I'm surprised by all the bad reviews. My experience is based solely on the first floor service. I came for lunch this week around noon. Students are out of school for the year so it was pretty empty and we were seated right away. Our waitress was very attentive and everything came out quick. I ordered a reuban with a side salad. The reuben was super good with really thin meat. We didn't even go at a time with specials and with subbing a side - my meal was still only $10. Very reasonably priced. Mario's in Oakland is a great lunch spot. It is never terribly crowded and they menu has a lot of great options. I usually go with a salad or wrap. I love that you have options of sides to pick from including fries or a side salad. The service is average but the staff is always very helpful and friendly. Came with my gal pals on a Thursday afternoon for their happy hour (5-7pm) and had a GREAT experience. Their well drinks are $2 during happy hour which is such a steal! Our server was super sweet and attentive. She came around to us often and made sure to check if we wanted one more round before happy hour ended which was much appreciated. We also ordered the saloon fries to split. It was a big portion with plenty of bacon, but nothing to write home about. Standard bar food. I recommend only going here if you're a young undergrad college student. The crowd seemed like a frat party and not a bar, some of the people there didn't look a day over 17 so I felt out of place. Their seating is lacking. The drinks are ok but not very strong. The doormen or bouncers (if you wanna call them that), there were 3 young men looking at IDs and they just stared at you while in the bar. I'd never be back but maybe just not my scene and that's ok. The staff here is incredibly disrespectful. I was here for a private event, and before even walking in the door, the bouncer was making fun of the guests and talking down to someone who was asking which line she should get in. Later in the night, despite having plenty of people on the floor and behind the bar, no one was responsive. I got cursed out by a bartender and got a talking to about "rolling my eyes" I was sober, but she still demanded I leave all because I tried to get a plastic cup for water (the top floor was a dry floor) because she wasn't attentive. It's a shame because the drinks are good, but the ambience always fails because they're constantly getting in trouble for letting in underaged people so now are overcompensating with rude staff. read more

Every Wednesdays they have trivia night with prizes for the top three winning teams. They have outdoor seating and usually a lot teams form. I believe teams must be at least 2 people with no max? They have drink deals like $3 voodoo IPA. Not the cleanest or nicest bar but the trivia night was really fun to do with friends. You play through an app you download ahead of time and there's a total of 4 rounds with breaks in between. It starts at 8pm and usually ends at 10pm. The newest Marios' Oakland just opened in the old Peter's Pub. It is similar to the other two Mario's and a good place to meet and have a cold one and watch sports or just hang out. Nice addition to Oakland. read more

The drinks are great! The vibe is fun especially for college kids. Unfortunately the pros are outweighed by the terrible, terrible encounters I had with the staff. I've returned several times to give it another try and only have been treated nastily. The blatant disrespect and plain rudeness was shocking to me. Actually hate this place and the bartenders. I dont know if management tells them to this or its on their own fruition but they keep your tab open when you pay with card without even asking you knowing that when its still open at the end of the night they can add an 18% tip. I understand college students dont always tip but it is simply not how to handle business. This location is new to me, but it has been in Oakland for a while now. It's the newest Mario's to be installed, but follows the same style as the other locations in Pittsburgh. We dined here for happy hour. It was middle of the week during the holidays, so the students were not around. It was fairly slow, which worked to our advantage, but I'd imagine it gets packed given its location. They have a $5 food menu for happy hour. It's pretty extensive offering things from apps (like buff chick dip) to small snacks and meals (like sliders). Our table opted to order a few things off the menu and split them. We each ordered a round of beer. This I think is the best part- the draft list was half off during happy hour, making it ~$3/pint! Woo! I think our waitress said that, but I had forgotten until we received the bill and it was dirt cheap. Their draft list isn't super large, but it does have a lot of seasonal goodies on it. The food was decent, for $5. I would definitely go again for that price, but probably not if it was full priced. We ordered buffalo chicken dip, sliders and nachos to share. The dip was a little on the smaller side, and there were only 3 sliders, but again, its $5. Nachos were huge, good move there. The only downside was the service wasn't great. I mean, it's a college bar, so you can't expect a lot, but our server mixed up our drinks. My friend, who is allergic to gluten and cannot drink beer, was served my IPA while I had her cider. It was a quick fix once I noticed, but it could've been rough for my friend, had she accidentally drank mine. And it took a while to get everything out to us, but maybe they just were understaffed that night? Anyway, it was good enough to bring me back and I look forward to my next happy hour there! read more

I decided to give myself a day to clear my thoughts before I wrote this. Queue scene: My friend and I were avid Peters goers years ago in college. We decided to go to now Mario's before the first Pitt basketball game yesterday. We walk in and while our first thought was wow it's different, it was cool. Lots of tables and TVs. So we go upstairs and I'm just like let's get a pitcher. Mind you, I am not a cheap beer lover but I think the standard should still be the same. I order a pitcher of Miller Lite. I waif for it and I watch the keg kick halfway through. I figured oh she will dump it out, or usually I've had people just give me whatever was there and I'll pay for something else. Can you guess what she did? This lady PUT THE PITCHER UNDER THE BUD LIGHT TAP AND FILLED THE REST OF IT. I was in shock. She hands it to me and I say "wait did you just fill that with 2 separate beers?" She looks me dead in the face and says "yeah, I did, they taste the same". Bruh. WHAT. Even if you are an educated beer drinker who doesn't like Miller or bud or coors or whatever, I can't even understand the thought process. SHE MIXED 2 BEERS AND SERVED ME IT. I went for a weekday happy hour as it is right near my office. Since it was early around 4/5 it wasn't too crowded yet so it was easy to get a seat. I just had a beer and the pierogies appetizer, which was very good, although I had to ask for the sour cream as it didn't come out with it. The beer selection is decent and they also have a full bar. The service was good. My only complaint is that it was a bit cold inside as they left the back door open and a cool breeze was coming through. read more

Essentially a better version of what it replaced, Peters Pub. We only go there for happy hour after work but everytime has been pretty good. Food, beer/ cocktail selection and service are all pretty medium in the realm of pubs but the price point is something to look forward to. Points for atmosphere. The bouncers here are so disrespectful and sloppy. I was just waiting in line with my friends and a bouncer was aggressively throwing this man out of the bar. He shoved the man down the sidewalk and into me, knocking me off my balance. Instead of making sure I was okay, he continued to yell at the man and then walked away. Well, after seeing the Mario's in Shadyside get worse food and service over the last few years, I had high hopes that they may have learned from their mistakes with their new location. Nope! Went there. We're told to take a seat and someone would be right over to give us menus. Ten minutes later (and having been seen by several servers), nobody came over. We left. Review is based on the beers and the wings. Outstanding ! $5.00 pitchers of Miller Lite all day. We ordered the wings, $12 for a dozen super sized wings. I recently (9/27/19) was in Pittsburgh visiting University of Pittsburgh. We stopped to eat lunch at Mario's and found it to be excellent!! The seating by the open air window allowed us to enjoy the beautiful warm fall weather that day. Our waitress Mia was extremely nice and friendly and very tenantative to our needs. She was also very informative and made a few menu suggestions which turned out to be amazing. The Bloody Marys, the spinach artichoke dip, and the zucchini planks were all to die for. My son had a burger that was so large he couldn't even finish it. We will definitely return on our next trip out and I would highly recommend it. read more
