. Mandel called me twice on a Saturday afternoon to discuss options for the procedure. I have nothing but positive things to say, except occasionally, there has been a significant wait for my scheduled office visits, but I know that's because he's providing outstanding care to others. read more

Had LASIK in both eyes and the results are absolutely amazing. I have better vision now than I had even with my contacts! I had always been a bit afraid of having it done simply because it seems like a scary thing, but after learning how safe it really is, I decided to go for it. Dr Mandel and the staff are very friendly and make the whole process as comfortable as possible. The procedure itself is very quick and painless. The only discomfort I felt was shortly after the procedure my eyes burned a little and teared up for about an hour. Dr. Mandel performed a cornea transplant/cataract surgery on my right eye last year (2024). There were quite a few complications after the procedure, so I waited to have the other eye done after my eye was completely healed. I had to go back many times until my eye was finally ok. I wasn't too happy with a few things in addition to my surgery complications, like never getting a live person on the phone, feeling like the doctor was always in a hurry, or that he was never really listening to me. I was willing to overlook all that - I know doctor offices are very busy, but what happened when I was ready to have my other eye done was the final straw! My surgery was scheduled for 3 months from the time I scheduled. So, I arranged for time off work, for rides to surgery and follow-up appointments, short-term disability etc. The doctor's office sent in the prescription for my eye meds to start taking a week ahead of the surgery, so I was pretty sure everything was set. A few days before the scheduled surgery, I realized I had not heard from them on when to arrive. I called them and was told they were still waiting for a donor match, and someone would call me back. Now we are two days before my surgery, and I still haven't heard from them. I felt like I was being ghosted. I called them the day before the surgery and was told they still didn't have a donor match, and I needed to reschedule the surgery. Ok, I understand not having a donor match, but what really upset me was that I was told I would have to reschedule and there wasn't an opening for another 3 months, and it was not guaranteed they would have a donor match at that time. What? Is this the way this is done with donor matches? ( I found out later from my new doctor that is not the way it is done.) I thought for sure they would tell me I'm on a list or something and would be notified as soon as a donor match was found. No, I have to wait another 3 months, reschedule time off work, re-do disability paperwork, etc., and then hope there's a donor match. Something did not sound right. I'm done with these guys! I found a great new ophthalmologist and am so glad I do not have to deal with this shady business again. read more

I had an awful experience with the Castro Valley office, just with a consultation, not even a procedure itself. Usually you go to a doctor for some type of advice or benefit, but the office "consultant" who talked to me was anything but pleasant or beneficial in any way. I waited 3 months for a consultation with Dr. Mandel, and he never even bothered speaking with me. Instead he sent a consultant to tell me I wasn't a candidate for "his services". Then the consultant proceeded to have an attitude with me because the office wouldn't be making money off of me. Instead of offering "alternatives" for my situation she offered... BAD ATTITUDE. She then proceeded to give me a "fuck off" and suggested I go to one of their competitors who does the exact same thing Dr. Mandel does, even after claiming beforehand the procedures wouldn't work for me. Truly despicable human being. Dr. Mandel may actually be a great surgeon, I will never know, but his consultant is despicable in attitude, and the fact that Dr. Mandel never even stepped out to meet me after I waited 3 months to see him, is certainly questionable. read more
