Real Piccata

I have to keep the reviews coming every couple of years to reaffirm that this is still one of my favorite Italian places in the country. I love the atmosphere, the food, and the overall vibe. They continue to have outdoor seating as long as possible during the appropriate seasons, but sitting inside is a delight as you have a chance to get to know your fellow patrons. I almost always get a veal dish here and their veal is as tender and as delicious as any I have ever had. The staff is always very friendly, helpful, and seem to enjoy working there. Mario himself as often roaming the restaurant making sure everything is going well.

I love an old school, Italian spot with reliable food, great service, and a cozy atmosphere. This place has been around forever and I finally tried it on a Friday night. It was crowded, but service was quick and the food was good. We split the Mario salad and the Rigatoni Roma. I love that they still give free bread service and that everyone seems like they know each other. Mario introduced himself to us and you can tell that it's such a family place. I would definitely come back!

So delicious and authentic! We loved everything, the calamari, chicken piccata, chicken Parmesan, the wine, the gelato! So good; and Courtney is the best server!

Love that they take reservations. Sign at hostess stand (nicely) asks diners not to exceed the 90 minute limit. Rez was for 5:30, adult daughter & l were one of the first tables seated as they open at 4:30pm. Our server was Eric. Very pleasant young man. Let us know what the specials were. Good pacing in terms of taking our drink order, then our food order. Did not feel rushed. Complimentary warm bread with EVOO and parm. Bread was just ok. Did not look scratch made but the fact that it was warm and complimentary was a plus. Restaurant was appropriately dimly lit, not too dark. One TV by the bar had Food Network on, the other had college basketball game, a plus. I ordered the Caprese salad, very fresh tasting, tomatoes were firm, not mushy. Would have liked more basalmic vinaigrette, but otherwise, tasty. Had a glass (two really!) of Drylands Sav Blanc. Very nice wine. Daughter ordered Jambalaya Tortellini, which had a good spice, lots of chicken and sausage, 4-5 nice sized shrimp. Would order again. I had the grilled salmon and asparagus with roasted red pepper sauce. Asparagus was perfectly cooked, firm and not mushy. Good portion. Salmon was cooked well, moist, but not really flavorful so l was glad for the red pepper sauce. That being said, red pepper sauce could have been a bit more flavorful. Either add salt or pepper or make it spicier. Got Mario's Mom's recipe Tiramisu to go. Oh my! Very very light, not a gut bomb. Moist, lightly sweet, nice drizzle of chocolate sauce on top. Highly recommend this dessert. When we left at 6:30, it was filling up and lively. Definitely would go back! I see they have an outdoor seating area for warmer weather. Would love to dine al fresco!

We really loved our dinner here! Visited on a Wednesday evening and we were seated immediately. We ordered the vodka pasta and meat sauce lasagna. Both were very tasty, lasagna was the stand out. Really appreciated the old school vibes of the place, immediately felt at home stepping into Mario's. The main reason I plan to come again is because of the quality of service. Lots of places have great food in Chicago, but most don't compare to the level of service at Mario's table.

Good service, good food, and great prices all around. I don't recall what dish i ordered below but it was very tasty along with the creme brûlée. I think they could do with improving the ambiance and increasing the lighting a bit but other then they all around enjoyed experience.

I have walked past this place repeatedly without thinking anything of it. My friends and I were craving Italian on a Monday. Honestly, we kind of ended up here by chance because the other two places we wanted to try were closed on Monday... Truly went in with no expectations. The atmosphere is super casual and homey--perfect for a weeknight dinner or first date. We started off with the fresh, warm, crusty bread (comes before the meal). They also leave Parmesan on the table, and my "hack" is mixing it with the olive oil and dipping the bread--so good! Our server was kind, quick, and gave us wonderful suggestions. I decided to get the special which was a rigatoni vodka with spinach, sausage, and fresh mozzarella. However, I swapped out the sausage with grilled chicken. They are definitely flexible and will make these changes if you request! The pasta was fantastic. It was rich, had the right amount of sauce, incredibly flavorful, and I even got to take some home for lunch. Also tried a couple of bites of ricotta cheesecake, which was pretty ordinary--wouldn't get it again. Our server informed us that 80% of guests are from Gold Coast/Old Town neighborhoods, but I feel it's worth a trip from anywhere! Truly a neighborhood gem and will be returning.

Bar Mar is a solid spot in Downtown Chicago. The interior decor and atmosphere was great for a nice…read moredinner. Most of the food was tremendous. My favorites were the crab cake, Cobb salad, and short rib. The crab cake was very soft and had a nice texture to it. It was one of the best crab cakes I've eaten. The Cobb salad was also very light and shareable. The short rib main course was very tender, and it came with crispy potatoes as well. Some of the other items such as the Philly cheesesteak and Asian tacos were just ok. They were also both very small in quantity relative to their price. The desserts were magnificent as well, especially the deconstructed key lime pie and sticky toffee pudding. Both of them were phenomenal. The service throughout my meal was excellent. My waitress gave us some nice recommendations, and the staff came by often. I would definitely recommend to visit Bar Mar, and I look forward to coming back myself when I am in Chicago.

Last…read moretime we ate at Jaleo and found it underwhelming but put it down to the fact that we had just returned from an amazing culinary trip to San Sebastian. We really admire Jose's philanthropic work and want to love his restaurants but truth be told, if you forget about the glitzy decor, the food is just average. We tried several appetizers; the Hamachi Cone, Caviar Cone, Asian Taco, Neptune's Pillows, Shrimp Cocktail and Iberico Jamon. We also shared a bottle of Cava. Everything was fine but to be frank the Shrimp Cocktail was the best thing we ate, simple and perfectly fresh. The service was pushy, when a server wants to take you order less than 3 minutes after sitting down, it feels like you're on a conveyor belt. We felt the prices were way out of line, with tip I spent almost $500 for a bottle of cava and appetizers for two people, for that, the food should have been more memorable. We spent the same amount for two off us to have the 12 course tasting menu at Atsumeru a couple of weeks ago and Bar Mar's food isn't in the same league. We will continue to financially support Jose's World Kitchen but not his restaurants.

Tasty drinks - the grapefruit pilsner was a perfect choice for a warm spring evening, and our server was funny and sweet. Sticky ribs appetizer was spot on, with just enough heat to keep it interesting. We shared the fish and chips - perfectly cooked, crunch and sweet, great fries! House made slaw and tartar sauce was out of this world! Gotta make one comment on something we didn't have. The next table over, two middle aged women order cheeseburgers. When they came out I almost regretted ordering the fish. They were huge, juicy, and looked incredible. This two ladies, drinking their Chardonnays polished them off, that's how good they were. Next time... Dessert? Why not? Sticky toffee cake please. Perfect with a cup of black coffee. Out the door and on our way - we'll be back! Thanks!

Overall I was having a good experience. The food was OK. The menu was limited. Oh btw, the special that day was a $70 wag goo burger. That interaction between me and the server reminded me of a car salesman trying to sale me undercoating for the car i just purchased. REALLY I can't make it up. The experience dropped to a single star as our dining experience was nearing an end. The manager of the front of the house. Made a conscious effort to make it clear that the table we were dining was needed by waiting customers. I've never ever experienced this before in any restaurant in the Loop. I can't and will not recommend dining here. This is why I'm giving 1 star. I my opinion The Dearborn maybe they need to be in a different location. Maybe located far west of the Loop. I would suggest instead of Dearborn maybe Halsted St. and probably change their name to The Halsted. Im not going back. OH btw good luck in your new location.

Everything in here was prepared just right - the lobster roll had buttery, fluffy, soft rolls with delightful chunks of lobster inside. Them rolls were filled and overflowing!! The Lobster Rolls come with chips and a drink - the chips were great for dipping into the Clam Chowder Soup that you can order if you wish to make it a combo. And the soup itself was sooo soothing and yummy - I loved how creamy and rich it tasted without being too heavy. Everything is freshly prepared after ordering, but it still wasn't much of a wait at all to have everything come out and service in general was very efficient and friendly. The space is very intimate, cozy, and warm inside, with some Cape Cod/Lobster themed portraits on the walls and string lights providing a lovely glow. Luke's Lobster has their thing and they do their thing flawlessly - getting a Lobster Roll with Clam Chowder Soup here is ALWAYS a good move.

They offer personalized menus therefore I requested one with the reservation. When I arrived I noted two menus behind the hostess stand but they were labeled and neither with my husband's name. I asked the hostess if there was a menu for my husband. She looked up the reservation, said "no and it's probably too late to make one". (Although we were half an hour early having drinks at the bar.) Then she stated that they had a generic birthday menu that they could give him with no attempts to try and provide what was requested ahead of time. We were sat at an extremely small table and he was provided a regular menu which was given to him per the directive of said hostess. The manager came to the table to greet us as I'm assuming the sever was behind. I spoke to him about the menu and he asked if I made the request along with the reservation and I told him that I did. He said that he needed to verify. After doing so he came back and agreed that I had and said happy birthday to my husband and offered us a half a glass of "bubbly" which we reluctantly accepted. Then everyone went on as if nothing happened. We didn't receive an apology. There was no offer to satisfy us in any other way. (A decent table upgrade would have been nice,) Then I see the same glass of champagne wing offered to another couple celebrating a birthday while sitting in a large booth. There was a large table next to us with a couple celebrating an anniversary. Then a younger couple came in and was told to choose a table wherever they would like. The food was great. The wait staff was excellent but I did not appreciate the way we were treated. I don't want to say it was racism but I was made to feel... different. Side note. I visited Maple and Ash (a sister restaurant) in Arizona for my birthday a couple of years ago. They printed the menu for me but spelled my name wrong. When it was mentioned it was immediately corrected. That's why I'm so confused as to what the big deal was.
