Highly recommended by a friend from way back when I still used to live in New Jersey 6yrs ago. Over the years, I would simply fly to NorCal "to get fixed" in between injuries brought upon by my varied sports activities. Albeit most of those injuries were minor, two major ones stands out. One was post surgical repair of an MCL and ACL from a skiing and fencing mishap back in 2011. Not wanting to miss the San Francisco full marathon in 2012 that I had already signed up for, I flew to NorCal desperate of Mark's intervention. After an extensive "fix" --- 18 months post-op; I crossed the San Francisco full marathon finish line. Now, a SoCal transplant, I just got back from seeing Mark a week ago. I needed help with a nagging pain to my left shoulder that sustained a 12mm separation from crossfit thrusters and archery with a 42lb. bow. After 18 physical therapy sessions and 1 cortisone injection to the left shoulder - with no relief in sight - I flew to see Mark last week. Methodical in his assessment of the area in problem, Mark always ascertains whether there are any contraindications to the treatment and immediately formulates a plan. The plan is essentially a decision as to which of a number of massage techniques is deemed to be appropriate for my "highly abused and bruised" body. He uses a variety of manipulative techniques ranging from light and superficial stroking to deep and vigorous kneading of tissues. He manipulates soft tissues and joints to relieve pain, stress and tension. In addition, Mark possesses an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy with special understanding of the muscular and skeletal systems. 90-minutes later, I walked out of Mark's office feeling completely "overhauled". Mark came highly recommended by a friend. Since taking up running I developed Piriformis Syndrome (simply put, glute muscles compress the sciatic nerve). I'd tried stretching and rolling, but nothing was helping. Mark took the time to discuss the issues I was having and got a good picture of the activities that I do before getting started. Six years ago I had spinal surgery as a result of an old snowboarding injury. For the last five years, I've been a regular client of Mark's to help me deal with the chronic pain in my neck and right shoulder. His practice is in a little converted house in a residential section of Livermore. The facility is clean, decorated in an earthy, soothing way, and shared with an herbalist, chiropractor, and acupuncturist. Mark uses a variety of techniques to stretch, release, and relax the muscles. It's because of his expertise that I can handle this constant discomfort almost med free. He's really strong, which I like for deep tissue work, but will customize your massage exactly to your liking to send you into a trance-like bliss (for 50 mins. at least!) He's intuitive, immediately finding any blockages, and knowing exactly what to do to release them. He's also interactive, asking if the pressure is ok or if there are specific areas troubling you. Best of all is his energy and vibe: he's very professional, personable, and funny! And no creepy factor (like I've experienced with other massage therapists); I've never felt uncomfortable during one of our sessions, even when I saw him for pre-natal massage. I have been running races the last year or so and started to get pain on the side of my leg. I was training for my 1st half marathon in May so I was getting concerned that I would not be able to run the race due to the pain. I started researching massage therapists when I came across Mark's website. I decided to give Mark a try as I was desperate to 'fix' the pain I was feeling every time I would run. At first I was skeptical because as he says on his website he isn't the 'typical' massage therapist. He is true to his word. After a few sessions with his bodywork and education on foam rolling and such, I started to feel better. The pain on the side of my leg started to diminish and finally go away. Even though, I 'whined' during the sessions he helped me push through it. Because of this, I was able to run my half with no pain and in great time (2:36)! I'm still seeing Mark and preparing for another half. He is truly an expert in his craft, has educated me so that I can become a better athlete and most of all he is friendly and caring. Mark came highly recommended by a friend. I have been running marathons for the last 5 years. During my last run I had an issue with my hip and was very painful for weeks after the marathon. Mark is very knowledgable and asked all the questions Before we started in on our session. Apparently I was not rolling my IT band correctly. Mark took the time to review how I should be rolling, stretching after my runs and daily activities. I am know going on my third visit and I clearly haven't had any issues with my hip/IT band since my first visit. He also followed up with me to see how I was doing after the massage. I first went to Mark in early 2005. Earlier, I had fallen on boiler plate tracks in a cross country ski race and had crunched my neck in such a way that I felt like I had seriously injured it. After three or four sessions with Mark, the neck muscles begin to loosen up, the stiffness went away, I could turn my head again. I was healed. A year or so latter, when I would get up in the morning, I was so stiff and the back pain was so bad that I could not bend over to tie my shoes. Gradually, I would regain flexibility as the morning wore on. But every morning it was the same thing. Again, Mark to the rescue. He immediately diagnosed the problem as tignt IT bands (this is a leg muscle and not a back muscle, go figure). I didn't even know what an IT band was until I went to him. Well, he started massaging these things. I could feel how tights the IT bands were when he started massaging them, and the process was extremely uncomfortable. I was bouncing all over his table. I wasn't sure I wanted to do this again. Well, the very next morning came the big test. Carefully getting out of bed, I stood up straight and very slowly begin to bend over and I kept bending over. It was a miracle (OK that is more than a slight exaggeration) but it was such a relief. I could now sit down and bend over to tie my shoes, which I had not been able to do for the last several months at this time in the morning. The real test came in the subsequent months when I would go for three or four weeks without a massage, and the discomfort would come back and I would be back on Mark's table for rehabilitation, AGAIN. Mark encouraged (fussed at) me on more than one ocassion to begin using the foam roller on the IT bands. Finally, I got in the routine (daily) of using the foam roller most of the time. As a result, I have developed a symbiotic relationship with the foam roller. As I fast approach the age of 65, a weekly massage with Mark has become a must. Every once in a while I think about skipping a week. If Mark finds that I am more stiff than usual, he begins to interrograte me on whether or not I have been using the foam roller, and then I have to confess my sins. I am twenty-six now - ten years later and I have been to physical therapists, numerous massage therapists, and plenty of doctors who did not know what to do with me. I ended up seeing Mark after several brutal nights of falling asleep while nursing my infant. My shoulders and neck were a mess and only a guy was available. Not a fan of a man pushing all of my cellulite up to one meeting place, I was resistant but in too much pain. That was almost 5 years ago. Mark is the BEST!!! I have been seeing Mark for a few years now and I refuse to go anywhere else. As a dental hygienist I am always putting myself into awkward positions and am constantly causing strain to my body.
