Reminds me of this polish club in Worcester Mass. Long bar, old school lights over small booths. It has another room on the other side of the bar but only a small opening to serve booze. It's a dive but not a dingy hole. The bartender was like a women on a mission. Maybe had a couple extra cups of coffee, she was a freakin' machine! No time to talk only time to serve and clean. Absolute dive bar in the best way. The only thing keeping it from being a prototypical dive bar is that...it's pretty cavernous with more multiple big (long areas). Luckily you won't be elbow-to-elbow begging for bartenders to pour you a drink. The vibe is chill, the place isn't standing-room-only. Drinks are cheap, karaoke is good, gab is gallous. read more

The service at Dees Cafe is one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life. If there was a zero stars button that's how I would rate my experience. My friend and I stopped by to get some drinks. We wanted to start off with a water before we got more alc in our system. She said "if you aren't going to actually get a drink then you can leave, the sign says no loitering" very aggressively. For one I have never met a bartender so disrespectful in life, or that ever had a problem serving people water. You know doing her job.... was going to get a few drinks but her horrible service turned my money away. I think that older bartender needs to retire because she clearly doesn't want to do her job anymore. read more

It's a dive with super cheap drinks. Why spend more elsewhere when you can get your night started on the cheap? Very laid back atmosphere, too. They were offering $4.50 shooters, so we had a couple loopy vodkas with red bull, a delicious shooter with sentimental value. Smoking is permitted and mostly a very old crowd, neither of which we were looking for, so it was one and done for us, but at those prices and plenty of comfortable seats at the bar, who could complain? read more

It seems that everyone I know in Pittsburgh has had their Dee's phase. You have to love a place that has mixed drinks that are stiff and cheap. For 10 bucks you can get pretty messed up. The crowd is an ideal mix of open-minded hipsters, punks, outcasts and nerds. It can feel a bit cliquey because everyone knows everyone, but people are actually really friendly. You can pretty much start a conversation with any random stranger. It's one of the few places on the south side where you can get away from the college meathead crowd. The ping pong table upstairs is great and so is the jukebox. Sometimes I try to mess with people by playing something like Bell Biv DeVoe. But nobody ever minds. That's what I love most about Dee's - the complete lack of pretension. read more

an oasis in the fratastic stretch known as carson street. while there are other legit (and respectable) bars on the southside, dee's has always been my favorite. the drinks are cheap and the interior dingy but comfortable. i hang out here and pretend to miss my friends calls to meet them at town tavern. i can easily say this is the one bar i miss since moving to new york. read more

A great dive bar in Pittsburgh. Beers are dirt cheap, especially when you go for the pitchers but be sure to check on the drink specials. Bartenders have always been attentive, friendly and quick with a refill. Dee's often has an older (though it may not be more mature) crowd. And this place can get crowded, especially on the weekends. If you're luck enough to score a table, don't go anywhere. If you can't find a seat, be sure to wander to the other side of the bar where there might be more room to move around. I remember dart boards and pool tables, too. There's also an upstairs that people often forget about. As a non-smoker, I'm not thrilled that you can still smoke here. It is also a cash only establishment. On the plus side, though, they have an amazing jukebox. Dee's has never let me down. And with it's down to earth atmosphere, it is a great place to show out-of-towners some local flavor. read more

A favorite place for me and my crew. We're fans of getting drunk and playing games, so the selection between darts, pool and ping-pong (available at the upstairs bar, which I believe is open 9-2 thurs to sat) is definitely a plus. Yuengling bombers, a pretty sweet juke box and smoking inside. These things are all good. Definitely a divey sort of bar, but that's my style and I love it. Always a good array of people to watch when you arrive. Lots of characters for sure. And that's one of the things that makes Dee's so great! Cheapest drinks on E Carson doesn't hurt either. It was a 3.5-star experience for me, but I can see how this place is loved by many. All the reviews I read about Dee's are true: the cheap drinks ($1.25 for a pint of PBR on tap), the laidbackness, and the eclectic crowd (locals, hipsters, nerds, etc). It definitely stood out compared to the plethora of bars we saw on Carson St. Because perhaps we started our Saturday night there, it was hardly packed. The customer service here was pretty awful. We waited on a pool table and had a couple of guys that shared the table with us that were super nice. We were halfway through our last game and someone came up to our table and said "come on, Finish up your game guys we're closing up." This was about 15 minutes before they closed. At about 5 til close they asked up again and I admittedly got a little short because I just wanted finish my game and leave. They were very rude about us finishing our game said "the upstairs closes at two so hurry up." I brought up that we were still customers and they pretty much didn't care. I understand trying to close down, but My companion and I have both been bartenders and this was rudest customer service I've ever had in my entire life. This place is just a typical dive bar if you are looking for a place to sit down and chill that doesn't get too crowded. There are pool tables here which is cool if your into that. I usually just get beer when I'm here. You can smoke in the bar which gets annoying for people who don't smoke. Other than that it's a decent spot if you just want to chill. read more

Well, this place is really something. Beers are cheap, staff is rough. Not the most welcoming place in Pittsburgh. Things like laughing and polite conversation are generally frowned upon. This bar used to be really popular with the tatted up, pierced set. Good times. The crowd was mainly regulars, the drinks were cheap. This was my home away from home for a while. Then the bartenders started to ban people left and right. Then people got barred for stating out loud that they were going to the bar next door to hang out with their barred friends. Or for stating that they were going to catch a band next door. Or for, you know, breathing wrong. It got so bad Slacker started selling Barred from Dee's tee shirts, but the owner of Dee's put a stop to that. The guy clearly has no sense of humor. Or any sense as to how to run a successful business. I haven't been back in years and don't plan to. Yeah it's got a cool layout and the younger bartender who worked upstairs was an absolute peach, but in general this place left me with a sour taste in my mouth and a fear of being barred for no reason. The Smiling Moose a few doors down welcomed the mass exodus from this place with open arms and while I no longer drink on the South Side, I will always be grateful that my friends and I, barred from Dee's Cafe or not, still had someplace fun to drink. read more

I use to hang out here quite a bit back in the nineties But now I find the average age is about 22 or 23. Despite the prior reviewers mentioning it being open-minded and whatever, Dees can be very very cliquey and i-just-escaped-from-the-wealthy-suburbs kind of bratty . We used to joke about all the "trust-a-farians" that were here on any given night. An extreme amount of cigarette smoke in the air. Disgusting. The policy of not accepting credit or debit cards is extremely backwards. The bartenders are legendary for banning people for the slightest offense. Cash only. No frills. No fuss. Cheap beer and beer specials during games. Smoking is a must. The bartenders are friendly. They highly recommended the pudding and Jell-O shots. My party was skeptical, but the ladies behind the bar tell no lies. The banana pudding shot nearly brought me to tears. Far from pretentious. Clean but smoky. dee's is a nice little gem that I've recently been introduced to. it's a typical dive. a big back room with three pool tables and a cut out in the wall so you can order drinks without having to go back to the front room. it gets really packed on weekends but full of familiar faces. you can smoke in here so it gets smokey by the end of the night but good for us people who can't control our cigarette consumption when intoxicated. also a glass of pbr is only $1.25 and a mixed (very strongly mind you) drink with well liqour is only $3!!! downside: the service sucks. they're really rude. I understand someone who's worked there for years develops an attitude of "don't give a damn" but it was a little startling. it's your job, get over it. but since a bar's prices, atmosphere, & crowd are more important because my interaction with the service is so minimal, it's all worth it. read more

A regular hangout during my graduate school years, Dee's was always a mixture of folk, from the college crowd to punk rockers, metal heads to the local pubbies. Often a place we were seen post dinner, pre-Bar 11 (which isn't in the Yelp listings, but worth finding if it's still there) and were many billiards were shot, shots taken and songs chosen from a jukebox. One of my favorite bars in Pittsburgh. I have gone there pretty steadily for the past 8 years. You can always count on a good drink at a good price compared to other bars on the South Side. It is a bit of a dive but that gives it great character. And, I love Dee's juke box. I could probably put $20 in there and listen to good music all night long. There's usually a good mix of people there. I can enjoy a whole night at Dee's if I can score a booth. And I always see people I know there. read more

Since my honest review was mysteriously "DISAPPEARED", I am going to post it once again and will continue to do so until it sticks. Yelp has a habit (news articles and lawsuits abound) about yelps "pay to play" policy when it comes to good and bad reviews..... In the past, it used to be "service with a smile" and "the customer is always right". The elder owners and bartenders should know this, but alas.. they do not. This establishment used to have a large following but in recent years it is suffering a severe drop off in attendance and it's getting worse. What could be the cause? It is a dive, yes... as many pool halls/bars are but it's much deeper than that. First and foremost, the service down stairs is abysmal. The bartenders only know how to take one order for one drink at a time and this makes the service slower than molasses in January. Then they give you attitude if you do not tip them for their slow service. Add to this that Nikki and Judy will ban anyone at the drop of a hat, and make up a reason for it (lie). That's NOT "service with a smile" but it is service with an attitude which is why many of their regulars have left. Who needs service like that? If you complain, you get barred too. Really? Who needs that type of bar? It looks like not many do. Go in any day (pick one) at 9PM and a graveyard has more bodies attendance. Slow and bad attitudes. There are other reasons but these are the most glaring and obvious..... Now compound those with a cash only bar, then that makes the service even slower.. think GLACIER class slow. If you feel the nagging need to attend this dive, you will get much better service upstairs with Mary. (She is short and nice and quick on the draw with the beverages). If you get someone else other than her, chances are you'll get an attitude and threat of being barred eventually so beware. read more
